Critics liked it. Christians did not. Isaac and Cameron step into the controversy this week, reviewing one of Martin Scorsese's early pictures that revolves around the christian struggle against sin in a fictitious gospel setting. The movie stars William Defoe as Jesus Christ, focusing on the painful temptations of pursing a holy, sinless life while being connected to God. It's cutting into some difficult territory (usually scrutinized as blasphemy), even with an early disclaimer stating that it's not a recreation of the gospel. The core of this spiritual consideration is from an adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis' 1955 novel, which also drove a bit a outrage when the book was released. Providing a unique christian/critic perspective, the host's decided to discuss this movie in-depth, carefully considering the intention of Scorsese, the theological implications, and the philosophical points that this flawed film wrestles with. Is there anything a Christian can respect about this movie? Does the film even hold up outside of the Christian lens? Cinema Spectator is going to find out, with a great 2 hour conversation ready to break it all down. More notable stars include Harvey Keitel, Barbara Hershey, Andre Gregory, Harry Dean Stanton, and David Bowie. Cinema Spectator is a movie podcast hosted by Isaac Ransom and Cameron Tuttle. Nikos Kazantzakis was an author who was most famous for his book Zorba the Greek. He once had a conversation with a monk named Father Makarios. The monk had once said that he wrestled with the devil—figuratively speaking, of course. At a later time, Kazantzakis asked: “Do you still wrestle with the devil, Father Makarios?” … Continue reading Wrestling with God… to lose

“Roman novogrškega pisatelja Nikosa Kazantzakisa o svetem Frančišku Asiškem je umetniško polnokrvna in razgibana predstavitev znamenitega svetnika zahodnega krščanstva, kakor ga dojema razgledan, nazorsko in ustvarjalni domišljiji odprt pravoslavec 20. stoletja.”
“Teach me to dance!” Professor Vrasidas Karalis of Sydney University, and renowned conductor/composer, George Ellis join the boys in the Distillery for a drink and a chat about one of – if not the most – iconic modern Greek texts, “Zorba the Greek”. From the original book by Nikos Kazantzakis, to the 1964 film starring Anthony Quinn, Alana Bates and Irene Pappas, to the incredible music of Mikis Theodorakis, Zorba has become a part of Greek culture and for many non-Greeks, was their introduction to Greece. Professor Karalis and Ellis provide insightful commentary, informed by having met key members of the cast and crew of the film, resulting in one of the more incredible and in-depth Ouzo Talk discussions. In this episode, we explore the expanded fictionalized version of Jesus' life in Nikos Kazantakis “The Last Temptation of Christ”. This story follows the Bible loosely, using Kazantakis thoughts on what Christ must've felt before being crucified. It focuses mainly on his struggles of being human in every sense of the word dealing with earthly temptations such as fear, doubt, lust, violence, and reluctance. We explore this banned novel and decide whether or not it is as blasphemous as the Catholic and Greek Orthodox Church claimed it to be. Saint Francis is a fictionalised biography of Francis of Assisi, whose renunciation of his life of leisure and founding of a religious order dedicated to living in poverty and sharing the Gospels with all living things, profoundly influence the ways in which Christians the world over worship and give service to God even today. Recounted in Nikos Kazantzakis's striking prose through the eyes of the saint's brother, Leo, the life of Saint Francis shines in these pages as a heroic example of inspirational leadership and boundless love for God and all his creatures.

The Last Temptation of Christ).

