Why You Can't Buy Switzerland's Exceptional Wines Abroad? Why does Switzerland grow so many grape varieties, and which ones are the key players that define the country's wine regions? What makes high-altitude wine regions uniquely capable of producing wines that balance great concentration without being too heavy? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Simon Hardy, author of The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to Switzerland. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks. Good luck! Highlights How did a teenage exchange trip to a small Burgundy wine family spark Simon's lifelong fascination with wine? What did he discover about everyday French wine culture while living with a Burgundian family? How did a simple holiday job in London unexpectedly expand Simon's exposure to the world of wine? What impact did nearly two decades in Switzerland have on Simon's understanding of vineyards, terroir, and regional identity? How did a 30-page free e-book on Swiss wine evolve into a major publishing project? What makes The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to Switzerland different? Why is Switzerland's wine industry so small and so little Swiss wine found abroad? How do Switzerland's six wine regions differ in grapes, climate, language, and vineyard culture? Why does the country grow more Pinot Noir than Chile, yet remain almost invisible in global wine conversations? What makes Chasselas the quiet backbone of Swiss white wine? How do classic Swiss foods showcase the subtlety of Chasselas? What does extreme altitude viticulture reveal about the character of Switzerland's mountain wines? Key Takeaways Why is Swiss wine such a rarity worldwide even though it's highly regarded? As Simon explains, Switzerland… is a small country, but when it comes to the wine sector, virtually everything is relatively small-scale. So in terms of producers of in excess of a million bottles, there are very few of them. The majority are small family-run businesses producing somewhere between 50 to 70,000 bottles a year. It's very rare that a single producer will have a single grape planted and be a specialist and expert in that grape. they would have at least 6 to 10 grape varieties planted, if not even more, and be very proud of the fact that they have this diversity in their vineyards. Each wine is a relatively small quantity and most of it stays in the country. It's less than 2% that gets exported. Why does Switzerland grow so many grape varieties, and which ones are the key players that define the country's wine regions? So other than Chasselas, there's Pinot Noir, which is actually the most planted grape in Switzerland. There's more Pinot Noir produced in Switzerland than in Chile. Gamay, and Merlot. Those are the big four in about two-thirds of the vineyards. you've got an incredibly long list of those 253. lots of very small plantings of… largely insignificant varieties, often experimental. The others I went for were those where they play a significant role within a given region. What makes high-altitude wine regions uniquely capable of producing wines that balance great concentration without being too heavy? I didn't do a word count in the book, but I think the terminology 'alpine freshness' probably gets repeated a few times. This diurnal variation is absolutely critical. You get more than adequate sunlight and sun hours during the day in summer for full ripening, not an issue. But you get these plunging temperatures at night, which helps to maintain the acidity levels. So you get the perfect combination of fresh acidity and phenomenal ripeness. Put the two together, that is probably if there's any calling card. And it's not just Swiss wine. It's the same story in Valtellina, in Aosta Valley in Italy, in Alto Adige, in Savoie. The effect of being in these mountainous areas, where you can plant at altitude but where you have this big drop off in temperature at nighttime. Jacques Majorelle grew up in the soft industrial light of Nancy in north eastern France, the son of Louis Majorelle, a celebrated Art Nouveau furniture designer.Young Jacques was supposed to follow a respectable path into architecture, but painting pulled more strongly. He studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Nancy, then at the Académie Julian in Paris, and began to exhibit as a promising Orientalist painter. The world he painted, however, was not yet his own. Then, illness and chance carried him south, across the Mediterranean, to Morocco.Diarmuid Gavin tells us about the La Majorelle, an iconic garden in Marakaecch.

