Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” *Transcription* Music: (0:00 – 0:08) Laura Dugger: (0:09 - 1:53) Welcome to The Savvy Sauce, where we have practical chats for intentional living. In her warm and welcoming way, she's going to share about parenting from a biblical perspective and give us practical steps to take to ensure as parents, we are leaders of the home and not followers of our children. Here's our chat. Welcome back to The Savvy Sauce, Arlene. Arlene Pellicane: (1:54 - 1:55) It's great to be with you again. How fun. Laura Dugger: (1:55 - 2:02) Well, in case our friends listening didn't hear your first episode, can you just catch us up on who you are and what you do? Arlene Pellicane: (2:03 - 2:30) Sure. We talked about growing up social, raising relational kids in a screen-driven world. So, I just try to help families get a hold of that technology, so it doesn't take over your house. And so, I speak and write books. My books include 31 Days to a Happy Husband, Growing Up Social, and 31 Days to Becoming a Happy Mom. I have three kids. My husband, James, and I have been married for 21 years. And our kids are now in high school, junior high, and elementary school. And they go boy, girl, girl. Laura Dugger: (2:31 - 2:39) And let's even go one step further and go back a little bit in your history. What type of home were you raised in? Arlene Pellicane: (2:41 - 3:25) I am an only child. So, my husband would say he's the last of four that I was raised in a very spoiled home. That's what he would say. So, I was the only child. I had cousins who lived in the same neighborhood. So that was really nice. So I never felt lonely. And apparently I didn't ask my parents for a sibling. So, they were like, okay, we're happy with one. We'll just keep it this way. And so, I had cousins that were very close in age to me in the neighborhood that I played with. And so, I had a very happy childhood and a good childhood. I will say my sweet mom, she's so funny. She's super social. She just loves people. So, I was always the kid that was waiting on the curb like, please, mom, come pick me up. Because she was probably talking to someone and couldn't get me soon enough. Laura Dugger: (3:26 - 3:34) That's amazing. Have you carried on that style now that you're raising your own family? Or have you chosen to do some things differently? Arlene Pellicane: (3:34 - 4:50) I think a lot of the ways I parent are very much like how my mom and dad were. My mom and dad were very open, very relational, talking, hugging, and involved in what I did. I was a cheerleader. And if I came home, she'd be awake with hot chocolate at midnight after a game. Or something like that. So, I think that idea of being relational. And there were rules and there were boundaries. But it was a very relational home. I think we definitely have that. And my home was very joyful. And we try to make our home very joyful. So probably the most distinctive difference is the way we handle chores and just being tougher. My mom and dad and I were caterers. Like, oh, if you need something, we'll do that for you. Where my husband is like, uh-uh. You can do that yourself. And I think that's good. Because the first time I did laundry was in college. I mean, that's pretty late. I remember being in college and thinking, what in the world do I do with this quarter and this laundry? I have no idea. And so, my husband has helped us to instill that the kids, you know, as soon as, like, my youngest is in fifth grade. But even by second or third grade, she was doing her own laundry. So, I think that's good. My husband has helped us to see that learning how to do chores at a young age is a positive thing. Laura Dugger: (4:50 - 5:14) I think it's just so interesting to hear because we all have a different approach. So I love hearing both of those stories. And now you're also a working mom. And I know that some of our listeners have mentioned how grateful they are to hear from fellow Christians who have chosen to work while also raising their children. So, has this been natural for you or was it a struggle at times? Arlene Pellicane: (5:15 - 6:18) Yeah. And I have to say, you know, I am a working mom with a lot of flexibility because I speak and I write. But my schedule is at home, and I am my own boss. So, I can say to myself, oh, let's go to the field trip. You know, I can do those kinds of things where I know many moms who are working these overnight shifts and they are crazy busy. And so, in that sense, I feel like if I say, oh, it's been easy, you know, it's been OK, that's kind of why. Because I haven't been forced to do these crazy hours. So, if you are listening right now and you're like, I am so sleepy because I've been working so hard, my heart goes goes to you. So, this has been a wonderful mix just for me personally, because I have the flexibility to be available for my kids. But it gives me a purpose that's outside of my children that I really enjoy. And it's kind of cool because since I write about marriage and the family and parenting, it keeps me in my space. So, I'm kind of constantly getting to have stories for my own work. So it's it's been quite ideal. I love it. Laura Dugger: (6:19 - 6:26) So is there any scripture or clarity from the Lord that helped affirm you in both of those roles? Arlene Pellicane: (6:27 - 7:36) Yeah, you know, I think of Proverbs three of trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. And so, as we're trusting in God, not leaning on our understanding and we're seeing like he will make your path straight. And so, I have seen that over and over and over again to simply trust. And it really is, you know, for me, it's being a speaker and an author. And I know some of you who are listening, that's something that you desire to do. But whether it's that or something else, you know, we live in a culture where you're supposed to be a celebrity, like you're supposed to amass numbers and have platforms and do all these things. And I think when you get to the point where it's like, you know, I want influence, I want impact, I want to help people. But I don't care if I help them with two followers or with 16, you know what I mean? Like not being into all those kinds of things. And I think when we turn our hearts to saying with our work, God, let your will be done in this. God be magnified in this Lord, just whatever I can do, multiply it. God will do that and be obedient that that's what's most important, not necessarily the Instagram followers, etc. So set your heart on God and the other things will fall into place. Laura Dugger: (7:36 - 7:46) And like you said, in your work, you do write about family and parenting. So how can parents lead the home rather than children? Arlene Pellicane: (7:47 - 10:36) This is so important, right? And it used to be that the home of yesterday might have been like, children are seen but not heard. But today it's backward. It's like parents are seen but not heard. It's like people talking are the children. And so, watch your language. You know, how do you talk to your children? Do you talk in a way that is like a leader or are you asking them questions all the time? So, I notice this about myself. So, for instance, that after you say something, you would say, okay, like, it's time to go come to dinner. Okay. Like it's a question, right? Not an instruction. Or why don't you wear this shirt? Okay. So, we, especially as moms, do this all the time. And if we don't tack the word, okay, on our voices still go up. Like we'll say, why don't you pick that one? Isn't that a good idea? Like we're constantly like our voices go up in the question. So, part of leadership is even just listening to yourself. How am I communicating? And I love what John Roseman, the psychologist says is communicate your instruction using the least amount of words possible. So, it's go to the car. That's a leader, right? You're just telling your child, go to the car. But we say, okay, it's time to go to grandma's house. And you know, we don't want to be late. So, let's start zipping up your jacket and let's go. Okay, it's time to go. Are you not ready to go? Get your shoes on. Okay, you got your shoes. That's so good. You got your shoes. Get in the car. Right? So, it's like all we need to say was get in the car. So, I love that. So just even assess how do you communicate to your children? Because your children are hearing all these things. And so, they just hear like this lovely paragraph. They missed go to the car. So, assess how you talk. Use fewer words. Don't make everything a question. And all of this, of course, stems from the idea, the realization that, wait a minute, I'm the leader in the home, not my child. So