Nonduality & The Science of Consciousness - Peter Russell

The spiritual teaching of nonduality, which stems from the Indian philosophy of advaita, teaches that consciousness is the primary reality, the fundamental essence of the cosmos. On the other hand, the current scientific worldview holds that the physical world is primary, and that consciousness somehow, in ways that we do not yet understand, emerges from it. Both views have their challenges. If consciousness is primary, why do we not see it in all things? Conversely if the physical world is primary, how does consciousness arise from something as insentient matter? Peter Russell proposes that the solution to these problems lies in the recognition that information is fundamental to both realities, and physical reality, as we conceive of it, is but a representation of the external world appearing in the mind. This turns our current worldview inside-out; and into one that both beliefs can inhabit. --- Peter Russell studied theoretical physics, experimental psychology, and computer science at the University of Cambridge. He then went to India, to study meditation and Eastern philosophy, and on his return conducted research on the psychology of meditation. A leading thinker on consciousness and contemporary spirituality, he coined the term "global brain" with his 1980s' bestseller of the same name in which he predicted the Internet and the impact it would have on humanity. Other books include The Awakening Earth, Waking Up in Time, From Science to God, and his most recent, Letting Go of Nothing. Peter is a fellow of The World Business Academy, The Institute of Noetic Sciences, The Findhorn Foundation, and an Honorary Member of The Club of Budapest. --- Interview Links: — Peter's website: www.peterrussell.com/index.php — Peter's books: https://amzn.to/3WRrnhd

Peter Russell is an author, speaker and leading thinker on consciousness and contemporary spirituality. Join us in this compelling episode with a luminary whose journey from theoretical physics to spiritual traditions and meditation offers profound insights. Peter's principal interest is the deeper, spiritual significance of the times we are passing through, believing the critical challenge today is freeing human thinking from the limited beliefs and attitudes that lie behind many of our problems - personal, social, and global. His reflections on consciousness, ego and the essence of spiritual traditions reveal the significance of expanding our awareness in an increasingly materialistic world. Peter shares his early explorations in India and subsequent shift towards Eastern philosophy, providing a fresh perspective on how spiritual teachings can guide us in addressing personal and global challenges. Discover the visionary idea of the "global brain," a concept Peter introduced in the early 1980s, where humanity acts as a kind of collective nervous system for our planet. We discuss how this interconnectedness - amplified by recent developments in AI and technology - holds the potential to both enhance and endanger human evolution. We delve into the fascinating question, "Can AI be conscious"? As we explore the nature of consciousness, Peter guides us through the intricate connection between meditation and self-awareness. His insights into finding stillness of mind and understanding the true self underscore the transformative power of meditation in fostering compassion and awareness. We ponder meaningful coincidences, Jung's synchronicity, and how stepping beyond our ego-driven selves might connect us to a collective consciousness. This conversation invites listeners to reflect on the mysteries of existence and the potential global impact of our spiritual awakening.Peter earned a first-class honors degree in theoretical physics and psychology - as well as a master's degree in computer science - at the University of Cambridge, England. He is on the faculty of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a fellow of The World Business Academy and The Findhorn Foundation, and an Honorary Member of The Club of Budapest, and President of Science and NonDuality. peterrussell.comLiked what you heard? Today's guest is screenwriter and Hollywood script doctor Peter Douglas Russell. I wanted to go deep into the back alleys of what Hollywood script doctors actually do in the business. Peter's conversation was eye-opening, to say the least.Peter Russell sold two television pilots in 2017. He enjoys working on projects both as a ghostwriter and as a consultant.  And he can both write and teach what he knows. So many successful screenwriters and producers have no idea how to teach what they do, and so many teachers can't actually sell stories. But Peter does both. Peter was UCLA's Teacher of the Year in 2009. He invented (along with his then partner Cecilia Najar) a process called The Storymaker which you can use to quickly develop an original, complex, vivid story from a single idea — and the Storymaker is helping scores of his students shape wonderful stories.Peter started as a story analyst in the 1990s and has read over 6,000+ screenplays for major film and television giants including Imagine Entertainment, Participant Productions, HBO, CBS, Walden Entertainment and dozens of others. As he read these scripts, he started seeing deep, hidden patterns in the best stories. He wrote these down and started getting jobs FIXING writer's stories. He got good at it — really good.Peter was invited to teach at UCLA in 2004, and it became a passion, too.  He has now been invited to teach television pilot and film story creation at Pepperdine University's Seaver College Screenwriting MFA program, at Story Expo in LA and New York, and many others. Meanwhile, Peter has turned The Storymaker into the most powerful tool for helping storytellers create original vivid stories. Simply and quickly.Enjoy my conversation with Peter Douglas Russell.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Join us for a conversation with Edward Frenkel, mathematician, Berkeley professor and author of the international bestseller Love and Math, as we explore the nature of reality and the fallacy of the naive ideas of determinism and computationalism. Drawing on the landmark achievements of modern mathematics and quantum physics, Frenkel makes the case that consciousness is not computational, that intuition and imagination cannot be captured by algorithms. A regular presenter at the SAND conferences, Frenkel has long argued that the debate about the capabilities and dangers of artificial intelligence can be traced to the question “Who am I?” Hence it creates an opportunity for us to go deeper on the path of self-inquiry. To facilitate this process, it is essential to let go of the misconceptions of the science of the 19th century and to update our worldview with the paradigms of the science of the 21st century. A mind-expanding dialogue about the Infinite nature of consciousness, limits of knowledge, and the alchemy of transformation. Earlier this week, we shared part one of this all-star conversation, all about how to relax your mind. Now, I'm not talking about numbing out or escaping from the stress and overwhelm but actually getting to a state of peace about where things are at, personally and professionally for you. Is it possible? Now, if you haven't heard part one, go back and listen to that one first. But if you're ready to continue on, let's pick back up here with my conversation with Peter Russell as he simplifies how to relax your mind.  It's time to simplify…Here's how.  My special guest today is Peter Russell and he's simplifying how to relax your mind. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: For many “Type A control freaks,” it's hard to let go… Peter shows us a better way, letting in and letting be In a culture that glorifies BUSY, how to return to a natural (relaxed) mind, yet still get things done What the parable of the rope is and how it applies to our minds If we release our thoughts, feelings, interpretations, beliefs and expectations, what's left? What you could hold on to that creates a sense of identity and safety …and ultimately, how this practice of relaxing your mind helps to improve your relationships both personally and professionally. Ok, let's roll the tape back to September 2021 when this conversation originally aired and simplify how to relax your mind with author Peter Russell.  Q: Are you ready to relax your mind? What would it take to relax your mind? Now, I'm not talking about numbing out or escaping from the stress and overwhelm but actually getting to a state of peace about where things are at, personally and professionally for you. Is it possible? My all-star special guest today is Peter Russell and he's simplifying how to relax your mind. Spoiler alert: it's all about letting go of your mindset as holding on creates tension and unmet expectations. Peter shows us that what we get hung up on are generally not the tangible problems we face in the present… but rather, the thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and expectations that we have about them. This is what trips us up, yet they aren't actual things… they only exist in our mind. So, when we learn to strip them of their power, we relax our minds and gain greater peace of mind, no matter what turbulence might be happening around us. Here's how. Today's episode: Peter Russell. Peter started out as a theoretical physicist, a student of Stephen Hawking's, until sometime in the early 70s he made his way to India and had his brain blown open. He became one of the West's early proponents of meditation, and in the 80s wrote several seminal books on consciousness and technology. He's had a big influence on the culture of meditation in general and on Jeff in particular – Jeff tells the story of meeting Peter in San Francisco back in 2008 and afterwards getting “let go” tattooed on his forearm.Appropriate then, that Peter's new book is called Letting Go of Nothing. What does “letting go” actually mean, and why do so many meditation teachers go on about it? We explore this in real-time, as Peter guides us in a wonderfully simple and accessible “effortless meditation” practice. Afterwards, very relaxed, we lazily discuss whether all this effortlessness is really just cheating and won't actually get us anywhere. “Thinking you need to get somewhere is exactly the problem!” says Peter, or something like that. And on we go, a deep dive into the ordinary perfection that is already right here. This is good medicine.Peter's 12 minute effortless meditation practice begins at 7:55 and ends at 19:58.Apologies for the rustles and muffles – sound improves after the first ten minutes.Links:Peter's WebsitePeter's Book: Letting Go of Nothing Peter's Youtube ChannelSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/explorerspod)

