Listeners will be drawn into KJ Charles's atmospheric and compelling historical mystery. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this story of friendship—and betrayal. In 1895, Oxford University student Toby is murdered—and his close friends know that one of them must have done it. Ten years later, Jem sets out to solve the mystery that ruined his life once and for all. As the story moves back and forth in time, narrator Tom Lawrence effectively differentiates Jem's less rarified accent and those of his wealthy, upper-crust peers. Lawrence also conveys Jem's growing desperation as the further his investigation goes, the more secrets are revealed and the more danger Jem finds himself in. Want to make payroll and taxes simpler? Let today's guest Charles Read, help you out! He's a CPA who's been helping small businesses for over 30 years!
In this episode, I'm talking with Charles Read of GetPayroll, who is a specialist in providing payroll services – although he started life as a US Marine, including serving in Vietnam. This interview has actually been quite hard to summarise. First of all, it's not about payroll. Yes, it gets mentioned, obviously, but the payroll business is just the context for the learnings to come. Within that specific space, the conversation does cover such topics as marketing, differentiating and niching – and how it's set up so that every day there is an accomplishment. A success. Then there's the element that explores the transferable skills that come from a military background and can be applied in business. Planning, discipline, teamwork, motivational skills and, of course, the desire to accomplish the mission at all costs. In fact, you effectively learn the key steps to enable you to make your business a well-oiled machine. However, hidden within this business context, there actually runs a very moving love story. Charles opens up about some very personal matters and we get to see what a business can really be about. More than just systems and processes and results, but also a family, a support system and even a lifeline in times of need. Any summary I come up with feels like an injustice to the impact of this interview and the quality and quantity of the learnings you will receive. All I can do is ask you to take the time and make sure you listen to it all. If you want to know more about Charles, check out the following links: Charles' Linkedin Profile Charles' Website “The Payroll Book” If you're based in the USA, use the Discount Code “Podcast” to get a free copy – if there are any left So do check those out but for now, sit back, relax, think about how you can be successful every day, and, most of all, enjoy.

Calming the Storms: The Carry Trade, the Banking School and British Financial Crises Since 1825 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) by Dr. Charles Read exposes, for the first time in modern scholarship, the role that the rise of the Carry Trade played in British financial crises between 1825 and 1866, how in reaction the Bank of England improved its management of monetary policy after 1866 and how those lessons have been forgotten since the 1970s. Britain is one of the few major capitalist economies in the world to have avoided policy-induced systemic financial crises for more than 100 years of its history—between 1866 and 1973. Beforehand, it suffered a series of serious banking panics, in 1825, 1837, 1847, 1857-58 and 1866. Since the 1970s banking instability has returned again, with the global financial crisis of 2007-09 hitting Britain hard. Economists and policymakers have asked what can be learnt from Britain's experience of the disappearance and reappearance of crises to help efforts to prevent future ones. This book answers that question with a major reassessment of Britain's financial history over the past two centuries. It does so by applying the long-neglected ideas of the British Banking School to explain how crises can occur because of the Carry Trade. This book is essential reading for economists and historians of modern Britain, practitioners and policymakers, as well as anyone who is affected by financial crises and their consequences. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Rising interest, cost of living crisis, energy prices at an all-time high- is Britain's precarious financial situation the fault of policymakers or global forces? On the day the chancellor reveals the Autumn budget Dan and Dr Charles Read, economic historian and fellow at the University of Cambridge make sense of how Britain got here. They break down gilts, bonds and interest rates, how voters swing toward extreme parties in the wake of the financial crisis, and what lessons Kwasi Kwarteng should have taken from the Whig party's mistakes during the Great Potato Famine in the 1840s, as he made his disastrous mini-budget.Dr Charles Read's new books are called 'The Great Famine in Ireland and British Financial Crisis' and 'The Carry Trade, the Banking School and British Financial Crises since 1825'This episode was produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download History Hit app from the Apple Store. The Great Famine in Ireland and Britain's Financial Crisis (Boydell & Brewer, 2022) is rich in archival detail and offers a ground-breaking analysis. In this book, Dr. Charles Read presents a radically new interpretation of British politics and policy failings during the Great Famine. The Irish famine of the 1840s is the biggest humanitarian crisis in the United Kingdom's history. Within six years of the arrival of the potato blight in Ireland in 1845, more than a quarter of its residents had unexpectedly died or emigrated. Its population has not yet fully recovered since. Historians have struggled to explain why the British government decided to shut down its centrally organised relief efforts in 1847, long before the famine ended. Some have blamed the laissez-faire attitudes of the time for an inadequate response by the British government; others have alleged purposeful neglect and genocide. In contrast, The Great Famine in Ireland and Britain's Financial Crisis uncovers a hidden narrative of the crisis, which links policy failure in Ireland to financial and political instability in Great Britain. More important than a laissez-faire ideology in hindering relief efforts for Ireland were the British government's lack of a Parliamentary majority from 1846, the financial crises of 1847, and a battle of ideas over monetary policy between proponents and opponents of financial orthodoxy. The high death toll in Ireland resulted from the British government's plans for intervention going awry, rather than being prematurely cancelled because of laissez-faire. This book is essential reading for scholars, students and anyone interested in Anglo-Irish relations, the history of financial crises and famines, and why humanitarian-relief efforts can go wrong even with good intentions. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. And this was the beginning of our book of procedures, and it was a list of how a payroll was to be done. And so if my employees did it, it was as if I had done it. So it was like a CPA had done the payroll. And I explained to them that, hey, things will screw up. Things will happen. We'll talk about it. We'll fix the checklist. You have to do the steps. You have to do the whole process. And if you do, then you're going to give the client what they want. I've proven that I know how to do it. I'm an expert at it. But I'll be honest. My staff doesn't let me do payrolls anymore. Different software, different times. And I'd have to go back and start over to learn how to actually do the payroll. As a new entrepreneur, there is no such thing as work-life balance. It's working all the time, every day, every week, every month for a number of years and that's just the way it is if you want to be successful. If you want to work 40 hours a week don't be an entrepreneur. If you want 2 weeks of vacation every year and Christmas off don't be an entrepreneur. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-inventive-journey/message
