You've undoubtedly heard of American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, the First Lady of Song, but you likely don't know much about her early life. My guest this week aims to change all that. Diane Richards is an author, playwright, singer, producer, and the Executive Director of the Harlem Writers Guild, which launched and supported Dr. Maya Angelou's writing career, Diane's novel “Ella” is a fictionalized biography spanning two years of Ella's life, from her mother's death in 1932 to her breakout performance at the Apollo Theater in 1934. Diane, herself, is a talented dancer and singer, performing at Carnegie Hall and singing backup for Whitney Houston. Her lyricism pours through the pages, as Ella falls from one unbelievable tragedy to another, an ode to the tenacity, resilience, and talent of Ella Fitzgerald as powerful as any gospel. https://www.diane-richards.com/https://www.instagram.com/thedianerichards/https://twitter.com/DianeRichards_ Join us on Patreon: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/ CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. I'm very excited to welcome back this week's guest Helen Fripp! Helen first graced us with her presence in our 32nd episode, where we spoke about her novel “The Painter's Girl.” Her latest novel finds us returning to France - this time, in Provence during World War II - in “The Girl from Provence.” “The Girl from Provence” has everything: war, intrigue, and romance. Even Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the author of “The Little Prince,” plays an important role.In our conversation, I ask Helen about the controversial nature of a love story between Lilou, a young French Resistance fighter, and Kristian, a Nazi soldier who is more than what he seems. Welcome back to the Season Seven Premiere of Storytime in Paris! My first guest is Cynthia Newberry Martin and the moment I read her latest novel “The Art of Her Life,” I knew I needed to introduce you, dear listeners, to her work. Cynthia won the Gold Medal in Literary Fiction at the 2020 Independent Publisher Book Awards and the 14th Annual National Indie Excellence Award for Fiction for her first novel “Tidal Flats.” In “The Art of Her Life,” our main character Emily fell in love with the painting Breakfast by Henri Matisse as a young child, and her love of this painting has shaped, guided, and organized the way she views the world ever since. Through Emily's eyes, we learn the magic of art, the influence of color, and the power of connection. This novel nestled into my heart, wrapped itself around, and has stayed there like a gentle swaddle. https://www.cynthianewberrymartin.comhttps://www.instagram.com/cynthianewberrymartin/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/cynthianewberrymartinwriter/https://howwespendourdays.substack.com/ Find Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/ CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. For this Season Finale of Storytime in Paris, I'm thrilled to be joined by New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author Madeline Martin, who will be giving us a sneak peek into her latest book, ”The Keeper of Hidden Books.” ”The Keeper of Hidden Books” is based on the true story of the underground library in WWII Warsaw, Poland. Zofia is an intelligent, outspoken and rebellious 17-year-old, who wants nothing more than to dig into a good book and chat about it with her Jewish best friend Janina. My guest this week is best-selling, award-winning author Jennifer Cody Epstein. Jennifer's latest novel "The Madwomen of Paris" is a work of historical fiction set in Paris's 19th-century Salpêtrière, a notorious women's asylum. Here, women are treated for hysteria by world famous Doctor Jean-Martine Charcot, often publicly, on stage and under hypnosis. When Josephine is admitted to the hospital in a fit of rage and amnesia, she is placed under the care of Laure, a former-resident-turned-attendant. They quickly form a strong connection that forces them to separate truth from fiction in all facets of their lives… which may include murder. In our conversation, Jennifer shares what drew her to this particular place, period and story. She discusses the power of hysteria, hypnosis, and of beauty, how she played with perception, and why there are no heroes in her book. My guest this week is award-winning author and screenwriter Stef Penney, whose novel "The Tenderness of Wolves" won Costa Book of the Year, Theakston's Crime Novel of the Year, and has been translated into 30 languages. Her latest novel, "The Beasts of Paris,” takes us to Paris in 1870 at the onset of the Franco-Prussian War and its subsequent revolution. We visit Paris, not through the eyes of political or military strategists, but through some of her more marginalized characters: gay men, people of color, neuro-divergents, women, and those questioning their gender identity. As we drift between the zoo animals of the Jardin des Plantes to the women's asylum to the homes of the bourgeoisie and makeshift hospitals, we discover who the true beasts are. In