Lara Markel has been in the real estate field for 15+ years. Beginning her career as a residential REALTOR®, she specialized in helping first time buyers to achieve their dream of homeownership by using down payment assistance programs and creative financing. An opportunity led her to commercial real estate where she worked as a private capital multifamily sales specialist helping in the acquisition and dispositions of apartment buildings. Lara Vernon is our guest for this episode.  She is a racing driver that is rapidly moving up the ranks of amateur racing.  We have raced alongside her at our last event in Charlotte on the Roval and she just returned from winning the B class event with the true 24 hour race at CMP with the Sorry For Party team, driving in both their Firebird and 944 race cars during the race and posting the fastest laps for the weekend.  Lara also owns a boutique exotic car dealership called “Rare Exotic Vehicles” in Asheville, North Carolina, that deals with very cool vintage hot rods and cars from the 1930’s to excellent examples suitable for Radwood and other venues. We hope you enjoy this episode!   Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  Several excellent cars Lara has currently that are looking for a new home. 2)  How autocross was (again) the gateway drug towards her wheel to wheel racing.  It’s not free, but it is very good way to learn car control and is also a low cost way of getting started.  (Winning several races and a championship was also a good way to show she was on the right track) and led to Lara getting her SCCA racing license. 3)  Vicki confuses the Fiesta ST with the Fiestas that she remembered from years ago.  Bill has not done a good job of visiting car dealers with her.  This will likely be remedied shortly. 4)  How she came to first meet Ron Mexico/Jeff Caplan and then the Race Bar team.  How her first race with Race Bar went in late 2019 and then again at the Charlotte Roval a few weeks ago.  An excellent companion for getting into the wonderful abyss that is endurance racing. 5)  How Lara attempted to challenge Dick Freelane’s mustache, quite a noble but usually futile effort. 6)  We hear about her experience racing at Road Atlanta in the snow.  The track is plenty exciting without having to rely on being snow covered. 7)  Lara has pursued and succeeded in amateur racing and has begun to dip her toe into some of the higher level opportunities with teams and sponsors.  It is a challenging sport to convert to making a living, or even breaking even. 8)  Lot of stories of her racing with Race Bar and some of the shared trials and tribulations both teams had at the Roval with Lucky Dog.  9)  How Lara almost met Randy Pobst at the Charlotte Roval, how she almost raced against him, and how her Lobster faired against Randy’s Moose. 10)  We discuss how to make your own skid pad using cracked corn animal feed.  If she pulls it off, we hope we get an invite. 11)  She not only wins in “meat space” but also won a 24 hour endurance race in iRacing. 12)  The Ayrton Senna miniseries came up again in discussion.  We cannot wait for it to come out on Netflix.  If you have not seen the Ayrton Senna documentary entitles “Senna”, you are missing a great one. 13)  Vicki shows off her car skills by confusing a Kia Soul with a Nissan Cube.

