Guest: Zac Bookman, CEO and Co-Founder of OpenGovThirteen years after co-founding the government transparency startup OpenGov, Zac Bookman is still finding ways to surprise people. In 2023, Cox Enterprises bought the company for $1.8 billion — but as far as Zac is concerned, “we're just getting started.”“ I left the vast majority of my net worth in the company,” he says. “So I'm a believer. I'm all in.”The mission of powering “more effective and accountable government” has been stable since OpenGov's earliest days, and that mission has informed everything from hiring to M&A to the decision to sell. “These people buy and don't sell,” Zac said of Cox. “They're all in on the mission. And they're all in on taking care of employees. So I see a triple win: A win for employees, win for the investors, win for the customers, maybe a quadruple win for me and the management.”Chapters:(01:46) - OpenGov's mission (04:34) - Shrinking the product-market fit (07:34) - Super misson driven (08:59) - Why OpenGov almost shut down (13:08) - Zac's early career (16:16) - Picking (and losing) a CTO (22:50) - Growing upside-down (25:29) - The SPAC backstabber (31:26) - Why Zac didn't get fired (33:24) - Selling in 2024 (37:04) - Growth by acquisition (42:31) - John Chambers and PMF (49:32) - Zac's cross-country bike ride (56:25) - Expectations vs. reality (58:57) - The coup attempt (01:01:59) - Tiring work (01:05:47) - Going to the White House (01:09:40) - DOGE & disrespect (01:12:54) - “We're just getting started” (01:14:18) - Who OpenGov is hiring (and where) (01:15:13) - What “grit” means to Zac Mentioned in this episode: Joe Lonsdale, Cox Enterprises, OpenAI, the Department of Government Efficiency, Workday, H.R. Meredith Lindvall earned a BS in Environmental Science and a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health both from Emory University. She has a passion for the relationship between people's health and their environments that has led to a commitment to careers in the environment. An Atlanta native, she has worked in the health research, environmental and sustainability departments at Emory Pediatric Pulmonology, Delta Air Lines, The Home Depot and Cox Enterprises where she currently serves as the Assistant Vice President of Waste, Water, Nature & Biodiversity. Meredith joined Cox in 2011 and led Cox's recent industry leading achievement of Zero Waste to Landfill by 2024. She currently serves on the board of LiveThrive Atlanta, who operates the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials, and as Secretary of the Board of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation. Meredith Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Steps to achieving 90% waste diversion rate Employee engagement strategies and initiatives, including translating zero waste to KPIs Cost benefits of moving to zero waste Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Meredith's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? My advice is to meet people where they are. The reason that's important is because you are trying to gain buy-in. If you can put yourselves in their shoes, figure out why they should care, you can translate sustainability to a really wide range of audiences. Think about, when you're not talking to sustainability professionals, how can you translate what your mission is into a way that this person can be passionate about it? Whether that is a time savings, whether that's that they like to go out on the weekends with their grandkids and learn about the environment, they want to deliver financial savings, they want to have a different relationship with their supplier. I would encourage you to carve out time to think about your audience and meet them where they're at and then bring them on that journey with you. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I am excited that the sustainability world is really rapidly expanding past carbon to add things like biodiversity and nature that really, for me, connect our why back to nature and ecosystems and the planet. You heard me say up top that that's really where my passion has been. We're really interconnected, the environment, humans and the planet and species. I'm excited to see biodiversity goals and some of these other things that are really more closely connecting the dots between climate change, species, habitat, and traditional environmental work that, in my opinion, has been a little bit siloed. I'm excited about those coming together. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read? I'm guessing everyone's read Green to Gold, so for a more current one, I would say Drawdown, which builds on Paul Hawkins' work in the ecology of commerce and really breaks it into truly actionable steps that we as a society can take to combat climate change in the next 50 years. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? Knowing that your audience are experts in this field, some I'm sure they've been to themselves, but I would say GreenBiz, which is now Trellis, Sustainable Brands, Environment+Energy Leader, in-house tools. Big helpful things for us have been to gamify the actions that we want employees to take. Whether that is an in-house tool or an off the shelf tool, I would just encourage people to look at what can you do to amplify your work given that sustainability teams are often very small. One that I did want to throw out there that folks might not be as familiar with, but again where my passions intersect, is the National Association of Environmental Managers, which really, from my perspective is connecting the environmental health and safety and sustainability work together. As sustainability becomes more regulated and compliance based, I really see a lot of synergy there in that association. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Cox? Listeners can go to coxenterprises.com and look under the Our Impact tab and there you can see our impact report. You'll see a call out on all of our sustainability work where you'll be able to check out the zero waste to landfill achievement, our water work, our carbon work, and then you'll also be able to look at our social impact impact work there as well for 34 by 34. You can find me on LinkedIn, Meredith Lindvall.

