Michael Lofton covers the most recent step the Vatican has taken to stop the German Synodal Way and then addresses the scandal that recently took place at St. Patrick’s cathedral in New York.
Poor health has kept Pope Francis from a trip to Dubai this weekend where he was to participate in the United Nations COP28 climate conference. Nevertheless, the pope has still kept a rather busy schedule. This week we talk about the pope's health and other news from the Vatican such as the potential that Cardinal Raymond Burke will be stripped of his Vatican apartment and stipend. Register's Jonathan Leidl joins us from Rome.
Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Luke 9:57-62 - As Jesus and His disciples were proceeding on their journey, someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest His Head." And to another He said, "Follow Me." But he replied, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father." But He answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God." And another said, "I will follow You, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home." Jesus answered him, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God." Memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi Saint Francis, pray for us! Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2) Interview with Dr. Peter Howard, who is promoting the Bishop Sheen event at Sacred Heart Chapel, 381 West Center Street, Covina, CA chapel on Saturday, 14 October 2023 3) Pope Francis allowing same-sex "blessings" shows he wants the German Synodal Way for the whole Church. While many still defend Pope Francis, it has become clear that he is on the same path as the modernist, pro-LGBT German bishops https://lifesitenews.com/blogs/pope-francis-allowing-same-sex-blessings-shows-he-wants-the-german-synodal-way-for-the-whole-church/?utm_source=most_recent&utm_campaign=usa 4) Update with Church Militant on news as it relates to the Church & Culture

The German “Synodal Way” is a poison that is ready to spread to the entire Catholic Church and Western world, bringing with it destructive ideologies including: new schism led by heretical German bishops, women ordination, Pro-LGBT homosexual teachings, new government lockdowns, and an eradication of the Latin Mass. The German Synod of Bishops will stop at nothing to fully implement the globalist wing of the New World Order — a religion free of true Christianity. However, LifeSite European Correspondent Andreas Wailzer joins John-Henry Westen to report that there is still hope in Germany thanks to a remnant of traditional Catholics who are fighting the ground-battle on behalf of us all. This can't-miss report signals the crossroads for the future of the Catholic Church.FAITH-BASED FINANCIAL INVESTING IS HERE! A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - A Catholic church in Tangamandapio and seven other Catholic churches were damaged in the state of Michoacán by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico on Monday, September 19. The earthquake's epicenter was 49 miles from the town of Coalcomán in the state of Michoacán. So far, two people have reportedly died. The earthquake, which was felt in other parts of the country such as Mexico City, occurred on the anniversary of two other major earthquakes in 1985 and 2017, which claimed many lives. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252354/eight-churches-damaged-by-sept-19-earthquake-in-mexico The vice president of the German bishops' conference said Thursday he had thought about resigning after the publication of a report claiming he mishandled abuse cases, but that he had ultimately decided against it. A report published Sept. 20 said Bishop Franz-Josef Bode mishandled abuse cases in the Diocese of Osnabrück, in northwestern Germany, which he has led since 1995. The 71-year-old bishop has been vice president of the German bishops' conference since 2017. He is also vice president of the German Synodal Way. He has publically supported women deacons and the development of a Church ceremony for blessing same-sex unions. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252357/german-bishop-says-he-will-not-resign-after-report-he-mishandled-abuse-cases After the pro-life pregnancy center he runs outside Buffalo was firebombed and vandalized on June 7, James Harden gave investigators video-surveillance footage of the attack, along with what he described as a “mountain of other evidence.” Harden said that he has asked both the FBI and local police for access to the footage so he can make a copy of it, to no avail. The police showed him still images taken from the video, he said, but would not give him access to the footage itself. So on Tuesday CompassCare filed a lawsuit asking a judge to order the police department to provide CompassCare with a copy of the footage. The legal action is the latest manifestation of mounting frustration about what some see as a lackluster response by the FBI and other law-enforcement agencies to the wave of violent attacks on pro-life groups and Catholic churches across the US since an early draft of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v Wade was leaked on May 2. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252352/pregnancy-clinic-firebombed-janes-revenge-no-arrests Today, the Church celebrates Saint Maurice, a member of the Theban Legion, a Roman legion said to have been constituted by Christian soldiers from Africa, which was called to put down a revolt in Aaunum, located in modern day Switzerland, in the year 287. Two legends exist about the martyrdom of Saint Maurice and his companions. According to the legends, the legion's soldiers were either ordered to take part in pagan sacrifices, or ordered to harass and kill some local Christians. In either event, the 6,600 men of Maurice's legion refused. In punishment for their disobedience, every tenth man in the legion was killed. When the remaining soldiers, fortified by Saint Maurice, still refused other legions were called in to force them to follow their orders. Persisting in their refusal, they were all massacred. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-maurice-and-companions-602 The Church also celebrates Saint Thomas of Villanova, a 16th century Spanish Augustinian monk and archbishop who lived a life of austerity in order to provide for the spiritual and material needs of his people. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-thomas-of-villanova-710
Our stories today include: (1) Pope Francis' trip to Kazakhstan (Sept. 14-15) and his participation in a World Religions Congress, during which he championed religious freedom while ignoring Christ and Catholicism; (2) the accession of Charles III to the British throne and the question of whether or not he is truly a Christian king; (3) some disturbing (albeit predictable) developments from the German Synodal Way, including a so-called "magisterial reassessment of homosexuality"; and (4) a petition submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court asking the Court to recognize the personhood (i.e., inherent dignity and inalienable rights) of unborn children.

