We talk with SCCA Hall of Fame race car driver Randy Pobst. From his racing origins in a Mk1 VW Rabbit, to his 2 wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and his personal car collection – including his Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am and Flyin' Moose Volvo 740.  To start, we'll dive into Randy's racing experience: factory contracts with Porsche, Mazda, Volvo, and Toyota. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona not once, but twice, and his 2015 induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame. We'll cover his exploits at Thunderhill, VIR, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Pikes Peak, Sonoma, Lime Rock, Willow Springs, and more!  From humble origins in a Mk1 VW Golf (no, not a GTI), to a factory-backed FX16 Toyota Corolla, to setting a Laguna Seca lap record in a McLaren Senna. Randy even worked on the set of 2 Fast 2 Furious as a driving instructor for the film's stars: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, and Devon Aoki – to name a few.  Randy eventually met Jason while filming an uncooperative Cayman GT4 for Motor Trend, and, despite a rocky start when Jason unexpectedly flung a Range Rover off track while racing Randy in an Alfa Romeo 4C, the two teamed up again to film multiple Ultimate Drag Race, Lap Battle and ICONS episodes for Hagerty. The whole gang laments some of the most irritating modern car tech: excessively bright headlights, lights that are somehow off at night, ABS systems that fully shut down when traveling backwards, AEB overreach, and EPAS systems that completely ruin a car's limit handling by curtailing the driver's ability to quickly catch a slide (like the Shelby GT350 Randy repeatedly spun and Jason crinkled at Willow Springs – not to mention the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Randy famously wrecked at Pikes Peak).  Speaking of handling, Randy divulges his dislike of twitchy cars like the Jaguar F-Type R and XJ, the KTM X-Bow, and Ariel Atom. Jason on the other hand loves an ass-y car like the V12 Vantage S, but says the Lotus Exige V6 Cup was so tail-happy it was uncontrollable. The Porsche Carrera GT is somewhere in the middle with mixed reviews and experience all around. While on the topic of handling dynamics, Randy tells us his secret plan to invent a fix for the C8 Corvette's trailing throttle oversteer. He also gives praise to Porsche's Lars Kern for his work on the latest crop of RS products – which may or may not be Randy's favorite track cars of all time out of the box, alongside the 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition. All of which receive top marks on Randy's understeer spectrum, and are polar opposites of the likes of a 1960s Cadillac.  We'll touch on Randy's personal car collection as well, which includes a Volvo 740 sedan and wagon, his 1977 Pontiac Trans Am “Randit” (and its oil starvation woes), Toyota Tundra tow vehicle, VW Karmann Ghia and early Tesla Model S.  Plus, Derek invents a new phrase for “road rage”, Randy bitch slaps cars out of his way, and also beautifully sings Primus' Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. 6-speed Swapped CLK63 AMG Black Series! — Carmudgeon Show w Jason Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott — Ep 173

The legendary, 500-hp Mercedes CLK63 AMG Black Series was never produced with a manual transmission. So, Derek had one built. === The Carmudgeon Show Sponsor, Vredestein Tires: https://www.vredestein.com/ Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === Derek Tam-Scott's company, OTS & Co., purchased a C209-chassis 2008 Mercedes CLK63 AMG Black Series for science/tax reasons and immediately sent it to Matt Kwiek of @kwiekclassics for a new Mercedes-sourced manual transmission swap. How does the legendary AMG M156 6.3-liter V-8 (which is actually 6.2 liters) work with a 6-speed manual? For science, Derek hired SCCA Hall of Fame race car driver Randy Pobst to set a lap time in both a stock, automatic CLK63 BS and a 6-speed swapped one. The Black Series is one of Jason Cammisa's favorite cars of all time. He attended its launch at Willow Springs raceway, where he struggled to keep up with an 80-year-old Denise McLuggage as she executed flawless and effortless laps in the exact same car. It's a fun story. The ‘mudgeons then briefly cover all the Black Series models: the R171 SLK55, C209 CLK63, R230 SL65, W204 C63, and SLS AMG.  Is the CLK Black Series peak AMG? Derek compares the 6-speed swapped CLK to the fifth-gen Pontiac GTO and E39 BMW M5 Dinan S2. And the Carmudgeons discuss whether other collectible cars should also be manual-swapped, including the Lexus LFA, Alfa Romeo 4C and 8C, and the E60 M5.  The boys also ponder if tearing out the OE tranny on the Black Series is a crime akin to that of the Sacrilege Motors 964 911 EV conversion.  Which wasn't, actually, a crime. We end with a brief discussion of twin-engine cars: a half-Leaf half-motorcycle, a Twini (dual-engine Mini Cooper), DuRocco (twin-engine Scirocco), a pre-war Alfa, and a Citroen 2CV Safari.  Plus, the van, Jynah, prepares for potentially slippery, wet and white conditions with a brand new set of Vredestein Wintrac Pros! Fixes, Maintenance and Fleet Upgrades – Carmudgeon Show feat Jason Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott Ep. 169

Derek and Jason own many cars and once in a while, many of them break. Or receive really cool upgrades. It's time for a car-nerd fleet update! === Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev See: https://www.vredestein.com/ And: https://www.radwood.com/socal-2024 === The boys start with discussing "de-advanced" ignition timing on the Rover SD1 — and Jason did his first-ever brake master cylinder rebuild. But the big issue is that Jason wants to downsize his fleet (he still has 10 cars) but loves the different experience that each car offers. The Rover has a big (ish) lazy V8 and is unlike anything else Jason has. Derek wants to be done with his Citroën CX because it sprung a hydraulic leak, but then found the Citroën community — and, hopefully, someone to work on it. And so maybe it'll stay.  Thanks to Derek's guilt, 9 of Jason's cars have fresh brake fluid — which doesn't seem like a big deal, but doing 9 brake-fluid bleeds is time consuming. And worse, Jason discovered that his E30 Touring still had ATE Super Blue in his car. Which confirms that it was at least a decade old. Derek's Porsche 944 no longer has a 14-year-old timing belt, which means it can be driven to Radwood SoCal (hopefully on new Vredestein tires, no less!) Jason and Derek talk about today's ridiculous trend of people changing timing belts at 3, 4, or 5 years, with no mileage on them. This is an epidemic in the Ferrari community — when mechanics happily double the recommended replacement interval.  Jason has been suspecting that his VW Cabriolet is suffering from SMS: the dreaded transmission self-machining syndrome that kills many 020 transmissions. But after some exploratory surgery, it really now seems like a bad wheel bearing. That would figure, since Beatrice the E30 (the 1989 325i) also needs a wheel bearing after completing a track day (with Randy Pobst as an instructor on Sonoma Raceway.) These tend to come in pairs. Just not on different cars! Derek suspects his S124 E320 wagon (with the dogleg 5-speed and 3.6-liter swap) has bad wheel bearings, too. More urgently, Derek is having a Motronic Month: he's finally troubleshooted some strange running on his Porsche 964, which has gotten progressively worse over the last decade. He also found that one ignition module had failed, so it was running on half of its spark plugs. A new idle control valve didn't fix it, but swapping a DME (engine computer, or ECU in non-Porsche speak) from his dad's 964 fixed everything. Jason's buddy's 993 is doing the same thing — so Derek might have just inadvertently found that car's problem. Jason had never heard of rebuilding an ECU (except on Honda Beats) but thats' it. Jason's cars mostly don't have DMEs, and he's been fighting with ignition timing on both of his 16-valve Volkswagens (the Scirocco and Cabriolet) and wonders if he just should upgrade all the old cars to a Holley EFI or Megasquirt. Derek found a hard top for his R129 Mercedes SL, in Florida, but shipping was too expensive. So he found a local one in the wrong color . Jason has once done that, with the wrong color hardtop on his 996 for track use, and Derek also bought a very expensive new softtop for that SL. RIP by the way to Bruno Sacco, to Mike Valentine, and almost to Jeremy Clarkson.  The R129 SL500 / 500SL is the best deal in the collector-car world, period.  Jason did another (for a total of three) Power Acoustic CP-71W Single-DIN wireless Apple CarPlay head unit. He loves them. And that's before the $140 (+ tax) pricing. Except that he won't put one in the Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 because the Becker is too iconic. Or the Beat, because of the Gathers (Honda) head unit in there. Or the e31 850CSi. Continental and Blaupunkt make retro-looking radios, but Becker's original units can be retrofitted with Bluetooth or Aux In. Porsche Classic PCM unit is amazing, but it's far too expensive for non-Porsches. Says Jason. