Taylor Verbeck is the President and CEO of Social Sampling, a company that utilizes the force of social media and influencers to engage consumers before shopping and up to the moment of purchase. She started her career at the age of 14 after an in-store event put on by a national marketing company. After high school, she was promoted to Regional Manager at Mass Connections, managing over 5,000 events a month at stores like Walmart and Target. In 2011, Taylor partnered with her mother to start Social Sampling, adding an innovative social media approach to the world of in-store demos. Keeping it in the family, she added her husband, Brandon, to the team and has continued growing the business. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: How Taylor Verbeck's business was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and how Social Sampling pivoted How Taylor found her first contact list when she started Social Sampling Taylor talks about her background, the future of demoing, and her primary customers Social Sampling's expansion strategies and how the company targets different audiences How sampling boxes work and some of the manufacturers the company works with Taylor talks about some of the products she has sent out and how she works with small brands How Taylor's husband joined Social Sampling and her future social media plans for the company How manufacturers receive feedback about the results of their product's demos Taylor's advice to fellow entrepreneurs on growing a business In this episode… Handling demos during the COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be a big challenge for many CPG brands. One of the obstacles has been the restrictions put in place. With regulations limiting in-store demoing due to physical distancing, how can you get your product in your audience's hands — and out the door? The team at Social Sampling came up with a great idea for demos: do them at home. Instead of having consumers come to an in-person event, Social Sampling sends sample boxes to consumers for testing. Then, consumers are able to sample products at their own leisure, from their own homes. This has since helped many emerging brands get feedback from users about their products. Plus, it's helped them make better business decisions. Taylor Verbeck, the President and CEO of Social Sampling, is Steve Cleere's guest in this episode of the NexxtLevel Brands Podcast, where she talks about building a product sampling business serving CPG brands. Taylor explains how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted her work and how she had to pivot to thrive during the crisis. Stay tuned. “I’m not gonna get a scholarship but I’m gonna go in there and I’m gonna try!” Try Drumeo Edge for free for 7 days Taylor Gordon, AKA The Pocket Queen, originally from New Orleans is a drummer and producer who has been through some big ups and some big downs. We are mostly all aware that in order to succeed, you must also fail. Taylor embodies this statement very well. You will hear about her story from the time that she was accepted with a Presidential scholarship to Berklee, her mishap with a harddrive, her spontaneous encounter with someone important in a fast food restaurant, and how she took it upon herself to begin creating her own music. Which you can listen to right here. This is a nice reminder that we will all experience ebbs and flows within our lives and they become more drastic in either direction when we take more risk. You Will Hear About…. Taylor gets into Berklee. Her mom said no to Berklee but also wanted Taylor to challenge this instruction. How Taylor’s family success influenced her own. A publishing deal that she got. The upsets along the way and what she did about it. Why Taylor decided to begin making her own music. Why Should You Listen? A lot can be learned from a good story. Taylor’s story outlines what can go right but what can also go wrong. I think there are many people who truly fear taking matters into their own hands and being true individuals. Whether the fear is born from our sets of beliefs within ourselves, the unknown territory, or what will happen to us along the way. It can be very intimidating to branch out from what feels safe but many people still likely want to feel the rewards of taking action and pursuing dreams. This episode can provide some reassurance that living our lives the way we want to is more than worth it. Taylor’s Linktree Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’ Instagram Facebook YouTube

