When it comes to being a creative, a lot of people can get caught up in the “rules of art”. That’s why I knew I had to bring on Kristy Rice, an entrepreneur and stationery designer who lives by the mantra of "forget rules, forget right, remember joy”. No matter where you are in your creative journey I think this is something we all need to learn or relearn and that’s what we talked about in this episode. Kristy and I also get into how she started her business, her experience of bringing on her first employees and how she creates a sense of order in her day to day life. She talks about why she likes entrepreneurship and the freedom that comes along with it plus how she manages her work while only being in the studio part-time every single week!  (This episode was pre-recorded on Feb 27, 2020)   What’s in this episode: How balance and flexibility helps Kristy craft a life she loves How Kristy transitioned from art as a hobby to a career Figuring everything out on her own as she grew her business Kristy’s experience of learning how to delegate in her business Her first hires in her business How Kristy stays motivated and creatively inspired What Kristy’s day looks like and how she creates a sense of order How to forget about the “rules of art”  Their thoughts on happiness vs. joy Kristy’s experience of working with celebrity clients   About Kristy: Kristy Rice wears many hats: entrepreneur, mama, celebrity invitation designer, stylist…but her first love is watercolor. Kristy Rice began her art career humbly, while hiding under the covers with a flashlight as a 6 year old girl who just wanted to make art, literally day and night. It was clear from the start, Kristy would make her mark on the world with a paintbrush. As a modern watercolor painter whose style and instructional approach has become sought after worldwide, Kristy continues to inspire her community with a growing collection of instructional videos and books (Schiffer Publishing). Her spirited, "forget rules, forget right, remember joy" mantra has brought thousands to enjoy painting watercolor who never believed they could. Howdy! This is Mathew Boudreaux (AKA Mister Domestic), presently residing in the Pacific Northwest with my husband, our 7-year-old daughter Helena, and two cats Jordan & Camden. I am originally from Houston, TX and have managed to live all over the country during my adult life, but finally settled down and call Camas, Washington home. During the day, I work in the pharmaceutical industry specializing in oncology, but am an artist by heart and have jokingly referred to myself as an artistic gypsy flowing from theater to modeling to photography to sewing. I had learned to sew as a kid, but never really got into it until we had our daughter. I thought it would be a great way to connect with her if I could make her cool clothes. At almost 40, I felt that my taste-level had arrived and that I could make some pretty neat-o digs, if only I could figure out how to do it. Before Helena could even crawl, my husband bought me a couple sewing classes at Modern Domestic in Portland, which was the perfect jumpstart that I needed because I haven’t stopped since. You can replace 'fulfilled' with lots of words, like happy, confident, even yourself. Growing through those feelings, towards finding yourself again is really at the heart of About Progress. Today's interview provides another meaningful look at the situation many of us (myself included) find ourselves in; tune in and know you can grow into who you were meant to become. Amy Tangerine is the creative behind her lifestyle brand, which includes a book, podcast, and workshops. But, of course, it isn't all just bright colors and confetti. Her story of running a million-dollar-business around the time of the 2008 economy crash, and how she found her way back to her creative self, shows the real grit to her growth. Amy believes in infusing creativity into the everyday, while really nourishing yourself and giving pause where needed. In this episode she even gives you a "permission slip" that you mentally sign, so that you can get started towards who you were always meant to become. And if getting started is really where you're stuck, we spend a lot of time on that, too. If you have to ask yourself "Who's life am I even living?" then this episode is realllly for you. Jelena Aleksich is the creator of the Confetti Project, a photography project that douses amazing humans in confetti while asking, “what do you celebrate in your life right now?” She is driven by connection and makes it a point to explore what each subject celebrates. The Confetti Project was started as a photography series but has also transformed the lives of so many people with its therapeutic process that helps people let go and play. Over the past 4 years of working on this project, she’s learned that we all celebrate the same things and that all of life’s moments are deserving of celebrations. After dealing with her own devastating loss, she hopes to remind people that you can find purpose in pain and beauty in grief and I am so excited for you to hear the wisdom she shares in today’s episode.    