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's time for a quick Carmudgeon Catch-Up. The boys have been busy filming, but they're back in the studio for a session to discuss what's been going on. Jason's Dodge Grand Caravan finally got the custom license plate he ordered almost a year ago – and its innocent profanity is making him laugh.  Beatrice the E30 325i is back on the road after a double-suspension swap with Jason's 325i Touring. Thanks to help from the legendary Bill Arnold Independent BMW, the Spec E30 kit is now on Beatrice, complete with a new clutch and throw-out bearing, and she's ready for track days and rallies. And, of course, taking Jason's niece to Thunderhill Raceway's Teen Survival driving school. Where G learned just how it feels to be in low-earth orbit.  And the 325iT switched back to factory antiroll bars with H&R's new springs, tuned specifically for E30 Touring, and Bilstein B8 shocks that were a gift from our friend Sreten at M539 Restoration in Germany.  Meanwhile, Jason also went to Radwood SoCal 2023, where he gave away a gorgeous set of RML Snowflake wheels to a deserving Scirocco fan. He also met @outlaw_welt — a fan and a gentleman who 3D-printed a bunch of Carmudgeon Show and Jason Cammisa Hagerty Show logo pieces. And gave Jason a ride to the airport in his C126 500SEC 6-speed manual.  Of course, no Carmudgeon Show would be complete without a discussion of Sacco-era Mercedes, and the boys successfully put on a Cars & Coffee in Berkeley on Bruno Sacco's 90th Birthday. More than 100 cars showed up, including almost a dozen W124 500Es. Quite an achievement — and Happy Birthday, Mr. Sacco! Meanwhile, Jason will have just completed his third 24 Hours of Lemons race at Sonoma Raceway (wish him luck and safety) with Bill Arnold and Randy Pobst. The last time they ran this race, 2 years ago, they won overall in their tired, battered E28 BMW. And Derek has major news to share: he's parting ways with ISSIMI to start his own dealership. Daihatsu? Daewoo? Either way, Derek will be peddling the Cheapest D in Town! Details to follow! And he spent a couple days driving his brother's Rivian R1S. Derek's bro has what could possibly be the best 2-car solution ever: an ND2 Miata and a Rivian. This leads the boys to discuss: what would happen if they had to get down to just two cars. Would Jason keep just the Scirocco and the Ferrari? What else?  And could Derek actually do it? The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Tesla electric cars with BYD batteries are already in the “C-sample test phase”.   - The rumours come from the portal cls.cn, which refers to information from the Financial Associated Press.   - BYD will “supply Tesla with blade batteries in the second quarter of next year”. BYD would not comment on the information to the portal.   - Tesla relies on LFP cells from CATL for the standard range versions of the Model 3 and Model Y produced in China.   - Either Tesla wants to test and establish an alternative supplier for the standard range models here, or it could be the planned new entry-level model. This model, preemptively called the ‘Model 2', is being developed in China   - BYD uses the Blade battery in its Han EV electric sedan and Tang EV electric SUV, among others – but it was announced from the start that external customers would also be supplied.   - According to PushEVs, BYD is supposed to achieve 140 Wh/kg at pack level. With the LFP cells that CATL supplies to Tesla, on the other hand, only 125 Wh/kg are said to be possible. At cell level, the blade batteries, which have been given this name because of their unusually large and long cells, achieve up to 166 Wh/kg. The cells are 905 millimetres long, 118 millimetres high and 13.5 millimetres wide.   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/08/06/tesla-may-begin-sourcing-batteries-from-byd/   THE GENESIS GV60 BEFORE YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SEE IT   - Genesis will launch the third fully-electric model based on Hyundai's new E-GMP platform. Expected to be called the Genesis GV60, the vehicle will be e a more luxurious alternative to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, and based on this photo, it's also going to be a bit more conventional looking too.   - The rear end of the GV60 has the same fastback look as the EV6 and it also has an interesting detail in the C-pillar. It looks like the chrome trim that follows the upper part of the side glass dips and makes a V shape behind the rear door - this is quite an unusual detail and it looks like the inside of the V will be black to make it seem part of the rear glass.   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/524054/genesis-gv60-spied-fully-uncovered   ARRIVAL VAN COMPLETES FIRST AUTONOMOUS RIDE   - EV startup Arrival has shared news that its electric van has completed a demonstration at a fully functioning parcel depot without a driver inside. This is the first time the Arrival Van has completed an autonomous drive of this kind, which now paves the way for road testing.   - Last month, Arrival received an order for five of its electrified Arrival Buses from the City of Anaheim, California, which followed the company's news in May that it had partnered with Uber to design an Arrival Car specifically for rideshare drivers.   - Arrival shared news of a successful live demonstration of its ADS within an Arrival Van at a fully functional parcel depot in the UK. The Arrival Van successfully completed all operations a commercial fleet driver would perform on an average day, but did so autonomously.   - Max Kumskoy, Arrival's head of advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems, elaborates:   At Arrival, we are building supplementary technologies that will help drivers. Depot maneuvers are the most accident-prone parts of a worker's shift and with our technology, we hope to introduce greater safety by removing human driving errors happening in confined environments. We are starting with a fixed controlled environment in the depot, where we are truly able to test and validate our technology. We can then understand how it will operate on public roads, in our vehicles, and how it can be implemented worldwide.   Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/08/02/arrival-van-completes-first-autonomous-ride-without-driver-road-tests-to-follow/   FERRARI BOSS HAS NO FEARS OVER ELECTRIC FUTURE   - Ferrari (RACE.MI), the sports car maker synonymous with roaring petrol engines, welcomes the shift to electric powertrains and is confident of retaining its lead in the market for high performance cars, its chairman said on Monday.   - European Union last month proposed an effective ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 as part of its measures to combat global warming, posing a challenge to automakers that have made powerful engines a key selling point.   - Ferrari Chairman and acting CEO John Elkann told analysts on Monday the company known for its 'Prancing Horse' logo saw the change in technology as an opportunity.   - Ferrari has pledged to launch its first all-electric car in 2025.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/luxury-carmaker-ferrari-sticks-main-outlook-after-strong-q2-2021-08-02/   FIRESTONE BREAKS GROUND ON PROJECT TIED TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES   - A global auto parts supplier has broken ground on a $51 million project adding 250 jobs at a rural Kentucky plant in an expansion tied to auto industry plans to ramp up electric vehicle production. Firestone Industrial Products Co. was joined by state and local officials Monday as construction officially began on the expansion in Williamsburg, a statement from Gov. Andy Beshear said. The project is largely geared toward producing air suspension systems for electric vehicles.   Original Source : https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-electric-vehicles-7a3e08d4efdce1f25cd910ab565ff6e7   ONE MILLION ELECTRIC VEHICLES ON GERMAN ROADS   - Germany with half a year delay has achieved its 2020 target to get one million electric vehicles on its roads, with 57,000 being registered in July alone.   - “One million electric cars mean a million times less CO2 emissions in traffic, because 60% of greenhouse gas emissions from traffic in Germany are attributable to cars alone,” said environment minister Svenja Schulze.   - Germany's car industry increasingly bets on e-mobility, with top seller Volkswagen planning to boost the share of electric vehicles as part of is European sales to 60% by 2030. VW has earmarked $14bn alone for battery cell orders from Swedish manufacturer Northvolt.   