many people will say, well, my child won't let me do that. Right? Like we ride bikes in our neighborhood. And my son, when he was in second grade, had a really bad accident involving him and a truck. And went to the hospital and was fine because of the grace of God and because he was wearing a helmet. And so, we'll see kids in the neighborhood without helmets. And my husband said to the dad, “You know, just last week, my son was hit by a car on this very street. It's really important that your kids wear a helmet. And the father said, oh, I just can't get my kids to do it. So, this is the problem of, wait, who is the leader here? Is the child the leader or is the parent the leader? So, you've got to see, first of all, in scripture, it is children obey your parents and not the other way around. So, we've got to just embrace that with all of our heart. Laura Dugger: (10:37 - 11:06) That's amazing to even hear you say that, because this morning this verse just jumped off the page at me. And it's in Titus 3, verse 1. And I'm reading out of the Amplified Version. And it says, remind people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready and willing to do good. That just struck me for parenting. Like you're saying, it is biblical and it's important for us to lead. Arlene Pellicane: (11:07 - 11:49) And wow, if your kids cannot learn from you, right, if in their own home they don't have that sense of, oh, there's this healthy authority over me and I do what they say. Like if they don't have that, then look at them as they grow up. They're going to have trouble with their relationship with God. It's like, oh, God commands us to do a lot of things. And like Mary, we could say, let it be to me according to your word. I am your servant. Or like the modern person, we could be like, no way. Who are you to tell me what to do, right? So that authority, if they can get that from you as a parent, that's going to help them with their spouse, with their employer, with a police officer, with a teacher, with God. It just helps them in all those relationships. Laura Dugger: (11:50 - 12:03) And I'm so grateful for people like you who are writing parenting books. And so, I want to know, how did you arrive at your eight strategies in one of your recent books titled Parents Rising? Arlene Pellicane: (12:04 - 12:59) Yeah, a lot of it was what I was observing. Like what was I seeing with my children, with their friends in the elementary school, et cetera, our pediatrician and talking to other doctors, asking them like, what are you seeing? Because something my pediatrician said really struck me. She's like, Arlene, a lot of times I'm not talking about physical things anymore. Like this is a pediatrician, right? It's not so much about shots and growth and all this. It's how can I manage my child? They're so emotional. They're under distress. They have anxiety. They're on video games all the time. So just listening to what she was saying of what are parents coming to her and saying, this is my problem, you know, and she's been a pediatrician for 25 years and has talked about, wow, in the last 10 years, all these problems because of technology, they're just enormous. So, listening to people's input led to these eight strategies. Laura Dugger: (13:01 - 13:07) And you don't have to go through all of them, but could you at least touch on a few of these strategies and elaborate? Arlene Pellicane: (13:07 - 16:59) Sure. You know, you can listen to our Growing Up Social one that we did to talk about this first strategy, which is amusement is not the highest priority. But what I'll say about that is as parents, you are not the cruise director. It is not your job to make everything fun from A to Z. Now you can do that on occasion. That's good. You want to have fun. So don't get me wrong. Have fun. But you're more like a trainer, a coach. And so, a lot of times we'll just give all the technology so our kids can be amused, but your kids don't need amusement. They need character. So, they need to be building character in your home. So put amusement in its proper place so character can take shape. And that's going to be your first strategy. But I'll say a few things about strategy number four, which is the Bible and prayer are present daily. And it's just the idea that when kids see that you have a real faith, that it's not like, oh, I go to church on Sunday, but then every other day of the week I kind of look like any other home in this neighborhood. You know, like we watch the same things as our secular neighbor does. We cuss sometimes. We spend our money on stuff we don't really tithe. And again, not a guilt trip, but I'm just saying when kids see that, oh, this doesn't make this huge difference in your life. Then when they're older, it's much easier for them to stray away from that faith because it's not strongly in them. But when they see like, oh, my mom and dad, they're not perfect, but they seek God. And when they make a mistake, they ask for forgiveness of me. And when I see them get money, they give it to the missionary. And when we have extra time, we try to serve other people or invite people to church. So those kinds of things. So not just like, oh, we attend church and we're good people. But when kids see, oh, my mom's faith is real. My dad's faith is real. That's going to make an impact on them. And that's going to help them to make that decision for themselves. So, make sure that that's something that's daily. And then for prayer, I will be the first to say, I want this amazing prayer life. But just like anyone else, I can go to bed and say, oh, my word, I didn't even pray today. So, one thing that's really helped me is Moms in Prayer. And that is an international organization. And the total mission is two praying moms for every school. So that there would be two moms that would gather. And obviously there can be more to pray for their children by name and to pray for their school by name. And I started joining one of these when my son Ethan was in first grade. And now he is in 10th. And I can see such a huge difference in how God has moved in my children, in their friendships, in their school. Because every week while school's in session, I am praying with another woman for my kids by name. Like it is amazing. And I remember the very first week I did this, I joined a church group that had like one lady had college age kids. And one lady had grandkids. So, it was a really diverse group. I had the youngest kids. And we prayed. And we prayed that my son would make a Christian friend. Because we're a public school. And the very next day my son Ethan said, Mom, I was in the playground, and I heard a boy singing. And Mom, he's a Christian. And Mom, he's in my class. And I was like, Ethan, I just prayed with the moms just yesterday that you would find a Christian friend. And it's amazing. That was first grade. And just about a month ago we had that same boy over for breakfast. And I told him that story. And it was so funny. Like see how God works. So, he and my son are not close friends. They have become acquaintances over the years. But we were able to have him over. And to be able to say that story, like you can see the boys lit up like, wow, this prayer thing really works. And so, if your kids can see that the Bible and prayer is part of your normal rhythm, that you care about it, that's going to make a huge difference in their spiritual lives. Laura Dugger: (17:00 - 22:33) I would echo all of that. I think that life with Jesus is the most exciting type of life. And that's so great to hear how you incorporated it with your kids and let them in on that process. And now a brief message from our sponsor. Arlene Pellicane: (22:34 - 24:31) Another strategy number seven is love is spelled T-I-M-E, love is spelled time. It's that idea that yes, you can have quality time, but if you are not together all week and you have a half an hour of quality time only, that's not enough. You need to work on the quantity time as well. And again, one of the huge stealers is being on your phone, whether it's us, whether it's our kids. They did a survey of 6,000 kids all around the world and asked what's your parent's worst habit and 50% of them said my parent is on the phone and 34% of those people said and when we're talking in conversation, my parent will interrupt, like they will take a text while we're talking and that really bothers me. So, this idea of love is spelled T-I-M-E with time, just remember that when you're with your child, you need to have moments where there are no devices present. This doesn't mean that from the moment your child gets home from school to the moment they go to bed, you need to be staring at them and