#209 In this episode, I'll have a chat with author, speaker, and leading thinker in consciousness and contemporary spirituality, Peter Russell. With all the misunderstandings in the world of the word “Consciousness” and how to really “Let go”, Peter says that the way we view the two is all wrong. According to him, we don't let go of people or things, but our attachment to them - the way we see them. So when we let go, we are actually letting go of nothing. He believes the most critical challenge we face today is to free human thinking from the limited beliefs and attitudes that lie behind so many of our personal, social and global problems. Join us as we venture into what being conscious really means, the how of letting-go, and how it can open into an uncomplicated relationship to what is right now, dissolving whatever gets in the way of us showing up fully, sanely, and gratefully. Peter and I will also consider together how wonder releases tension in the mind, how gratitude releases tension in the heart, and how a radical practice of letting go, releases the whole being into its true nature - beneath and beyond even our humanity. At the end of this episode, you will have learned with great clarity and depth how you can move your life into greater alignment. Enjoy. Earlier this week, we shared part one of this conversation, all about how to relax your mind. Yet once again, we're trying something new this week, splitting up the episode into two parts. So we are releasing the first half now and part two on Friday this week. That way, the content is in a smaller, bite-size portion for you to listen to now, simmer on this entire week and be intentional with integrating what you learn into your everyday life. We are simplifying our episodes to be shorter in length, easier to listen to, on-the-go. I know we all are on-the-go these days and our old ways of listening to podcasts (either on our commute or at the gym) have changed since COVID… let us know if you like this new way of listening to The Simplifiers Podcast. Shorter episodes, split into two for simpler learning. Q: Are you ready to relax your mind? If yes, this one is for you. What would it take to relax your mind? Now, I'm not talking about numbing out or escaping from the stress and overwhelm but actually getting to a state of peace about where things are at, personally and professionally for you. Is it possible? My special guest today is Peter Russell and he's simplifying how to relax your mind. Here's how.  My special guest today is Peter Russell and he's simplifying how to relax your mind. Peter Russell is an author, speaker, and leading thinker on consciousness and contemporary spirituality. He believes the critical challenge today is freeing human thinking from the limited beliefs and attitudes that lie behind many of our problems — personal, social, and global. His mission is to distill the essential wisdom on human consciousness found in the world's various spiritual traditions and to disseminate it in contemporary and compelling ways. Russell earned a first-class honors degree in theoretical physics and psychology — as well as a master's degree in computer science — at the University of Cambridge, England. He also studied meditation and Eastern philosophy in India. He coined the term global brain with his 1980s bestseller by the same name in which he predicted the internet and the impact it would have on humanity.