Original Source : https://www.rechargenews.com/energy-transition/cheaper-than-filling-up-at-petrol-pump-one-million-electric-vehicles-on-german-roads/2-1-1047472   MODIFIED TESLA MODEL S PLAID SETS EV LAP RECORD AT LAGUNA SECA   - Unplugged Performance was one of the first shops to get its hands on a Tesla Model S Plaid and it immediately set about modifying it to be a Pikes Peak beast. After a great run at the Hill Climb, it headed to Laguna Seca to develop the car even further. The UP Plaid was so heavily modified that it no longer counts as a production car, but regardless, it set a damn impressive new EV lap record of 1:28.213 with Randy Pobst at the wheel. In case you're wondering, that's within one second of the track's production car lap record, which was also set by Pobst in a McLaren Senna.   - The vehicle Pobst drove is known as "Dark Helmet"   - There's a new steering wheel, too, so no comedy yoke.   Original Source : https://www.thedrive.com/news/41807/modified-tesla-model-s-plaid-sets-ev-lap-record-at-laguna-seca   GLOBAL PLUG-IN CAR SALES JUNE 2021: RECORD OF OVER 580,000   - Global passenger plug-in electric car sales increased in June by 153% year-over-year to about 583,000, which is the new all-time monthly record.   - Plug-in market share improved to 8.7%, including:   BEVs: about 407,000 (up 154% year-over-year) and 6.1% share PHEVs: about 176,500 (up 151% year-over-year) and 2.6% share Total: 583,507 (up 153% year-over-year) and 8.7% share   - So far this year, passenger plug-in electric car sales stand at over 2.5 million, while the market share increased to 6.3%. This is a great result in the context of 2021's favourite vehicle, the Tesla Model 3, not shipping in any significant volume in July.   - July's 84.7% plugin result comprised 64.1% full electrics (BEVs) and 20.6% plugin hybrids (PHEVs), a similar ratio to recent months. Cumulative plugin share for 2021 year-to-date now stands at 82.9%, with BEVs at just over 58%.   - Another notable Norwegian performance in July was the new Hyundai Ioniq 5, which was neck-and-neck with the VW ID.4 in sales volume. On sale for just over 2 months, it has quickly ramped to a volume that will soon put it inside the cumulative top 10.   - BYD has just landed 100 units of the new BYD Tang BEV (with LFP blade battery) in Norway this past weekend. More than 90% of the parts used in Tesla's Shanghai factory are from Chinese suppliers, Tesla China told a local media last month. Tesla also uses LG Chem batteries in its Shanghai plant, where it also is making Model Y sport-utility vehicles. It isn't clear whether CATL's batteries are used in Model Ys.   Original Source : https://www.marketwatch.com/story/catl-extends-battery-supply-deal-with-tesla-271624897015   CHINA'S LARGEST BATTERY MAKER CATL EXTENDS AGREEMENT WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLE GIANT TESLA TO 2025   - Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the Shenzhen-listed electric-car battery maker, said it has reached an agreement with Tesla to provide lithium batteries to the US electric vehicle maker's China production plants for an additional 30 months   - China's largest producer of automobile battery packs said in a stock exchange filing on Monday evening that it reached an agreement last Friday with Tesla to provide battery packs for the US electric vehicle's subsidiary in Shanghai up until December 2025.   - “The agreement signifies further acknowledgement by Tesla of the product quality and production capability of [our company], and will help strengthen the long-term cooperation relationship between the company and Tesla,” CATL said.   Original Source : https://www.scmp.com/business/banking-finance/article/3139085/chinas-largest-battery-maker-catl-extends-agreement   PIKES PEAK WINNERS INCLUDE TESLA MODEL S PLAID   - The 99th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) was crazy, exhausting, dangerous, and one of the greatest motorsports event you can see. Fifty-two drivers and their crew had spent close to a month preparing for the annual time-attack hill climb near Colorado Springs.   - Spectators roam past fences for a better view, and even the blades of the low-flying camera helicopter mostly drowned out the siren required for electric vehicles competing here.   - The true king of Pikes Peak Mountain was back this year: Romain Dumas, the crazy Frenchman who set an unbeaten record of seven minutes, 57 seconds in Volkswagen's all-electric ID. R Pikes Peak racer in 2018.   - Randy Pobst was back too. After sending a Tesla Model 3 flying into a wall at Bottomless Pit, he came back for more. This time winning the Exhibition division with his new Model S Plaid from Unplugged Performance, but still finishing 10 seconds behind a 1996 BMW M3   Original Source : https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36862669/pikes-peak-hill-climb-results-winners/   ALL-ELECTRIC MUSTANG COBRA JET 1400 ROASTS THE QUARTER-MILE   - Bob Tasca III got behind the wheel of the all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 at NHRA Nationals yesterday and set a new world record. The veteran ran the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 for a quarter mile in 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph, crushing the 8.27 seconds at 168 mph recorded in September of last year.   - The name of Ford's all-electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 may be somewhat misleading, since it's throwing 1500+ hp to the rear wheels instead of 1400. Ford says that's the equivalent to three 2021 Mustang GT V8 powerplants combined   - According to Ford Performance, this car was built in a collaboration with Cascadia Motion for the inverter and motors and Watson Engineering for the chassis support and development as well as the roll cage. This is Ford's first factory fully electric dragster prototype, launched in April of last year.   - It's nice to watch a race without having to bring ear protection, but does it feel as exciting?   Original Source : https://www.thedrive.com/news/41299/all-electric-mustang-cobra-jet-1400-roasts-the-quarter-mile-with-a-new-nhra-record   VOLKSWAGEN ID BUZZ SPIED WITH PRODUCTION BODY FOR FIRST TIME   - photographers have managed to capture the all-electric van using its own body. Eschewing the Transporter skin used by the test mules, the Microbus for the EV era has been caught wearing the production bodywork   - the prototype hides its final look underneath clever camo. It would appear that VW is going for a Renault van look with the disguise applied onto the ID Buzz's front fascia, featuring stickers on the headlights to conceal the actual clusters.   - The fully covered rear side glass suggests we are dealing with the cargo version of the ID Buzz, unless it's simply body-colored camo to hide the interior.   - Even with all of this makeup, it's fairly obvious the production model will be quite similar to the showcar unveiled four and a half years ago in Detroit.   Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/516718/volkswagen-id-buzz-production-spy-photos/   BMW I3 ERA COMES TO AN END IN THE U.S. THIS JULY   - BMW i3 will soon stop its production for the U.S. market. According to a BMW dealer bulletin, the final production for the electric i3 hatchback is scheduled for July 2021. Over the last 12 months, the i3 inventory for the U.S. was at its lowest point and customers often had difficulties securing a production slot. The latest dealer info suggests that there are only around 180 production slots remaining.   - BMW is now heavily invested in the launch of the BMW i4 and iX next-generation electric cars and there is very little incentive to promote or market the heavily discounted and incentivized i3.   - When it goes out of production – likely in 2022 for the rest of the markets – the i3 will go down as the first and maybe last BMW built on a full carbon fiber frame. When BMW launched the i3 and i8 in 2013, the two projects were not only considered the most advanced within BMW, but also in the automotive world. The first electric BMW and also the first hybrid sportscar from Munich made use of BMW's knowledge in carbon fiber construction, but at a much larger scale.   Original Source : https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/06/25/bmw-i3-era-comes-to-an-end-in-the-u-s-this-july/   AUSTRALIA'S CHEAPEST EV SET TO FALL UNDER $40K MARK IN NSW   - Thanks to the New South Wales Government's new electric vehicle subsidy, the cheapest EV on the Aussie market, the MG ZS EV, just got even cheaper.  Under the new statewide EV scheme, NSW will provide 25,000 eligible buyers with a $3000 rebate and will also ditch stamp duty on electric cars valued up to $68,750. The abolition of stamp duty will also apply to EVs valued at up to $78,000.  This means buyers in Australia's most populous state could conceivably pay as little as $39,670 drive-away for MG's electric SUV, which normally retails for $43,990 drive-away.   - The EV subsidy and stamp duty abolition is part of the NSW Government's recently announced $490 million Electric Vehicle Strategy and will come into effect from September 1 of 2021.   Original Source : https://www.whichcar.com.au/car-news/mg-zs-ev-nsw-ev-subsidy   THE LEVC E-CAMPER IS AN ELECTRIC CAMPERVAN BASED ON A LONDON TAXI   - Holidaying at home is a necessary trend, but all the hotels are booked up. A campervan is the solution.   - Meet the solution to all your woes, an electric-powered camper effectively based on LEVC's London taxi. An e-motor provides power for 60 miles of zero-emission range, while a 1.3-litre engine will buzz to life in the background as a range-extender if your campsite's a little further. Total range is 304 miles, but that engine never drives the wheels, merely a background artist topping up the 31 kWh battery.   - Crucially, all your amenities – including the cooker – will run on electricity alone   - It'll sleep four – two up, two down – while the front seats flip round 180 degrees so you can all dine convivially around a table.   - Prices start at £62,250 excluding VAT.   Original Source : https://www.topgear.com/car-news/british/levc-e-camper-electric-campervan-based-london-taxi   e-Camper | Electric Camper Van   - “The campervan market is growing rapidly and, despite these vehicles being used for coastal and countryside adventures which often include national parks and protected areas, they are still powered by petrol or diesel engines. This is a major conflict; we can see a shift in consumer attitudes, with demand for greener mobility solutions to help to protect and improve air quality. Our new electric, zero-emissions capable e-Camper offers the perfect solution and is well-equipped with high quality features that can be tailored to meet a range of customer requirements.”Joerg Hofmann, CEO of LEVC   Original Source : https://www.levc.com/electric-camper-van/   TESLA OFFERS FREE SUPERCHARGING AT SELECT LOCATIONS FOR FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY   - Tesla owners traveling in California during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend may receive a special perk from the company. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Unplugged Performance Reveals 'Pikes Plaid'"On June 10, 2021, Elon Musk formally kicked off deliveries of the 1,020-hp Tesla Model S Plaid. Approximately two days later, on June 12, Unplugged Performance debuted its race-prepped Model S Plaid that's set to compete at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (with our resident pro racing driver, Randy Pobst, behind the wheel). " says Motor Trend: "The interior is almost completely stripped out. After ditching items such as the car's airbags, a center console, and door panels, Unplugged Performance fits this tri-motor Tesla with a roll cage and a racing seat with six-point racing belts. The body is stock except for a huge front splitter and a gigantic adjustable rear wing. Likewise, the Plaid racer retains its factory air springs, however, it employs custom Unplugged Performance/Bilstein dampers and a three-way adjustable rear anti-roll bar. The car rides on Yokohama Advan slicks on custom forged aluminum wheels." https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-s-plaid-pikes-peak-race/ ADL presents EV Bus For U.S."Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), a subsidiary of NFI Group (NFI), unveiled its first all-electric three-axle double-deck bus for North America. Following trials with select transit operators, the vehicle is now launching on the broader North American markets." says electrive.com: "The 45-foot Enviro500EV CHARGE has a passenger capacity of up to 82 seats, including 53 on the upper deck. An electric portal axle with hub motors provides propulsion with 2×125kW peak power output. The battery capacity of the Enviro500EV Charge stands at 648 kWh of energy storage integrated “in the chassis and the rear of the vehicle for a low centre of gravity and great stability”. Charging can be done via industry-standard CCS1" https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/13/adl-presents-triple-axle-double-decker-bus-for-north-america/ BYD's electric school bus will feed electricity back to classrooms"Chinese EV automaker BYD officially introduced its new electric Type D school bus, available in the US in lengths of 10.6, 11.6, and 12 meters, and capable of carrying up to 84 passengers. Most notably, the school bus enables bi-directional charging. According to the company, the bus can be charged overnight when energy demand is low, and feed clean energy back to the school during school hours" says The Next Web: "The bus features a lithium iron phosphate battery and has a range of roughly 250 kilometers on a single charge. That's 57km more than the electric school buses of Blue Bird Corporation, one of the biggest industry players, can go. Although it's unclear when and where BYD's new ebuses will debut, the announcement comes in perfect sync with President Biden's EV infrastructure scheme" https://thenextweb.com/news/byds-electric-school-bus-feed-electricity-back-classrooms UK in talks with 6 firms to build gigafactories"Britain is in talks with six companies for building gigafactories to produce electric vehicle batteries, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people briefed on the discussions." reports Reuters today: "Ford Motor Co (F.N), Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T), LG Corp (003550.KS), Samsung (005930.KS) and start-ups Britishvolt and InoBat Auto are in talks with the British government or local authorities about locations for potential factories and financial support, according to the report. The British government's plan to prohibit the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and hybrids by 2035 will require the country's vehicle plants to shift to producing electric models." https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/britain-talks-with-6-firms-about-building-gigafactories-ev-batteries-ft-2021-06-16/ Russian Government Increases Investment for Electric Vehicles."The Russian government plans to invest 777 billion rubles ($10.5 billion) into electric and hydrogen vehicle development by 2030, according to documents obtained by the Vedomosti news outlet." says The Moscow Times: "In the next nine years Russia's electric vehicle (EV) share of the auto market could grow from 0.05% to 15%, officials at the Ministry of Economic Development said. By 2030 there could be 1.5 million EVs on Russian roads, supported by 20,000 new charging stations, according to the plan." https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2021/06/01/russian-government-increases-investment-for-electric-vehicles-a74067 Tesla desperately needs a No. 2 for Elon Musk"While Musk is not likely to step aside at Tesla (TSLA) anytime soon, it's evident he has many more interests — some would call them distractions — beyond electric vehicles. He's been obsessed with cryptocurrencies, especially dogecoin" says CNN Business: "It makes no sense for Tesla to be essentially a one-man show while SpaceX has an extremely adept COO in Gwynne Shotwell, one of that company's first hires, who is capable of stepping in to lead if Musk were unable to do so. Why doesn't Musk have someone like Shotwell at Tesla? Tesla has suffered a bit of a brain drain over the past few years, with several high-profile executives leaving. Most recent, and most alarming to Tesla investors, is this week's departure of Jerome Guillen. The nearly 11-year Tesla veteran had been running the trucking division and previously served in many roles, including president of the automotive division and program director on Tesla's Model S sedan. David Whiston, an auto analyst at Morningstar, said in an email to CNN Business that the only executive left who might make sense as a Musk successor is Andrew "Drew" Baglino, Tesla's senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, who has been with the company since 2006." QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS RAJEEV NARAYANMy Volt makes a strange ethereal moaning sound at low speed, that I am not a fan of.. That being said I understand that regulations mandating these low speed sounds are increasing. It would be interesting if these could be changed, downloaded, or even self made like ringtones today. Perhaps you could even decide which one gets played based on GPS location. As for sounds at higher speeds- I am not a fan of that, one of the things I enjoy about my EV is the quiet ride, thst being said I can see a similar market for customizable / downloaded high-speed sounds- “Ferrari” or “spaceship” may be interesting.  LIAM FROM OHIOI am not an EV owner but, I think car manufacturers should just put a microphone under the hood of their EVs,✝ and pump the motor sounds through the interior (and exterior) speakers. (Of course with adjustable volume.) I love the sound of motor whine! Have you heard how cool the EV1 sounded even without fake motor sounds?