Ep42 How to reflect on, and review your year in business (and life)

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 12, 2018 14:42

Happy Healthy Entrepreneur is all about teaching business owners how to make the most of their mental health and wellbeing, so that they have all the emotional resources they need to have a happy, fulfilling and profitable business. This week’s podcast is the last one of 2018, and so I’m going to do something slightly different. Please do not drive whilst listening to this one! Instead, wait until you are home in a nice calm space with a notepad and pen, perhaps some nice relaxing music on. In other words it needs your full attention in order to get the most from it. Last year, I led a workshop for Cambridge Business Women to help them get reflective about the year they’d just had and it received some really good feedback - so I’m going to share that same talk with you in this podcast. The reason I think it works so well is that, quite often we become conditioned in our businesses to focus on striving for more, it’s all about getting ‘there’, quite often we seem to put the spotlight on what we haven’t achieved, rather than all that we have. This is about putting the spotlight on what we have achieved, and celebrating that! So I invite you to put your logical, rational thinking to one side and allow that more creative, reflective part of you to emerge so that you can get the most out of it. What you’ll find is by going through this process, it will help you access a helpful, resourceful and creative state of mind, in order move gently into 2019, feeling grounded, centred and focused. Also...The Effortless Path to Success is now OPEN for enrolment - don't miss out on the early bird price which runs out on Friday 11th January 2019. Would you like to be much more consistent when it comes to creating content? As a mindset coach to entrepreneurs and small business owners, the conversation I frequently hear is this: "I know I should be writing blogs/recording videos/being more active on social media, but I just can't seem to get going with it. Help!" The good news is, everyone has the ability to 'get going' with it, but when you're not there yet, it feels incredibly frustrating (and worrying), because if there's one thing we all know as creators of our own income, money comes when we get visible to people. In this podcast, I am going to address what gets in the way when it comes to creating and sharing content online. This podcast is brought to you by www.sarahswanton.com

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2018 16:37

Do you wake up in the morning feeling exhausted, even though you went to bed at a reasonable time? Then you find yourself mentally calculating how many hours you’ve had, telling yourself tonight will be an early night? Waking up feeling tired before the day’s even started has to be one of the most frustrating things. The motivation isn’t there to get things done, the urge for sugar and carbs is high, and you feel like you’re in go-slow mode. No one sees the best of us on those days. But what if it’s beginning to feel like that every day? Is there another way to stop feeling so tired, without having to go to bed at 8.30 pm or 9 pm every night? This week's podcast will give you a deeper understanding of what's going on 'behind the scenes' and help shed some light on why you've been feeling so tired in the morning up to now.  In listening, you'll find yourself realising so much about what was causing it, and most importantly what's going to be your best bet when it comes to getting a deeper, more restful nights sleep. And whilst relaxing baths, switching all screens off two hours before bedtime, and lavender spray on your pillow *can* aid sleep, this podcast is not about that. The Happy Healthy Entrepreneur podcast is all about supporting entrepreneurs, from all walks of life and at all stages in this business, who’ve had enough of the work all hours, keep striving for more – messages out there, and are really looking (searching even) for a fresh, new way of approaching their business, and life (we can’t separate the two), so they can get back to that feeling they had in mind, all along really, when they decided to venture into self-employment. If there’s one thing that I hope for in these podcasts, it’s to help you have the realisation that you don’t need to do anywhere near as much thinking, worrying, and busying yourself as much as you think you do – and that can have an incredible impact on the life that you live, both inside and out. This week’s topic is entitled Thoughts are Not a Call To Action, and this is something I am seeing for myself more and more over the past 18 months since coming across this inside out understanding, which forms the basis of the work I do with groups and individuals in my coaching work – and I really wanted to share it with you too, because maybe as you listen to this, you’ll see something, hear something or catch a glimpse of what I’m saying here, that really helps you out too… This podcast is brought to you by www.sarahswanton.com

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2018 26:17