doing something. No, that's not practical. Like you have to make dinner. You have to pay your bills. We get that. But in the time in between those things, make sure there's time where maybe you're reading together. We just recently got a pool table, so we're playing pool together now. So have things in place, whether it's a frisbee or a ball, a chess game, a puzzle, where there is time that it's a regular rhythm to connect with your child, spend time together and it doesn't have to be this serious chat. You know, boys don't want to sit across the table with their mothers and have a serious chat, but a boy will play Nerf Gun Wars with you. So, like have activities so you're spending time together because in that shared activity, that's when there's an opportunity for that child to tell you something that maybe is on their heart, it's on their mind, because now there's a space to tell you. So, make sure that you are spending time with your kids. Laura Dugger: (24:32 - 24:38) Wow. Is there anything else that we haven't covered yet in our time together that you want to make sure we hear? Arlene Pellicane: (24:38 - 26:42) There are two thoughts I have. One is when you're spending that time together, research has shown that even having a phone present, so you're not touching it, it's just on the table. Like right now my phone is two feet away from me on my desk. So just having it there dilutes the conversation because they found that when people talk without it present, they feel more connected, like nothing is standing in the way between us. But when the phone is there, they know that at any moment that phone might ring, that phone might make a noise and my attention will be diverted and it dilutes the conversation. So, make sure your phones are completely not present when you are having that face-to-face time with your kids. And then the last thing I want to say is just have that mindset of strategy number eight, which is I am launching an adult, I am not babying a child. And men tend to be pretty good at this. And again, this is a generality, but women, we're more like, oh, like let me do it for you. So it's okay to let your kids grow up. And one thing my pastor says that I like very much is never do something for your child that your child can do on their own. So, something I love to do with my kids is I love to trim their nails, right? So, they're in elementary school, I'm trimming their nails, I'm trimming their nails. And my husband James would be like, honey, like they're in third, fourth grade, they can trim their own nails. And I'm like, the pinky, very tricky, the thumb, very difficult, you know? And so finally, I got to the point where it's like, okay, you know, Lucy, that's my youngest, you are responsible now for trimming your own nails and I won't do it anymore. But it's funny, like I would sneak around the house like when my husband wasn't watching and trim her nails because I just felt like I do a better job of this. And so, as moms, we need to realize someday our kids will go out of our house and they need to be able to trim their own nails. So mama, you just got to back down. So, a lot of times it's we as moms that have to back away and say, you know what? I need to let them do this on their own because they are an adult and they're going to need this skill very soon. Laura Dugger: (26:42 - 26:49) Okay, so it's don't ever do for your child what they can do for themselves. Is that the saying? Arlene Pellicane: (26:49 - 26:50) Yes, that's the saying. Laura Dugger: (26:51 - 26:56) Arlene, if people want to connect further, where can listeners find you online? Arlene Pellicane: (26:57 - 27:22) They can find me on ArlenePellicane.com and I actually have a video series that goes with this book, Parents Rising, and I've designed it for a small group or for personal use so that each message is about 20 minutes long so you could watch the message and then you could have a discussion group with moms or with parents or by yourself. And so that's at ArlenePellicane.com and you can also find me on Instagram, Facebook and my podcast is called The Happy Home Podcast. Laura Dugger: (27:23 - 27:41) Fantastic. We will link to all of these in our show notes and on our resources page of our website. We are called the Savvy Sauce because savvy is synonymous with practical knowledge or insight. And so today, Arlene, we would love to know what is your savvy sauce? Arlene Pellicane: (27:42 - 28:49) So my savvy sauce has to do with someone you have interviewed in the past, Clifford and Joyce Penner, and I interviewed them for my book 31 Days to a Happy Husband, and they talked about the 5 to 30 second kiss, the 5 to 30 second daily kiss to keep the pilot light lit between you and your spouse. So that is my savvy sauce is attempting the 5 to 30 second kiss every day. And I will tell you, you know, even I'm the author, ooh, I've been married 21 years. Wow, like we still have trouble with this so much so that my husband has literally printed out a page, put it on the refrigerator, and we put an X on every day that we do this. So, whenever we realize, well, we are not kissing regularly anymore, the chart goes up on the refrigerator and we start making Xs. And it was so funny because my daughter, my youngest, had asked like, what's that chart for? And she asked me in such a moment that I wasn't ready to make up a funny story about it. So, I just said, oh, it's a kissing chart for daddy and I. And she's just like, what? So that's our savvy sauce, the attempt of the 5 to 30 second kiss every day. Laura Dugger: (28:49 - 28:58) I love your savvy sauce. And Arlene, it is always such a pleasure to get to spend time with you and learn from you. Thank you for being my guest. Arlene Pellicane: (28:59 - 29:01) It's been my pleasure. It's been so fun. Thanks for having me. Laura Dugger: (29:02 - 32:44) One more thing before you go, have you heard the term gospel before? It simply means good news. And I want to share the best news with you, but it starts with the bad news. Every single one of us were born sinners, but Christ desires to rescue us from our sin, which is something we cannot do for ourselves. This means there's absolutely no chance we can make it to heaven on our own. So, for you and for me, it means we deserve death, and we can never pay back the sacrifice we owe to be saved. We need a savior, but God loved us so much. He made a way for his only son to willingly die in our place as the perfect substitute. This gives us hope of life forever in right relationship with him. That is good news. Jesus lived the perfect life. We could never live and died in our place for our sin. This was God's plan to make a way to reconcile with us so that God can look at us and see Jesus. We can be covered and justified through the work Jesus finished. If we choose to receive what he has done for us, Romans 10:9 says, “that if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” So, you pray with me now. Heavenly father, thank you for sending Jesus to take our place. I pray someone today right now is touched and chooses to turn their life over to you. Will you clearly guide them and help them take their next step in faith to declare you as Lord of their life? We trust you to work and change lives now for eternity. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. If you prayed that prayer, you are declaring him for me. So, me for him, you get the opportunity to live your life for him. And at this podcast, we're called The Savvy Sauce for a reason. We want to give you practical tools to implement the knowledge you have learned. So, you're ready to get started. First, tell someone, say it out loud, get a Bible. The first day I made this decision, my parents took me to Barnes and Noble and let me choose my own Bible. I selected the Quest NIV Bible and I love it. You can start by reading the book of John. Also get connected locally, which just means tell someone who's a part of a church in your community that you made a decision to follow Christ. I'm assuming they will be thrilled to talk with you about further steps such as going to church and getting connected to other believers to encourage you. We want to celebrate with you too. So, feel free to leave a comment for us here. If you did make a decision to follow Christ, we also have show notes included where you can read scripture that describes this process. And finally, be encouraged. Luke 15:10 says, “in the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” The heavens are praising with you for your decision today. And if you've already received this good news, I pray you have someone to share it with. You are loved and I look forward to meeting you here next time.