What’s in this episode: How Jelena got into the creative space and what inspired her to start the Confetti Project How the project helps people to stop and check-in with themselves Her advice for people facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles  Using passion as your prerequisite to keep pushing yourself The power in co-creating with the people and the joy gets from creating moments in time  The rush of emotions that come with looking at the Confetti Project photos Navigating skepticism within her work and keeping energy sacred The transformation that happens when people throw confetti and drop into the moment How to stay positive when your facing hardships Realizing that there’s a silver lining in everything Extracting the beauty in every moment and using her grief from the loss of her dad to keep her grounded Measuring your life by the impact you made on others rather than successes What Jelena’s book, Cancer and Confetti, is about and how her experience led her to write it Being grateful for our circumstances in life  How much of a ripple effect a creative pursuit can have on the world What Jelena does when she’s feeling uninspired  Being guided by her intuition and redefining your life to do what you dream of   About Jelena: Hi! I'm a graphic designer and photographer that douses amazing humans with confetti, exploring what they celebrate in their lives. As a creative entrepreneur with a background in Psychology and Design, I'm always trying to create powerful visual storytelling, which is how The Confetti Project was born. Not only was this project the first thing I ever finished, but it's changed my life in being able to tap into daily gratitude even amidst grieving the loss of a beloved parent. Now, my goal is to deeply connect with as many humans as possible, giving them space to fully let go of everything and be comfortable being vulnerable. My few loves: coffee table books, 20-second hugs and doing one thing a day that scares me.   Connect with Jelena: Confetti Project | Instagram | Facebook   Links: Craftcation Conference When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi & Abraham Verghese  The Alice Network by Katie Quinn Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr MODERN LOSS: Candid Conversation About Grief. Life as a creator comes with its own set of challenges. Today I am chatting with my friend, Adele Toomey about all things scrapbooking and life as a YouTuber. We dive into how she got hooked on all things creative and how she manages her day to day as a wife, mom, creative and YouTuber (did I mention she runs not one, not two, but three different YouTube channels?). We chat about why she decided to create three different channels for her subscribers and how to figure out what content your viewers like best as a creator. She discusses what challenges she faces as a YouTuber including what she does when she hits a creative rut and how she overcomes mom guilt.    What’s in this episode: What Adele did before she discovered scrapbooking How Amy and Adele met How she got hooked on all things creativity Keeping up with scrapbooking and bulking her work A typical day in Adele’s life as a creator, YouTuber and mom Why Adele has three separate YouTube channels and how to figure out what your viewers like the best How Adele stays inspired when she hits a creative block by looking at her supplies in a new way The rollercoaster of feeling like you have too many ideas with not enough time vs. not enough ideas and hitting a creative rut How her background as a teacher has helped her with her work Dealing with mom guilt and how this affects your creative work Adjustments that Adele will make to make her creative process flow easier How to handle negative feedback on YouTube Why Adele recommends having free content to go along with your paid content   About Adele: My name is Adele and I am a paper-holic. Yes, it may have taken years for me to admit it…but alas it is true. I am a primary school teacher by day (fourth year on Kindergarten this year) and often use the excuse “Oh, but I need it for work!” to justify my paper purchases. My husband has learned to “smile and nod” at my excitement over paper quality and adhesive possibilities… I have been recording memories using art journals for many years but have embraced Project Life style scrapbooking for the last 2 years. I scrap weekly and use multiple inserts for each week due to the large amount of photos I take. I am almost finished my fourth PL volume for 2014 alone…eeek! I love recording the simple moments in life, as well as the fun social times. As PL is my only means of photo-keeping, I tend to include as many important moments as possible through photos to remember life in years to come. I am an embellishing queen and cannot deem a layout complete without an embellishment cluster…or two…or three! I am also hoping to create an epic pocketed scrapbook style wedding album in the next few months. If you feel like your life is weighed down by stress, then you will want to hear this episode.    