For far too long now, the feelings of 'imposter syndrome' has hoodwinked many brilliant and talented people into believing they are frauds and do not deserve to occupy the place they have reached in life as well as business. ...and what a shame!  That said, the feelings of 'imposter' are so incredibly believable and compelling that when people experience them, it's no wonder they pay attention and act on those feelings - often either by retreating into the darkness or stepping on to the wheel of fighting it by engaging in more study, more learning, and working harder than most. As sustainable and sensible strategies go, it doesn't help business growth and tends to leave one feeling frustrated and burned out.  So, what to do about it? Because if it's hoodwinking up to 70% of human beings who walk this planet, then that's a lot of tired and dissatisfied people!  On The Happy Healthy Entrepreneur podcast this week, I seek to shine a light on helping people understand the truth behind what's really going on when it comes to experiencing those imposter feelings, so that you not just see through it, but that it doesn't have as much 'hold' over you as it might have done up to now.  This podcast episode is brought to you by Sarah Swanton of www.happyhealthyentrepreneur.com

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2018 26:01

World Mental Health Day is on 10th October, so I thought it would be useful to speak about the topic of burnout in entrepreneurs. I want to help raise some awareness around what it is, how to recognize it, and most importantly, what to do about it so it doesn’t keep showing up again and again. Because if there’s one thing I know for sure, trying to run a business whilst dealing with burnout, is not an enjoyable way to spend your days and the good news is, it doesn’t have to be like that. Burnout is not an inevitable part of being in business for yourself, it really isn't. And if you get the sense that the way you’re working isn’t working, then come join me for a group coaching programme I have designed to address just that. If you’ve reached a point where the hustle, bustle and hard work is grinding you down, then come join us. We start on 8th October for six weeks, and be open and curious to the idea that there is another way of being in business and life that feels lighter, easier, more doable, more effortless. And guess what? When you feel happier, healthier, your business benefits too. It just does, by default. Enrolment closes on Friday 5th October at 12noon, so get yourself booked on if you fancy it – go to happyhealthyentrepreneur.com/effortless. And if you’re listening to this after that date, I plan to run this again in the Spring so you haven’t missed out completely. Helen Rebello, is the founder of The Tranquil Path, which is all about empowering soulful female entrepreneurs, whose work no longer lights them up, to move towards living & working in a way that feeds their soul, expresses who they came here to be, and impacts positively upon the world - without selling their soul to busyness! Very often referred to by her clients as the Queen of Mellow because she takes them from chaos to calm. How lovely is that? When I asked Helen what three words sum up her entrepreneurial journey so far she said: Enlightening. Accidental. Liberating. What you’ll learn by listening to this episode: How Helen left behind a practice which she had built up for 13 years, to move to the countryside and it was the best decision she ever made. A very healthy appreciation of life is what keeps Helen going each day, which isn't to say that she doesn't get derailed at times! Showing up and being seen and sharing her truth and even speaking from my heart, because we are not taught to do that has been her biggest challenges. The marketing and business learning has come later on in her business as she switched from an offline to an online business. Helen's number one practice for keeping her grounded is meditation, which didn't come easily but is now a daily habit. Investing in her own personal development is the best decision Helen has ever made because her life and work are completely intertwined. I think the idea of having a five-year plan is good, but actually, it can come with huge disappointment too because life has a funny way of not quite going to your five-year plan” I’m delighted to welcome Berenice Smith is this week’s guest on the Happy Healthy Entrepreneur Podcast. Berenice is an award-winning, postgraduate qualified designer and creative, working with start-up companies, sole traders, charities and businesses who need solutions to design, or creative direction. Berenice provides a proactive solution, helping with print, web, brands, and eBooks so they learn from her work and then go to deliver a better product or service. Berenice is also the founder and creator of Walk In Our Shoes, where she collaborates with counsellors, writers, bloggers and inspirational men and women who have stories and skills to share with people who are childless, involuntarily. She connects this community through a social design site which helps them to feel less isolated and be able to see a future that is manageable…and it also provides