About this episode Taylor Toynes is the co-founder and executive director of For Oak Cliff, a community-based nonprofit that seeks to liberate the Oak Cliff community from systemic oppression. Oak Cliff is a community within the city of Dallas that boasts one of the highest crime rates in the area. In fact, the zip code for For Oak Cliff leads the state of Texas with the most people in prison. It has a median household income of just $21,000 a year. As a resident population where 40% of those over the age of 25 don't even have a GED, the same zip code had an entire population of high school students walk out of school due to the poor conditions of the school. And in fact, the middle school that feeds that same high school was shut down due to poor air quality. The mission of For Oak Cliff is personal to Taylor because Oak Cliff is where he grew up and where he calls home today. But more importantly, it's personal because he believes the residents of Oak Cliff have potential far greater than is being realized. His mission is grand, but his passion is even greater. In this episode, you'll hear. Taylor's early days and how being surrounded by entrepreneurs encouraged him to start his own nonprofit. The life lessons Taylor learned from his family on what it means to serve others. The four pillars For Oak Cliff uses to help liberate Oak Cliff from systemic oppression. How Taylor measures success. Changes he has seen in the community in the last five years. Taylor's greatest challenges. His advice to any entrepreneur who is not seeing success. In this episode, he interviews Taylor Lumpp, our Head of Operations and one of our original coaches. She’s a 64 kg Olympic weightlifter, a multi-time national medalist, and she even won the Arnold Classic this year. Professionally, Taylor was an FBI agent for 4 years, starting at age 19 (you won’t want to miss hearing about this part of her story!). In this episode, we learn about: How Taylor found WAG and why she wanted to join What WAG was like in those early days (and how things have changed) What it was like being coached by (and developing a friendship with) Adee How her relationship with food has evolved and improved What she’s learned after working with hundreds (possibly thousands!) of clients Taylor believes that a person’s success on a nutrition plan can be attributed, in large part, to the degree of suffering they’re experiencing. Making money is easy, according to our guest today, Taylor Welch, co-founder of Traffic and Funnels, but knowing how to invest and multiply wealth is the hard part. This is why he has made it his mission to arm people with the skills they need to grow their money and minds beyond self-imposed limits. We kick off this episode by learning more about Traffic and Funnels and how they help clients build online digital marketing systems and show high-level consultants, coaches and experts how to develop lead generation machines to scale businesses to seven figures a year. Music Lovers rejoice. This weekend you can be part of a virtual music festival with over 65 artists of different genres! How? Taylor gives you all the information you need here...
We watched Taylor Swift's documentary on the weekend and we knew we had to talk about Miss Americana on the Get Merry podcast. We always loved her music. We always loved her. But NOW... oh wow, the love for Taylor Swift is so big!Stuff we talk about…The constant goal of being 'a good girl' and 'doing what is right'. We can relate to this in so many ways! We talk about Joseph Campbell's quote (hehehe love you Dad)..."Don't do what Daddy says, because Daddy has one interest and that's your security. And if you bargain away your life for security now, you will never find your bliss".The pressures of beauty standards in the public eye, starvation, eating disorders. How Taylor being a healthy weight is so beneficial for all of her fans. She said..."There's always some standard of beauty that you're not meeting. Because if you're thin enough, then you don't have that ass that everybody wants. But if you have enough weight on you to have an ass then your stomach isn't flat enough. It's all just fucking impossible."The dangers of relying on external validation as the guiding light for success and love.Taylor's work ethic... amazing. Her perspective on being a woman in the spotlight at age 30..."This is probably one of my last opportunities as an artist to grasp onto that kind of success. So, I don't know, as I'm reaching thirty, I'm like, I want to work really hard while society is still tolerating me being successful."How she became vocal during the 2018 mid-term elections, she wanted to be on 'the right side of history'. We've experienced this fear of expressing our opinions, from fear of judgment, feeling not smart enough, fear of people not liking us.If you watch the doco, let us know what you think! We'd love to hear from you. ALSO! MerryBody is officially open and you can join just in time to participate in the 21 day Yoga and Pilates Challenge!Check out all the Get Merry Podcast episodes on iTunes and Overcast and Stitcher for Androids. When you work a traditional 9-to-5, working from home (for yourself) can feel like a real treat. You sit in a comfortable chair of your choosing, you can blast music as loud as you want, and pants are optional. But anyone who works remotely full-time or runs their biz from their home office knows: it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Much of the time, you’re fighting distractions that are pulling you away from your work. Thankfully, Focusmate can help you… well, focus. We talked about productivity and human habit with Focusmate’s creator, Taylor Jacobson, on this week’s episode of Wealth by Design. