What comes to mind when you think about joy? And can there be joy in protest and refusal? Someone who's been asking and trying to answer questions about this is Akwugo Emejulu. She's been investigating the relationship between Black feminist joy, ambivalence and futures, asking how Black feminists are remixing political media, meanings and messages to co-create manifestos for change. Akwugo has also been mapping the grassroots organising and activism of women of colour for more than 15 years, and in this episode shares her insights about the role of joy and other emotions in understanding society and social change. Experiential Wholebody Therapy with Glenn Fleisch, PhD. The Living Process S02E10 with Greg Madison, PhD. Dr. Glenn Fleisch has been a psychotherapist in private practice in California for over 35 years. Glenn trained with some of the leading figures in American existential and Buddhist psychology, including David Michael Levin, Rollo May, and John Wellwood. He also trained with some of the most experienced teachers in the Focusing world including Ann Weiser Cornell, Kevin McEvenue, Janet Klein and Gendlin himself. Glenn studied and teaches at the California Institute of Integral Studies and remains active as an adjunct professor and supervisor in psychotherapy as well as a Wholebody Focusing trainer. In this episode, Glenn and I review how he encountered Focusing in his early 20s as part of his therapy training and then went on to learn Focusing in order to explore his own personal growth. He completed his training with Ann Weiser Cornell in Berkeley before studying and working with Kevin McEvenue for many years. He also learned Interactive Focusing with Janet Klein. Glenn talks about how his own practice and understanding of Focusing began to diverge from Gendlin's original descriptions. He goes into some detail in exploring his version of wholebody Focusing and how he offers it in a creative and expressive style with his clients. Glenn also shares many examples from his client work to show his attention to all bodily phenomena, his creative work with trauma, and his development of animistic psychology. I was glad to hear that we can look forward to a book outlining Glenn's work soon. Glenn offers online WBF seminars/classes for personal growth and professional development and trains other therapists to learn this method of therapy. I used to wonder at the decay of popular music in all of its forms. Why wasn’t anyone writing beautiful music? It seemed almost as though they had lost the ability. And then I read what Robert Bork wrote about the music in question in Slouching Towards Gomorrah: The obscenity of thought and word is staggering, but also notable is the deliberate rejection of any attempt to achieve artistic distinction or even mediocrity. And suddenly, it all became clear to me.It is not merely that they can no longer write music as such. It is even that they will not. The problem is that they have come to hate beauty, to despise art. There is a spirit of pure hatred in what is called art and music today. For decades now, artists and musicians have tried to shock the bourgeoisie with trash only to find the bourgeoisie adapting its taste to trash and becoming, now, nearly un-shockable. The objective is not to advance art. It is to trash art, to make art ridiculous.Rollo May said that when men lose the power to love, they often substitute what he called power over or dominance. And there can be no doubt that many have lost the power to love. And everything that was beautiful, we have come to hate. It doesn’t take a very vivid imagination to grasp what is going on when an artist wants to urinate on Christ, to throw dung at the mother of Jesus. There is a hatred there of staggering dimensions. And it is a hatred that is very old. A hatred that probably predates man’s presence on the earth. Whence cometh this chaotic, destructive, hateful, violent, excrement-obsessed spirit? More important, where is it going?

In 1953, May published Man's Search for Himself, in which he explores these problems – that are perhaps more relevant than ever in our modern age. When society can no longer give us a clear picture of our values and standards, of what we are and what we ought to be, we are then thrown back on the search for ourselves. This is one of the few blessings of living in an age of anxiety. To venture causes anxiety, but not to venture is to lose oneself. To venture in the highest sense is precisely to become conscious of oneself. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/eternalised/message

Başka her şey benim havsalamda şeklini, kokusunu, karakterini, anlamını, tarifini buluyor. Başkalarının söylediklerinden de aslında kendi istediklerimi alıyorum. Eğer ben kendine bakma cesaretine sahip biriysem; başkalarının sözleri kişiliğime bir sağlama yapma imkanı veriyor. Yok öyle değilsem; başkalarının söylediklerinden kendi yalanımı besleyecek şeyler devşirip kendim gerçeğimden her an daha fazla uzaklaşıyorum. Bertrand Russell, 'Mutlu Olma Sanatı'nda alacakaranlıklarımızı aydınlatabilecek bir pencere açıyor: “Ruhen yüceltme yeteneği bulunan evrenin her köşesinden esecek rüzgarlara zihninin pencerelerini açık tutar.

