Gut health, high cortisol, hormone imbalances, and nervous system regulation—you've seen them all over social media, but (1) why do they happen? and (2) how do you actually address them? This week, we brought on Lisa Vasile NP (Grace's functional medicine doctor!) from 4 Better Health Functional Medicine in Massachusetts. To become a patient at 4 Better Health, visit their website: https://www.4betterhealthmedicine.com/ We covered a LOT of ground, including: The difference between functional medicine and traditional medicine How functional medicine doctors approach treating health issues vs. traditional doctors Why insurance companies often don't cover functional medicine (and why that's often better for the patient!) Why so many people deal with gut health issues and how to start addressing yours Why high cortisol is so common and practical ways to regulate your nervous system *After filming, Lisa wanted to add one note—functional medicine is not anti-medication. It works in tandem with medication. The goal is to get patients to thrive and feel healthy. Lisa/4 Better Health Functional Medicine can work with patients in Massachusetts and Florida. Scarlett Lewis: How to Choose Love After Tragedy – Part 2

Best Of Neurosummit

Why is there so much violence and hatred in our communities today? What could cause someone to commit a heinous crime? Lisa continues the conversation today with Scarlett Lewis, the mother who experienced unimaginable tragedy when her 6-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, was killed during the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting massacre in December of 2012. After the tragedy, Scarlett knew she had to find an understanding as she didn't want the shooter to impact her living son. She knew she needed to move through the emotions. Scarlett began asking if it could be that society has failed those children who have had difficult experiences, thereby leading them to commit terrible acts of violence. Scarlett discusses emo-diversity and how the more emotions we have, the healthier we are. Emotions assist you to navigate and provide information to help you live your best life. We don't want to limit them. You can then examine your thoughts around the emotion. Scarlett talks about starting the “Choose Love” Movement which is now in 14,000 schools around the world. She asks us to stop squashing and ignoring painful emotions. There's a healthy way to adjust. It's done through presence. Scarlett talks about the “moment of choice.” You react and you can thoughtfully respond. Our fear center is very fast, due to survival. Everything is filtered through the fear center first. You may have an immediate reaction. Your brain's job is to defend you. Most people are living from their reactive center. It becomes easy to get triggered. But we can control this by pausing and thoughtfully responding with love or compassion. Life gives us plenty of situations to choose love. If your life is not in danger, pause and get curious about that person's point of pain. If someone is not kind, they are coming from pain. You can think about how to respond. You can learn to love and accept yourself. Know that you are not the cause of that person's pain. Even if they are lashing out at you, it is because they are in pain. This can lead to compassion and even possible forgiveness. The person is 100% responsible for their behavior, but you can de-escalate the conversation, and this allows you to be in control. You can move beyond to healthier relationships. Forgiveness is the way to healthy relationships and meaningful connections. This is a learned behavior. We need to find role models. This can begin to be taught in schools so we can move forward and can move through pain. Scarlett decided to focus on the root cause – pain. She was determined to heal her own pain and to teach others to do the same through her “Choose Life” movement. Scarlett talks about meeting Nick Ortner who taught her about using tapping for healing. She also shares the story of meeting Wayne Dyer and the profound affect he had on her life. Scarlett discusses how communication is the opposite of violence. Communication is connection and connection is love. Love is what we all have in common. We are all human beings, and everyone wants to feel connection and love. This is the basis of what Scarlett teaches. We all want safety and peace. We need to be more vocal and courageous to achieve this and not devolve into bullying, whether through words or actions. It all starts with our thoughts and our words. Scarlett realized she needed to be the model of recovery and post-traumatic growth for her son. In every single action, we can be kind, compassionate, and ultimately choose love. If we can change one angry thought into a loving thought, our entire lives can change. We can truly be the change we want to see. This is the basis of the “Choose Love” Movement. Through her “Choose Love” organization, Scarlett took the tragedy and turned it into an opportunity to build a culture of love, resilience, and forgiveness. She is the author of several books including, “Nurturing, Healing, Love” and the upcoming “From Sandy Hook to the World: How the Choose Love Movement Transforms Lives.” This is Part 2 of the interview.  Info: ChooseLoveMovement.org.