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN [01:46] Who Taylor is and how he created Focusmate [05:05] How Focusmate uses virtual coworking to help you get work done [07:48] The versatility of Focusmate (it’s not just for paperwork!) [09:00] How Focusmate creates a distraction-free environment [10:44] Why we still need accountability in the digital age [13:18] Using behavioral triggers to get into a “flow state” [15:23] The three things you need to do to focus [16:47] The toughest part of running your own (online) business [19:07] How changing up your scenery makes a difference, too [21:10] The ways that community input advise Focusmate’s growth [24:24] Why the traditional workplace needs to evolve [27:36] How Taylor’s life would change in “revivement” [28:47] The non-sexy big thing that Focusmate is working on right now HOW FOCUSMATE BOOSTS YOUR PRODUCTIVITY Procrastination is a drag. Avoiding something may feel good in the moment, but it just creates even more stress in the long run. But even though we know that procrastination is “bad” and productivity is “good,” that doesn’t make it any easier to actually get our work done. Especially when you’re your own boss. Focusmate works because you have an accountability buddy to keep you in check. Here’s how it works: You choose a time you want to work on Focusmate. Morning, afternoon, evening, it’s your call. You get a 50-minute session with your Focusmate partner, which starts with each of you sharing your goal for that chunk of time. You get to work and achieve that goal. When you join a Focusmate session, you’re paired with a random coworker — and they come from all over the world! But you can set up private groups if you find that you’ve matched up with some really great people in the past. Taylor mentioned that one of Focusmate’s goals in the future is to allow users the option to choose their favorite partners to work with individually. After hearing Taylor explain how Focusmate works, we assumed that its magic worked best on traditional office tasks. Emails, reports, budgets, that sort of thing. However, Taylor pointed out that Focusmate isn’t limited to work. You can use it for other things on your to-do list, like self-care practices, workouts, or meditation. Focusmate is incredibly versatile. Fun, right?! THANK YOU, SCIENCE: BEHAVIORAL TRIGGERS How does the methodology behind Focusmate work? Dustin mentioned that he geeked out over “The Science Behind Focusmate” page (linked in the show notes below!). What does it all boil down to? Understanding the psychology behind our actions and using that to your advantage by adapting your behavior and responses to triggers. Let’s say you set a goal for yourself at work: you want to spend two hours a week researching what your competition is doing on their website and social media channels. You know that this research will help you discover any current trends you might have missed, and it may even affect your own social media strategy. However… you fail to stick to this goal. Other tasks get in the way. (Or, more likely, you just get lost down an IG rabbit hole #guilty.) Before you know it, the workweek is over and you’ve pushed that task to the next week. And the next. Repeat. One reason this might happen? You’re setting yourself a vague, generic task to get something done at some point… you know, whenever. It’s different with Focusmate and accountability practices in general. You have a specific commitment to another person, not just yourself. It’s a lot harder to break that commitment. That’s one of the many ways Focusmate works: by anticipating your behavioral triggers and providing solutions for it ahead of time. Taylor even shared that some Focusmate users said that they were productive long after their coworking sessions even ended! Their mental state was so deeply ingrained in work mode that they tackled other stuff they had to do, even if they technically were “off the clock” at that point. We think that’s pretty cool. THE HURDLES OF RUNNING A BUSINESS (ONLINE OR NOT) Whether it’s fully remote or in-person, running any business is tough. However, choosing what to focus your energy on in your business is one of the hardest things entrepreneurs face. And it’s a constant battle prioritizing your tasks, especially in the beginning stages. You already started your own business, which means you brought a fantastic idea to life. That’s not the last great idea you’ll have and wanting to explore other ideas can be tempting. Taylor explained that choosing which business ideas to pursue is something he struggles with most. It really can be too much of a good thing. If you focus your attention on too many projects at once, you lose out on efficiency. And those ideas you picked won’t really reach their full potential if your concentration is scattered. Sometimes you have to learn to say no, even to yourself. (Plus, as you know, we’re not big fans of multiple businesses). This is just a taste of what we chatted about with Taylor this week. Make sure to check out the full