In this episode of the Independent Thinking Show for @FifthWrist Radio we talk to Marco Guarino from Marc&Darnò. “From the Hills of Piedmont to the Stars”Marco Guarino lives and works in Asti, in a workshop that's also his home. There, he creates no ordinary watches, but mechanical masterpieces that bring the sun, moon, and time into harmony. What started as an evening course turned into a lifelong passion: watches and astronomy.Today, Marco builds complications the world has never seen before — from a moon phase module with an error margin of just 0.03 seconds to the world's first “Lunar Equation” in a wristwatch. His motto? “Never give up because you might be one step away from success.”His dream? To share his knowledge — and soon become a full member of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI).He is currently a Candidate and hopes to take the decisive step next year.If you want to discover how an idea born between stars and gears becomes a watch that pushes the limits of what's possible — tune in to this episode!*** Detailled table of contents below ***Marco is not that confident with English, but we are fortunate enough to have Elio on board, who actually is Italian.Elio is known as @the349designer and in the unlikely case you don't know him, he' got much experience with watches not only as a knowledgable collector, but also as someone who designed two breathtaking individual pieces all by himself; so Elio is the perfect choice on many levels to conduct this interview in Marcos native language. We have subsequently dubbed this with English voice-overs to make it available to a broader audience. Episode 216: The Sound of Protest in Morocco: Nass el Ghiwane and the Years of Lead (1970s-1990s) In her current project, Alessandra Ciucci is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at Columbia University in New York, posits that in order to understand the effectiveness of the songs of Nass el Ghiwane it is critical to examine their musicopoetic assemblage with its rich web of citations and intertextual references, and to acknowledge the force of the band's sound that Moroccans heard as “revolutionary” (thәuri) and with a “protest tone” (nәbra ḥtjajiya). She considers their songs as historical and emotional repositories of an era of profound transformation, as songs bearing witness to an era so marked by political violence and oppression that it came to be referred to as the “years of lead” and, at the same time, giving voice to collective hopes, dreams and aspirations. Ciucci is interested in the possibility that these songs offered in envisioning a different future in an oppressive reality and, just as importantly, the reasons for the musicians to choose the tools they used to capture the ears of a young generation. Alessandra Ciucci's research interests include: the music of Morocco, the Maghreb, the Mediterranean, sung poetry, popular music of the Arab World, music and migration and music and protest. Her first book, The Voice of the Rural: Music, Poetry and Masculinity among Migrant Moroccan Men in Umbria (Chicago University Press 2022), explores the significance and the endurance of a specific notion of the rural ('arubiya) among migrant Moroccan men in Italy. The Arabic translation of her writing on Moroccan professional female singer-dancers (shikhat) and on the musicopoetic genre ‘aiṭa, was published as a collection by the Edition La Croisée des Chemins in partnership with the Académie du Royaume du Maroc. She is currently at work on a new project tentatively titled Nass el Ghiwane: Popular Music and the Sound of Protest in Morocco (1970s-1990s), in which she delves into Nass el Ghiwane, the most influential group to forge a new musicopoetic language utilizing traditional Moroccan culture as a method of decolonization that also provided a sense of contemporary authenticity. Ciucci is the recipient of a number of grants and prizes, among which the Rome Prize in Modern Italian Studies (2018-19). This episode was recorded on July 14, 2023, at the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM). Recorded and edited by: Abdelbaar Mounadi Idrissi, Outreach Director at the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM).
It all began with an invitation: an event organized by GRDF in Rouen to reflect on architecture that “does more with less.” But immediately, the question arose: Architect, who are you? From the stone builders of the Neolithic period to the Greek arkhitéktôn, from the earliest occurrences to the definitions of the Académie Française, Anne-Charlotte Depondt traces the genealogy of the profession back to her own line of architects. Her father was a landscape designer, her uncle Paul Depondt a student of Mies van der Rohe and an advocate of sober, luminous modernity: through them, a lineage of thought and loving rigor emerges. But this lineage is crumbling in the contemporary turmoil. Today's architects, often caught up in image and speed, seem to have forgotten their primary mission: to provide shelter for humans.Anne-Charlotte questions the lost meaning, the reign of the artificial, the temptation of the virtual where everything is built without substance. Quoting Arendt and Jankélévitch, she reminds us that thought alone is the foundation of ethics, that “evil comes from an inability to think.”Architecture is not just a form: it is a moral act, a fidelity to life, a resistance to emptiness. Thus, beyond fads and quarrels, she calls for a requirement: to be upright, in humanity. And to close the circle on the event in Rouen—because building better today means first and foremost rediscovering the meaning of the word “architect.”This English version was generated using AI with voice cloning, preserving the speakers' timbre (Anne-Charlotte) and their natural French accent.Audio production comdarchipodcastImage teaser © Blonde Woman Walking Through a Luxury Shopping Mall by Kuroneko Mac Generated using AI___If you like the podcast do not hesitate:. to subscribe so you don't miss the next episodes,. to leave us stars and a comment :-),. to follow us on Instagram @comdarchipodcast to find beautiful images, always chosen with care, so as to enrich your view on the subject.Nice week to all of you !