Dan and Ellen talk with Scott Brodbeck, founder and CEO of Local News Now. Many of the news entrepreneurs on this podcast lead nonprofits. Local News Now is a for-profit. Scott owns and operates local news websites in three big Northern Virginia suburbs: Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax County. Dan has a Quick Take about a corporate newspaper owner that is making a big bet on growth at a major metropolitan newspaper. In Georgia, Cox Enterprises is making a $150 million bet that it can transform The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. If Cox is successful, it might serve as a model for other corporate newspaper owners. Ellen has a Quick Take about a piece in the New Yorker by a writer named Nathan Heller. At first glance, it doesn't seem to relate to local news. In fact, the title is pretty wonky: The Republican Victory and the Ambience of Information. But Heller has some smart observations about how information travels in a viral age.

As listeners to our podcast well know, one of our favorite queries for finance executives who have had a lengthy tenure in one place is, “What kept you there?” It may go without saying that something with the word “opportunity” in it is perhaps the most popular response. Still, for certain finance leaders—and especially those whose careers span multiple decades with a single company—this question often summons up a degree of self-reflection that few others bring forth. Such was the case with Cox Enterprises President and CFO Dallas Clement, who afforded our question an extra modicum of contemplation that we had not expected before issuing some of the best career advice that has ever been shared on this podcast. To be fair, we may have prejudged Clement in assuming that his expansive (33 years) and adventurous career within Cox had unfolded without any degree of uncertainty. However, Clement quickly dispersed our presumptions by unveiling two career snapshots. The first came from the early 1990s, when Clement was contemplating exiting the environs of Cox's Atlanta headquarters to practice law while living on the beach in Sarasota, Florida. “I had kept deferring law school, but at the time, I thought that this possibility might make for a pretty good life.” Another came from nearly 15 years later, when Clement—now a father with four daughters—was touring homes with his wife in Silicon Valley as he evaluated the relocation possibilities associated with an appointment that he subsequently would reject. “Even if I wasn't completely happy in my current role, it would have been disruptive to the kids and risky, so I didn't leave,” explains Clement, who perhaps saves his best observations for those career-builders who like him have elected to stay put. He advises: “Once you've gone through that exercise and decided to stay, don't second-guess yourself. Be all in—not only in your professional role but also more broadly in your life, your family, your outside work activities—because work is what you do, it's not who you are. Over time, I have learned to be more mature and thoughtful about this. I really appreciate how lucky I've been in a variety of areas.” –Jack Sweeney Listen to the Episode Below (1:00:27)

In this episode… ChatGPT is an international sensation, with businesses utilizing it for content creation, debugging, translation, and writing code. But this AI tool is still unregulated, raising privacy and security concerns regarding data input. Since ChatGPT is easily accessible to the public, what should you consider before implementing it, and how can you mitigate the associated risks? When adopting ChatGPT for your company, Certified Privacy Professional Jodi Daniels says you should evaluate the tool by conducting due diligence on potential use cases. For instance, a marketing department may want to acquire consumer insights involving personal information. On this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels share their thoughts on ChatGPT's privacy and security implications. Together, they address the current and future state of AI ethics, the importance of ChatGPT regulations in the absence of federal privacy law, and how businesses can protect sensitive data when employing ChatGPT.