* Regarding my opinion fake motor sounds, Porsche, Audi, and Jaguar have nailed it in my opinion! Although, I don't really care for the fake sounds that the e-Golf and Mach-E make when accelerating, as they sound too much like combustion engine sounds. JAMES COYLEI have to agree the Zoe Pedestrian noise, is really is annoying BUT it does come in really useful when driving in busy town areas with lots of people walking around, HOWEVER the button to turn it on/off is in a really awkward place, and you cant turn it on, for instance when reversing, only off. EG: if there was a button to turn it on, on the steering wheel you could click it on and off at will, I'm most cautious when silently reversing slowly out of a super market car parking space, you cant turn it on, it refuses to make any noise whilst reversing, when its at its most quiet. IAN HARRISON FROM HULL•I am a blind enthusiast of electric vehicles but do worry about not being able to use yet another of my senses while out and about. So few drivers fail to recognise the significance of a white cane or guide dog compared with years ago that crossing uncontrolled roads is always a gamble anyway. Perhaps cars could be taught to notice the cane or the profile of a guide dog and its owner, then perform a beep whether or not your system is switched on. •Silent cars when combined with this fad for shared spaces is a double whammy for both the blind and even parents and small children. •Can I give a shout out to Motability UK who provide leased vehicles to the disabled. They are slowly increasing their range of EVs, including the ID3. I can't wait to get my wife an electric vehicle next time around. STEPHEN HARRISSo far as EV sounds are concerned, they should be silent.  However, having the option to change the sound of the horn or have two different buttons for the horn, so that the driver can give an appropriate warning for the circumstance would be ideal.  The usual horn sound can scare the daylights out of unsuspecting pedestrians and I think many sensible drivers are hesitant to use it for that reason, whereas a sound like a bike bell would be enough to get them to turn in the direction of the vehicle and see what is happening.  A bike bell is pretty universally recognised warning to get out of the way.s (PEVs).  They would be an ideal first and last mile solution and indeed are plenty capable enough to make the whole journey in many instances. MARK ORRICONo artificial noises please. Inside or out. There are some nearly silent piston cars out there. It's on the driver and pedestrians to avoid being run over and running people over. When I got my Niro in February I had it 2 days with the reverse beeping and pulled the front bumper off to disconnect the speaker…..my first new car ever and day 2 I'm pulling the thing apart, I got an ev partly for a quieter vehicle not one that was going to wake all my neighbors up when I back out of the garage. ALUN MORGANTo me it's very clear, there should be no rules about EV noise at all. Regulations should be technology agnostic: Minimum external noise limits should exist for all vehicles at low speed. I think the current AVAS regs allowing quite a lot of freedom under an “engine like noise” are a good way to go. Equally: Maximum external noise should be regulated, there are standards for drive by noise, but regulations on maximum noise at low speeds are probably a good idea now that a lot of cars simply have a speaker under the hood that could easily be abused. As for internal noise - go for broke, I don't care if you want your EV to sound like a V12, or your V12 to sound like an EV (good luck with that). The market will provide/decide. I suspect as EVs become ubiquitous, playing faux engine noises from your audio system will turn out to be a fad.  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What's the best way to navigate an EV journey and charge on the way? When we started this podcast, we had a list of guests that would compose our school of white whales that we dreamed of getting.  One of the top was Randy Pobst.  He is an excellent driver, instructor and television personality and has seemingly won every race event he has entered, sometimes multiple times.  As good as a driver as he is, he is an even better person.  He routinely attends amateur races, many times bringing his own “Flying Moose” team Volvo and walks the paddock and talks to everyone there and is always willing to help with friendly advice or to answer a question.  To this point, our biggest regret for the podcast was the microphone issues we had early in the first episode with Randy as a guest at the Lucky Dog race in Portland at PIR.  This time, we triple checked and we were able to have Randy on without any technical issues on our end.  Please welcome Randy Pobst back to our podcast to talk all about cars and racing, and even a bit about motorcycles.  We still miss his “Racing Line” series, and the “Head-To-Head” show is greatly missed.  (It was hosted by two of our original white whales guests Jason Cammisa and Jonny Lieberman.  Maybe we can trade a seat for an intro, lol.) Randy is so busy with so many projects, it is truly amazing that he takes the time to come onto our podcast.  On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, Bill wanted to talk about what a dead pedal is and how it is used on track.  We aren't sure why he thought this was a good segment topic, but it really did turn out well.    You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc.    Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving.   For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, under shows and click on the podcast you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.    We hope you enjoy this episode!   PS  Please don’t forget that if you are looking to add an Apex Pro to your driving telemetry system, don’t forget to use our discount code for all Apex Pro systems you will receive a free Windshield Suction Cup Mount for the system, a savings of $40.  Just enter the code “ghitlikesapex!” when you order.  We have two systems for our team and Bill is looking to add a third for this season, pending CFO approval from Vicki.  They are a great system and truly invaluable in safely increasing your speed on track and/or autocross etc. Best regards,   Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  Autocorrect strikes again on Randy’s earlier email in a most hilarious way.  Perhaps a future theme option.  And then Bill breaks out into a “Love Boat” reference.  Most of our listeners may need to use Google.  And then we break out into bad college food habits.  We do eventually return to cars at some point.  Promise. 2)  The endurance racing talk begins, and we are talking before the Champ Car race where Randy has already posted a video or two from the race on his YouTube channel.  Great video to watch. 3)  Randy has a teleporter.  It is the only way he can be at so many track events.  We saw him in Charlotte and the next thing we know, he is posting from Laguna Seca and then the next day he is back at Charlotte in the Flying Moose. 4)  It is story time about the time we shared a race car with Randy at Portland.  It was our first time doing an engine change.  Why is the Capri taking so long?  We did it in less than one day there. 5)  It appears that Randy has even more race car projects going than we do.  That is equally comforting and troubling at the same time, lol. 6)  Randy goes into several stories about driving, racing, and learning to work with cars, both mechanically and driving.  If you don’t get faster from this episode, you should listen to It again. Randy is a firm believer in constantly learning ad fully admits he is always “In Training”. 7)  One of our favorite quotes ever, - When you are in trouble, why would you want to crash faster. 8)  We discuss what you should be looking at and Randy’s preference for saying “Eyes In” vs that more standard “Eyes Up”, same meaning but a different reaction or perception by the student driver. 9)  How karting can help you with your driving but can also hinder your progression if you do not take into account the differences inherent in the different suspension and drivetrain variables in each. 10)  The difference Randy sees between racing for a team and leading a race team at an event. 11)  We eventually worked our way back to where we discussed tires and their importance in racing and your car’s performance. 12)  Randy is an adopter of our proposed racing series with 500 treadwear tires from Walmart as the spec tire for the series.  We wonder if Douglas would be interested in a partnering sponsorship. 13)  A story about a lemons race car with a stripper pole?  Yep, it’s in here and it wasn't just a decoration. 14)  How to become a sponsored race driver?  Randy goes through how he did it and what may work for you. 15)  Randy shares several of his thoughts on getting a car to be faster and handle better.  This is one episode where if you apply what we discuss with Randy, you will be faster. 16)  Our questions are like apexes for Randy, he gets really close to them, sometimes touches on them, while he drives by at high speed, lol. 17)  Randy discusses modern cars and the plusses and minuses of the increasing horsepower and the maturation of the many driver aides. 18)  He even puts up with us and our Fast and Furious Storytime Questions. 19)  Vicki starts to discuss front wheel vs rear wheel drive cars with Randy.  She is still not a fan but maybe she will listen to Randy. 20)  Randy was also kind enough to share a secret approach he uses at Watkins Glen. Special Post Game Bonus:  Vicki and Randy talking about their ADD’s impact on their racing and about skid pad training.