Since the podcast is about connection it was fitting for us to explore topics related to psychotherapy as the content that served as the context for learning about and with each other. We start the discussion with me sharing my here and now experience of feeling nervous to speak with him, which is very unusual. I decide to share this straight away and Victor compassionately invites me to explore my experience together. 2:00 Victor shares the common expectation that a therapist will take away or reduce the experience they are having. Instead he points out that we can be with our experience and learn from it. 3:00 Tim express gratitude for Victor's work in making Virginia Satir's work available on video and subsequent work with other master therapists. 8:10 Victor reflects that he notices so much in what he's hearing and noticing with what Tim's shared that in therapeutic context would be available. He feels that psychotherapy can be a creative artful process.10:30 Tim poses the question of what aspects of therapeutic skills are relevant for day to day intimate and connective conversations to Victor. 12:27 Victor reflects that he often asks clients to reflect on what's happening for them at the head level and heart level. He suggests slowing down and tuning into ourselves and the other person. Attending to the words , and facial expressions of the other person as well as one's own body and feelings. 18:40 We talk about what ‘here and now' means in context of group and individual therapy. Victor shares that he is feeling engaged, and in flow and aware of some vulnerability and a desire to share something of use to the audience. 21:45 Tim asks about Victor's connection to James Bugental who was a Humanistic existential psychologist. Victor shares about his meeting and experiences of training with James. . 27:30 Victor reflects on his learnings with James Bugental. He demonstrates and differentiates some of the ideas and techniques from James Bugental's work such as searching that make it different from normal day to day conversations.32:20 One of the most powerful words he would say was , “And...” rather than letting the conversation be a ping pong match. It reinforces and introduces the idea that there's always more. This is one of things James used to say, “There's always more.” Each person is an arena of endless exploration.34:00 Victor experiential explores his emotions that come up upon his reflects on his relationships with James Bugental. 37:50 Tim shares a quote from James Bugental “ But early on l wanted to change her implicit sense of her task from telling me about herself to expressing herself. That's such an important difference. Then she makes herself an object of description. We're not dealing with a living person. lnformation about her. .. l don't like to get a lot of information about a client in advance. l want to know are they're reasonably able to maintain, and reality testing is all right, that sort of thing. But too much information will just cloud the screen for me. l need to be as innocent, in a certain way, as l can be for each person. l need to be as innocent, in a certain way, as l can be for each person. To discover this unique person. And that sounds very nice and humanistic, and it is. But the real value is, that way l get to know the livingperson, not about a person who has that name.”39:00 Victor reflects on the therapist role in helping the client to not objectify themselves but to enter more deeply in their experience and to be present (“search process”) 42:00 James Bugental also talked about ‘resistance' which is resistance to life. These are coping patterns created for survival, defense mechanisms. They work for us but also limit us. Examples, intellectualizing, or mocking oneself, or hiding emotions. Helping clients become more flexible with their coping patterns.47:00 “inclusion not amputation” another James Bugental quote . He also talked about the co-occuring counter balancing energies of support and encouragement or the ‘backstop' that urges them forward. 50: 30 Tim reads a quote by Rollo May and asks for Victors reflections. “....and the problem is that psychotherapy becomes more and more a system of gimmicks. People have special ways of doing their own therapy. They learn which particular buttons to push. They're taught various techniques by which they can, so that they can at least cure this isolated symptom or that. And that wasn't the purpose at all, of Freud and Jung and the rest of the really great men who began our field. Their purpose was to make the unconscious conscious. And that's a great--there's a great deal of difference between them. This was what Freud was setting out to do. It's what Jung is trying to do. It's what Adler and Rank did. These people never talked about these gimmicks. It just didn't interest them. What did interest them was making a new person. You see, the new possibilities come up. Then you have--then you change the person. Otherwise, you change only the way he behaves, only the way he approaches this or that incidental problem. The problem's going to change in six months when he'll be back again for some more so-called therapy.” -Rollo May52:00 Victor reflects on some of the context surrounding more technique based therapies and the importance of therapist reflecting on their use of self, to sit with difficult emotions, not necessarily always needing to ‘do' something to the client. The ability to sit with clients and to be with their emotions. 58:32 Victor shares about his orientation and perspective towards psychotherapy.1:03:30 We explore the words. “Self-Connection”