episode for more about Focusmate, how it works, and what to expect from Taylor and his crew in the coming months! A WIND-POWERED HOSPITAL? YEAH…RIGHT Taylor Clark, a frequent guest on IoT Playbook podcast, has done more smart city and smart building projects than anyone I know. But when Taylor sent me an email saying that he got an Atlanta hospital completely off the electric grid and powered by wind, I was still skeptical. “A wind-powered hospital? That’s impossible,” I thought. But after we recorded this episode, I was a believer. His solution really works and you’ve got to see it to believe it. In this episode of IoT Playbook, Taylor shows everything; the business model, the pricing, and a behind-the-scenes look at this cutting edge smart building technology. Head on over to podcast.iotplaybook.com and check out this amazing episode. I guarantee it will blow you away. What You Will Learn: How Taylor pitched his smart building technology to a hospital How wind power technology works Who Taylor made touchpoints with throughout the sales cycle The cost-savings of Taylor’s wind power IoT solution How Taylor’s technology is implemented and maintained The business model, pricing, and cutting-edge technology Taylor is selling podcast.IoTplaybook.com/podcasts/smart-building-technology-taylor-clark-1-part-3/ Wind-Powered Hospital – Innovative Smart Building Technology It is critical for hospitals to stay on the cutting edge of technology so they can provide the highest level of service; smart building technology plays a major role. Taylor Clark just wrapped up a project that will take a hospital entirely off-grid using wind power alone. He joins IoT Playbook again to talk about his latest project in-depth and continue the conversation about IoTMSP solutions and smart building technology. Taylor explains the business model, the pricing, and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at this cutting edge technology. Significant Cost Savings Initially, the hospital reached out to Taylor for information about solar power because they were planning to retrofit their facilities with smart building technology. The project would require substantially more power, so Taylor steered them toward wind power, which would cost ⅓ of the price. Once he reached the right decision-makers, Taylor walked them through the smart building technology, implementation, and the cost savings showing a complete ROI in approximately five years. The average savings for the following twenty-five years would be roughly $25M, so it was a compelling pitch at the very least. Broaden the Playing Field This type of smart building technology enables you to monitor the energy and functionality of every component, so maintenance is extremely minimal. There is a six-month lead time before the new wind wall is up and running, and the whole project is carried out with an as-a-service model. Based on the smart building technology design, mid-high rise buildings are ideal candidates because there is significantly more wind to maximize the power output, but anyone who is looking to go green is a prospect if you approach it with the right strategy. SMART BUILDINGS; SMART INVESTMENTS If you’ve been listening to the news in the US, you’ve heard about the Green New Deal, a multi-trillion-dollar plan to redo the energy infrastructure of the US. Part of that plan calls for upgrading every business building in the US to be more energy efficient. In this episode of IoT Playbook, I interview Taylor Clark, who explains how he is already saving building owners an average of 40% of their energy costs using Smart Building technologies and smart MSP IT strategies. Taylor Clark is the founder of Alternegy, an enterprise-level IoT managed service company that architects and manages enterprise-class IoT projects for cities, building owners, enterprise customers, agribusiness, and more. In this episode, Taylor reveals the two key drivers for smart building success and how you can jump into the Smart Building opportunity, one of the fastest-growing MSP IT opportunities in IoT managed services today. Taylor reveals his clever method for winning business away from the biggest players in the industry – stealing business from companies 100x his size. So, just head on over to podcast.iotplaybook.com and search for Episode 9, where I’ll show you the actual Playbooks that IoT managed service providers are using to make 7-figures or more of recurring revenue right now. What You Will Learn: The challenges and processes associated with selling smart building MSP IT solutions How to prospect large commercial buildings and who is involved How Taylor is using AI in agribusiness and cannabusiness How to identify the types of buildings that are ideal opportunities Why event recognition is gaining traction in the smart building space The importance of partnerships for pricing and packaging Why IT people have a major advantage in smart building solutions https://podcast.iotplaybook.com/podcasts/msp-it-taylor-clark-1-part-2/ Smart Buildings & Smart MSP IT When it comes to smart buildings and MSP IT solutions, lighting