Meg Mitchell Moore talks to Carol Fitzgerald about VACATIONLAND, her latest novel, which is set in Maine. The home in the book is loosely based on a home that her friends own in Maine. She loves visiting there and setting a book there was a joy. The book opens with a woman on a bus coming to town, which Meg notes hits the theme --- “a stranger comes to town.” From there why she is there is juxtaposed around the story of Louisa and her children who are set to spend a wonderful summer at their grandparents' home. But her grandfather is slipping with Alzheimer's and that causes a pall over the usual summer vibe. She talked about the how she worked on the pacing for secrets kept and secrets revealed. Janet Skeslien-Charles new novel is 'The Paris Library', inspired by the true stories of the librarians who risked their lives during the Nazi's war on words. We talk about when she heard that tale, how she knew there was a book in it, and she'd be the one to write it.It comes off the back of her stunning debut, 'Moonlight in Odessa', which took 10 years to write. We discuss why she brooded over the idea for such a time, and how place and environment have given her the inspiration for her stories so far.We discuss research, on Google and in the library, why she likes to know everything as she plots, but why that doesn't mean there aren't surprises along the way. You can hear why she changes the structure of her sentences between characters to highlight their differences, and what it's like writing and thinking in two languages.Grab a copy of the book here - https://amzn.to/3y8reZLYou can also support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine!@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

IN THE DARKNESS OF WAR, THE LIGHT OF BOOKS PARIS, 1939 Odile Souchet is obsessed with books, and her new job at the American Library in Paris - with its thriving community of students, writers and book lovers - is a dream come true. When war is declared, the Library is determined to remain open. But then the Nazis invade Paris, and everything changes. In Occupied Paris, choices as black and white as the words on a page become a murky shade of grey - choices that will put many on the wrong side of history, and the consequences of which will echo for decades to come. MONTANA, 1983 Lily is a lonely teenage desperate to escape small-town Montana. She grows close to her neighbour Odile, discovering they share the same love of language, the same longings. But as Lily uncovers more about Odile's mysterious past, she discovers a dark secret, closely guarded and long hidden. Based on the true Second World War story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris, this is an unforgettable novel of romance, friendship, family, and of heroism found in the quietest of places.

Herded on to a train bound for Auschwitz, in an act of desperation she entrusts her most precious possession to a stranger. All she has left now is hope.