our conversation, Stef shares who inspired her main characters and why they were so important to her, what it meant to her to focus on those often overlooked in wartime retellings, love stories and more. My guest this week is international best-selling author Dr. Caroline Cauchi. Caroline has written 9 novels, including the modern day fairy tale "The Drowning of Arthur Braxton," which was subsequently made into a feature film that won Best UK feature at the Raindance Film Festival. She is also head of book editing at BubbleCow and is currently the Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Liverpool University. Caroline's latest novel, Mrs. Van Gogh, is the story of twenty-eight year old Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger, sister-in-law to artist Vincent Van Gogh. It's through her eyes that we meet the Van Gogh brothers: charming Theo and unstable, drug-addled, starving artist Vincent. What became of Vincent's art after their deaths is thanks, in large part, to Johanna, and yet we know so little about her. In our conversation, Caroline explains what drew her to Johanna, what new insights she learned into Vincent, the photograph that inspired it all, and so much more. Then, she treats us to a reading from “Mrs. Van Gogh.” https://carolinesmailes.co.ukhttps://twitter.com/caroline_shttps://www.instagram.com/caroline_smailes/?hl=en Join our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradio Find Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/ CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. Welcome back to Season Five of Storytime in Paris! I have an excellent season lined up for you, if I do say so myself, and I'm delighted to introduce our season premiere guest: 22-time Sunday New York Times Top Ten, multi-million bestseller Adele Parks. Adele's work has been translated into 31 languages and, as if that weren't enough, Queen Elizabeth granted her the honor of MBE for Services to Literature in the New Year Honours List 2022.Adele's latest novel is “One Last Secret,” a psychological thriller told from the perspective of a high-end sex worker who takes one last job before hanging up her garters for good. It's about “power, sex, money and revenge,” and is filled with fabulous twists and turns. In our conversation, Adele talks about why she chose a sex worker as her main character, the research she did, and why that character can sometimes be confrontational with the reader. She also shares how she transitioned from writing romantic comedies to psychological thrillers, how she avoids stereotypes, spidergrams, and so much more. Welcome to the season finale of Season Four of Storytime in Paris! Her list of credits is long and impressive, and speckled with world famous brands like Chanel, Donna Karan, Nike, Oscar de la Renta, Netflix, Disney, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, to name but a few. Among her many accolades, Jamie has twice been named as one of the industry's top 100 creatives by Adweek magazine. And yet, one year, she decided to give it all up. To move by herself to a remote village in Provence and see what could happen. The result was life-changing. Jamie's book “An American in Provence,” is a beautiful memoir of that first year, combining personal relevations, recipes she loved, photographic tips, and her own stunning photography and, as of the very morning we spoke, it is a New York Times bestseller.https://jamiebeck.cohttps://www.instagram.com/jamiebeck.co/https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/An-American-in-Provence/Jamie-Beck/9781982186951Join our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. My guest this week is Kerri Maher, whose latest work of historical fiction, The Paris Bookseller, spent four weeks on the Indie Bestseller List and was just named a USA Today Bestseller. After having written about Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy and Grace Kelly, surprisingly it was The Paris Bookseller's Sylvia Beach that Kerri was most intimidated to write about. Although, as founder of the original Shakespeare and Company, close friend of Ernest Hemingway, and influential supporter of James Joyce, perhaps it's not hard to see why. In our conversation, Kerri shares what drew her to Sylvia Beach, what surprised her about James Joyce, how both the love affair with Adrienne Monnier and censorship of “obscene” materials shaped Sylvia's life, and so much more. Happy Halloween! I have a very special guest today, in honor of All Hallow's Eve: Michel de Nostradame, better known as Nostradamus. Nostradamus was a French astrologer, apothecary, physician, and seer, often using his talents to aid French royalty. Since his first prediction in 1555, people the world over have been decoding and deciphering Nostradamus's book “Les Prophéties” to see what insight it can give into the future. Thanks to the lovely and talented Eve Gallois, whose has previously been on the podcast channeling Victor Hugo and George Sand, I was able to speak with Nostradamus directly. We discussed his prophecies, of course, including how they appear, their