On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: Mourners in Scotland are paying their final respects to Queen Elizabeth II. International Affiliate Correspondent for the Associated Press, Philip Crowther, joins to share what the mood in Scotland is right now. And there was a big gathering on the White House South Lawn this afternoon as President Joe Biden celebrated the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. While Democrats want to spend more money on COVID testing and research, they say their main priority right now is to get the same sex marriage bill passed. Democrat Tammy Baldwin and Republican Susan Collins, a Catholic, are drafting an amendment aimed at satisfying conservative concerns that the same sex marriage bill risks infringing on religious freedom. Meanwhile, the German Synodal Way recently concluded its 3 day assembly. The gathering voted to support changes to Church teaching on issues including homosexuality and the ordination of women. Editor in Chief for CNA Deutsch, AC Wimmer, joins to tell us more about the two votes. Finally this evening, last week, the Supreme Court blocked an attempt to force Yeshiva University to recognize a same sex pride organization. Managing Director of the Coalition for Jewish Values, Rabbi Yaakov Menken, joins to tell us about the court battles, why the judge in New York ruled in favor of the pride alliance and what the Supreme Court said in siding with the university. Our stories this week include: (1) Pope Francis' current trip to Canada, the focus of which has been on apologizing for the injustices suffered by Canada's indigenous peoples (in particular, abuses suffered by children in Canada's Residential Schools system); (2) new restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass in two U.S. dioceses, as well as the alleged shutdown of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago by Cardinal Blase Cupich (reportedly effective Aug. 1); (3) a mixed message from the Vatican regarding the German Synodal Way, plus a concerning synod report from Luxembourg; and (4) Vice President Kamala Harris' concern that "women are getting pregnant every day in America and this is a real issue," since the authority to regulate or outlaw abortion has been returned to individual States via the Dobbs decision.
Our stories today include: (1) a new crop of cardinals named by the Pope, as well as some problematic prelates appointed by Francis to the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome; (2) President Joe Biden's proclamation for "Pride Month" and the flying of a rainbow flag at the U.S. embassy to the Holy See; (3) recent remarks from Cardinal Raymond Burke on the German Synodal Way; and (4) the implementation of Traditionis Custodes in the Diocese of St. Augustine, Florida by Bishop Felipe Estévez.
If you had a chance to ask Pope Francis one question, what would it be? That was not a hypothetical question for this week's guests. Emily Burke and Henry Glynn are two of the students who were selected to take part in “Building Bridges North-South: A Synodal Encounter Between Pope Francis and University Students,” hosted by Loyola University Chicago. The conversation centered on migration, and Emily and Henry used their time with Francis to talk about climate change refugees. We ask these young climate activists what it was likely to speak with the pope, how they hope to get more members of the U.S. church, including priests and bishops, to make the climate a priority and how they stay hopeful in their fight for the planet. Recently a very prominent Cardinal, very close to Pope Francis, flat out said he didn't believe the Catholic teaching on homosexuality and that the Catechism should be revised. And at about the same time, the Synodal Assembly of the German Church voted overwhelmingly to advocate for blessing same sex unions. And then Pope Francis at his weekly General Audience seemed to imply that everyone is saved. What's going on? What should we do? Take Inside the Vatican's Listener Survey! On May 21, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, the archbishop of Munich and Freising and a top advisor to Pope Francis, submitted his resignation to the pope, saying he wanted to take “institutional responsibility” for the sexual abuse crisis. “It is important to me to share the responsibility for the catastrophe of the sexual abuse by Church officials over the past decades,” the cardinal wrote in a letter to the pope. Cardinal Marx has never been accused of sexual abuse or cover-up but expressed that he wanted to take responsibility for helping to mold church structures that failed to prevent sexual abuse. In a decision that came as a surprise to Cardinal Marx, Pope Francis refused to accept the resignation, using the opportunity to tell the world's bishops to take action on abuse. The offer of resignation sent shockwaves through Germany and the Vatican. This week on “Inside the Vatican,” host Colleen Dulle and veteran Vatican correspondent Gerard O'Connell discuss the aftereffects of Cardinal Marx's offer to resign. Tune in next week for a special deep dive episode on the German Synodal Way. Links from the show: Take Inside the Vatican's Listener Survey!