Cheryl Esposito welcomes Nicolas Ortner, New York Times bestselling author of The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living. Nick's work explores EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) aka “tapping,” a healing modality that combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. EFT suggests we can tap into our body's brilliance for healing. When Nick learned about EFT Tapping, he was startled by the results. He wanted to test it. His breakthrough documentary film, The Tapping Solution, follows ten people who use tapping to overcome significant challenges including chronic back pain, insomnia and more. The documented results are impressive. Nick has supported charities devoted to healing trauma such as ProjectLight: Rwanda, which aids genocide victims; The Veterans Stress Project, for veterans with PTSD; and You Can Thrive! for women with cancer; and countless individuals around the world. One of his opportunities to help, hit very close to home. Nick lives in Newtown, CT, the home of Sandy Hook Elementary School, where a shooting tragedy occurred December 14, 2012. 26 people – 20 of them children – were killed that day. The community continues to work through their shock and grief. Nick will share a story of EFT/tapping providing help to some community members in the aftermath, in support of their healing toward thriving once again. This episode of Do Your Thing is another gorgeous conversation from my Instagram live archives where I spoke to Tricia Murray all about about navigating anxiety as a parent. Tricia is a Mum of 4 boys, and she is also a Mind Coach and Business Mentor, helping anxious, stressed and frazzled women find calm and ease in their lives and businesses. As well as supporting women with anxiety Tricia has also been on her own anxiety journey, only realising in her 30's that what she had experienced throughout her life WAS actually anxiety. It was only when Tricia was well into Motherhood that she really began to understand and take back control of her anxiety - and in turn also support hundreds of other women to do the same. Anxiety is a topic that I know will be relevant to so many of us (myself included) and parenthood can be a real trigger as well as a powerful motivation to support ourselves. And during this conversation Tricia talks so insightfully about the topic armed with a huge amount of both personal and professional wisdom, experience and empathy. I really this episode provides you with some support, solidarity and suggestions to help you realise you CAN take back control over your difficult thoughts and feelings, and that your anxiety doesnt need to define you or your experience of Motherhood. Over the four decades of his career, he wrote more than 40 books, including 21 New York Times bestsellers.   In this interview, you'll hear some of Wayne's story and how at the age of 34 he drove to Biloxi, Mississippi to visit the grave of his father, an alcoholic and an abusive man who had abandoned him, his mother and two brothers when he was just an infant. Although his father had died 10 years earlier, Wayne had only just found out about his death.    He drove to the grave that day with a level of anger so great, so deep from years of built up hurt, that he had two tasks in mind:  To find out if it was even acknowledged on his death certificate that Wayne was his son, and to literally "pee" on the grave of the father that he held all this hatred, anger and resentment towards for 34 years. What came out of that visit, however, completely and forever changed his life. It is one of the most beautiful stories you'll ever hear.  It shares a message of forgiveness, and it's power to transform, that is truly life-changing.   This audio, pulled from the video interview conducted with him, is part of the pre-event video series for the upcoming 16th Annual Tapping World Summit.  To access the other videos in the pre-event video series and to get free access to the full 10 days of the online event for free, go here.    —------------------------------- To go deeper with Tapping, download The Tapping Solution App for FREE on iOS and Android.   Download on iOS or Android: https://thetappingsolution.onelink.me/LtOO/tspodcast   Featuring over 600+ EFT Tapping Meditations, numerous Active Transformational Meditations, soothing Sleep Journeys, engaging Tapping Challenges, and more, The Tapping Solution app is your ultimate companion for eliminating stress & embracing a more vibrant life with Tapping. Susan Burrell loves supporting women in their inner growth toward finding their true empowerment. And she shares how we can truly discover our true selves in this episode. For Susan, empowerment is about having the courage to live your life according to what you truly desire. It's about making decisions free from influences such as fears or doubt but rather being driven by a real sense of purpose and passion.Susan also talks about how to tap into your intuitive side -- in which she states people are afraid of their inner wisdom due to its psychic nature. She relates this to her own experience as she went through a long, contentious divorce after 28 years of marriage.Susan is an Intuitive Healer and Spiritual Guide at the crossroads of life with more than 25 years of experience counseling and supporting people in transforming from the inside out.Susan is living a life that is wholehearted. After living through many of life's challenges she made the choice (like our girl Tina Turner) to own her life and use her intuition to make powerful changes. What is wholehearted living? Simply put, it means living and loving with your whole heart. According to Brené Brown, wholehearted living “is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness.” It's understanding that yes, you are imperfect, vulnerable, and afraid, but you are also brave and worthy of love and belonging. What You Will Learn From This Episode:01:14 - What Susan Burrell is Obsessed With 03:03 - Getting Through Divorce and Discovering Her True Self07:50 - Tapping Into Your Intuitive Side15:01 - The Law of Circulation vs. The Law of Attraction 20:02 - Activating Your Light Leaders 21:51 - Chaos as Precursors for Amazing Changes25:35 - Giving Back to Oneself and OthersResources Mentioned:Tapping Into Wealth by Margaret Lynch Raniere - https://margaretlynchraniere.com/ The Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner - https://www.thetappingsolution.com Emotional Freedom Technique by Dr. Dawson Church - https://www.eftuniverse.com/ Learn More About Susan Burrell:Website: https://www.susanburrell.com/Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/empowering-chats-with-susan-burrell/id1450867973Facebook: https://web.facebook.com/susanburrellpageInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/liveyourempoweredlife/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LYILSusanSee What Your Obsessed Girls Are Doing and Send Us Feedback!CROWN AND COMPASS | Linktree - https://linktr.ee/crownandcompassgirls