chronology, and their relevance today. He also shared unfulfilled prophecies, his relationship with Catherine de Medici, some predictions for the future, and much, much more.Join our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. My guest this week is bestselling author Barbara Davis who has, astonishingly, written nine books in the past ten years. She's a beautiful writer of complicated women and their familial relationships. Her lastest novel, “The Keeper of Happy Endings,” builds upon an unlikely friendship in 1984 Boston between 20-something Rory and 60-something Soline, a recluse from war-torn Paris who once created magical wedding dresses. While what unites them initially may be a recognition of similar loss, what unfolds is a friendship that uncovers truth, dispels mysteries and contains just a little bit of magic. This week's guest is bestselling author Robert Dinsdale. Rob's latest novel “Paris by Starlight” is a beautiful work of magical realism that has been likened to the work of Neil Gaiman and Erin Morgenstern. In it, the Paris we know and love, with its citizens living by day, transforms with the arrival of the People, people who have been exiled from their homeland, who live by night. In our conversation, Rob discusses why Paris lends itself to magical realism, the fleeting nature of beauty, and what to make of the idea that “if you don't look after what belongs to you, somebody else just comes along and takes it.” Then, he treats us to a reading from “Paris by Starlight.”https://twitter.com/Robert_DinsdaleJoin our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. My guest this week is the lovely Helen Fripp whose latest novel “The Painter's Girl” whisks us back to Paris in the 1860s. Helen is drawn to strong women who defy societal pressures and the expectations of their time. In “The Painter's Girl,” we meet Mimi Bisset. Born in the slums of Montmartre and forced to give up the child she had out of wedlock as a teenager, Mimi could easily have become a drunk, an absinthe addict, a sex worker, or all three, like so many around her. But Mimi's dreams are too big for her tiny corner of Paris and we're carried along as she joins a circus, becomes a muse to the great Impressionists, is reawakened as Edouard Manet's lover, and fights to become an artist in her own right. In our conversation, Helen shares what sparked the idea for her striking opening scene with a zebra running through the streets of Montrmartre, what her research uncovered about the Impressionists we think we know, how setting a story in the past sets her free, what draws her to strong women - and what they may have in common - and more. Then, she treats us to a reading from “The Painter's Girl.”https://www.helenfrippauthor.co.ukhttps://www.facebook.com/hfrippauthorhttps://twitter.com/helenfripphttps://www.instagram.com/helenfrippauthor/Join our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. This week we're heading a little further afield to the Western United States, and back in time to the 1930s, with our guest, author Rebekah Anderson. Rebekah studied under author E.L. Doctorow, and her writing has received multiple awards and fellowships. Her debut novel, “The Grand Promise,” is a beautifully-written, character-driven work of literary fiction, loosely based on her own family history. In examining the real communities impacted by the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam under Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency, Rebekah challenges us to think about how we react in times of change: “Do you cling to the past and the memories of what was? Or do you move forward into the unknown?”In our conversation, Rebekah shares her family ties, what surprises her research uncovered, some excellent advice, and more. Then, she treats us to a reading from “The Grand Promise.”https://rebekahlanderson.wordpress.comhttps://www.instagram.com/anderfitz/https://www.facebook.com/rebekahandersonhttps://twitter.com/AnderFitzJoin our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. My guest this week is the woman Roxane Gay called “a consummate storyteller.” Among her many accolades, Leesa Cross-Smith has been longlisted for the 2022 Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award and the 2021 Joyce Carol Oates Literary Prize. Her latest novel, Half-Blown Rose is the Amazon Editors' Spotlight for June 2022, the inaugural pick for Amazon's Book Club Sarah Selects, and the Barnes & Noble Book Club Pick for June 2022.Half-Blown Rose is the story of Vincent, a woman whose husband recently published a book uncovering secrets about his past and their marriage. She decides to escape to Paris in an effort to make sense of it all. There, she meets Loup, a charming French man 20 years her junior with whom she begins an intense affair. In the months that follow, Vincent must decide what really matters and who she'd most like to become. In our conversation, Leesa shares how travel and the arts help shape her writing, how years are no barrier to a coming-of-age, and where her characters live after the novel ends.
