In this episode, I interview Danielle Allen, a business leader and co-founder of Two Birds Brewing, a brewing company based in Melbourne, Australia, developing and manufacturing craft beers for retail and on-premise sales in venues across Australia. This is Australia's first female-owned brewing company.  Danielle, together with her friend Jayne Lewis began their journey in the Craft Beer industry after their two-week trip in the West Coast of the US in 2010 where they visited breweries, wineries and dined at some world-renowned restaurants. Jayne was originally a winemaker by trade but transitioned into brewing while Danielle had been in product development and marketing for 10 years. With their complementary skills, Two Birds Brewing was born.  According to Danielle, the hardest thing in growing a small business is the commitment to work. Commitment to work involves many things for the excellence of the business. This is why every business owner must develop the self-discipline to execute the tasks needed to be done.  This Cast Covers:    Started their own brewing company after their two-week tour on the West Coast of the US in 2010.   Visited breweries, wineries, and dined at some world-renowned restaurants during the trip, and shared love for the finer delights.  Gave up their full-time jobs and began their journey in the Craft Beer industry.  Their skills were complementary and it made total sense for them to team up.  Launched their first beer together in 2011 and have been growing and building the business every year since then.  Developing and manufacturing craft beers for retail and on-premise sales in venues across Australia. Making well-balanced and approachable beers and find impressive by their consumers.  The importance of originality when it comes to making their products and how being firm to the vision made them successful.  How commitment is crucial yet important in growing a small business.  How understanding each other's role results in growth and development which are essential in growing a small business.  Additional Resources:  Two Birds Brewing Brewing Up a Business By Sam Calagione The Microbrewery Handbook By DC Reeves ………………………………………… Quotes:  “Stay true to yourself, don't copy other people, have a firm view of your vision, and just stick to it.”  —Danielle Allen  “You can drive the business forward by making sure that the connection between sales and marketing continuously works.” —Danielle Allen “It is worth getting people that share the same values that you have.” —Danielle Allen “Understand each other on a personal level, and understand each other's roles as well. Pershore, England lockdown sound recorded by Jayne Lewis. "Behind where I live are the community meadows. Everyday people are walking across the meadows and parallel ‘people tracks’ are being marked through knee high buttercups. Today I saw three cygnets hatch beneath a swan who has been sitting each day for six weeks. People have shown such engaged protective interest in the two breeding pairs of swans this year who have sat on their eggs during this whole lockdown.  "Yesterday I saw 6 cygnets in another swan family emerge onto a lake for their first swim. Usually at this time you hear above everything the calls of the cuckoo both male and female. They cut across everything.  "Today, with so little traffic or sounds from workplaces, I was able to watch and listen to this solitary sedge warbler. It was particularly special as this is the bird that the cuckoo parasites to raise its own chicks.  "Last night I sang and played the clarinet, my husband played his alto saxophone and the neighbour opposite played her clarinet for the song We’ll Meet Again after the Clap for Carers on the pavement. The neighbour’s husband was in Trafalgar Square in the midst of the VE Day celebrations. He is a frail older gentleman and was determined to cross the road to tell us his story whilst we carefully retreated as he came closer and closer to tell us, he doesn’t understand the invisible enemy that is amongst us at present." Thanks to Bintani this is a special edition of Radio Brews News, live from the West Australian Brewers Association Craft Brewers Conference. Two Birds co-founder, Jayne Lewis, opened the conference with her keynote. Jayne eschewed the usual keynote update and platitudes by addressing some of the important issues the industry has been tackling and she address them head on, but in a very supportive way. We didn’t initially plan to podcast the keynote, but it was a message that we think everyone should hear. Matt followed up with Jayne after for a bit more of a chat about what she said and why it was important right now. We thank Bintani for working with us to provide you with the best industry event coverage – let them work for you by providing the best ingredient for your beer. What can you say, two weeks in a row and all because you wanted to hear it. This week after we have a bit of a chat about stuff that wanders all over the beer map, we catch up with Steve 'Hendo' Henderson, brewer at Southern Bay Brewing. In a wide ranging chat we talk about Hendo's career, his plans for Southern Bay, contract brewing and even tap contracts, which sees Matt almost defend big brewers and tap contracts. We also enjoy a cameo from Two Bird's Jayne Lewis who joins us via a squeaky lab door. For those who listen to the end, you might even get the chance to win some brewery schwag... Our upbeat end tune is Bobby Vinton's rendition of Beer Barrel Polka from his album Greatest Polka Hits of All Time. You can buy it here, if by any chance it's not already in your collection.

Please keep your feedback coming. This week there were no sound issues (at least not to my untrained ear) and we had a great chat to former Mountain Goat brewer Jayne Lewis who is about to launch her own beer brand, Two Birds Brewing. Follow her on Facebook and Twitter. In addition to speaking with Jayne, you will hear Matt & Pete discuss: 1:00 – The reaction to Pete's article about contract brewing. 3:15 – Matt uses Waikikamukau as if it was a real place…apologies to our many NZ listeners for any offence, I couldn't think of a real name. 9:30 – That sound you hear throughout is Matt rubbing his hands. It was cold, what can I say. 10:00 – Beer Lover's Guide to Australia beer writing comp results. 10:45 – We get the show back on track and speak with Jayne Lewis 30:00 – A look at upcoming shows, including a discussion of the fact that no one seems to want to discuss tap contracts.