Lara Vernon is our guest for this episode.  She is a racing driver that is rapidly moving up the ranks of amateur racing.  We have raced alongside her at our last event in Charlotte on the Roval and she just returned from winning the B class event with the true 24 hour race at CMP with the Sorry For Party team, driving in both their Firebird and 944 race cars during the race and posting the fastest laps for the weekend.  Lara also owns a boutique exotic car dealership called “Rare Exotic Vehicles” in Asheville, North Carolina, that deals with very cool vintage hot rods and cars from the 1930’s to excellent examples suitable for Radwood and other venues. You can Follow Lara’s racing exploits at @Lara.is.racing and her @rareexoticvehicles on Instagram or on Facebook.  On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, we talk about the importance of hydration at the track and several ways to stay hydrated.  No, not that way.  At least until after the track goes cold. We hope you enjoy this episode!   Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  Several excellent cars Lara has currently that are looking for a new home. 2)  How autocross was (again) the gateway drug towards her wheel to wheel racing.  It’s not free, but it is very good way to learn car control and is also a low cost way of getting started.  (Winning several races and a championship was also a good way to show she was on the right track) and led to Lara getting her SCCA racing license. 3)  Vicki confuses the Fiesta ST with the Fiestas that she remembered from years ago.  Bill has not done a good job of visiting car dealers with her.  This will likely be remedied shortly. 4)  How she came to first meet Ron Mexico/Jeff Caplan and then the Race Bar team.  How her first race with Race Bar went in late 2019 and then again at the Charlotte Roval a few weeks ago.  An excellent companion for getting into the wonderful abyss that is endurance racing. 5)  How Lara attempted to challenge Dick Freelane’s mustache, quite a noble but usually futile effort. 6)  We hear about her experience racing at Road Atlanta in the snow.  The track is plenty exciting without having to rely on being snow covered. 7)  Lara has pursued and succeeded in amateur racing and has begun to dip her toe into some of the higher level opportunities with teams and sponsors.  It is a challenging sport to convert to making a living, or even breaking even. 8)  Lot of stories of her racing with Race Bar and some of the shared trials and tribulations both teams had at the Roval with Lucky Dog.  9)  How Lara almost met Randy Pobst at the Charlotte Roval, how she almost raced against him, and how her Lobster faired against Randy’s Moose. 10)  We discuss how to make your own skid pad using cracked corn animal feed.  If she pulls it off, we hope we get an invite. 11)  She not only wins in “meat space” but also won a 24 hour endurance race in iRacing. 12)  The Ayrton Senna miniseries came up again in discussion.  We cannot wait for it to come out on Netflix.  If you have not seen the Ayrton Senna documentary entitles “Senna”, you are missing a great one. 13)  Vicki shows off her car skills by confusing a Kia Soul with a Nissan Cube.

Show #879   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 31st August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA MODEL 3 WINS 1ST & 2ND  AT PIKES PEAK "The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, welcomed three Tesla Model 3s to the field on August 30. America’s Mountain was taken on by three unique Tesla racecars, driven by Blake Fuller, Josh Allen and Randy Pobst. Two of those cars took 1st and 2nd place." says Tesmanian: "Blake Fuller, in a 2018 Tesla Model 3, won the race with a best time in this, the 98th running, with an unofficial time of 11: 02.802. Randy Pobst was the runner up in the 2020 Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Ascen-R, with a second-best, unofficial time of 11: 04.131. During the first run of the second day of qualifying, Randy Pobst's Model 3 was hit hard at speed. It seemed that he would not be able to take part in the race on August 30th. However, the car was significantly overhauled and still ultimately achieved 2nd place in the event."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-model-3-wins-1st-2nd-place-in-exhibition-class-at-pikes-peak-2020   U.S. SUPPLY OF VW ID4 EXPECTED TO BE LIMITED "Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh told Automotive News Publisher Jason Stein in a podcast interview to be broadcast this week that ID4 supply is expected to be tight for U.S. dealers at least until production of the BEV begins in 2022 in Chattanooga." says Automotive News: "Volkswagen will use a centralized online reservation system in North America to accept initial $100 refundable deposits from consumers either online or from a VW dealership to hold their place in line for an ID4, Movassaghi said last week. Later, customers will be asked to go into the dealership or continue online to deposit an additional $400 to confirm their order and lock in their configuration. Both deposits will be fully refundable until the car is delivered. The actual sales price will still be set by the local dealer and could differ from the sticker price, which has not been disclosed. Keogh suggested that the ID4's sticker price would be "a tick over" $30,000, after available credits."   Keogh said: "Right now, there are a lot more mouths to feed than there [are] vehicles. We're going to continue to fight for every car. But we could probably use a few more."   https://www.autonews.com/mobility-report/us-supply-vw-id4-expected-be-limited   TESLA ROLLS OUT SOFTWARE UPDATE TO LET ITS CARS’ CAMERAS SEE SPEED LIMIT SIGNS. "Tesla is pushing a software update that will let its vehicles’ Autopilot system detect speed limit signs using their cameras. When the camera detects a speed limit sign, it will be displayed on the driver visualization in the car and used to set a speed limit warning, according to the software release notes." reports The Verge: "The latest software update also adds to its traffic light and stop sign control features, and will sound a chime when your Tesla is sitting at a stoplight that turns green. It’s only intended as a notification so it’s up to the driver to decide whether and when to actually move the car forward."   