Our guest today is an artist drawn to the abstract, an artist with no love nor concern with the mainstream*, an artist happily dismantling expectations around music and sound and creating some of the most extraordinary and powerful bass music in the known universe.Kevin Martin's early recordings were abrasive industrial tracks that challenged the listener to stay the course. His work with Justin Broderick (formerly of Napalm Death and Godflesh) came out under the moniker of Techno Animal and still sound as abstract and dangerous today as they did 30 years ago. However Martins sound continually evolved taking influences from Hip-Hop, Reggae and Dub until his current incarnation of The Bug was born.The Bug released an incredible run of bass heavy tracks for Swamp 81, Ninja Tunes and Pressure Records. The Bugs 'London Zoo' album was heralded as a game changer in UK Bass music, bringing together some of the best MCs in the country such as Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Daddy Freddy, Tippa Irie and many more.Kevin also recorded with King Midas Sound, Fennez and released a number of incredible ambient albums under his own name including his current release 'Black' a tribute to Amy Winehouse.We are always looking out for people who totally commit to their music and that is why we are delighted to welcome Kevin Martin to the podcast.Before that it's all Hot-Dogs and Gong-Baths.*(May have some love and concern for the mainstream). Reka Zalan is a Berlin-based Techno DJ and promoter, co-hosting the ://elements series at ://about blank, where she's resident and part of the booking team. Her activities in the local music and club culture scene also include working at Hard Wax, one of Berlin's essential record store addresses. Reka's sound is a palpable blend of cosmic and driving Techno, combining deep, gloomy vibes and trippy elements as well as percussion-heavy, groovy and tooly facets. Besides her passion for Techno realms, she loves various forms of (UK) Bass music, Electro (Wave) or experimental beatless soundscapes. She also plays under the moniker No Life Signal, a B2B duo with ://elements colleague and DJ fellow THNTS. Since early 2023 now, she's been a member of the local residents team of well-known Berlin Tresor club. Furthermore she's part of the Coppi collective, a project space with weekly community-based studio sessions in an off-location between Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg.  How long have you been DJing?  Since the summer of ‘23
 Why did you get into it? I got into DJing because I wanted to use it as a conduit to release and play my own tracks, as well as to inspire and encourage a positive and healthy club culture in my community. 
 What events have you played? I have played a couple of house parties, and two shows on stage as a solo performance. 
 Where do you live?  Missoula
 Where are you from originally? Grew up outside of Detroit, Michigan, and ended up in Montana after 3 years in Oregon. 
 What inspires you to DJ?  I'd say that getting people moving and dancing can bring people together, with the side effect of introducing them to new music and genres that they previously hadn't considered. 
 What inspires you about electronic music culture? Electronic music, the way that I see it, is not only about dance, but is a way for artists to truly express themselves, and free themselves from the rigid boundaries set by the music industry at large. I think that electronic music culture is filled with various artists and followers who want to truly express themselves and encourage the gathering of people in communities, which is something that I'm all about. 
 What genres are in your mix?  House, UK Bass, Drum & Bass
 Can you tell us a labout your mix?   I'd say this mix encompasses the genres that I'm interested in at this moment in time. 
 What are some hashtags that best fit your mix?  UK Bass, House, Classic Dubstep, Electronica
 Who are some of the artists in your mix? Pangaea, Leon Vynehall, Joy Orbison, (a few tracks by various artists from the label CloudCore, which deserves a mention)

Ploy makes mad music – a lot of his music sounds mad. It shouldn't necessarily make sense but it does. The term discombobulated comes to mind at times but in the very best way. No, seriously we mean that as a compliment. For many years Ploy has been one of the most interesting producers in underground Electronic music having released records with the likes of Hessle Audio, Hemlock, Timedance and L.I.E.S. No two have sounded the same and each of them have drawn upon a musical influence or five as Ploy attempts to piece together his own flavour of dance. As an artist he has continued to evolve – creating his own world in which to release the music that feels right to him. Ploy's own record label, Deaf Test, has been integral in the evolution of his sound. Acting as a platform in which to experiment and explore new sounds and concepts. One challenge of his career thus far has been working out a way to connect the dots between his own musical tastes, productions and outlook towards club culture. However, as of late his focus has been rooted in the wonkier undercurrents of UK Bass music and its intersection with Tech House. A new record on Timedance forthcoming cements this idea. We invited Ploy to record a mix and the result… Well, you are in for a treat as we gain an insight into some of the music which makes Ploy tick on the dancefloor.

artist statement from Sister Zo: My sound has evolved a lot over the past year living in New York. While I feel everyone knows me primarily for my percussive broken beat productions and sets, anyone who's seen me play recently will know I've been leaning heavily into driving psychedelic techno and hard groove house. So I wanted to make something that reflects my evolving tastes. In that sense this mix is very much a statement of range and intention. I'll always love UK Bass and broken beat stuff but there's nothing like a good deep grooving wormhole to lose yourself in as a DJ and a dancer. Also, having been heavily involved in plant medicine this past year I've been making an effort to incorporate sounds that connect with my experiences in ceremony—sometimes light and joyous, often dark, cavernous and all-consuming. But, not to take myself or this vision too seriously, this mix is first and foremost for moving your bones and shaking ass, but in a hypnotic sort of way. Hope you enjoy it start to finish.