We hear the word “intentional” a lot these days and we are encouraged to live with intentionality. But we live in a world full of distractions and responsibilities that seem to choke out the ability to really choose how we live versus letting our lives dictate for us. I know that is a constant struggle for me and I find myself longing for simplicity. If that is you as well, today's episode is one you don't want to miss! Lara Casey Isaacson is a mom to three (one through the gift of adoption), a grateful wife, and a believer in the impossible. She created the PowerSheets grace-filled goal setting planner and the Write the Word journals, and she founded Southern Weddings magazine a decade ago. Lara is also the author of Make It Happen: Surrender Your Fear. Take the Leap. Live On Purpose. Today, Lara shares her fascinating story of creating multiple businesses and how that practically looked in her life, while also touching on the difficult seasons she walked through in the midst of the successes she was finding in those businesses. It was during those harder seasons that the Lord gave her a desire to truly live intentionally or “cultivate what matters” which would become a thriving business that is still growing and helping countless people get “unstuck” in life and step fully into their purpose and Godly goals for living. Currently, Lara has moved into a new season of life, stepping away from Cultivate and is living in NC, where she loves getting her hands dirty in the garden. I know that no matter where you are in your life journey, you will find this episode to be both encouraging and helpful as Lara offers some very practical tips to beginning or even continuing the process of cultivating what matters in your world and living intentionally in the place the Lord has you today. Starting a coaching business doesn't have to be challenging and overwhelming. Follow these tips for starting a coaching business that will attract your soulmate clients and not have to backtrack to get things right. If you want to start a coaching business and turn your idea into a revenue stream, follow these tips. About Lindsay Maloney Lindsay Maloney is a down-to-earth, no-fluff business coach who has a genuine approach to setting up and scaling a successful coaching business that stands out from all the rest. She doesn't believe that you have to do what everyone else does in order to be successful. Lindsay is passionate about keeping things simple. The mindset to have when you want to start a coaching business Robyn is a firm believer that God doesn't let things happen to us, he allows them to happen for us so that we can turn around and help others. For both Lindsay and Robyn this fact has been influential in their coaching businesses. Now teaching others everything they've learned along their journeys so that others can have success faster and easier. Robyn suggested that if you are struggling to discover what your niche is and who you can help, look at your journey and see how and who you can help by sharing your experiences with those who are coming along behind you. The planners Lindsay uses to keep herself organized and productive She has one that she made herself, she has The Commit 30 Planner, and she uses Asana as a digital tool, the Bando Planner, and Lara Casey's Power Sheets. Robyn emphasized how valuable this list is because one of the things that are key when starting out is being organized so that you can navigate from point A to point Z. You have an idea, now what? As a coach, you must recognize and embrace your journey and experiences to connect with your soulmate coaching clients One of the biggest mistakes people make coming into the industry is that they want to help everyone do everything. But you are not Wal-Mart and you cannot do everything for anyone. We are a tool in a toolbox, and a hammer can't do everything a wrench can do, etc. It is important to embrace what kind of tool you are and recognize how much of your journey you can take and consider it to then help others. Your journey and experiences are key to how and who you can help. It may seem boring to you, but it isn't to others and it's important. Embrace who you are and the experiences you have had that have led to the expertise you can now use to serve others. Knowing this helps you say or write the right words to connect with anyone listening to or watching you. The key is to be genuine online so that people will trust you. It is difficult to connect with and build trust with others online so it is important to be genuine to connect with your soulmate clients. Share your story and let people know who you are, even those pieces you think are boring about you. Robyn emphasized that your story is what is going to connect you to other people. Your journey and your values will connect you with others. It is very important to be aligned with your values, visions, and purpose, and all the things that have led you to where you are today so that you can connect with the people that are a good fit for you and your services. Dial into one thing that you want to focus on to serve your clients as you start a coaching business Lindsay used the example of her coaching business. She works with women who are just beginning. They don't have an email list or website, they just have an idea. This is where she comes in and teaches. Dial-in on who the person is that you want to work with. This doesn't mean you will limit opportunities. List building when you start a coaching business How will you bring people into your list? Robyn emphasized that we often don't know what they don't know. Email marketing is an example of this. It is important to be strategic with building your list. If you have a blog, what calls to action do you have. It is great to work with someone to help you identify all of the things that you need to be able to connect with your audience. Choose one platform for communicating with your audience. Is it a blog post, a podcast, etc. Choose a content medium and then a point to share. Know why people should listen to you. Make it clear for your audience so that they understand what you do for them, the problem you solve for them, and how you can solve it. You also need to know how you will be paid for the services you provide. And once people join your list, how will you take care of them and nurture them, and know that it was a good idea for them to sign up to follow you. Robyn emphasized the importance of having a website versus starting your business as a Facebook page. If you have a website, you can have a blog and the blog can become your primary source of content creation to then repurpose on other platforms, social media, email marketing, etc. She also emphasized the importance of SEO for people being able to find you. It is important to have search engine optimization for people to find you or you will be wasting your time blogging and creating a website. Tech and tools necessary to start a coaching business It is very important to know which tools are best for you. Lindsay and Robyn agreed that Click Funnels was not a fit for either of them. And you do not need to invest in shiny bells and whistles to start your coaching business. You have to use tools that feel right to you, not what other people are promoting because they are an affiliate. The tools you use need to serve you and your clients. Consider pricing, services, customer service, logistics, etc. Be sure you don't have paralysis when making a decision. You need the basics, a website, an email provider, and a content medium such as Instagram. Master a platform and set up a system and get ahead of it instead of trying to do all of the things at one time. The question about having a Facebook group is always popular. If you are asking if you should have a Facebook group, that means that you probably want to, so do it. It won't grow to thousands of followers overnight, but there are some clever ways to grow your group in a genuine way. Everything will come into place once clients come and when you are patient. Robyn emphasized that numbers don't mean anything if the people aren't connecting with you. You want genuine, truly interested people following you and engaging with you, not just large numbers of followers. Robyn recommends using your website as the tool for being discovered. Drive traffic to your website. Don't disregard small numbers, show up for who is there. Take care of and be grateful for the people in your world already. Organic Marketing is key when you start a coaching business Lindsay recommends Pinterest as an organic marketing tool. If you don't have organic marketing in place, your business is not going to grow. Pinterest feeds your email service provider and you don't have to rely on Instagram, which is not reliable. Learn more about Pinterest here. Create your coaching package before you start a coaching business What is your goal, and what price do you want to charge? Lindsay believes in having 3 coaching packages. Every time you increase your prices, you will get more clients. Lindsay's lowest-priced package is the least sold. People always choose the middle or highest ticket item. She also recommends having prices on your website. Do people need to have a certification before they start a coaching business? Lindsay believes you do not need a certification to be a business coach. As long as you are learning from others, mentors or coaches, you don't need a certification. This is where your journey and experiences come into play. But don't let certification hold you back from starting your coaching business. THE YOU ARE CALLED PODCAST - Find Your Purpose, Grow In Your Christian Faith, Develop As A Leader
Hi beautiful! Welcome to the first Thursday episode! You can now look forward to two episodes a week, Tuesday and Thursday!
