The Greek myth of Sisyphus unveils our valiant and irrepressible desire to create something unique out of our lives despite our despair and our defeats. This deep conversation plunges the depths and fullness of this misunderstood myth. It is a parable for the modern world and our fight against the hell of the pandemic and the rise of authoritarianism in the world today. Award-winning writer, filmmaker, travel guide, and storyteller Phil Cousineau talks about the joys and challenges of homecoming — the oldest tale in the world, repeated from The Odyssey to The Wizard of Oz. Phil's fascination with other cultures has taken him from Michigan to Marrakesh, from Iceland to the Amazon. He's written more than 35 books, including The Hero's Journey, Stoking the Creative Fires, The Art of Pilgrimage, and The Book of Roads. He's also the host of Global Spirit, the first “internal travel series” on PBS. In this podcast, Phil explains why it's so hard for the hero — or the heroine — to get back home again; why Americans feel so rootless; how rituals help us celebrate our travels, and why we need to share our stories and reconnect with loved ones around the hearth. Here are some excerpts with the audio and full transcript below. On Homecoming and Detroit I just came back from the city where I grew up, and there are so many people walking around with sweatshirts for the Detroit Tigers, but also shirts that say DIA for the Detroit Institute of Arts. The people in Detroit who are essentially rebuilding the city are identifying not just with sports, but with culture. Detroit has had the most precipitous decline in population in urban history. And so this is a huge moment. A rebirth, a renaissance. It's very hard to begin to rebuild without this sense of pride. It's an axiom now that if people don't love, not just like or identify with, if they don't love where they live, they will burn the place down. Reading The Odyssey Today This story is about the awakening of a man who has not quite appreciated his wife, Penelope, and who has upset the gods who are wreaking havoc on his effort to get home again. After his time with Circe, Odysseus goes down into the underworld to find Tiresias, the sage, who tells him: You can get home again but you will have to suffer. The gods will make it difficult for you to do this. You will have to curb your desires and the desires of the men in your crew. This is the psychological insight: It's your desires that have kept you from getting home again. What does that mean for us today? The Wizard of Oz In the last scene the Good Witch turns to Dorothy and says, “If you just wake up, you will see that you have always been at home.” The Buddha said this, too, along with other great spiritual teachers. Wake up! In some way, we all go to sleep. And then philosophy, religion, travel, art, wake us up again. When all five senses are alive, you can be home anywhere.

I am honored to introduce today's guest, Phil Cousineau. Phil is an award-winning writer, filmmaker, teacher, editor, travel leader, storyteller and TV host. We will be discussing a range of topics, such as the meaning of forgiveness and atonement, the importance of presence, and our collective longing for wholeness. The following is a taste of my conversation with Phil. Q: Where does forgiveness end? Where does compassion end? Phil: (Quoting Dr. Jacob Needleman): You ask them three times for forgiveness. Now, the first time, they may still be angry at you. The second time, they may not have gotten over you. And then, the third time, they could forgive you or they have become so obtuse and so bitter that they still refuse, well, on, let's say, on the grand scale of things, your karma is free. You have done what you need to do on the spiritual plane. Q: How do you define atonement? Phil: At-one-ment. It’s like many of the classic definitions of beauty, which is all forms of harmony and wholeness. Q: How does atonement relate to forgiveness? Phil: The act of forgiveness is kind of going halfway and then stopping. Doing something to make amends that is psychologically commensurate with the damage that was done, then the healing can begin. Q: How does one get to forgiveness when there’s a complex blend of multiple layers of mutual wrongdoing, with each party blaming the other? Phil: If we do not learn how to forgive in our relationships, in the workplace, and in our political activism, a kind of soul rust sets in. When asked if there’s one last thing he’d like our listeners to hear, Phil says, “People will risk themselves for others, and I once asked Joseph Campbell why this is so? And I can still hear the beautiful cadence in his voice when he gave me the answer on camera, “It's because we know at the end of the day, we are one.” About Phil: Phil Cousineau is a writer, teacher, editor, independent scholar, documentary filmmaker, travel leader and storyteller. His life-long fascination with the art, literature and history of culture has taken him on many journeys around the world. He lectures frequently on a wide range of topics--from mythology, film and writing, to beauty, travel, sports and creativity. He has published more than 35 nonfiction books and has over 20 scriptwriting credits to his name. He is the host and cowriter of the PBS and Link TV series, “Global Spirit.”