Today on the podcast, I am joined by Stephanie Smokovich, the founder of Bella BLVD, a scrapbooking company specializing in beautifully designed patterned papers and stickers.    In January 2018, Stephanie was confronted with a brain cancer diagnosis. From this diagnosis, she was faced with the difficult task of reducing stress and work in her life. It was then that she made the difficult decision to let go of the business side of Bella BLVD to focus on the art and design portion she initially fell in love with. Stephanie partnered her business with Doodlebug and continues to work as the Creative Director.    We discuss how her brain tumor changed her mindset and perspective on life, how she fills her life with color, and how she came up with the idea for her event, She Loves Color. We also chat about transitioning to working less, how to reduce stress in your life and the mantra that Stephanie lives by.    What’s in this episode: What is going on right now in Stephanie’s life Discovering she had a brain tumor How that diagnosis has changed her perspective and mindset Filling her life with color  What kind of scrapbooking Stephanie enjoys to do What inspired Stephanie to start scrapbooking How She Loves Color came about Creating an environment where women could support each other Showcasing other women in the creative industry How Stephanie crafts a life that she loves Transitioning to working from home and working less What Stephanie recommends to help people reduce stress The process of partnering with Doodlebug The mantra that Stephanie lives by   From Stephanie: The truth about me is that I have loved scrapbooking since the very first day I walked into a local store; I met the owner, and was hired the same day! Attending fine arts classes during the day, and teaching scrapbooking workshops at night became part of my daily college routine. After earning an expensive Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design I moved out of state to follow my love for art and design. After two years I returned home to Wisconsin with bigger dreams: Shortly thereafter, Bella Blvd was born (2008).   Fast forward to January of 2018: Life certainly changed for me when the doctors informed me that I have brain cancer-needless to say, it put a whole lot of things into perspective. The doctors recommend working much less and reducing stress in my life. While Bella Blvd brings me so much joy, it also comes with it's fair amount of stress. Therefore, I made a tough decision to choose life and to let go of all the business side of Bella Blvd. As of January 2019 Doodlebug will be maintaining all of the company's day-to-day operations. I will continue to be involved on the art and design levels and am so thankful to have found Cynthea and her team to partner with!   After attending the Inspired Retreat in Nashville in May of 2016, the She Loves Color Event was born. The mission is to inspire, connect and customize. We aim with the event to support each other and allow color to energize us. We've designed the event to allow women to do what they love, meet new friends and offer a manufacture focused event. As the owner of Bella Blvd it's important to me the we not only recognize the Educators, but also the companies that are behind the faces.    Connect with Stephanie: Instagram | Bella BLVD Instagram | She Loves Color Instagram | Bella BLVD Website   Links: She Loves Color 2019: During online registration in the “other girlfriends in my group” section, mention me: Amy Tangerine and let them know I sent you! We also talk about her favorite mediums, how she connects with her audience and how she decides which partnerships and collaborations to say yes to. ON TODAY’S EPISODE: Why Amy enjoys Instagram as a medium Her perspective on vlogging How she keeps her YouTube channel authentic   The importance of separating self-worth from “likes” What Amy did to monetize her Instagram organically How she learned to negotiate contracts Amy’s three criteria for collaboration Legal advice for freelancers and influencers How writing a book helped Amy heal and deal in difficult times A sneak peek at what Amy’s got