is still Taylor Clark’s bread and butter. However, he also offers an AI IoT platform that uses cameras for face and event recognition. Taylor brings a different solution to the table based on individual clients’ needs. But with smart buildings, prospecting can be a grueling process. Typically, you have to drag your value proposition up the ladder, starting with the building’s facilities manager, then the property manager, and eventually, the portfolio manager. Difficult it may be, a large majority of commercial buildings across the globe have not been retrofitted with a modern MSP IT solution and energy-efficient equipment. So, the reward heavily outweighs the cost of sale. There is a lot of money to be made in this space. Lighting and Event Recognition LED lighting should remain at the forefront when you are selling a smart building MSP IT solution because it is the most obvious opportunity. Once you establish a power reduction plan, you can begin to look at control systems and the technological infrastructure managing the building. This is where you embed your solution for recurring revenue. Then you can explore other opportunities such as AI. Event recognition is the first step in automatically figuring out what your MSP IT solution needs to do on a large scale. This combination has been extremely lucrative in schools, agribusiness, and cannabusiness, but there are opportunities everywhere. Partner Up Taylor Clark is not a bank, nor is he a lighting manufacturer; he is the architect of his MSP IT solution. He found a great banking partner, insurer, and equipment provider to help him navigate the complex deals in this space. Taylor also recommends finding a partner who can help you tap into the ROI of your IoT platform. Your prospects are only willing to pay for efficiencies and gains and you need to make them measurable. The person who understands the clients’ needs and how to design an MSP IT solution that meets them will see great returns. If you are coming from an IT background, you have a significant advantage there. About Taylor Clark Taylor Clark’s career spans over 25 years in Sales, Finance, and Technology. In this episode, Taylor is going to reveal the secrets behind a successful pitch. So, just head on over to podcast.iotplaybook.com, where I’ll show you the actual Playbooks that IoT managed service providers are using to make 6, 7-figures or more of recurring revenue right now. What You Will Learn: How to leverage your technical background to win IoT projects How Taylor managed the first built-from-scratch IoT smart city The key problems that smart cities solve and how solving those problems will help you win IoT business in any market The business model that will get your IoT smart city projects approved and funded without years of committee meetings The key decision-makers in a smart city project and why you NEVER want to agree to a proof-of-concept project The key financial partners you need in every big IoT project Why Taylor picked Azure as his strategic IoT platform https://podcast.iotplaybook.com/podcasts/iot-smart-city-taylor-clark-1-part-1/ IoT Smart City Platforms Taylor Clark is the CEO and owner of Alternegy, a smart city, smart development, and green energy company that builds a unique IoT platform for commercial properties and municipalities. Alternegy got its start in smart lighting, which opened a new line of business in helping companies cut electricity and utility costs. It snowballed into an opportunity to help construct a thousand-acre IoT smart city south of Atlanta, where Alternegy sourced the partners, found the technology, and researched the solutions. Taylor Clark made his entrance in municipalities and back into the commercial space where he now offers smaller IoT services in smart building. Show Value and ROI In smart cities, there are a lot of ways for an IoT platform to provide ROI, but lighting is the most prevalent utility so it is a great place to start. By addressing lighting first, Taylor and his team can reduce power consumption by 40-90%. It enables them to start building the neural brain while showing clients the value of converting. There are a lot of options based on topography, budget, and what the client is looking to accomplish, but the modular nature of Taylor’s IoT smart city platform makes it easier to generate recurring revenue. Solutions That Grow If you put the right IoT platform in place and it serves a specific purpose, you can build off of it and ingrain yourself in the client’s operation. Alternegy goes in there, meets the clients’ needs, shows the value and ROI, then explains how they can expand upon their new solution. The beauty of the IoT smart city solution is no matter what you’re using in the background, the dashboard stays the same. So, once you can show them a solution that does what they want and can grow with them, you will be locked in. MEET THE GUEST: Taylor Costello is a mom to two angels in heaven (one miscarriage and one infant loss) and one baby on the way. Her daughter Lily was born on February 25th, 2018. She and her husband learned shortly