THE YOU ARE CALLED PODCAST - Find Your Purpose, Grow In Your Christian Faith, Develop As A Leader
Hi beautiful! Proverbs is my favorite book of the Bible. I love its practical and relevant wisdom. In it, we learn about the famous Proverbs 31 Woman. The woman we all aspire to be like! In today's episode, we dive in to find out just how much like her we really are. Come with an open mind and heart, prepared to learn. Be encouraged in knowing that we are not perfect but choose to grow daily into the beautiful woman of God He created us to be! Are you ready? Grab your coffee, your pretty notebook, and let's go!!
Today we are going to talk about something pretty special. We are going to talk about YOU! Do you ever struggle with comparison with others in your industry or business? Or do you ever get frustrated with why you aren't hitting those big goals in your business? Well my friend, wherever you are in your entrepreneurial journey, guess what? You're exactly where you're meant to be, and all you can do is focus on growth from where you are in order to get where you want to be. In today's episode, I'm going to share with you the importance of Embracing YOUR Numbers. Not your competitor, not your last business model, but right where you are NOW. Last week - we talked about reverse engineering your goals. Did you do your homework? If so, you've likely analyzed your numbers in your budget (using WAVE) and you've set a finish line goal to accomplish for each quarter of the year. Let me share an example of this in my business first. So how do I go from where I am to where I want to be by the end of the year? I start from where I am!! Let's flash back to four years ago in 2018. Even though I was doing pretty well in my business with around 100 teammates, some of my sideline sisters had flown past me with hundreds if not thousands of teammates. But guess what, I had a clear metric In my notes app, I track the number of total teamies I have and multiply by my currently metric of growth to get a monthly, quarterly or year end goal, and I've been doing it since I had around 100 teammates, and now just 4 years later I have almost 4,000. Let's start from where you are and focus on that word I love so much: Incremental I want you to take whatever number you want to grow - your net income (money in your pocket after expenses), number of followers, team size, and focus on INCREMENTAL smaller steps to get there. My recommendation is to multiply by 1.10. Your homework is to break out a notebook or your notes app on your phone, and right now, whatever that dream number that's in your head - income, team size, number of items sold, write down where you ARE right now. Next, make a vertical column with all 12 months left in this year. I want you to take the number where you are now and multiply it by 1.10 to get an incremental growth rate of 10% better than where you are right now. Keep doing that for every month. What does your end of the year look like now? It might have started off slow and steady, but it grew by the power of compound interest by simply doing just a little bit better than the previous month. If your end number seems higher than what's possible, feel free to apply the same metric to each quarter of the year (10% growth each quarter) or even each year. 10% growth in profit each year, and imagine what your business would look like each year? Second homework piece, focus on gratitude for where you are RIGHT NOW. One of my fave quotes is by Lara Casey, the founder of Cultivate What Matters and my beloved goal setting planner - the Powersheets. It says: Comparison isn't just the thief of joy, it's the thief of everything. Keep your eyes on your own purposeful path. Celebrate others. Celebrate progress, not perfection. Cultivate gratitude over comparison. Gratitude turns what we have into more than enough.
Welcome back to our LAST episode of the Business Journey podcast for 2021! Today, we're talking about how I prepare for the Q1 of 2022! I seriously cannot believe that it's almost 2022. How is that possible? I know I've said that the last few episodes, but it really is true. I hope that this episode inspires you and helps you feel more prepared for the start of the year! Really quick... one other way to be prepared for the start of the new year is to check out my http://www.Rebeccaricephoto.com/3K-minis ( $3K Mini Sessions Blueprint.) It's a step-by-step guide of what to do to make $3,000 on your next mini sessions. Whether you've hit that goal before or just want to see if there's other ideas to try, grab this free guide. It will help you plan your minis for next year with even more confidence! Now back to Q1 planning! Prepping for Q1 of 2022When we talk about the first quarter of the year, I mean January, February and most of March. It's a slower season for most family photographers and it's a great time to be strategic about the work that you're doing. I want to share everything I do to prepare for the new year with you. It's easy to get caught up in just resting since we all survived the holidays and busy season, but I want to encourage you to use this time wisely. Start with an overview of the year. The first thing I do is get my huge 2022 wall calendar from Kat Schmoyer printed and put on my wall. Get yours here - https://katschmoyer.com/shop (Kat's Quarterly Calendars)! This allows me to look at the year as a whole. I get mine printed at Staples and then get it up on my office wall, but you could use it online too! Once it's up, I begin to fill it in. I always start with family tings - birthdays, our vacations, and anything we've committed to as a family. Next, I add what I may have committed to for the business - conferences, speaking engagements, travel. And from there, I decide on some mini session dates for the spring! Look at your parking lot.Once my calendar is setup, I look at what I call my "business parking lot" (thanks Kat!). This is a place where I put ideas that need to be done or I want to do but don't have the space for in that moment. These might be things like updating my website portfolio, my client guide, or whatever. So during this slower season at the start of the year, I pick out a few of these projects and decide when I'm going to do them. It's a great time to evaluate the blogs that you might want to do. And I always encourage you to review our workflows and automations in this season, too! Take the time to decide on projects you can focus on now - like Pinterest. PS - want more help with Pinterest? Check out our Behind the Lens masterclass on that! Get out my Powersheets. The third and final thing I do is plan out my Q1 goals with the help of Lara Casey's Powersheets. https://cultivatewhatmatters.com/collections/goal-planners-and-accessories (PowerSheets) aren't planners, but they're systems to help you define your goals. This allows me to look at yearly and quarterly goals. I like using Kat's Quarterly Calendar to lay out the focus once I know my goals. They might be something simple like just nailing down spring mini dates, then it's also doing promo shots, and all of the steps in our https://rebeccaricephoto.com/mini-sessions-playbook (Mini Sessions Playbook). Those all become goals for that month in Q1! I hope these three steps help you think about how you want to prepare for Q1 this year! I don't know about you but we had a crazy busy fall season and I'm excited to slow down, reset, and regroup going into the new year! Take advantage of your slow season and get ahead for 2022! I believe in you!