April shares her experience, strength and hope around AA's third legacy of Service, and the legacy of Unity. She also suggests the idea that service doesn't have to be grandiose and can be as simple as reaching out to another member of the recovery community.TRUSTED SERVANTSThey are servants. Theirs is the sometimes thankless privilege of doing the group's choresTWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 134In Zorba the Greek, Nikos Kazantzakis describes an encounter between his principal character and an old man busily at work planting a tree. "What is it you are doing?" Zorba asks. The old man replies: "You can see very well what I'm doing, my son, I'm planting a tree." "But why plant a tree," Zorba asks, "if you won't be able to see it bear fruit?" And the old man answers: "I, my son, live as though I were never going to die." The response brings a faint smile to Zorba's lips and, as he walks away, he exclaims with a note of irony: "How strange—I live as though I were going to die tomorrow!" As a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, I have found that the Third Legacy is a fertile soil in which to plant the tree of my sobriety. The fruits I harvest are wonderful: peace, security, understanding and twenty-four hours of eternal fulfillment; and with the soundness of mind to listen to the voice of my conscience when, in silence, it gently speaks to me, saying: You must let go in service. There are others who must plant and harvest.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflection
Details, credits, errata: For Holy Week, we have decided to be a bit daring and look at Martin Scorsese’s 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ, the much-maligned work of two Christians, Scorsese and Paul Schrader, based on the work of a third, Nikos Kazantzakis, who published Last Temptation in 1955, two years before his death. With us is dear friend and author of The World Only Spins Forward and The Method, Isaac Butler. We re-recommend Alissa’s excellent interview with Schrader here, which we also mentioned during our episode about his film First Reformed. (Also check out episode 10, if you like, in which we discuss Scorsese’s Silence.)Our image for the week is Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s oil-on-oil painting The Procession to Calvary, made freely available through Wikimedia Commons, which Sam thought was appropriate because it’s all about the circumstances around Jesus and the cross, just like this movie. Jesus is actually a little hard to clock in this painting despite being in its exact center. Bruegel died in 1569 just as the Dutch War of Independence — also known as the Eighty Years’ War — broke out after years of bloodshed and public executions of the kind Jesus would have seen and, eventually, been subject to. Massacres, executions, and biblical scenes feature prominently in his work; it’s profoundly appropriate for him to paint such a sweeping work about the most famous execution in the Western world. Our theme song is Louis Armstrong and His Hot 5’s Muskrat Ramble, made freely available by the Boston Public Library and audio engineering shop George Blood, LP through the Internet Archive. One of my favorite reads of this year was Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis. I love Zorba’s practical wisdom and zest for life. He manages to see the everything and everybody as a miracle worth celebrating, while also recognizing that we’re all just sacks of bones and flesh and flaws, and that everything we do is probably meaningless in the end. In many ways, he’s embodying the principles of inner work for me. If there’s a man who’s mastered the art of living in the present moment, it’s Zorba. This book has made me laugh, feel sad, think deeply, and moved me in many more ways. In this episode, I share my favorite from the book—and hopefully inspire a few of you to read this beautiful story. As always, I'd love to hear from you: https://steliefti.com/the-wild-wisdom-of-zorba-the-greek/ (includes episode transcript) https://twitter.com/steli https://www.linkedin.com/in/steliefti/

Then the Banned Marathon begins with Martin Scorsese's ‘The Last Temptation Of Christ'. Banned and censored in numerous countries, how offensive and blasphemous is the adaption of Nikos Kazantzakis' novel?

It is difficult for him to miss his aim, because his two feet are held firmly planted on the ground by the weight of his whole body. The universe for Zorba, as for the first men on earth, was a weighty, intensive vision; the stars glided over him, the sea broke against his temples. He lived the earth, water, the animals and God, without the distorting intervention of reason. They made a circle round Zorba and the santuri and began dancing on the pebbled shore. Thrilled, I watched them in silence. This is, I thought, the real vein I have been looking for! I want no other. The sight of a man just rends my poor devil, I think; he also eats and drinks and makes love and is frightened, whoever he is: he has his God and his devil just the same, and he’ll peg out and lie as stiff as a board beneath the ground and be food for worms, just the same. Each time that within ourselves we are the conquerors, although externally utterly defeated, we human beings feel an indescribable pride and joy. Outward calamity is transformed into a supreme and unshakable felicity. The Chronic Canon Presents... A Series on Martin Scorsese... Episode 11: The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) Scorsese is once again examining Catholic guilt, but he went straight to the source in his adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis's, The Last Temptation of Christ. Your hosts Frank, Brandon, and Jesse are joined by their very first guest, Nick, to discuss what is quite possibly, to this day, Scorsese's most controversial film; as well as their feelings on religion as a whole, and other movies they find spiritual. As always, there will be spoilers, and yes, the boys are very high.

Lee Valerius is a lay Christian and ardent supporter of the Dallas/Fort Worth apologetics community. In this discussion, we talk about Nikos Kazantzakis’ book, “The Last Temptation of Christ,” and the challenges that it presents to orthodox Christians. From what I’ve come to understand and appreciate about Lee, I was eager to find out what he might think about such a controversial book. Listen along as we chat about the nature of Christ and the ways in which this is interpreted by the author of “The Last Temptation of Christ.”