a much-needed space for educating family and friends through these honest and real-life experiences that these people share. When I asked Berenice what three words sum up her entrepreneurial journey so far she said: Flexible. Opportunities. Friendships. What you’ll learn by listening to this episode: How Berenice turned an incredibly challenging experience in her life (6 rounds of IVF) towards founding Walk In Our Shoes, support, and community for couples who are like her, involuntarily childless; Having a part-time job, combined with her creative design agency, and the Walk In Our Shoes Project has been the perfect balance for carving out her self-employment career and don’t let anyone tell you that maintaining a part-time time isn’t doing it ‘properly’ – it’s what works for you; Reaching out and talking to people has been incredibly helpful both in self-employment, and continuing to find her way through involuntary loss, particularly when she hears phrases like ‘Mumpreneur’ which can be very triggering; Being honest and real about who you are, and not trying to ‘mask’ it with ‘over professionalism’, helps to attract the right clients. The professionalism comes out in the work that you ‘do’ not in ‘who’ you are as a person. Be unapologetically yourself and the right people will be attracted to you; It’s OK to walk away from business, and if it’s really not working, one of you has to say “I’m sorry this isn’t going to work”; Imposter syndrome can often show up, but it’s about sticking with your plan and not getting too sidetracked by social media and comparing yourself to others; Being helpful on Facebook Groups, and getting a name for yourself as being knowledgeable, and reliable, can sometimes lead to creating new clients that way. Nicola has been a solo-entrepreneur now, for 5 years. Nicola helps women business owners to create calm from chaos, by teaching them the skills and giving them the tools required to focus on what matters in their business and their life. When I asked Nicola what three words sum up her entrepreneurial journey so far she said: Exhilarating. Winding (as in road!). Insightful. What you’ll learn by listening to this episode: How it can feel like every business idea we have, has already been done - but it is not a reason not to do it; There is no such thing as an original business idea, but what makes it unique is your own personality and your own spin on it!; We are never short of ideas, but what sets someone apart is their ability to implement a project all the way through to completion; How freedom to be your own boss is both a perk and a curse - stay focused on revenue generation; There is a fine line between giving away good quality content and a level of value for free, but at some point, you need to get something in return; The curse of comparisonitis. How moving out of that mindset, is essential in order to build a business that is right for you and your sanity; Don't get sucked in by the marketing messages out there of "you must invest in your business!" we don't need anywhere near the number of online courses we sign up to. If you are going to invest in things, make sure the format is right for you; Your network is everything. And don't wait for things to happen!” I'm delighted to welcome Darren Lawrence as this week's guest on The Happy Healthy Entrepreneur Podcast, a recently new business buddy of mine so it was a so great to catch up with him in this way. Darren is an independent consultant specialising in the sports industry; so to give you some background, Darren left The Football Association after 11 years, last year, and has just passed his first anniversary as Darren Lawrence Coaching & Consulting. He has made the smart move of continuing to develop his niche in sport and has undertaken a number of projects this year (data analysis, strategy development, research, facility development, and event management) working with clients that include Governing Bodies of Sport (such as England Squash and The FA), Sport England and County Sports Partnerships (including Living Sport who cover Cambridgeshire and Peterborough). All so, without having to do crazy amounts of marketing, because he could draw upon his network. A big fan of learning and development, Darren is also close to completing his Diploma in Personal Performance Coaching, a qualification through The Coaching Academy, which will be another skill to add to his toolkit, and is already utilising it in working with individuals and organisations. So when I asked Darren to reflect on the three words that best describe his entrepreneurial journey over the past 12 months, he said: Brave, Exploratory, and Proud. What you’ll learn by listening to this episode: The first few months of self-employment were difficult in terms of not knowing how and when it would 'happen', and how trusting in his skills and experience played a key part in this (just six months later, he would have too much work on!); The constant 'balancing act' of doing the work and also generating new work has been a learning curve; To take advantage of the quieter times in business, to rest and replenish energy levels up again, before getting ready for the next