Before Jim VandeHei co-founded the media company Politico, the only thing he'd managed was the night shift at Little Caesar's pizza in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. An early passion for politics and journalism led him to Washington, D.C., where he became a political reporter for Roll Call, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. But by 2006, he could see how the internet was transforming journalism, so he walked away from the Post to co-found a digital publication—Politico—with the goal of setting the daily agenda for Washington's power elite. With the financial backing of a local media mogul, Politico took off, but Jim eventually grew frustrated managing a company he didn't own. So in 2017, he took another leap and co-founded Axios, a news website that gained a following for its bullet-point brevity, ready-made for the internet. Both companies have landed well: last year Axios was acquired by Cox Enterprises for over $500 million, and in 2021, Politico was purchased by Axel Springer for a reported $1 billion.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Viewpoint diversity is essential for having meaningful dialogue and achieving true understanding. It allows people to be exposed to different perspectives and consider all sides of an issue without judgment. Viewpoint diversity can lead to better solutions, deeper insights into current problems, and improved collaboration between individuals with vastly different backgrounds and opinions. Without it, the conversation becomes stagnant and limited, ultimately limiting progress. Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes. My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. We have a lot of logistics going on this week in the pod. Excited to share each one. Product of the Week: This product of the week is coming out of Chattanooga founded by Spencer Ware and A.J. Cheek. The name of the company is called Repowr which is an open B2B marketplace of accessible equipment. 3% of trucking companies own 97% of trailer capacity in this highly fragmented market. This leaves little coordination and almost no connected network of vacancy which produces a large amount of inefficiencies in the market. Getting a trailer, renting it, and using it should be as easy as opening an application, finding a trailer, paying for it, and gettin' to hauling. Welcome to Repowr. And trailers are just the trojan horse for the several other equipment verticals in the market. Check out Repowr if you're in needed of trailer today. Question of the Week: This week's questions of the week is how do you find a co-founder? This past week I was chatting with an entrepreneur who was looking at finding a co-founder as it is one of the most important decisions maybe outside of finding your life partner. Naturally the easiest way is to find them through your existing work experience and relationships. If those primary sources are limited, then focus on your trusted network of individuals who would vouch for someone. Once your individual network is exhausted, now comes the tougher part but there are a few successful ways I've seen it done. First, seek to find like minded people. Like minded people in this important instance would be someone else looking to start a company. Timing is always everything especially when it comes to people's career, so go to events where other entrepreneurs would go to. I've heard several occasions where co-founders met at a fire-side chat, Atlanta Startup Village, or Atlanta Startup Convo (the next and last one of the year is on Wednesday). Outside of local events, check out the YC Co-founder Matching platform. This is one of the strongest communities of ambitious people online. Lastly, I have also found Reddit forums and other co-founder forums or websites to have worked in the past but it takes a disciplined process, a scrupulous eye, and significant patience. For those looking to start a company, try some of these strategies and let me know which one worked the best for you. Company Coming Up: There are two companies coming up this week. The first is called Jax Rideshare Rentals and was started by Emory MBA graduate, Julius Bryant. While getting his Masters degree, Julius and his co-founder started leasing out cars they purchased to verified drivers so they could drive Uber and Lyft. Today, they continue to empower people who lack vehicle access in Atlanta and Dallas to earn income via the gig economy but instead of purchasing the cars, they are shifting their focus to organizations who already have the cars and now providing the software and verified drivers to turn those sedentary car lots into cash cows. Keep an eye on this product as they continue to scale city by city. The second company coming up was started by Georgia Tech Alumnus, Murtaza Bambot and it is called HeartBeat. HeartBeat is the operating system to enhance your community. With their software, any community leader and organizer can host conversations, events, and more. The reason I get excited about HeartBeat is the online YouTube