As we get closer and closer to the end of the year, "goal setting" becomes a popular buzzword in the creative industry (and beyond). I'm a huge fan of goals so I wanted to share how I set goals in my business each year. Whether you love goals like me or would rather not set something, join me on this week's episode. These tips might surprise you! But, before we dive into all of that though, I want to share my new FREE guide with you: http://www.Rebeccaricephoto.com/3K-minis (My $3K Mini Sessions Blueprint.) It's a step-by-step guide of what to do to make $3,000 on your next mini sessions. Whether you've hit that goal before or just want to see if there's other ideas to try, grab this free guide. It's jam packed with tons of great information for you! Now let's jump back to goal setting for your business! How I Set Goals in My BusinessLike I said before, I'm a goal person. I'm an Enneagram 3 and I just love setting goals because of it. Checking off lists makes me happy and I think that kind of is the same thing for goals! So today, I wanted to give you an inside look at how I set goals in my business each year. So let's dive into it! The Tools I Use for Goal SettingEach year, I set yearly goals which are 2 or 3 overarching goals I have for that year. Then I also set quarterly goals. I do that each quarter at a time. So, I'll set my yearly goals and Q1 goals in January. There's prep work involved in setting goals. You don't just sit down and decide what to do. Look at what's been happening, what worked well and what didn't. I love the system that Lara Casey teaches with her PowerSheets! They break down the whole process so it's less overwhelming and I truly do see results year after year. In addition to PowerSheets, I use Kat Schmoyer's printable calendars. She has a quarterly printable calendar and I love printing it, framing it, and using my dry erase markers on it each quarter. I think it really helps me break down my quarterly goal into smaller, reasonable chunks of focus. PS. We did a whole interview about https://rebeccaricephoto.com/2021/04/05/quarterly-planning-tips-with-kat-schmoyer/ (how to plan quarterly for your business) - make sure you take a look, she's literally the Calendar Queen! When I sit down and go through my goals, I make sure to update everything at once so I'm ready to start tackling goals. How to Set Your GoalsWhen it comes to actually setting goals, I use a system called SMART goals. It stands for smart, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based goals. These are the lenses I look through when setting my goals each year and quarter. Basically, you want to make sure that the goals you set actually matter for your business and are measurable - this will vary goal to goal. But you want to make sure that you can actually SEE progress. Remember your season of life while planning your goals, too. That's something I think many of us forget. Attainable and realistic mean two different things depending on your season of life. And remember, you can always refresh or change your goals too! One of the biggest lessons I've learned about goal setting is to be flexible. Each quarter, I take a look at what happened and what's ahead. This helps me refresh my goals. You shouldn't feel like you're stuck with the same goals all year long. It's actually why I don't like New Year's resolutions - they aren't flexible! Be flexible and kind to yourself. That's a quick overview of how I set goals each year and quarter! I want to hear what goals you've set and how you lay them out for yourself! Are you using Power Sheets or a calendar? Or just a list somewhere? Now is the perfect time to sit down and decide what's on your goal list for 2022! What do you want to feel this time next year and how are you going to get there? You've got this!!! Links Mentionedhttp://www.Rebeccaricephoto.com/3K-minis (+ My $3K Mini Sessions Blueprint)...
In 2009, Lara Casey—PowerSheets® creator, best-selling author, and mom to three—wrote a blog post ("How to Make Things Happen") in an attempt to answer the many emails she received asking, "how do you do it all?" The blog post received a flurry of responses, resonating with hundreds of people. It sparked a movement that turned into the Making Things Happen Conference a decade ago, where she continues to lead attendees through our proven process to uncover what truly matters to them and do something about it. Though SW retired in 2018 so our team could focus on helping women cultivate what matters in every season of life, SW's legacy lives on!

January is the start of the new year and it feels like everyone is tooting their Goal Setting and Yearly Planning horns. While intentions are good, planning is not my strong suit because I have ADHD. Throw in some time blindness, another feature of ADHD, and I have trouble planning today, let along the next 12 months. How can I plan for October when I don't know even what I am going to make for dinner tonight? Instead, let's break down planning into baby steps, and bring the future into the "now" by looking only at the upcoming month. While this won't magically fix our missing "time" skills, this will remind us what is coming up and help us feel prepared for what is ahead. Much appreciation to Lara Casey, from whom I adapted this technique. Download the notes from today's episode here: https://www.patriciasung.com/monthahead Do you want to be on the podcast? This week, Kelly invites the creator of the best selling PowerSheets Intentional Goal Planner, Lara Casey, on the show to talk about the importance of intentionality. Kelly and Lara discuss best practices for effectively narrowing in on goals. Kelly asks Lara for ideas and strategies to eliminate goal setting around things that don’t enhance life. Lara and Kelly dive into what goal setting and year planning will look like post-pandemic. Lara advises business owners not to expect the world to go back to the way it was. She says that 2021 is a different economic and emotional landscape and that people should have their listening ears on as it relates to the people they serve. Lara says business owners need to allow themselves the time and space to process their feelings about the previous year. Finally, Kelly asks Lara for tips and strategies for service-based business owners looking to get involved in product-based businesses. Want to buy the PowerSheet and beyond? When life gets hard, what is your hope? What helps you weather the storms of life? As believers, we will experience suffering and hardships on this side of eternity. We have to ask: what helps us persevere and not lose hope? The key is to set our eyes, hearts, and minds on eternity. This is really important, but even as believers, we may not know the why and how. In this episode, we talk about what setting our eyes on eternity means, and how we can practically do it in our everyday lives. Christine talks with Kayla Stoecklein about her husband Andrew's death by suicide. Kayla shares about Andrew's battle with mental illness, how it affected their marriage and small children, and how it affected his job as pastor of a megachurch. Suicide is a subject we so rarely talk openly about, but Kayla decided immediately upon Andrew's death to talk about it. In this conversation, Kayla not only shares her grief, but she also shares how we can support our pastors, what she wants us to understand about suicide, and what she'd say to those who are caring for others with mental illness. Though this is a difficult topic, it's such an important one, and Kayla's bravely written a new book detailing Andrew's story called Fear Gone Wild.If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.LINKS FROM THE SHOWKayla's new book, Fear Gone Wild // Andrew's "Hot Mess" talks // Leading on Empty by Wayne Cordeiro CHRISTINE'S LATEST BOOK Order Christine's book, With All Your HeartDownload the With All Your Heart study guideEPISODE SPONSORS Find out more about the new book, A Better Than Anything Christmas, by Barbara Reaoch.Find out more about the new book, Gracie's Garden, by Lara Casey.REVIEW BY FAITH ON ITUNESCONNECT Connect with KaylaWebsite // Instagram // ShopCONNECT Connect with ChristineWebsite // Facebook // Instagram // Twitter // Books Sign up for Christine's monthly newsletter By Faith is produced by Jesse WerzingerMusic for By Faith was created by The Silver PagesArtwork for By Faith was created by Reed Harmon