push, because unexpectedly work comes in and then you're busy again; Three things that keep Darren 'sane' are listening to music, running every other day helps with keeping a clear head, and staying connected to the 'outside world'; Being self-employed means you have to be proactive in building your network, and being available to support and help others so that it comes back to you; How the self-limiting belief "I'm not good with change" has been proven wrong during the first year of self-employment through all the things he's been able to achieve and accomplish; Things can't be perfect all the time 'progress, not perfection' it's about moving forward one step at a time. So Matthew Long is this week's guest on the podcast, and his business is Matt Long Massage based in the market town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. As business owners, I wonder whether we ask enough sometimes, and I think Matt is a great example of someone who does ask, and what opens up when you do. A former RAF serviceman of 22 years, this is Matt's second career which he became interested in after receiving some fantastic treatment himself, so much so, that he asked his massage therapist exactly what qualifications he had, and enrolled at the very same training school! Matt first went self-employed in January 2016, and then moved to Bury St Edmunds in December 2016. Since then, he's created a busy practice, attracting on average 5 new clients a week, and you'll notice Matt is really generous about sharing exactly how he has done that. He demonstrates there is no mystery behind marketing, just a commitment to regular consistent action most days, no matter how busy you are! Three words that sum up what the entrepreneurial journey has been for Matt so far are: “Scary. Exciting. Challenging” What you’ll learn by listening to this episode: How part of what it takes to build a business is about trial and error and that's OK because it's part of the journey. How gently raising his prices, actually attracted more clients for Matt and what that taught him. Having a fearlessness about asking clients for feedback and their opinions have been key to developing his business. The boundaries that Matt puts around his weekends, and valued time with his family. How having a regular coffee meet up with other therapist friends and health practitioners, is an essential part of recharging the batteries. Through being in the habit of regularly asking for help, advice, referrals, and testimonials has served him incredibly well and contributed to building a business quickly, and efficiently. "You have strengths and you have emotional resilience, and you have unique skill sets that you can use within your business, so put those to use, and don't move the goal posts along the way.” (Louise Moles, Thrive with Louise) If you're in need of a pep talk this week, then this is it!  This week on the podcast, I'm in conversation with Louise Moles of Thrive With Louise. Louise teaches people how to thrive, with a psychological training course, called The Thrive Programme, created by Rob Kelly. Louise has established a speciality in working with Emetophobia clients, helping them to Thrive and overcome their extreme fear of vomiting.  Louise has been running her therapy practice since 2015, so still relatively new to self-employment, she was able to draw on a lot of early days experiences which you'll realise are useful to remember at any stage of your business. We talked about self-belief, resilience, and the most effective way for taking action.  Three words that sum up what the entrepreneurial journey has meant to Louise so far are: “Empowering, Self Discovery, and PACE” What you’ll learn by listening to this episode: "Being on this entrepreneurial journey - I never considered it an option" how a simple recommendation from a friend to seek help for anxiety led her on a journey that has literally changed her life on all levels.  How important it has been for Louise to pace herself right from the start with consistent and continuous effort, and how this has served her extremely well since then.  That the entrepreneurial journey has not been without challenges, but her approach to that is to believe in her own resilience.  How Louise is able to take time out from her business, and not think about work, and the beliefs she has around this, that allow her to do that.  How procrastination and putting things off just doesn't get a look in now, and the advice she has around tackling that.  Recommendations and Resources: Rob Kelly and The Thrive Programme Twitter chat that Louise runs, Wed fortnightly using the #ThiveChat and #CambridgeThrive Where you can learn more about Louise Moles: http://www.thrivewithlouise.