Our latest guest on Soundtracking is something of a demigod when it comes to the realms of music and film. Anton Corbijn is a Dutch photographer, music video director and filmmaker who has snapped anyone who's anyone in the music industry, including Bob Dylan, Bjork, Bruce Springsteen and Miles Davies. Indeed, it was he who took those iconic pictures of Joy Division in the subway tunnel, beginning a relationship which ultimately led to him bringing us the Ian Curtis biopic, Control. Anton has also had a long-standing relationship with U2 and Depeche Mode, and it is Depeche Mode's final concert of their Global Spirit tour that is the subject of his latest project - the documentary, Spirits In The Forest, which places a specific focus on six of the band's fans. Depeche Mode: SPIRITS in the Forest is in cinemas for one night only worldwide on 21 November. Find your closest screening at spiritsintheforest.com (https://www.spiritsintheforest.com/)

Episode 32: Concert Report - Depeche Mode "Global Spirit Tour" 2017 Brian and Sarah were preparing to present the second half of the New Order album "Technique" as the next episode, but a little band from Basildon made them change their minds. Instead, our hosts decided to talk about the Depeche Mode concert they just attended in Washington, DC. Brian and Sarah have already done two "emergency episodes" to discuss singles off the latest Mode album, "Spirit," so it seemed only right to also devote an episode to a concert promoting that album. Spoiler Alert! If you don't want to know about the setlist or other aspects of the Global Spirit Tour, this is not the episode for you. The hosts go over each song, from the opening to the encore. Another spoiler alert, which shouldn't be much of a surprise-- Brian and Sarah loved the show! They also loved getting the chance to talk about it and help cement their newly-formed memories. Back for the third time on Creative Spirit, Phil Cousineau is an award-winning writer and filmmaker, teacher and editor, lecturer and travel leader, storyteller and PBS host (Global Spirit). Phil's fascination with the art, literature, and history of culture has taken him on a worldwide search for what the ancients called the “soul of the world.” With more than 30 books and 15 scriptwriting credits to his name, the “omnipresent influence of myth in modern life” is a thread that runs through all of his work. His wide range of references and experiences make Phil the perfect person to conclude our monthlong look at beauty. Listen in, and you'll agree!
Sugar, it seems, is in almost all of our foods. And not just sugar, but sweeteners in general, are added to so many of our processed foods. As an additive it enhances flavor and aroma, and it helps products retain moisture. And in this day and age sugar is relatively inexpensive. But many are surprised to learn that sugar and sweeteners as an everyday food additive are a relatively recent innovation, and prior to the European invasions of the Western Hemisphere, sugar was a very costly luxury item. As Europeans established sugar plantations throughout their Caribbean and Latin America territories, sugar became more readily available for European markets. As the demand and consumption of cane sugar grew in the second half of the Second Millennia CE, the sugar processors were left with the byproduct molasses, and what can be made from molasses? Rum, and it would become the first distilled spirit to be sold around the globe. It would be easy to think that sugar cane was indigenous to the New World, since that is where most of the world’s sugar is grown in the Caribbean islands and Latin America, but it isn’t. It first came from Southeast Asia, and then spread into India, and eventually into the Arab world. In India and China, a fermented sugar wine was made as early as the late first millennia BCE. Marco Polo during his travels through Asia in the 14th Century CE noted of a “very good wine of sugar” which he was served in Persia. Because of the rarity of sugar in Europe, Marco Polo would have been quite surprised by this sugar wine.
¿Where is the Revolution? ¡dando me gusta a este audio!
Phil Cousineau was our first guest on Creative Spirit because he embodies the creative spirit as a true Renaissance man. An award-winning writer and filmmaker, teacher and editor, lecturer and travel leader, storyteller and PBS-TV host (Global Spirit), Phil's fascination with the art, literature, and history of culture has taken him on a worldwide search for what the ancients called the “soul of the world.” With more than 30 books and 15 scriptwriting credits to his name, the “omnipresent influence of myth in modern life” is a thread that runs through all of his work. Find out how Phil's mentor Joseph Campbell stoked this passion, and much more, in this fascinating interview!