reviews. If you search HeartBeat reviews on YouTube, you'll find videos of users who walk through the product for 15 minutes, praising the product and how it solves a real need. If you're looking to put structure and organization around your online community, check out HeartBeat. That is Heartbeat.chat. Keep up the momentum and product love! Raise a Glass: Lastly, let's all raise a glass to Saltbox. Tyler Scriven, Maxwell Bonnie, and Paul d'arrigo have created the co-warehousing space. Across the country, Saltbox owns and operates large warehouses where tenants who run e-commerce stores can store, ship, and scale their product offerings without having to sign a long term lease. There are hundreds of thousands of small businesses getting their start shipping product from the garage, the next affordable and flexible step is Saltbox. They just raised $35M from Cox Enterprises and Pendulum to enhance their software solution to provide a full suite of services improving the logistics for their customers. Congrats to the entire Saltbox team! Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word! Resources discussed in this episode: Product of the Week: Repowr Question of the Week: How do you find a co-founder? In this episode… When it comes to data collection, studies show that more than 80% of consumers value privacy. With security breaches and privacy violations becoming increasingly prevalent, how can businesses prioritize these matters to foster customer trust? To start, companies must take inventory of their data to fully understand each component and establish use cases. Another requirement is to create privacy notices, pages, or sections to connect with the consumer and develop their trust. Jodi and Justin Daniels' book Data Reimagined: Building Trust One Byte At a Time teaches businesses how to manage customer data to ensure privacy and security. In today's episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Chad Franzen of Rise25 talks with Jodi and Justin Daniels about prioritizing privacy and security concerns. Together, they discuss how businesses perceive and utilize data, the privacy and security concerns of data collection, and how to develop customer trust through privacy and security measures.

Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes. My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Y'all we are going to need to shorten this intro from here on out as there is just so much commerce going on in Atlanta and the Southeast. Let's get into it. Blog Post of the Week: The blog post of the week and I don't know if all this press is a direct correlation with news from last week of Andreeson Horowitz investing $350M in Adam Neumann's new apartment company, but Neumann's vision has already been executed on and by Birmingham's lodestar entrepreneur: Bill Smith of Shipt fame which sold for $550M in 2017 to Target started Landing which is a very similar concept to Neumann's – just 3 years earlier – where a community of residents can pick and choose between fully furnished apartments across the country. TechCrunch did an interview with Bill this week and it's fantastic. We've linked to it in the show notes but if you're a student of entrepreneurship, go-to-market, product packaging and more, watch how these two entrepreneurs duel it out for years to come – and make sure to add butter and salt to the popcorn. Product of the Week: I recently caught up with CEO of PressSports, Conrad Cornell at the SouthSource Tortuga party on the West Side and he shared that they just launched a completely revamped product at PressSports. I downloaded the app which has over 10,000 reviews with an average rating of 4.9 on the app store. High school and college athletes download Press Sports to start, document, and organize the digital portfolio of their careers so friends and coaches can engage and connect with them outside of the traditional social media outlets. Companies Coming Up: Where do we even begin here? The Inc 5000 list came out and there are too many on the list to name for this short podcast. Atlanta Ventures Founder, David Cummigns put together a list of 30 that have a three year growth rate of at least 300%. Not only is the Inc 5000 list a great annual water mark for growth, one would be hard pressed to find a better list to prospect fast, growing companies. We've highlighted several on this podcast including Stord, PrizePicks, Neighborly Software, SingleOps and several others. One we haven't explored in depth is the overall number 2 on the list, right out of Atlanta which is SnapNurse. More on that rocketship in the future! Take a look at the list through links in the show notes. Question of the Week: We get to talk to so many investors and entrepreneurs week in and week out and several recurring questions come up. Here is one where we got this week from an investor and it was: how do y'all measure product-market fit. This is where art meets science in startups, but to me, product-market fit is 10 unaffiliated (so not your Uncle or roommate) customers who raves about your product AND