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/CambridgeThrive/ https://twitter.com/CambridgeThrive https://www.youtube.com/user/ThriveProgramme Enjoy! "I love being part of this growing movement of support, collaboration and co-operation. I call it the 'new paradigm of business' where it's not about competition, it's about championing each other, and celebrating that. That's what works best for the planet, not just me as an individual, that's what works best for all of us." (Linda Anderson, Tap Into Your Success) This week on the podcast, I go into conversation with Linda Anderson of www.TapIntoYourSuccess.co.uk Linda is an EFT Tapping Coach, and very often is referred to by her clients as a Mindset Magician. She teaches heart-centred business owners how to get over: self doubt, the fear of being seen, and the fear of charging their full worth, which means they can then go on to market themselves so much more boldly, create more clients, and make an even bigger difference in the world doing what they love, rather than just getting a job to pay the bills. Linda has been running TIYS for 14 years, so like Melanie Mackie's interview last week, it was great to hear her wisdom and insights when it comes to her experiences of being an entrepreneur during that time. We talked about overcoming inner resistance, self-confidence, and doing the work you really (really) want to be doing. Three words that sum up what the entrepreneurial journey has meant to Linda so far are: "Procrastination, Fear and Growth" What you'll learn by listening to this episode: - What a transformational impact it had on Linda and her business, when she went from 'people pleasing' to listening to her own voice, and deciding to act on that instead. - The huge lightbulb moment she had, when asked one simple question by her coach.  - How Linda went from being stuck in a feast & famine cycle to being in a place where now, she is generally booked up for two months in advance. - What self-care looks like for Linda, and how fresh air and getting on her bike is key to recharging her batteries every day. - The importance of finding the right networking communities that connect you to your tribe of people. - How thinking that just being very good at what you do is a bit like trying to fly with one wing, and how learning the sales and marketing piece changed everything. Recommendations and Resources: During our conversation, Linda refers to two business coaches who each helped her make incredible progress in her business, they are: www.CatherineWatkin.com Corrina Gordon Barnes (n/b Corrina has since moved her focus from teaching business and marketing, towards the work that she does now which is relationship coaching. However her website www.YouInspireMe.co.uk is still available, and on there you'll find a treasure trove of information when it comes to learning all about authentic marketing. Melanie Mackie is the Social Stylist and Founder at Scarletta Media; she works with female entrepreneurs and petite businesses to support and encourage them to powerfully show up online, speak their authentic truth, share their wisdom and expertise - to create and establish their unique social style and living brands. Melanie has been self-employed for 8 years, so it was great to hear her wisdom and insights when it comes to her experiences of being an entrepreneur during that time. Three words Melanie uses to describe her entrepreneurial journey so far are: Life changing, transformational, and enlightening. What you'll learn by listening to this episode: - How Melanie took a huge leap of faith by leaving the corporate world to explore working for herself, and how “let’s just see how this goes” has served her very well. - Having a 100% virtual online business, for her, was not what it was cracked up to be, and the realization of how much she enjoyed 1:1 interaction, inspired her to change that. - Being in a mastermind is one of the best business decisions she has ever made, and why. - How trusting her intuition in making business and marketing decisions has been really helpful in getting her to where she is today. - The importance of self-compassion, and stopping to celebrate those successes along the way. - Finally, we discuss the topic of social media and self-validation, and where our feelings of validation actually come from. It's here....! The first ever episode of the Happy Healthy Entrepreneur Podcast. Woo hoo! My very first podcast guest this week is...Lucy Payne, who went self-employed pretty much 12 months ago at the time of recording, so it was great to reflect on her first year in business. My goodness, we talked about all sorts of topics including self-confidence, networking, imposter syndrome, business buddies, and being an introvert entrepreneur. The three words Lucy uses to describe her entrepreneurial journey so far are: enlightening, isolating, and exciting. What you'll learn by listening to this episode - Why Lucy values rewarding herself with a day off so highly, and how she is able to do so without feeling guilty. - How she responds when she is 'shoulding' all over herself. - We muse on Imposter Syndrome and just how common it is for both employed and self-employed folk. - How networking has turned out to be one of the best things Lucy has done, despite bursting into tears at her very first networking event (and how that didn't stop her from returning). - How business buddies have been the perfect antidote to self-employment isolation. - Finally, we talk about what it means to be an introvert entrepreneur, and how recognising that within herself has helped her to manage her energy levels.