https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/30/21407438/tesla-software-speed-limit-self-driving-cars   ELECTRIC VEHICLES DESERVE A NEW EPA RANGE TEST "There are a number of factors that make an EV's EPA range unachievable in real-world driving at the highway speeds where range matters most. For starters, EVs can benefit from the EPA test's speed fluctuations via regenerative braking, which puts energy back into the battery. Most gas-powered vehicles can't do that." says Car & Driver: "This is why gasoline-powered vehicles regularly beat their EPA highway figures in our real-world 75-mph highway test, yet no EV has even matched its EPA range. An Audi e-tron came closest, missing its label value by 7 percent. All of this means that if you want an EV that can repeatedly drive 200 miles on the highway between charges, you'll need to look for one with an EPA range around 350 miles."   https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a33825136/evs-deserve-a-new-epa-range-test/   THE SECRET ADJUSTMENT FACTOR TESLA USES TO GET ITS BIG EPA RANGE NUMBERS "When it comes to EV range, Tesla appears untouchable. Despite pouring billions into electric-vehicle programs, established automakers have failed to make up much ground when it comes to the range game, and winning that game remains a crucial part of winning over buyers. So how does Tesla do it?" asks Car & Driver: "EVs are strapped to a dynamometer—essentially a treadmill for cars—and repeatedly run through a test regimen that ends only when the battery is depleted to the point that the vehicle can no longer maintain the required speed. the EPA allows automakers the option to run three additional drive cycles and use those results to earn a more favorable adjustment factor. Currently, only Tesla and Audi employ this strategy for their EVs, and Tesla scores the most advantageous results, with adjustments that range from 29.5 percent on the Model 3 Standard Range Plus to 24.4 percent on the Model Y Performance. If Tesla had used the standard adjustment factor of 30 percent, the Model Y Performance's window-sticker range would drop to 292 miles. But because Tesla takes advantage of the EPA's alternate methodology, the company can instead claim a 315-mile range."   Read more: https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a33824052/adjustment-factor-tesla-uses-for-big-epa-range-numbers/   LIGHTNING SYSTEMS LOWERS PRICES OF ELECTRIC POWERTRAINS WHILE ADDING AND ENHANCING FEATURES Commercial electric vehicle manufacturer Lightning Systems announced it is lowering the prices of its 2021 battery and fuel cell electric vehicles by 10 to 50% for Class 3 to Class 8 vehicles. n addition to lower prices, zero-emission vehicles from Colorado’s Lightning Systems also will have new features, including:   – High-speed Level 2 charging – Faster DC fast charging systems – Enhanced telematics and new remote software management features for fleet managers and drivers – In-cab display enhancements in all vehicles – Improved range and payload capacity from higher energy density battery solutions Lightning Systems’ electric commercial vehicles are built on familiar industry-leading chassis such as the Ford Transit 350HD, Ford E-450, Ford F-550 and Chevrolet 6500XD..   https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/08/lightning-systems-lowers-prices-of-electric-powertrains-while-adding-and-enhancing-features/   GM ELECTRIC VEHICLES WILL HAVE CORVETTE-LEVEL ENGINEERING "InsideEVs has learned that the Corvette Engineering team, which contains some of the top talent at the automaker, is being moved from Global Products Programs to the Autonomous and Electric Vehicles program team, which is led by Ken Morris. While this may seem like snoozy corporate machinations to some, it's actually a pretty big deal." says InsideEVs: "To start, though, this doesn't mean that we should expect GM to announce an all-electric Corvette any time soon – the latest iteration of that storied model, the C8, just launched in July of last year and this generation could be expected to stay in production for maybe six or more years. The significance here is much deeper. Sure, we expect we'll eventually see an all-electric Corvette, but what this move is intended to do is put the same high-performance DNA that can be found in the C8 into the company's electric vehicles."   https://insideevs.com/news/441210/gm-corvette-engineering-team-ev/   TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME’S MYSTERIOUS ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM EXPLAINED  "The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is a plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle (PHEV) with an unusual all-wheel drive (AWD) system. Unlike a conventional system which would connect the front engine to a rear differential to drive the rear wheels, the RAV4 Prime’s system has a gas engine and electric motor up front to drive the front two wheels, and a separate rear electric motor to drive the rear two wheels. There is no mechanical connection between the front and rear drive systems." writes Torqeu News: "In every possible drive mode configuration, the RAV4 Prime offers power to the rear wheels. The RAV4 Prime’s drivetrain can be configured for all-electric operation, a combination of electric and hybrid power called automatic, and also a hybrid-only mode for preserving battery range for later all-electric use. The rear electric motor can supply up to about 55 hp to the rear wheels based on the available traction and other factors. This setup makes the RAV4 Prime’s AWD system one that enables all-road and all-weather traction. In addition, the RAV4 Prime can be used on trails for some light off-road operation."   https://www.torquenews.com/1083/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-s-all-wheel-drive-system-explained   PROTERRA INTRODUCES NEW CUSTOMIZABLE BATTERY PACK FOR OEMS "Electric bus manufacturer Proterra expanded its battery pack offer for heavy-duty commercial vehicles (like school buses, coach buses, delivery vans, and other electric vehicles) by new, narrower H Series, which will fit into standard truck frame rails and increase packaging flexibility, compared to S Series." according to InsideEVs: " Depending on application, OEMs can customize and scale up the systems up to 6 MWh. Randy Pobst, an amazing racer not just in Pikes Peak International Hill Climb even called him at 3 A.M., do we know why? Was it a butt dial? We will never know. This is just one of his many stories. Also, there's some great advice for automotive photographers.

