Paul's background includes being a Fellowship Award winner with the Kennedy Center, a two time Pulitzer Prize award for music nominee, and a recipient of a fellowship through the National Endowment for the Arts that provided music for programs in the prison systems. Today: Diana Bosse, the city of Crown Point's entertainment superintendent, is on "Regionally Speaking" to talk about the 2021 "Adopt-A-Family" program, which will assist 12 local families and about 30 children during the holiday season. Indiana Youth Institute's Tami Silverman was on the program recently to talk about ways to help children learn about the importance of kindness and giving. We bring back that conversation, along with one with Paige Sharp with the Indiana Arts Commission about an annual program that helps Hoosier artists become better entrepreneurs. South Shore Arts is a local partner in the program. Side Effects Public Media reporter Carter Barrett also has a report on conservatorships -- with an example of a Hoosier who was under one for years, controlled by his parents, even though he was an adult with a wife and a child.

A recipient of an Individual Artist Program Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, Arroyo’s fiction is a part of the Library of Congress series Spotlight on U.S. Hispanic Writers. Arroyo’s writing is also included in Camino del Sol: Fifteen Years of Latina and Latino Writing and The Colors of Nature: Essays on Culture, Identity and the Natural World.

Rolling Stone magazine calls Krista Detor’s soul-nourishing music "A small miracle.” A singer/song-writer, her solo albums have reached national and international prominence on the Euro-Americana and Folk and Independent Music charts. She was one of the few artists to perform in the Emmy nominated TV concert Wilderness Plots for PBS where she wrote and sang songs inspired by the book Wilderness Plots by American College of Arts & Letters inductee Scott Russell Sanders. Krista has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She has been commissioned to write musical theater and choir pieces around the world from the Indiana Arts Commission to the U.S. Department of State in New Delhi. Krista and her partner, David Weber created the non-profit theater residency The Hundredth Hill Artist Residency in Bloomington, Indiana. From August to October The Hundredth Hill hosted an emerging theater residency, housed New York University graduates who created two new theater pieces, which are being safely staged outside on the majestic property. Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey is admired as a community activist, arts administrator, and advocate for educational equity. Terry was appointed from 2012-19 as Director of Community Development for the City of Muncie, Indiana (population 70,000), overseeing a $7.5 million in government grants from the U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), U.S. Dept. of Treasury, and Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA). Before her appointment, Terry had a successful career as an arts administrator, serving as President & Chief Executive Officer of the Historic Madame Walker Theatre Center in Indianapolis and Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie, Indiana.  In both organizations, she was instrumental in creating arts and community partnerships, increasing grants and donations, and developing arts education opportunities for children and youth. Terry previously held positions with Ball State University, most notably as the Director of Executive Staff & Administrative Affairs (Chief of Staff) for the Office of the President.  Terry has been actively involved in local, state, and national organizations. She is a Certified Nonprofit Consultant by the National Association of Nonprofit Organizations & Executives and recently served as a Creative Placemaking Consultant for the Indiana Arts Commission and now serves as their Legislative Liaison.  She has also received three Mayor’s Community Service Awards, the Indiana Community Arts Leadership Award, the Arts Achievement Award from Center for Leadership Development, the Very Important Volunteer Award (V!VA), the Outstanding Service Award from Muncie Rotary and the prestigious Athena Award from Women in Business Unlimited (WIBU), Inc. Terry currently serves on the following Boards:  IU Health-Ball Memorial Hospital, United Way of Delaware & Henry Counties, and Meridian Health Services. In addition, she is an active Rotarian, immediate past-President of the Anderson-Muncie Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a founding member of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Team. She is currently a grant writer for the Center for Leadership Development in Indianapolis. Terry earned two Bachelors degrees from Rutgers University and her Masters' degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).  She completed post-graduate work in Management Development at Harvard University, and earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree (D.Min) from Newburgh Theological Seminary. My friend Barbara Shoup returns to the podcast to share lessons from her writing life and her new book about writing, A COMMOTION IN YOUR HEART. She talks candidly about struggling with depression, finding joy in writing even when it doesn’t lead to great fame and fortune, and the challenge of bringing forth something as ethereal as a story using only language. The recipient of the PEN Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Working Writer Fellowship and grants from the Indiana Arts Commission, she is the Writer-in-Residence at the Indiana Writers Center and a faculty member at Art Workshop International.

This week’s episode has Sara Jackson interviewing Regina R. Smith, who is the managing director of The Kresge Foundation’s Arts & Culture Program. This conversations covers a lot of ground in terms of funding change in arts and culture, and the interesting creative placemaking focused approach that Kresge is currently taking. Regina has been with Kresge since 2008 and previously worked at the Arts & Science Council in Charlotte, N.C.,as vice president of grants and services. She also served as programs and services director at Culture Works in Dayton, Ohio, for five years and managed a program for the Indiana Arts Commission prior to that. Regina was the recipient of a nine-month Arts Administration Fellowship, where she was in residence with three arts organizations: the Madison Art Center, COMPAS in St. Paul, Minn., and Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs. She began her career as a museum educator at the Cleveland Children’s Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

ArtSees Productions welcomes Susan Block for a 6 week series, "Conversations On Creativity." Tonight's special guest is Indiana Poet Laureate George Kalamaras.  George Kalamaras was born in Chicago and grew up in Cedar Lake, in Lake County. He has published six books of poetry and one of scholarship including Kingdom of Throat-Stuck Luck, winner of the Elixir Press Poetry Contest, The Recumbent Galaxy, co-authored with Alvaro Cardona-Hine and winner of the C&R Press Open Competition, and The Theory and Function of Mangoes, winner of the Four Way Books Intro Series; six poetry chapbooks; numerous articles in scholarly journals; and more than 725 poems in anthologies and magazines in the U.S and abroad. His work has received numerous honors, including a Creative Writing Poetry Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and two Individual Artist Fellowship Grants from the Indiana Arts Commission. In 1994, he received an Indo-U.S. Advanced Research Fellowship to India. Since 1990, he has served as professor of English at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Susan Block brings with her a vast knowledge of the arts and creativity. She is LaPorte County Poet Laureate Emeritus, playwright, writing workshop leader, art exhibition curator and cultural arts advocate. Alice Friman is author of eight collections of poetry, most recently The Book of the Rotten Daughter and Zoo, winner of the Ezra Pound Poetry Award from Truman State University and the Sheila Margaret Motton Prize from the New England Poetry Club. Her poems appear in Poetry, The Georgia Review, Boulevard, The Southern Review, The Gettysburg Review, and Shenandoah, which awarded Friman the 2002 James Boatwright III Prize for Poetry. She’s received fellowships from the Indiana Arts Commission and the Arts Council of Indianapolis and has been awarded residencies at many colonies including MacDowell and Yaddo. She was named Writer in Residence at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in 2003-04. Friman is the winner of three prizes from Poetry Society of America and in 2001-02 was named to the Georgia Poetry Circuit. Professor Emerita at the University of Indianapolis, she now lives in Milledgeville, GA where she is Poet-in-Residence at Georgia College & State University.Friman read in Cornell’s Goldwin Smith Hall on April 12, 2007.