going on in 2019   KEY TAKE-AWAYS:   “My parents always instilled this value of you can do anything you put your mind to and your heart in, they really had this vision that the American dream was to work for yourself.” - Amy Tan   “I had all these ideas for side hustles, without knowing that that's what they were. I magically somehow ended up turning a lot of hobbies into work. ” - Amy Tan   “It’s so valuable to try different things and you don't actually have to go all in on something. You can dabble.” - Amy Tan   “There's so many things that you can learn and I just think that experimentation is the best way to do so.” - Amy Tan   “I really wanted people to get a feel of what it was like as a small business owner, as a creative entrepreneur who sits in a studio working and have that dialogue and that feeling that you're right alongside me in the studio creating, and on the adventures that I take.” - Amy Tan   “I feel like it's still me being on Instagram. I'm still authentic, I'm still real. I'm still the same person. Even though the content that I share might vary to a certain degree, I just love being able to do that in such a fun format.”  - Amy Tan   “I experimented with different types of videos. Sometimes I would do a tutorial, sometimes I would talk straight to camera, sometimes it would be short, sometimes it'd be longer. I played around and I took the pressure off of myself for making things perfect.” - Amy Tan   “You're trying to be true to yourself and you're not trying to create an image just to appease people.” - Katie Hunt   “Sometimes I actually don't want to post that many pretty things because I don't want people thinking that all I'm focusing on is the pretty aspects and nothing bad is happening in my life. That is so untrue.” - Amy Tan   “Show the type of work you want to be doing and then that'll ultimately attract the same type of people that are interested in it.” - Katie Hunt   “I do love helping people and working with people. But at the same time, I realize that my time is really limited and I can't be spread too thin because I've been there before.” - Amy Tan   “Why are you starting this business to begin with? Who do you want to serve and how you want to make an impact in their lives? Because if you don't have a reason for starting this business, then it's not truly a business, if you're not solving problems.” - Katie Hunt   “I don't have a rate sheet. I don't believe in her rate card. I believe everything is a conversation.” - Amy Tan   “I don't know if you know this, but you can't really tell an entrepreneur what to do.” - Amy Tan CONNECT WITH EMILY MARKS: Website: http://amytangerine.com/ YouTube: http://youtube.com/amytangerine Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amytangerine/   JOIN US FOR PROOF TO PRODUCT’S 100th EPISODE! A Coffee-Caffeinated Kick Whether you drink it black, with cream, or with cream and 13 Stevias, coffee is a magical elixir that fuels our creative grind. It puts a pep in our step when we start our mornings. It provides that spark when you hit that 2 PM wall. Most importantly, it creates community amongst creators and provides an instant connection. Today, we're going to finish the year strong—as strong as my black coffee—with a 3-part Coffee Caffeinated Kick series. I want this series to function like audio coffee—to give you an extra boost in the AM or PM when you sip your coffee and get after it. Whether you buy your beans ground or grind your own, part one of this series is titled Good Things Happen to Those Who Grind. If you struggle with the lack of time, money, and motivation then this one is for you. Enjoy This Episode? I have permission each and every day to pursue my craft in order to take love and care of myself and be my best self for the most important people in my life. – Amy Tangerine On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m so, so excited to talk with Amy Tangerine, who runs a creative company that helps women believe that they are creative and that you can craft a life you love by infusing creativity, fun and intention into your every day. We talk about the joy of making, which can be about the product, but is often about the process or the time you spent making. Amy talks about being really present in the moment when she is crafting. As moms we can tap into our own creativity, but we can also nurture creativity in our kids. Amy talks about her mom starting her onto the idea that she could create things and people would buy them. But we also talk about how the plan to sell can detract from enjoying the process of creating. We talk about: The value of being able to achieve your dreams no matter how big they are Modeling creating for our kids and the pros and cons of craft kits The power of paper planners and finding the