Do you struggle to find a reason to worship these days? We get it ... this year has been tough. So how do we worship when there's so much to be worried about? Today on the show, our friend Lara Casey from Cultivate What Matters shows us how writing out Scripture is a pathway to praise. When we write the Word, we retain the Word. And being able to recall the Truths in God's Word and rejoice in who He is in the middle of any circumstance is what worship is all about. We hope this episode leaves you equipped and encouraged to cultivate a life of worship, starting with a simple habit. Do you feel stuck and anxious for something more? A decade ago, Lara Casey found herself with a growing business, but a crumbling marriage. By shifting her focus to what mattered most, Lara’s marriage was restored and she launched a new venture helping women set goals and live intentional lives. If you struggle to accomplish what you want, Lara shares why small steps lead to big results. What you will learn: The impact of not knowing what is important What is a truly good goal Why your action steps should be very small Failure is fertilizer How intentional goal setting advances your life Why you should know the circumstances of your season How to get back on track Quotes: “How do you have a heart and ambition for something and then really do something about it?” – Lara Casey “For me, I know now that my work is not my worth and that I want to be doing things in the direction of living for a greater purpose than myself.” – Lara Casey “I think that’s the beauty of what I call ‘cultivated goals’ is when they’re focused on the big picture, how you live them out can be flexible.” – Lara Casey “You have to take a risk for the things that really matter or else you’re going to feel stuck.” – Lara Casey “Sometimes you just take one step and suddenly, now you have momentum.” – Derrick Kinney “Where am I going to be so grateful that I spent my time in the big picture? Am I going to be so grateful that I took risks for the thing that matters? Or am I going to be really grateful that I stood in my disappointment for a little too long and got complacent and complained a lot?” – Lara Casey “I think about so many people have false expectations. They think that to be successful, nothing ever goes wrong, but the reality is success is expecting failure and then knowing how you’re going to property respond to it.” – Derrick Kinney “The thing is, everybody ends up somewhere, but few people end up somewhere on purpose.” – Lara Casey “You don’t have to force motivation when you’re doing something that really matters to you in the big picture.” – Lara Casey “Life is never going to be perfect, but it sure will be meaningful when you have your eyes set on the right things.” – Lara Casey Follow Good Money Good Hands Good Work on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/goodmoneyframework Free Valuable Report for our Listeners: https://goodmoneyframework.com Recommended Resources: Cultivatewhatmatters.com Laracasey.com
Today I'm talking with Lara Casey, owner of Cultivate What Matters and the creator of products like PowerSheets® Intentional Goal Planner, Write the Word® journals, and the Cultivated Homeschool Planner® to help you make what matters happen, right where you are. PowerSheets® is the tool that helped me build a six-figure business that supports my life! Lara Casey is a mom to three (one through the gift of adoption), a grateful wife, and a believer in the impossible. (She and her husband, Ari, have quite the story)! Lara is passionate about helping people get unstuck, unrushed, and living on purpose instead of by accident. To help with those things, she created PowerSheets®, a grace-filled goal setting planner, Write the Word® journals, and founded Southern Weddings Magazine a decade ago. Some people think I help people find their calling. But I'll be the first to tell you that's not what I do. It's just not my thing. The idea that there is only one purpose I was put on this Earth to do is paralyzing. I actually believe there are many things I could do that would get me excited about going to work on a Monday morning. And I think the same is probably true for you. Related: Why You Shouldn't Worry About Finding Your Calling That's why I don't deal with callings. Instead, I help people discover something they're really good at and enjoy doing, so they can turn it into a business they love. I love this because when people know what they're passionate about, they begin to live intentionally in their purpose. They become more thoughtful and action-oriented because now they know exactly what to go after. Rather than just reacting to whatever life throws at them, they set goals and carefully evaluate the steps needed to get there. This is important because when you decide to live on purpose in your purpose, you'll experience more fulfillment and success. Why? Because nothing will push you to work harder than whatever it is that fires you up. So let me ask you: Is this the kind of life you're living today? I know it can be hard to feel sure, which is why I have three clues you can look for to figure this out. How Do You Know If You're Living an Intentional Life? 1. You're Living in Your Gifts and Strengths I believe God made you 100% unique. There's no one else on this Earth who has your combination of voice, style, perspective, experience and interests. Understanding and utilizing the gifts God has given you in your business is critical to your success. Like I said earlier: When you're not working in your strengths, you not only won't enjoy your work, but you'll also lack the motivation to push through the rough patches. And let me tell you, there are a lot of those in business. If you could use more encouragement around using your God-given gifts in business, download my free 7-Day Devotional in the Resources section below. 2. You're Passionate About What You're Pursuing Just like your strengths and your gifts, God also created you with unique interests, values and passions. I love dancing, but I hate details. I get really excited about adventure and being outside, but I'm not a fan of math, history or science. I'm passionate about people and relationships, but I'm not crazy about politics. But you know what's so fascinating? There are lots of people out there who do get excited about the things I don't like. So what gets you excited? What makes you light up and come alive? What gives you energy and joy? Take your time thinking and praying over these questions. It will help you identify whether you're actually passionate about what you're doing. Related: How to Find Your Passion and Grow a Business You Love 3. You're Making a Difference God didn't create any of us to be an island-off on our own unconcerned about the rest of the world. In fact, I believe He created us to live and work in community. It means He gave us our unique strengths, gifts and passions for the purpose of blessing other people. When you focus on the needs of the people you're helping and serving, you're making a difference. You're impacting someone's life, and that's a clear indicator that you're exactly where you need to be. This week, I want to challenge you to look for specific examples of each clue in your life. Are you living in your strengths? Are you passionate about what you're doing? Are you making a difference in some way? The list you compile should tell you one of two things: You're doing exactly what you should be doing right now. It's time to start making small changes that will lead you where you want to be in the future. I love gadgets and tools. I love my leaf blower and my cordless drill. I took my Instant Pot to the beach a few weeks ago. I'm eternally grateful for my refrigerator, washer and dryer, my laptop, Kindle, iPad, and camp stove. I love my kitchen gadgets too: my microplane, tea bag buddy, and rice cooker. I'm sure we all have favorite tools and gadgets. For the last few weeks, we've been talking about what's important to you and what changes you'd like to make in your life. As I've been working through that series, I promised you a practical episode about the tools I use in pursuit of a better me. We're actually going to spend a few weeks here. Your toolbox is really important. There are some key items you need to have available to be successful in making changes. This particular episode is actually the least important of the next three, but fun for gadget and tool loving people like me. As we talk about these tools, something else you should know about me is that I love well-designed things. I'm also very tactile, so how something looks and feels matters a lot to me. I want to curate an environment filled only with things that I really love to use or to look at. Are all the things I'm going to talk about necessary? Nope. Are they the best options? Maybe. Maybe not. These are the things that I'm using right now. Your mileage may vary. Let's talk about planners. A million years ago, when I got my first real job and needed to be able to keep track of tasks and appointments, I began using the Franklin Covey planners and materials. I used them for years. They're effective and useful. I don't use them right now because they don't fit my lifestyle. They don't work as well for what I need. I've used