after she was born that Lily would pass away before she was six months old due to a rare genetic condition. After spending 33 days in the NICU they came home to a massive amount of chaos. After some struggle, they finally found the tools they needed to get organized. This led to Taylor realizing there were other parents like them who were struggling with managing all of their children's home nursing supplies. Thus the beginning of Lily's List. Lily passed away on July 19th 2018 and Lily's List was officially born on October 1st 2018. Despite having no background in the non-profit industry, Taylor had studied psychology, and she had a deep passion to help other families like her. Six months in, the non-profit is thriving and she couldn't be more proud to share Lily's light in a world that is often very dark. In this episode, we cover: How Taylor and her husband Joey navigated understanding the impact of Zellweger’s syndrome on their daughter’s life What it looked and felt like to transition home with a medically fragile baby after spending over a month in the NICU How Taylor rediscovered purpose and passion through starting Lily’s List after her sweet baby girl passed “Lily gave me a good life. She really solidified that I loved being a mom, so we’re really excited to have another child, but she also gave me a whole new meaning to life and it’s just amazing and I’m very thankful for that.” Where To Connect with Taylor Online: Website To Request a Box To Donate Box Supplies Email Taylor Instagram Connect with Mia Francis-Poulin! Taylor met her husband, Joey in high school and they began their marriage and her husband entered the marine core. They had no idea how a life of constant transition would actually prepare them for their adventure with raising children. Early on, Taylor and Joey suffered a miscarriage followed by months of infertility. Their decision to go public with infertility and IVF treatments was met with a lot of encouragement and solidarity from their community. Though the pregnancy was normal in nature, it was obvious as soon as Lily was born, that something was not right. Lily was born blind, she had low tone, and refused to eat, among other telling signs. With the help of an expert geneticist, they were able to quickly diagnose Lily with Zellwegers Syndrome, which meant that she only had months to live. After life in the NICU, they made the transition home to a small apartment where Lily’s parents became nurses around the clock with the support of a lot of in-home health care professionals. It was exhausting and overwhelming, but the nurses provided Taylor and Joey so much emotional and practical support to weather these five months with Lily. Losing a baby and so much purpose for each day was a lot more difficult than they ever imagined. Taylor had planned to throw herself back into work but was reminded that she had the chance to help other families who would face the same storm of caring for a child at home which led to the birth of Lily’s List. Perhaps the hardest news to hear after losing Lily was learning that Taylor and Joey’s combination of genes would most likely always result in the worst form of this disease. They opted to do IVF again in order to avoid this outcome and now are expecting another baby girl.

There s nothing better than working with a creative team of people who are the best at what they do. It brings out the best in you and enables you to reach new heights you previously only dreamed of. Imagine for a moment, what might happen if you could build a company full of those kinds of people? It s likely, the growth and innovation your team experiences would be non-stop. That s what Taylor Holiday and the team at Common Thread Collective are experiencing – and as a result, they ve grown from zero to hero in a ridiculously short period of time (3 years). You’re about to hear a revealing conversation between real friends (as opposed to colleagues, and there is a difference). You re going to hear the process of growth Taylor and his team have gone through – and are still going through – in order to be the kind of team they truly want to be, not what others expect them to be. I feel confident selling our service because worst-case, our clients break even. Common Thread Collective is dedicated to helping product sales companies drive revenue through their eCommerce websites. Their clients spend $50K to $1 million per month on marketing and advertising that generates revenue for their brands. They do it by leveraging the new media purchasing economy that operates on daily budgets. That kind of attention enables them to keep close tabs on their client s campaigns because there s always a way to stop a failing effort and do something different. But they ve added another dimension to what they do – because they care about the start-up stage entrepreneurs, who they were finding more and more difficult to serve as the company scaled. Through their new platform, YourAdMission.co they have created a membership community that equips first-stage entrepreneurs to develop the skills they need at a price they