In this episode of The Cheer Mom Podcast, we're learning more about what to look for when comparing teams in your athlete's division with the help of today's guest, Gina Harris. Gina Harris is a cheer coach and a cheer mom, and the story of what led her to become a cheerleader and eventually a cheer coach, is one of the most impactful stories I've heard in cheerleading. Gina is a six-time State Championship Coach and Choreographer, and the founder of Cheer Coach Academy, an online cheerleading resource for cheer coaches. She has been involved in cheerleading in many roles for over three decades, and today she is sharing her wisdom about relationships with your child's coaches (especially when things go "awry," and what to look for when trying to assess where your team will land in the standings. Of course, we all think our athlete is the best, and we can be biased when watching their team. But just because a routine is executed perfectly, doesn't always mean a first-place finish. Gina is helping us break it down. Special thanks to our podcast sponsor: Prodigy Cheer Apparel

In the previous episode, I spoke with a musical writing team about their process of writing a full show for the stage with a cast and creative team bringing their story to life. But in today's episode I'm speaking with a singular artist about her one-woman show and the long journey it took to go from thoughts and ideas in her head to an actual production and a dramatic podcast as well. Gina Harris has performed in theaters and jazz clubs in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. She's a veteran of the famous improv group The Groundlings and had a leading role in the Broadway and national touring productions of Beethoven's Tenth. A show that you've probably never heard of, and Gina will share with us why that is. But she also talks about dealing with the loss of her parents and mentor, what led her to write a one-woman musical called The Magic of Ordinary Things, even though she'd never written a song before in her life, and how she went through 10 different directors before finally finding the right person to guide her creative efforts. If you could see them one more time, what would you say? What would you want to hear? Well, Gina Harris got the chance. The Magic of Ordinary Things is a musical memoir — a theatre piece, a dream, a Sufi Tale with original music.  It tells the story of how moments missed and things once taken for granted become the stepping stones to a new life. It reminds us that it's never too late. What I find fascinating about human emotions such as grief, is that every one of us deals with them differently. Some people shut down and deal internally with their feelings, others need the support and shoulders of friends and family. But sometimes it is this deep emotional turmoil, that gives birth to some of the most amazing pieces of art because some people work through their grief by writing, painting or singing about it.It is those songs born out of pure emotions that give me all the feels. Those are the songs that make me cry, give me goosebumps or just allow me to travel down memory lane. It really got me curious about the creative process that goes into writing and performing from a place of grief. And I was lucky enough to meet just the right person to talk to.Gina Harris is a singer/songwriter and actor who has performed in theaters and jazz clubs in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Gina has done just that – she wrote a solo musical called “The Magic of Ordinary Things,” where she addresses her thoughts and emotions of dealing with her own grief after the loss of her parents and her singing teacher Lilian. Her music, grown from her jazz and blues roots, is magical and dreamy. Her lyrics are haunting, nostalgic and deep. I was curious to have a look behind the scenes and find out more about her creative process and how she was able to blend love, grief and hope into music.A big THANK YOU to Reiner Erlings for the music. www.reinererlings.com

This week on the podcast Kristyn Szala joins me back on the podcast to talk about Cuddle Cots – what they are, why a mom who has received a life-limiting diagnosis should know about these, how to learn more about them and how to get one for yourself or for someone you love. Kristyn shared her full story with us in Episode 134 but is joining us this week to talk specifically about Cuddle Cots and the role this resource played in her bereavement care. Kristyn says over and over during our time together what a blessing Cuddle Cots were to her after her son Asher was born still due to complications from a life-limiting diagnosis of Trisomy 18. Cuddle Cots gave her, and give moms like her, the gift of time. This amazing resource gives parents, as well as friends and family, the ability to spend time with their baby that they wouldn't really be able to otherwise. Cuddle cots are not widely known about in the US but they are gaining traction as a very helpful resource in bereavement care for families who have experienced the loss of a baby and Kristyn shares all about that in this episode. If you have been given a life-limiting diagnosis or knows someone who has this episode is going to be very helpful. And if you are a grieving mom, looking for a way to bless other moms I would listen in – knowing about Cuddle Cots and helping to raise awareness about this unique and helpful resource might be the very thing someone you know and love will need in the future. Like I shared last week in Episode 141 with Gina Harris, CEO of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, as we near the end of the year, if you are looking for year end giving opportunities this would be a really, really great opportunity to give to in honor of your baby this Christmas. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is an organization that provides the gift of remembrance portraits to parents experiencing the death of a baby. Gina is passionate about the value of photographs for families like us and I was so grateful for this conversation. I especially loved when she said: “the photographs of our son David, are our most prized and cherished possession. They are everything to us still to this day. 14 years later… these photographs document the existence of our precious babies.”  I can't wait for you to hear more about Gina's story, the role that remembrance photography played in her story as well as Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. Gina shares with us how we can help spread the news about the services they offer, both for moms and for medical professionals, and how you can get connected and learn more about their volunteer opportunities. As a side note they need more than just photographers as volunteers, so don't dismiss those volunteer opportunities until you hear Gina share a little more about ways you can serve. Also, I wanted to mention that as we near the end of the year, if you are looking for year end giving opportunities this would be a really, really great organization to give towards and you could even do so in honor of your baby this Christmas. Who the influencers are…What the potential is to differentiate us from our competition.  Really, it is ‘know the business,’ once you know the business, the IT part is a lot easier.”   She shares that having a Learning Organization is essential to her company’s overall success.   How do you ensure you have a Learning Organization?      Empower your team with information.  Paint the picture of the problem, brainstorm, research and collaborate the solution together.    Soft skills are more important than your tech skills.     Ability to embrace change.    Being open minded     Initiative    Empathy    Self Awareness      Willing to Collaborate    Thick Skinned- Don’t take rejection personally, find out what you could do better.    Team Building     Have each other’s back    Humor     No one says, “this is not my job”    Speak to strengths and weaknesses    Give credit and appreciate people’s skills    Compassion & Empathy translates into Good Work     When you treat people well, give them feedback and look them in the eye on a regular basis, they will rally behind the leadership if they feel supported.   Thank you, Gina, for your transparent and informed advice on how to generate mighty good work as an IT pro and company wide.   Visit Mighty Good Work and The Yes Works at: www.TheYesWorks.com   Found out more great info from Gina in this article: http://food.cioreview.com/cxoinsight/the-business-value-of-it--nid-14037-cid-29.html   Theme music by: Miguel Juarez   Midshow break music by : Allan Loucks www.TinEar.com

Following their victory over Florida, Alabama is enjoying their first bye week. It's been fundamentals for the boys in Crimson at practice this week on top of some time to get over the bumps and bruises of a football season. For BAMS, we don't take bye weeks, and have a great show lined up for this evening. Crimson Tide commitment Blake Barnett and his mother Gina Harris will join the program at 8:20 to discuss their visit to Alabama this past weekend. They will be followed up by John Garcia Jr from Scout.com at 9 to talk about a multitide of Tide topics including recruiting, and what he's seen from the 2014 team. The action starts at 8:00 with Cary Clark, Drew DeArmond and Thomas Watts. Be there, or be Auburn.