Today's passage, “Tapping away stress.” Dr. Roger Callahan, a clinical therapist and fellow with the American Academy of Psychotherapists Treating Addictions, in the 1980s had a client named, Mary, who had severe phobia of water.  He went through traditional therapeutic processes with her, to visualize a swimming pool, to expose her to small amounts of actual water and etcetera. Mary was in his office one day complaining of how her stomach would turn or she would feel bouts of nervous butterflies in her belly whenever she saw water. Dr. Callahan had been reading about the Chinese Meredian theory, which said the stomach meredian was located beneath the eye. He had an idea... He asked Mary to think of the water, while tapping beneath her eye to activate the stomach meridean.  As she looked at the picture of the swimming pool, she began tapping under her eye and almost immediately she said that her fear had evaporated, the phobia of water was gone. The meridian system is a concept in traditional Chinese medicine. Meridians are thought of as pathways through which life-energy, what is qi, flows.  Although, there is little scientific evidence supportive of the claim, millions have reported the benefits from acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology, which also use the body's energetic meridian points to ease or cure all sorts of ailments, including stress and depression. So, in tapping the face, inside the wrist, the arms and other points may alleviate stress because the message of safety it sends to the amygdala.   So what is the amygdala? The amygdala is the part of your brain that interprets your environment if it senses or perceives danger, it sends a distress signal triggering perhaps a trauma response. A great way to explain this to children is to use the upstairs/downstairs metaphor. The amygdala is part of our downstairs brain.  We can literally be trapped ‘downstairs' in a battle of fight or flight because the amygdala is in control downstairs. The downstairs brain is seen as more primitive.  Our upstairs brain contains the cerebral cortex and its various parts, including the middle prefrontal cortex located behind the forehead. So how does tapping take us from the downstairs ‘fear' mode to upstairs prefrontal cortex ‘safe and secure' mode? What a great visualization that is to ascend a staircase to safety… Well think of it this way. If someone robbed you at gunpoint and kickstarted your fight or flight response, would you be able to suddenly start tapping the cheeks or the forehead of your face? So when for someone with PTST, post traumatic stress disorder, tapping sends calming messages from the upstairs to the downstairs brain to say, hold up a second, you're ok.  If you combine tapping with re-processing of trauma by victualing what happened as you tap yourself and speak statements of safety, the idea is the trauma alleviates and the healing begins. If you'd like to learn more about self-healing through tapping, I am including a link to the practitioner I admire as expert in the field, Nick Ortner in the details section episode.Remember the adage, “Check your feet”. If you are in a state of PTST, your body is shutting down, you're having a panic attack, a memory, a phobia, “Check your feet” is a reminder to look down at your feet in order to breathe. Because by looking at your feet, welcome in the presence of awareness that you are not in that place. You're a survivor. And, you survived that experience for a reason. It also discusses  how those impacts affect a child psychologically, physically, and symptomatically. There are psychological, health, and genetic impacts on an adult who has these brain changes.  This episode then discusses why if you have experienced brain changes from adverse childhood circumstances, based on emergent research, you're not alone, there is hope, you can still heal, and you can still live a happy, productive life. Your Daily Routine that Resonates with You

Legendary Leaders: Making Legendary Leaders

Today we are talking about not just a morning routine, but our personal daily routine. What daily routine do you execute that carries your energy throughout the day and is a routine that is yours, meaning it resonates with you and you enjoy it? The point to all of this is that we can't follow fads, we can't do what we should do we must do what truly moves us, energizes us, and takes us to the next level. Once we figure that out, we need to find ways throughout the day to keep us in that state so we can deliver all day, not just for 3 hours in the morning. As for me, my routine is to wake up and drink 16 oz of water. Then 30 minutes later I drink 16 oz of celery juice, if you have no idea what I am talking about with the celery juice, go check out Anthony William and learn about the benefits of celery juice. Then, I go do a little Kinrgy each morning, a shout out to the Kinrgy crew who gets me moving each day! I then go onto my rebounder, my little indoor trampoline, and I do 25 minutes of incantations. Yep, I get my mind right and I continue to anchor in who I am! After that it's getting dressed and then doing 15 minutes of priming--a combination of breathing, meditation, gratitude, visualizations, etc. This is a Tony Robbins thing so YouTube the priming video and check it out if you need this in your life, and I would say we all do. That's my morning. But it doesn't stop there. Throughout the day I have alarm reminders on my phone to remind me to do breathing exercises, I do Egoscue movements, I stand up and move around, I mediate at night with Master CO, and I do some tapping before I go to bed, check out Tapping Solutions by Nick Ortner if you want to learn more about that. See, I don't just do something in the morning and then I'm done. I START in the morning and that morning routine is the launchpad for my entire day. And I can tell you, when it was the day after Christmas and I traveled to see family and I DIDN'T do my routine that day, ugh. I felt a difference! As you can see, I'm not exercising or doing a routine because it sounds good. I'm not following the hottest. new exercise routine. I'm doing what I do because it's what is right for me! So here's what I want you to think about, are you doing a routine because you are “supposed to” or have you found a routine that truly energizes you, lifts you up, empowers you, and helps you slay the day? Because maybe, just maybe, you dread your routine or can't stick to that resolution because it really isn't “yours.” Meaning, you are trying to do what you think you are supposed to do instead of doing what you truly need to do for you. Find what works for you. Steal shamelessly from my routine if you want. Then create a daily routine, not just a morning routine. Be Legendary!