can afford. Listen to learn more. To build a creative team made up of the best in the world, the mission had to change. Taylor s company started out with a very different mission than they have today. At first, they were seeking to Be the best in the world at selling products online. But they discovered that they weren t being consistent in carrying out the mission. That realization forced the team to evaluate whether they were willing to do what the mission required – and the answer was No – from everyone on the leadership team. That began the journey of discovering a new mission that the team was truly behind, to genuinely ask themselves what they wanted for themselves. Once they discovered that mission, it made the behaviors required to attain it much easier – and nobody was left feeling guilty for not hitting a target they felt they should accomplish, but weren t fully invested in. If I m going to ask you to work for me, I have to be invested in you as well. ~ Taylor Holiday Early on, Taylor and his partners asked themselves, Why would anyone come work for our little start-up? They were located in Orange County, California so appealing, world-class companies were just outside their door. The team came to the decision that they had to care about their employees more than anyone else was willing to do. Practically, that means that the trade of salary for time wasn t enough. They had to be invested in the employee at least as much as the employee was invested in the company. They had to ask, What would it mean to help our creative team get where they want to go, personally? As a result – and because of a desire to live consistently with their mission – they spend an inordinate amount of time and budget to empower employees to accomplish their own dreams. Ironically, many of those dreams wind up revolving around Common Thread Collective. Listen to learn how it all happened and how it s playing out day to day, on this episode of Converge. When you empower your creative team to fulfill their personal dreams, you might create your own competition… What happens if you work to help a person on your team achieve their personal dreams – and those dreams turn out to be competitive to what you re doing as a company? Taylor says that prospect isn t threatening to him because his goal is to empower entrepreneurs. It doesn t matter to him if it happens because what he sets up in the process is of much greater value than the risk it creates. Taylor also sees that sort of competition as a good thing for everyone involved. It forces everyone playing the game to improve in their own skills in order to rise to the top – or else they don t stay in the game at all. You ll be encouraged by the abundant, generous attitude Taylor has about equipping his team to be their best selves, and how it s paying off. Taylor Keen is a teacher, community builder, and Native American thought leader based out of Omaha, Nebraska. His back story is as diverse as it is impressive—he’s a member of both the Omaha Tribe and the Cherokee Nation, attended Dartmouth College (BA) and Harvard University (Masters of Public Policy, MBA), and enjoyed a successful stint in corporate America before returning to Nebraska to teach entrepreneurship and management at Creighton University. His most recent undertaking is Sacred Seed, a project with the goal of preserving Native American heritage and history through collecting, growing, and spreading the seeds of corn and other traditional Native American foods. • The writer Wallace Stegner theorized that people generally fit into one of two categories—“Boomers” or “Stickers.” Boomers are “those who pillage and run” and want “to make a killing and end up on Easy Street.” Stickers are just the opposite—they are “motivated by affection, by such a love for place and its life that they want to preserve it and remain in it.” Taylor is the walking embodiment of a Sticker. Given his drive, intelligence, and education, he could’ve followed the path of the Boomer and pursued any number of careers. But a deep love of his Native American heritage and his community called him back home to teach, lead, and live a life devoted to service of others. It’s an inspiring story. • I could’ve talked to Taylor for hours and I only asked about a third of the questions I had prepared, but we still managed to dig into a wide variety of fascinating topics. We discussed the history and mission of Sacred Seed and where he sees the project going in the future. We talked about his path from the West to the Ivy League, the decisions that led him to transition from corporate America to higher education, and some very interesting Native American history. One of my favorite parts of our conversation was Taylor’s recounting the advice he received from his grandfather soon after graduating from Harvard Business School. • This was a very enlightening conversation for me, and I greatly appreciate Taylor taking the time to chat. I encourage you to visit the Sacred Seed website and watch the video—you can find links to everything we discuss in the episode notes on the webpage.
