1. GUNJACK - REVERSAL OF FORTUNE by
It always seems to come back to the year 1995 for me for some reason. What a year in music it was! That was the year a fella named Gert-Jan Bijl made a HUGE tune called "Arkest's Blaze" under his GERD pseudonym. This tune echoed all the way from the Netherlands, to Detroit and eventually to my native California via our PLANET TEN event series featuring 1st and 2nd wave talent from the OG techno scene. I will never forget how the reversed bits of this tune echoed back through the Shrine auditorium at us, as we were slack jawed in awe.
1995: Joey Beltram drops PLACES double pack on Tresor label. The main single of which is playful tune called GAMEFORM. This is a tune I often played doubles on wax and wanted to rearrange a bit to get even more nastiness out of the cut! Enjoy this cheeky edit of a classic tune created by a North American electronic music icon! JB is a fucking legend!!!
Another edit from '95, this time Thomas Bangalter on his seminal ROULE' imprint! This one is my version of "VENTURA" a DJ fave from Roulé 301!!!
I believe Carl Craig wrote this in '96 or late '95... What a golden era for music! It's super hard to do justice to a classic like this so I wanted to forgo any sort of intention to better the original, and just make an edit I can actually use in my sets for a funky and soulful addition to the crate!
In 2000/2001 I was bang into the Japanese techno scene. I lived about a half an hour outside the city and worked in Shinjuku/Ikebukuro. A magical little nightclub called MANIAC LOVE was my getaway. I often studied the mixes of the residents and guests from the back of the room on my perch. One artist: DJ Shufflemaster played a track that sent the room into a frenzy and I was struck dumb by it's loose and lumbering groove. GEYLANG is a tune I later found on 12" on the wall at Disk Union in Shibuya and have played the hell out of since! Loop techno was in full effect in the early 00's and this one was so much fun to work out!
1997: Mister Luke Slater made a tune that was basically just a loop, but showed us how modular, off beat techno could jaunt its angular, little booty right up front and center. Another edit for my DJ sets, this is "SIGNAL" from the PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS album "THE ELECTRIC FUNK MACHINE" a record that CHANGED MY LIFE! Thank you PAS/LUKE for showing us the way so early on!!!
Back in 1999, when Drumcode was still TECHNO, the maestro Gaetano Parisio made a 12" with a bunch of untitled tracks. The last tune in the B2 slot always got mad play in my sets and I doubt I will ever find a clean copy again. Here is my cheeky edit of "Untitled B2" from Drumcode19 by Gaetano!!!
FRONTLINEBEATS.COM EXCLUSIVE! SEE THE VIDEO: https://frontlinebeats.wordpress.com/2022/07/02/in-one-take-gunjack-55032-live/ The concept is simple: what you see is what you get. Six MIDI channels up top on the faders, 16 pads for drums, bass and samples. Now record a song from start to finish in one take, with no editing after the fact. Thanks to our friends at Ableton Live and Akai, Gunjack has done just that! With a "put up or shut up" attitude, B. Gibbs, AKA Gunjack shows he understood the assignment with a heavily nostalgic and emotive piece that is equal parts Stranger Things and Squarepusher.