Soul Studies is a new series of podcasts where I read excerpts from books that are currently inspiring me. In this episode I read from the first chapter of Rollo May's 1975 book “The Courage to Create”. It struck me as a book that feels incredibly relevant to our cultural moment, particularly on the topics of despair, cultural divides and ideological fanaticism. “People who claim to be absolutely convinced that their stand is the only right one are dangerous. Such conviction is the essence not only of dogmatism, but of its more destructive cousin, fanaticism. It blocks off the user from learning new truth, and it is a dead giveaway of unconscious doubt. The person then has to double his or her protests in order to quiet not only the opposition but his or her own unconscious doubts as well.”Rollo May (1909-1994) taught at Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, and was Regents' Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. An influential psychologist, he was the best-selling author of Love and Will, as well as the author of The Courage to Create, Man's Search for Himself, The Meaning of Anxiety, and Psychology and the Human Dilemma. If you enjoyed this episode and want me to continue sharing work I find in the course of my Soul Studies, please let me know! Welcome to Fall Season!Fall can be an incredible time of celebration, but also a time of deep reflection as we look back on the year and see what we have accomplished, lost, gained, and what we still dream of moving towards. Maybe you are feeling a little more contemplative this time of year, this podcast episode is a great one to come to to get grounded and hear your inner voice. Also, to realize you are exactly where you need to be no matter what emotions are coming up. Quote:"The Courage To Create"by Rollo May"...courage will not be the opposite of despair. We shall often be faced with despair, as indeed every sensitive person has been during the last several decades in this country...courage is not the absence of despair; it is, rather, the capacity to move ahead in spite of despair.""The word courage comes from the same stem as the French word coeur, meaning "heart". Thus just as one's heart, by pumping blood to one's arms, legs, and brain enables all the other physical organs to function, so courage makes possible all psychological virtues. Without courage other values wither away into mere facsimiles of virtue."

In Rollo May's 1972 book, "Power and Innocence: A Search for the Sources of Violence," May wrote a chapter called "Ecstasy and Violence" where he explains man's attraction to the ecstasy or excitement surrounding violence and how this snaps us out of our mundane and "over-sterilized" modern environments. At the end of this chapter, he shares the story of a WWII combat veteran who returns to Europe to speak with some of his former comrades about their lives during the war--and how things changed in a negative way after the war. Yes, negative way "after" the war because their ecstasy of life had vaporized due to the lack of risk and challenge in comparison to the war. Many have written that real life begins on the edge of death--here are some related thoughts according to Rollo May and how we can position that our recent removal of reasonable risks and challenges the last few decades have set up a generation of American youth to become "more violent" in their quest to feel alive. #thelongroad

REFLECTION QUOTES “…these are yuppie words, happiness and unhappiness. It's not happiness or unhappiness, it's either blessed or unblessed. As the Bible says, ‘Blessed is the man who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly.' Now, that must be a happy man. Knowing that you are the person you were put on this earth to be – that's much more important than just being happy.” ~Bob Dylan in a Rolling Stone interview (1991) “Bless you prison, bless you for being in my life. For there, lying upon the rotting prison straw, I came to realize that the object of life is not prosperity as we are made to believe, but the maturity of the human soul.” ~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008), The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956 “[Americans] are a drifting and aimless people—awash in material goods and yet spiritually aching for meaning.” ~U.S. Senator Ben Sasse in his book The Vanishing American Adult “It is an ironic habit of human beings to run faster when they have lost their way.” ~Rollo May (1909-1994), psychologist and author “A decline in courage may be the most striking feature that an outside observer notices in the West today…. Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling and intellectual elites….” ~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's Harvard address 1978 “Worship is the arena in which God recalibrates our hearts, reforms our desires, and rehabituates our loves. Worship isn't just something we do; it is where God does something to us. Worship is the heart of discipleship because it is the gymnasium in which God retrains our hearts.” ~James K.A. Smith, You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit “When saints sin, they know they are not sinning against law, but against love.” ~D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1980), Welsh minister and medial doctor “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” ~Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) SERMON PASSAGE Philippians 1:1-11 (ESV) 1 Paul and Timothy, servantsof Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseersand deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