an awful lot of different planners and systems since then. I mention that to explain that all of them are more effective than nothing and all are perfectly suited to someone. So, if my tools don't appeal to you, just try something else until you find something that works perfectly for you. Standard calendar-based planners don't work well for me anymore because my life is really variable. Sometimes I need a daily calendar system and sometimes I don't. So, all planners that are based on a calendar only get partially used and because I don't need it all the time, I don't carry it with me and so even when I would need it, I don't have it along. Usually, around February or March, it becomes buried on my desk, never to be used again. If you need a calendar-based system, there are many to choose from. Here's what I do instead. I use a combination of a Google calendar, a journal, and a goal-planning system. I use Google calendar for appointments and long-term plans, like vacations. I check it every day and have it available on my phone. It's with me all the time when I need it. I got intrigued by bullet journaling a few years ago. I did a ton of reading, understood their philosophy, saw beautiful examples and decided to try it. Very quickly I realized there were things about it that made sense for me, but most of it did not. I do use my journal for to-do lists, brain dumps, tracking things, and daily calendars when I need one. But, I also collect notes, thoughts, lists (like books, I've read or art projects ideas). I use it to think through life questions. To brainstorm plans and to keep track of things I want to remember. I use it to get ideas out of my head so that I can move past them. In these activities, it more resembles a commonplace book than a planner. Commonplace books are typically collections of thoughts, ideas, recipes or things to be remembered that you might gather as you go through life. I do create daily calendar entries when I get especially busy and need to plan how to get everything done. My journal of choice is a Leuchtturm1917. They have hard covers and come in a variety of sizes, colors and page styles. I use a medium size with a dotted page. I like them because I can choose a different color for each year - I tend to go through at least two per year. Last year was lime green, this year is emerald, which really is more like a seafoam green and reminds me of the ocean. I like the dotted pages because it gives me some guidelines without being as rigid as a graph or lined page. But, the best part about them is that they have numbered pages and several blank tables of contents pages in the front. As I use pages, I can choose to enter them in the front with the page number or not. I don't need to know where my daily calendar-type pages are, because once past, I shouldn't need to reference them again so I don't note those in the front. But, lists, plans or ideas pages…those I can enter on the contents pages and they're much easier to find in the future when I need to reference them. I'm also partial to colored pens. I'm an artist and love art supplies. When art and office supplies intersect, I'm even more of a sucker. So. I have a pen holder with a jillion colors of pens. My favorites for daily use are Pentel EnerGels in a variety of colors. If you do any research at all on bullet journaling, you'll find beautiful, elaborate, lovely journals with colors, stickers, washi tape and gorgeous design. While mine has lots of ink color, it is not like that at all. Those journals are impressive. I love looking at them. But, my journals tend to be raw, messy, and not designed. You have permission to use your journal however you want. Other than one particular kind of entry, I use color completely randomly. I'm messy. My journal is a tool to keep my head and life organized so that I can do my art - live my life - out in the world. Many people's journals are their art, and that's a wonderful thing. But, they don't have to be like that. Mine is definitely not. Before I leave the topic of my journal, there are two things that I used to do in my journal that I'm separating out this year. I'm adding two other journals to my toolbox. One will be a book journal and one a sketchnote book. I read a lot and I read fast. Two years ago, I decided to read 100 books a year. I didn't do it. Because I realized during that time that that's a really bad goal for me. I was reading just to meet the goal. I wasn't absorbing the information from the books the way I should. So, I'm planning this year to have a dedicated place…my book journal…to slow my reading down. I'm going to record the books I read and either take written or visual notes as I read or at a minimum write a synopsis and my thoughts about each book when I'm done. Instead of a particular quantity of books, my goal will be 30 minutes of reading a day with the note-taking helping me to absorb and apply the information. This journal will stay at home. The other thing I want to separate out is a note-taking journal that will stay in my bag. I've started taking visual notes of speakers at workshops, sermons, and meetings and I want a different type of paper for that, so will be putting that into a separate journal with art paper. That's the practical everyday side of my tools. But, there's a planning side too. I've tried a lot of different planning systems over the years, but my favorite right now is Lara Casey's Powersheets. You can find out all about them and her philosophy at cultivatewhatmatters.com. The 2018 Powersheets are sold out (I know, I should have done this episode a month ago, right?), but you can always get the non-dated six-month version, it will work just as well. The powersheets mimic much of the planning approach that I have found to be effective in the past. They're about cultivating the life you want. Lara has also written a few books, the most current is Cultivate: A Grace-Filled Guide to Growing an Intentional Life. The Powersheets are a really thorough, powerful planning system based on cultivating the kind of life you really want. It's a planning system only, there's no calendar in it. However, there are activity sheets for each month that help you figure out what you need to be doing each month. I highly recommend it. By the way, I don't get anything from talking about these products, they're just what I'm using right now. One of the monthly activity sheets that I've found especially helpful in the Powersheets collection is the Tending List. It's essentially a goal tracking list of daily, weekly and monthly goals for each month. I mention it because a daily habit tracker is something that I have always drawn into my journal each month. The things I track often change month to month, but I got tired of drawing the chart…it gets messy and always looks the same anyway. I don't always have the powersheets with me and I usually track more things than the powersheets have space for. So, doing it there is kind of a pain. Instead of redrawing it every month this year, I decided to create a tracking chart document that I can print and tape into my journal. Then I don't have to repetitively draw it and it looks neater. So, that's what I'm doing this year and you can download a copy of it below if you like. It's simple and functional and not cutesy or fancy…but, if you decide to track some habits in the new year, it might be helpful for you. You can print them off, cut them out and tape them in a journal or leave them as is and put them in a three-ring binder. [check the website shownotes for the download] There are a few miscellaneous items I want to mention also. I add a pen loop to my journal and usually have one pen hooked to the outside of it (my pens don't fit inside the loop well). Most of the pens I carry in a RusticTown pencil case. It's a brown, vintage leather zippered roll and one of my most favorite things ever. The leather feels wonderful, it looks like a well-traveled vintage piece and I have about 12 colored pens and sketch pens in there right now. Another random item I use is a chalk marker. I have a set of MooMoo Creative chalk markers and use them to write notes to myself on my bathroom mirror. In November, we write things we're grateful for. Right now, my 5 commandments are on the mirror. It's a good way to remind yourself of attitudes you want to have, quotes or verses you want to memorize or things you want to do or aspire to. I'll probably be mentioning these tools in the upcoming series on making lasting change and I wanted to give you an overview of them. You don't need any of these to make changes in your life, but Leuchtturm journals, Pentel EnerGel pens, and Cultivate What Matters Powersheets are some of the tools I have in my toolbox. Tools I use to organize my head and my life. Want episodes delivered to your inbox each Monday morning? Click here