there is a clear line of sight to a repeatable, scalable customer acquisition model. I know that still leaves many questions but let's start this new segment with that answer this week. Raise a Glass: Several raise a glass moments this past week: Michael Gottfried and Ashish Mistry raised $2M for PCKL (gotta love a 4 letter domain). PCKL is serving the massively growing market of Pickle Ball. Shop for paddles, balls, and accessories. PCKL joins the burgeoning D2C empire with their first company Piper golf balls. Motivo, led by Rachel McCrickard, raised $14M led by Cox Enterprises to tackle the shortage of therapists by connecting mental health organizations with virtual clinical supervisors. Congrats to Rachel and team. Lastly, legendary entrepreneur, Bill Nussey joined TechSquare Ventures and Engage. We've covered TechSquare and Engage on before this podcast. He led SilverPop to 600 employees and their eventual sale to IBM. Bill wrote an eloquent LinkedIn post worth reading that we put in the show notes. Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word! Resources discussed in this episode: Blog Post of the Week: Bil Smith: The Anti Adam Neumann Product of the Week: Press Sports Company Coming Up: Inc 5000 Atlanta David Cummings Growth of 300% or more Raise a Glass: PCKL Raises $2M Motivo Raised $14MBill Nussey Joins Tech Square Ventures and Engage
PNR: This Old Marketing | Content Marketing with Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose
This week Joe and Robert cover the big news out of Disney. Do they really have more subscribers than Netflix? Are they the greatest media company of all-time? (the answer is yes) Axios sells to Cox Enterprises, creating a local media opportunity that may be unprecedented. At the 5x revenue valuation, the boys ponder how a content marketing division could be valued (revenue or not). Lyft creates a media division...but the real story is the ongoing diversification of audience and customer revenue. Rants and raves include online gambling content and whether it's better or worse to work from home. IRA Pearl is the Vice President of Environmental Sustainability at Cox Enterprises. Ira is responsible for leading Cox's sustainability strategy, including driving ambitious goals to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2024 and to become water and carbon neutral by 2034. IRA has more than 25 years of experience, both in consulting and leading environmental departments at large Fortune 500 companies, as well as in operational leadership roles. He spent most of his career developing and executing strategies in the areas of renewable energy, sustainability, climate change, and environmental compliance. Ira Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How being a private company impacts the way sustainability is handled How Cox establishes sustainability goals and targets - ground up process Cox's approach to employee engagement and the benefits of having top down support Sustainability reporting at Cox and the emphasis on transparency Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Ira's Final Five Question Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Understand the business side of things. Having a passion for sustainability is great, but you need to make your work economically sustainable as well. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? So many companies are now coming to the table and seeking to reduce their footprint. The accompanying level of investment is driving innovation and cost reduction and it helps all of us get there faster. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read? I would recommend Confessions of a Radical Industrialist by Ray Anderson, who was the CEO of interface. It talks about how running your company sustainably is just good business. I think Cox has proven this by delivering double digit returns on our sustainability investments. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? There's so many it's difficult to list them all. My web browser has so many bookmarks, but one of the ones I use a lot is the EIA website, the Environmental Administration website, because it is such a credible source of truth and data that helps identify trends and lends credibility to the analyses behind these resources. I also listen to a lot of business news, which more and more is covering ESG. I keep abreast of a lot trends and what other companies are doing and evolving technology by subscribing to a bunch of email list servers that that give me that data and feed it to my inbox every day. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Cox? They can go to coxenterprises.com/cox-conserves where they can learn more about our programs. If you want to learn about the investments we're making in Cleantech, you can go to https://coxnewinvestments.com. Our vision there is to take the problems facing the world and transform them into business opportunities. At Cox, we want to run a business that gives employees a better life, gets the return on investment and has a positive impact on society.