Jen, Vicki, and Bill review how the NASA Great Lakes HPDE event at PittRace went last weekend.  It is our team's most anticipated HPDE event of the year and we were not disappointed.  Jennifer had our friend Chris as her instructor for the entire weekend and it showed as she progressed dramatically through the event in her ND Miata.  Vicki was also in HPDE 1 with another friend Jim as her student partner and also learned a ton, especially related to weight transfer in her NB Miata.  Bill was in the HPDE 2 group with both Chrissy and Jeff in the E36 race car and the stock Toyota 86 for this weekend.  With COVID 19 controls in place, there was no right seat driving instruction option, but NASA Great Lakes is continually learning, adapting, and responding with improvements that allow for a great amount of instruction for every student.   The Dominating with Dawson segment for this episode was initially in the area of coasting but we quickly wandered off into proper use and application of the throttle and aspects of controlled or over controlled track driving as opposed to pushing the limit and getting out of a comfort zone.   We hope you enjoy the episode!   Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast   and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  Our group of 7 brought 7 cars with us and Chris did his best Randy Pobst impersonation by driving almost every one of them during the weekend. 2)  Our teams struggle with car preparation and timing continued and we agree they must be addressed going forward. 3)  Jen, Vicki, and Bill all had goals going into the event, largely as we discussed after our last HPDE at GingerMan several weeks ago. 4)  Track learning/prep is very important to allow us to focus on our driving and not be distracted by "learning" the track at the same time for a new to us track 5)  We discuss the Saturday event and the Sunday event and how we did not prepare our meals as well as normally because we were way behind.  Sorry to our camp sharing friends. 6)  Vicki converts Jen's RV sink into a disposal, for a short time. 7)  We compare and contrast HPDE 1 and HPDE 2 from this event. 8)  We individually cover the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from the event 9)  Vicki "surveyed" the track extensively after turn 10 during her spin on Saturday.  Vicki did get to wave to Jennifer as she drove by a bit later. 10)  Chrissy, Vicki, and Chris encountered a handling issue on the NB Miata that was easily fixed by adjusting the adjustable shocks in the rear.  Who knew?  PS We are sorry for not listening to you earlier Chrissy. 11)  Jen solved her downshifting issue going into a turn that has plagued her to this point.  This was solved by slowing down by letting out the clutch, especially on track.  The best part is that Jennifer can also practice this on the street during her daily driving. 12)  Jennifer failed miserably by not getting her training partner over to our podcast.  Lol. 13)  We learned a lot from this event both about our prep and our driving. 14)  Bill admits we have too many cars and need to downsize significantly. 15)  Vicki summarizes our teams learning and progress to this point. 16)  Vicki's "ah ha" moment included understanding weight transfer and improving her down shifting/sequencing going into turns.  Hopefully, this will help when she races a front wheel drive car again. 17)  Jennifer's "ah ha" moment included shifting and especially downshifting and actually her hearing tires "sing" through the turns for the first time ever on track. 18)  Bill's "ah ha" moments included 1) Bringing Lemons "skills" and HPDE "skills" together into a complimentary driving style utilizing both, 2) Comparison and E36 race car and the Toyota 86 street car, and 3) How significant the difference between sticker tires and scuffed tires.  We won't be sending any of our newer drivers out on track with sticker tires ever. 19)  Vicki did not get out onto the track in the E36 BMW race car due to an accident in the prior session closing the track on Sunday prematurely. 20)  Some of the advantages of lead follow and some of the difficulties we saw.  NASA Great Lakes addressed these by actually switching the lead follow to what is essentially a switch of the cars into a "follow - Lead" where the student is in front of the instructor at several points. 21)  Goals for our next HPDE event for each of us.

Cathy joins us on the podcast again to talk about the first ever Lucky Dog endurance race on the east coast that will take place in 4 weeks at Charlotte Motor Speedway on their Roval and we will be under the lights!  There is no way we would miss this race and it will likely be our teams only wheel to wheel race this season.  Cathy discussed how the Lucky Dog season has gone this year and what updates to the race procedures that they adopted to assist with COVID 19 compliance.  If you haven't been to Lucky Dog race yet, this may be a great opportunity.  There are still a few spots left to enter a car and there may be seats available on their website under the "Dog Pile" area.  We simply cannot wait. Dominating with Dawson covers the term throttle steering and helps us to understand what it means and how it can be used on track to add a little more to your driving repertoire. We hope you enjoy the episode! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  Cathy's history at the Charlotte Motor Speedway 2)  How COVID 19 has changes the Lucky Dog paddock procedures and how everything is still very fluid and changes day to day and especially track to track 3)  Changes that have been tried so far include no pitting on pit row, requiring a face mask or a racing helmet at all times, limited track access for kids and spectators/visitors. 4)  The details of the Charlotte race include over 18 hours of racing, The BBQ event is still a go for Saturday evening, and a 10-hour race Sunday. 5)  There is over $10,000 in prizes and awards available during the weekend, not counting the $10,000 in watches from Rebel Watches (We Are Rebels!) and the $3,000 d in tires from Hankook tires, hopefully our much preferred RS-4's. 6)  We may be able to debut the new 196 Honda Civic is all goes well with the prep and cage. 7)  Attendees will include traditional west coast Lucky Dog entries as well as many east coast and midwest teams. 8)  Horse trading seats as a way of trying new tracks and events 9)  Potential tracks that may appear on the 2021 Lucky Dog schedule. 10)  How Lucky Dog works with a flexible qualifying model to balance competitiveness and still allow for new and experienced drivers in a single event. 11)  Randy Pobst will be racing his Volvo at the Charlotte event.  He will be much faster than we are. 12)  The mystery of the Fuss Fantom E46 continues. 13)  Greg and Bill may have similar car buying issues.  But on the bright side, Bill may have solved a race car solution for both coasts.  Greg, call us. 14)  Bill is confused between goats and sheep and everyone is confused with Lucky Dog racing and racing dogs.

Today's episode is with Randy Pobst. If by some off chance you dont know who Randy is, he is a statesman in the automotive community, he is thoughtful and educated on the business of racing. If you have ever read his articles in Motortend you know he is not afraid to tell you what he thinks. (even if you don't like it) In this episode we talk about the arch of his racing career, Wagons keep coming up and why you better be good at late-breaking. Side note; through a series of events I had to record this from the hi-tech office and you are going to hear noise in the background from the shop, and I did not have a good mic, so my sound quality is poor. But you can’t get a guy as fun as randy you don't really want to reschedule. Randy drive fast out there, just not as fast as me (I’m winking at you randy)

Randy Pobst is a well known professional racing driver for many series, organizations, and manufacturers including the testing driver for Motor Trend on the endlessly entertaining “Head to Head series” for many years.  During this interview, we cover a good amount of Randy’s extensive racing history as well as many other topics including our Lucky Dog Honda race car and front wheel drive car setups in general. Unfortunately, we missed a great discussion on the importance of tires due to a microphone failure.  Tires are the first thing Randy recommends toward improving your track performance, followed by brakes, then reliability improvements.  We also took this opportunity to discuss with Randy what he would recommend in terms of driver improvement, including key driving skills, weight transfer, and controlling the weight management.  He offered many insights during our talk, but one we had not applied yet was to “Think power out of a corner, brake into a corner and then roll onto the power to go fast”. We were in the pit area with a lot of background noises, as well as one microphone failure until about 24 minutes in, when we were able to fix one of the microphones so please bear with us, some of this information is incredibly valuable.  We apologize for the higher background/hiss than we would have liked.  We hope you enjoy the episode.  Randy is a great driver, but an even better person.  We would love to have him on again at any point.

Alan, Jennifer, Vicki, and Bill with a few drop ins cover our race weekend with the Lucky Dog Series at Portland International Raceway.  It starts with a review of practice Saturday morning, then our 7-hour endurance race Saturday and our work to get back out late Sunday.  We compare Lucky Dog to our home series the 24 Hours of Lemons.  While similar, there are differences, pluses and minuses for each, so we compare the two in the continual pursuit of the perfect low budget amateur endurance car racing. There were a ton of great teams there, most of which passed us on Saturday as we were towards the slower end of the field.  We recorded this shortly after we completed Sunday so there is a bit of echo since we were in the pit. However, we did manage to give out our team awards for the weekend.   Racing Results for those who are keeping track at home:  Saturday:  We were in 37th place when our engine went away Saturday and ended up at 41st for the day.  We did not get to participate in the 2 Saturday endures due to the engine issue.  Our fastest lap was 1:38.664 by our guest driver Randy Pobst, but we managed to 1:45.870 as our internal team best.  (Randy was able to get to 48th fastest lap of the day and Alan’s time would have placed us as the second slowest car in the 60 car field that ran a lap Saturday ) Sunday:  We ended up getting on track after a long day of engine swapping and rebuilding and finished 3 laps and ended up finishing around 48th out of the 64 cars this weekend and 48th fastest of the 48 cars that ran on Sunday.  Fastest lap of the race weekend was 1:29.932 by Blue Bayou for reference to the relative performance to the field.   We came, we saw, we were conquered.