way to plan that works for you Everyone having 10 minutes a day to do something creative—and that there is creativity in everything we do if we recognize it Giving ourselves permission to be creative, including the permission slip Amy shares in her book Enjoying where you are and remembering that everything is a phase How much a handwritten note can brighten somebody’s day BIO Amy is the Founder of Amy Tangerine, a creative lifestyle company that creates online content as well as fun, tangible products like tee shirts and craft supplies. Amy wrote the book, Craft a Life You Love, has taught workshops all over the world, makes YouTube videos, and consults with awesome brands and clients. Amy's mission is to inspire women everywhere to feel joy and confidence by infusing creativity, fun and intention into the everyday. LINKS Amytangerine.com Amy’s Instagram Amy’s blog Amy’s YouTube channel Amy’s scrapbooking class Amy’s book Craft a Life You Love Advent Calendar that you can make for your family Doable Changes from this episode: MAKE 10 MINUTES FOR CREATIVITY. Amy says that everybody can find 10 minutes a day to be creative. Can you take 10 minutes before your kids get up or during lunch or after your kids are in bed? Know what you would like to do with that time—doodling, journaling, scrapbook a page … whatever it is take 10 minutes every day. GIVE PERMISSIONS. In her book, Amy has a permission slip for creativity, because you need to nourish your soul first. Give yourself permission: The most important of my day is the part where I take care of myself and feed my soul. I cannot be the best partner, the best employee, the best boss, the best parent or the best friend if I’m not at my best. Therefore, I have permission each and every day to pursue my craft in order to take love and care of myself and be my best self for the most important people in my life. Sign it, and live it. WRITE A HANDWRITTEN NOTE. A handwritten note can brighten somebody’s day more than you know. Take a few minutes to write a note to your child, partner, or friend. Or write one to a client or coach or mentor. Don’t worry about perfection, just write from the heart and hand letter it.

Ladies, it's time we put a stop to the mean girl culture in schools, in life and at work. There is enough love, joy, success and friendship for all of us. We don't need to backstab and pit our friends against each other. This has been on my mind, so I wanted to do a podcast about back to school, queen bees, and what we can do as parents and coaches and leaders to help girls stand up to the mean girls. Where do the mean girls get their power? Why don't the other girls in that crowd stand up to the Queen Bee? And, how can we get our girls to do the right thing? I don't have all the answers. I opened up my computer and started recording as I got a bit wound up on this topic. I would love it if you would take a listen and share your own thoughts related to the problem and potential solutions. As I drove to school today, I watched a driver stop so that a girl could cross the street. Traffic was backed up in all directions, everyone focused on getting into the parking lot and onto their next task. That driver stopped. And it broke me out of my rush hour trance. I realized I should stop too so that poor girl could cross the street. All it took was one person to get my attention, to make me focus on doing what was right. Wouldn't it be great if we taught our girls how to pay attention and be that one person who spoke up and did what was right in social situations? I have to believe that if more people had the courage to speak up, the queen bees would lose their power. The mean girls behave the way they do because they are confident that no one will rock the boat. In this podcast, I also read a brief excerpt from Kara Goucher's new book, Strong: A Runner's Guide to Boosting Confidence and Becoming the Best Version of You. I highly recommend the book for athletes, girl moms, teens, and women of all ages. You don't have to be a runner to benefit from this book. Kara teaches some solid strategies for building confidence and visualizing success, and breaking through mental barriers.  I also read a story from Craft a Life You Love: Infusing Creativity, Fun and Intention into Your Everyday by Amy Tangerine. This book is geared to people with creative hobbies and careers, but the mindset lessons apply to everyone.  