Lara Merriken is a dreammaker. I have so much love and respect for this woman. I knew she was special from the minute I met her at VeloSwap in 2003, slinging energy bites in plastic baggies. I had a feeling she would change the world, I just didn’t realize how much she would change it and how quickly. Lara is the founder of Larabar. If you aren’t familiar with Larabar, I’d be shocked, because it’s now an absolute empire. She had the idea to create healthy, nutritious energy bars when she was frustrated with her options on a hike many years ago. The goal was to use clean, simple ingredients. She started by dreaming up flavors and then mixing dried fruits and nuts in her kitchen. That was almost 20 years ago. Today Lara is a free agent of sorts, as she sold Larabar to General Mills a mere 5 years after she officially launched. Hers is a massive success story on the business front, but it’s what she’s done since that many don’t think about – how to redefine yourself after a company with your own name is no longer yours. We talk about that and so much more in today’s episode. You may not know that I have a special connection to Larabar. When I officially debuted Skirt Sports at the 2004 Ironman Wisconsin, I was sponsored by Larabar. My claim to fame is that I’m the only athlete Larabar ever sponsored! Tennis: Renewed passion, healthy obsession & drive to succeed How motherhood has changed her outlook After the interview I pulled out a few Larabars and offered them to her. Which is funny because don’t you think she probably has her own? Anyway, I asked, "Do you still eat a lot of Larabars?" and she said, “I always test them.” She wants to know that they’re fresh and delicious and spot-on with the recipes. I love this about her. I’ve always respected Lara and really appreciated that she is such a genuine, “normal” person. The trick is when a normal person does something so extraordinary, how does she adapt and integrate her “new normal” into her life without compromising who she is? The really cool thing? This can apply to any big life change. How do you retain your core essence: the beautiful things that make you who you are when you experience change? Somehow Lara has navigated these waters with grace and self-love and is passing them down to her son as we speak. If you haven’t tried Larabars before, go do it. Her original Cashew Cookie will always be my fave. I saw that they just released a new Protein line which I’m now salivating to try. Allright then, you know what time it is. Bleary eyed with newborns and messy hair, yearning for connection and parenting help, Lara and Jenn found themselves (and met each other!) in a new mom group. After 3 months of conversation about the angst surrounding tummy time and Velcro swaddles, they took their conversation to a more personal level over red wine with their kids in ergos. Gradually, the conversations increased to nighttime texts over teething, sleep challenges, and how to navigate the transition to solids. As Jenn and Lara began to get their footing together in their new role as moms, they created the space for real conversation over adult dinner to finally talk about themselves, as women and as friends, not just how they were moms. Over this dinner, they both realized that there was a need and space for something big and exciting in each of their lives. Lara shares what reactivating the Real You means to her. How Lara came to begin her journey to reactivating herself. The ladies discuss what to look for when it’s time to reboot yourself. Big life transitions often predicate the need for big changes. Not all changes have to do with wanting to look different. Rather than weight loss, you should be looking at food, physical activities, relatinships and stress management to determine if you need a change. Most successful leaders prioritize mind, body and health. The best place to start is by listening to your physical body and how it feels with different foods, or different experiences. Lara shares how to get started with some great baby steps. Ie. The breakfast experiment. Meditation is effective, and it doesn’t have to be the formal meditation you’re used to hearing about (Lara explains). Mindful eating, and only eating a table. The ladies discuss the different stories we tell our bodies. (ie. all or nothing) The trick to setting goals is to make them inspiring and achievable. If you can do nothing else, get your sleep sorted, then add in leafy greens. Vibrant health playbook - It’s your personal road map to feeling like your real self, and understanding why you want what you want. Many people have the identify illusion, where they have this image of what the ideal person looks like or does. Build up trust with your intuition. Five Days Of Journaling For Visionary Women Kelly asks Lara what her Inner Voice is asking of her.       In Lara’s Voice:   “Women on the Rise. They’re all very high achieving women in some part of their life and in all parts of their life. They feel that they’ve lost touch of this sort of vibrant powerful version of themselves; which I would call, the real them.”   “As I started changing the food on my plate and the way that I was moving my body and just thinking about taking care of myself, everything changed.”   “Someone is ready for a reboot or not feeling like they can achieve whatever they’ve set out to achieve is that they tend to be in this chaotic mind state. And I don’t mean that in the kind of pathological sort of way, but they feel disorganized, anxious, tired, lazy, frazzled and lack in confidence”   “If you’re not looking at things like food, physical activities, relationships, career, stress management - if you’re not looking at all of those things, just changing your food is not gonna make any difference.”   “When you look at the most successful leaders, whether they’re entrepreneurs in the leadership space, they all prioritize mind, body and health.”   “Start connecting your mood to the food choices that you make, for example, which is not something to think about. Your mood, your energy level.”   “Meditation doesn’t have to be sitting on a cushion in the middle of a yoga studio, ohming. It can be a very practical day-to-day thing. It can be as simple as picking something to notice throughout the day.”   “Unconscious stories are what we tell ourselves about being healthy and taking care of our bodies. All or nothing is one of those stories. It’s a very common, unconscious story that afflicts high achieving women, to a larger degree, that I call the all or nothing trap.
