S2 E41 Forgive Me, Father Bill Father Bill Labbe, a longtime friend of host Bob Cutler, joins this heartfelt and hilarious episode of Cocktails with Friends. Their friendship began in 2012 with a disagreement over student-athlete schedules and Sunday Mass, and has since grown into a bond grounded in mutual respect, candid conversation, and plenty of good-natured ribbing. Father Bill reflects on his calling to the priesthood, his journey through seminary, and the unique spiritual and emotional support he provides to others. Key Topics True Confessions: The Real Purpose of Confession Confession isn't a ritual for quick forgiveness — it's a space for people to speak what's been weighing on them. Father Bill describes how saying something aloud removes its power, allowing people to heal. His approach is pastoral, not transactional, encouraging both grace and growth. Friendship Across Differences Bob and Father Bill show how two people — a priest and a Jewish bartender — can develop a genuine friendship built on humor, honesty, and deep respect. Their playful jabs and serious conversations demonstrate the power of connection beyond labels or beliefs. Faith, Mental Health & Emotional Honesty Father Bill emphasizes that faith isn't a replacement for therapy, and he often refers people to professional counselors. His goal is to support holistic well-being — emotionally, spiritually, and mentally — by recognizing his role as one part of a larger care system. Episode Index [5:50] Father Bill didn't always want to be a priest — he used to skip church, hit Krispy Kreme, and grab a bulletin to fool his mom. [11:35] Confession isn't a shortcut to forgiveness — it's about release, healing, and shedding the shame that keeps people stuck. [17:40] “The puck's in the net.” A former UMaine goalie gave Father Bill a metaphor he uses often in confession: don't dwell on the past — prepare for what's next. [21:05] A bizarre moment in the confessional involved a woman claiming affairs with royalty and the Kennedys — and Father Bill thought he might get shot. [43:40] The episode wraps with Father Bill and Bob reaffirming their friendship — and joking about missing invitations, Jewish guilt, and their shared love of sarcasm.

Father Bill also reflects on the legacy of Pope Francis, particularly his efforts to diversify the College of Cardinals by increasing representation from Asia and the Pacific. Emphasizing that this is a process guided by the Holy Spirit—not politics—he offers insight into how the Church seeks divine direction in choosing a new Holy Father. William Schaberg is the author of an important new book that's “a must read” for every 12-Step member ready to separate recovery myth from recovery miracle. This episode focuses on chapter one of Schaberg's sure to be classic Writing the Big Book titled Challenging the Creation Myths. He and Father Bill explore what Wilson referred to as “the flying blind” period before the Big Book was written. It's just one of the many myths Schaberg carefully examines as he traces the Big Book's writing through the critical eye of historical documentation. Myths are not unrealities – they're expressing truths that are often bigger than reality. This past Sunday, Pastor Bill shared on prayer and praying to God as our Father like Jesus taught His disciples in Matthew 6:7. "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be they name..." Bill shared how prayer is an invitation to an intimate relationship with God and when we pray to our Father we're simply coming to God as His beloved children. He encouraged us that as His children, we should depend on God for everything and find our security and confidence in His love for us. He taught that in areas where we have anxiety, God wants to take us deeper into understanding of God as a loving Father. Draw near to our loving Father who desires a relationship with us. Brett likens the situation to professional wrestling (WWE), where opponents appear fierce but may share a more cordial relationship off-stage. and They also reflect on past moments of levity in politics, such as Reagan's famous debate line in 1984, and discuss the current lack of such moments in today's political climate. The two suggest reforms for political debates, proposing topic-focused debates with experts rather than media personalities. Tune in here to this Tuesday edition of the Brett Winterble Show! We're joined by Father Bill Nicholas from the Diocese of Evansville, Indiana, to talk about yesterday's eclipse and the spirituality of the event. Many news pundits and various other people on social media push that the eclipse was a highly spiritual event. Father Nicholas asserts that this spiritualization of such an event is clear evidence of the spiritual starvation taking place in our country. The natural beauty is a product of God's creation but the event isn't the spirituality, God's fingerprints on the world is what makes natural beauty feel spiritual to mankind. We shouldn't be mystified by these natural phenomena's, we should be in awe of the power of God and his ability to create such breathtaking events. Brett and Father Nicholas also discuss a Bishop in the Diocese of Charlotte who is stepping down. Tune in here to hear Father Bill Nicholas' comments on the state of American society on The Brett WInterble Show! We're joined by Father Bill Nicholas, the Diocese of Evansville, to talk about a child who was taken from their parents because the parents would not refer to the child by their preferred pronouns and how this is a direct attack of the freedom of religion. The government is supposed to protect citizens rights and children. This concept has been completely inverted to the point that children are being removed from their homes because of their parents adherence to their religious beliefs. Father Bill points to the Obama administration that began referring to freedom of religion as "freedom to worship." It started with religion and has quickly turned to attacking the freedom of speech which can be seen across the country today.