If you're catching this blog post early in the day, I don't quite have that download I promised ready. Check back soon! I'm putting together a printable mini workbook that has some ideas from the podcast, and some writing prompts that you can enter in your confidence journal! Catching Up: (0:19) Jen got a new job (new position, same company) and she's really looking forward to starting it. She did some serious spring cleaning at home. She went to Craftcation and had a great time. She even got to hang out with Kim Werker, who is an awesome crochet designer and Amy Tangerine was also there. She has been doing a lot of gigs with Ron. And she's continuing to work on Firefly sampler from Watty’s Wall Stuff. She has a lot of tiny detail work left. Laura also got a new job! This one is at a different company than where she previously worked. She has a few weeks off while she transitions and will get to spend some time with family, including helping her mother-in-law clean house for remodeling and visiting with her step-daughter and her family. She got some new lovely yarn in the mail from Annie Modesitt's yarn club and it's super pretty. In the Knitting Bag: (12:10) Jen hasn't had a lot of knitting mojo for various reasons. She worked on her blanket inspired by the Baby Yours Sweater by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee out of Cascade 220 Superwash Sport in Winter White. She finished all the knitting on her Customfit tunic top out of Cascade Heritage in Deep Plum.  Now she needs to block. Laura worked on her Yggdrasil Afghan by Lisa Jacobs out of Berroco Vintage Chunky in Mocha. She also worked on her Swirl Hat (Crochet) from Patons out of Knit Picks Gloss Fingering in black.  She worked on her Ink by Hanna Maciejewska in Dizzy Blonde Studios Superwash Sock in Applegate and she swatched for her Carson Shawl by Romi Hill out of Forbidden Woolery Pride Fingering. We thank our listeners for the good crochet swatching advice. Finished Objects: (18:36) Jen hasn't finished anything because of no mojo and no blocking space. She also seriously needs to update Ravelry. Laura has finished another preemie hat and all the crocheting on her Quinty by Bernadette Ambergen. She blocked it and wove in ends and it just needs photos. We mention Caro Sheridan's Photography Class on Craftsy. Devil's Tower: (24:46) Jen just has lots of stuff waiting on blocking and finishing. She misses her mojo. Laura had a block party and blocked Quinty, her Night Blooming Shawlette, and her Clapotis. Frog Pond: (26:07) Jen had to rip back to fix a split stitch in the sleeve cap of her tunic. She also had a sad mishap with an order from a company--just a minor mistake and the company had great customer service to fix the problem really quickly, it was just a sad disappointment to open the package and find the incorrect order. Basically, she just isn't very patient. Laura didn't have any issues, luckily. On Deck: (30:58) Jen is having trouble thinking about it because she has lost her mojo, but she wants to make some baby sweaters for various baby-having people in her life. She wants to make one sweater out of the White Birch Fiber Arts. This was inspired by Jasmin of the Knitmore Girls's sweater for her new baby. She has a lot of other stuff, including the Hitofude Cardigan. Laura wants to do a crescent or semi-circular shawl with some of her lovely new gradient yarns. Other than that, she has the same list as previously detailed in other episodes ( Knit Culture: (34:06) We review A Head for Trouble: What To Knit While Catching Crooks, Chasing Clues, and Solving Murders by Julie Turjoman from Passiflora Press. The book retails for 19.95 for a Ravelry download and starting at 20.03 for the hard copy book on Amazon (regular price $26.95). We both LOVE this book. The styling, photography, and patterns are all gorgeous. We love the details on all the patterns and can't wait to make them. The patterns are inspired by the 20's but not costumey. There are patterns for 10 hats and each hat has a matching accessory. Also each hat/accessory combination is inspired by a fictional woman detective and each hat has a paragraph describing the character who inspired it. We like it just as much as the designer's other book, Knits That Breathe. And we are really excited about the fact that this one is called "Volume I" and can't wait for "Volume II". Geek Culture: (45:37) We talk about Con Man, a new project from Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion and also the return of the X-Files (and Twin Peaks and Full House--so it's apparently the 90's again). Also Hot Topic and Torrid have an Orphan Black collection. Events: (50:51) Vogue Knitting Live, April 17-19 at the Pasadena Convention Center. Laura is taking Amy Herzog’s class. Camp CogKNITive is August 21-23, Camarillo, CA. It's a great and relaxing weekend. Knit Dizzney will Sunday, September 13th, 2015. There will be T-shirts, project bags, and exclusive yarn available for pre-order. The meetup will be at 2pm at the Hearthstone Lounge in the Grand Californian. Yarnopshere is October 17-18 EXPO Art Center in Bixby Knolls, Long Beach. Laura is vending.
