Parent supporting their child in sports is becoming a problem. Some parents are too focused on their child winning at all costs, completely neglecting its reason to help develop their child's growth. Thus, coaches or mentors need to emphasize the criticalness of long-term athlete development rather than just winning games. Also, coaches need to push children to improve, even if it means failing or being benched at times, and parents need to understand and support the coach's methodology of prioritizing resilience and growth over immediate results. Jeff LoVecchio is a former professional hockey player who played in the NHL and overseas for nine years. He is now a successful strength and conditioning coach who owns his training business. In this episode, Jeff shares the changing dynamics in youth sports, the importance of long-term development, and strategies for consistently improving skills. Tune in as he answers questions about life, youth development, parenting, mentoring, and more! Quotes: "If you want something, you have to invest in yourself." – Jeff LoVecchio "If you're passionate about something, put yourself in front on purpose, you're going to stumble, you're going to fall, you're going to make mistakes, but you're pushing yourself." – Jeff LoVecchio "Consistency is the most important thing in life to be successful." – Jeff LoVecchio Takeaways: Focus on helping kids explore different sports and activities early on to build their skills for the future rather than just aiming for immediate results. Keep practicing and getting better every day, even on breaks, because minor improvements gradually make a big difference, whether in sports or other parts of life. It's crucial to develop resilience by learning how to bounce back from difficulties. People can overcome failures and setbacks by working hard and staying dedicated, paving the way for lasting success and fulfillment. Conclusion: Putting long-term growth ahead of quick wins is crucial, especially for young athletes. Good communication between coaches and parents helps set clear goals. Teaching values like consistency, bouncing back from failures, and teamwork can shape strong character and boost performance.

In this episode of Cured Collective Podcast, we sit down with Jeff Lovecchio for a thoughtful, inspiring, and well-rounded conversation. Jeff is a former NHL player and successfully played in the league for ten years. After a series of injuries ended his career, he learned to infuse his passion for movement into a thriving coaching business. In the episode, Jeff describes his relationship with discipline and its onset at an incredibly early age. He explains how his commitment to outworking his fellow hockey players ultimately catalyzed his transformation into a professional player. While other kids were enjoying their summer or other young adults were going out for drinks, you could consistently find Jeff putting in time on the rink. Throughout his many years spent training (and rehabilitating injuries), Jeff discovered gaps in the current model of athletic training and sports performance. Specifically, in the way athletes were training in the gym and how this wasn't transferring to their performance in their sport. This inspired Jeff to not only reevaluate his own training methods, but to introduce the same functional, dynamic, power-focused movements to the athletes he now coaches in St. Louis, Missouri. Wondering what this looks like? Just try sprinting at your max-out speed while trying to read a sign pinned on an adjacent wall. This episode is one that will inspire you to move your body in the way it was always designed to. Tune in! “If you have kids and you're listening to this, or if you want to have kids, put them in a team sport. Not because you want them to be a pro athlete, but because it is a metaphor for life and it teaches you all of the things you need to learn to be successful.” – Jeff Lovecchio Key Highlights What initiated Jeff's journey toward a career as an NHL athlete; What Jeff believes distinguished him from other athletes; Why discipline is the key to unlocking our minds' and bodies' ultimate potential; Jeff's experience with concussions and traumatic brain injuries, and if he would change anything if he could go back in time; When Jeff first felt a passion for helping others learn how to reach their maximum potential; How Jeff rebuilt his confidence following one of his most serious concussions and injuries; How to understand the difference between ‘working harder' and ‘working smarter'; Which words of advice Jeff would offer to anyone currently in their twenties and thirties. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Leaders are not exempt from adversity and obstacles. In fact, if anything, leaders have a larger target on our backs when it comes to challenges. If you're listening to this podcast, that means you are a dad and or husband, and that makes you a leader. Today, my guest, Jeff LoVecchio, former professional hockey player, shares his journey as a leader in the NHL, the adversity he faced, and how he led himself and his team despite his challenges and the success that came from it. Jeff LoVecchio is a former professional hockey player and personal trainer. He grew up in my backyard, St. Louis. Through hard work and dedication, self-discipline, he willed himself into a division one scholarship at Western Michigan University. After 3 years at Western Michigan University, he signed with the Boston Bruins for 3 years before being traded to the Florida Panthers, Providence Bruins, Florida Panthers for their AHL team for a season and a half. Unfortunately, he sustained multiple injuries, including multiple concussions and it was decided that it would be best for his career and longevity to start playing overseas. Then over the next six years he was fortunate enough to play in the top leagues in Italy, Norway, Austria and Asia, living in places that had different values and societal norms than what we are accustomed to over in the U.S. Show Notes: www.thedadedge.com/396

Many consider ice hockey to be the ultimate team game. A culture developed over 100 years emphasizes that no one is above the game, the team comes first, and the term “we” instead of “I” is most used whenever players discuss the game. The fire service attracts people from all walks of life; it truly is a direct reflection of the community. Many who join the fire service have been involved and/or enjoy athletics for the “team” aspect it provides. In the fire department we work and live in teams. Though not as high profile as major sports the team aspect of our job is just as important. This episode we look outside of the fire service family to gain some insight and perspective on leadership. We are joined by Topher Scott and Jeff Lovecchio of the Hockey Think Tank podcast; two former high level hockey players who have a passion for leadership and team building. Topher Scott is a consultant who works with clients across the country to up their leadership and team building skill and ability. Topher played NCAA Division 1 ice hockey at Cornell and has been on all sides of the game including player, coach, and scout. He shows a great understanding and a deep appreciation of leadership and how it effects the game that he has been a part of his whole life. Jeff Lovecchio has a great love for leadership and how it effects our everyday lives. He has played hockey at the highest level by playing NCAA Division 1 ice hockey at Western Michigan and 10 years professionally including time with the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins. Jeff has built a sterling reputation using mental and physical fitness to assist his clients in reaching new heights. If you would like to speak to Jeff about personal or group leadership and team building, you can reach him at thehockeythinktank.com. You can also access his workouts using the Train Heroic app on your phone. Come sit down at the Kitchen Table and have a listen, be ready to learn, and discover some of the differences between high level athletics and fire service leadership…I'm sure you'll find many things that are the same as well!!! Give More Be More...Jeff LoVecchio, a retired professional hockey player, embodies this mantra in all aspects of his life.
This week I have the pleasure of bringing Jeff Lovecchio on the podcast. Jeff is the owner of RIPT Hockey Training and host of the extremely popular Hockey Think Tank Podcast. Throughout this interview Jeff makes so many important points for young athletes to take away. However I think the best way to sum these points up is right in the title. The little details amount to massive changes. If you are trying to set yourself up for a longer, more successful career in sport, there is nothing flashy about what you need to do. It is all about the little details. Getting a good night sleep, eating the right foods, taking proper care of your body. The longer and more consistently you have been doing these things, the better athlete you will become. In this interview Jeff does an incredible job of laying out these factors, how he approached them and the MASSIVE difference they made in his career. Beyond that, he also lays out how YOU can approach them as well. I highly encourage you to get out a notebook for this one. No matter what sport you play, Jeff gives great advice on what you can do to extend your career longer than you ever thought possible. Put the accountability on yourself and GET TO WORK! Fred Pletsch joined me on this episode, we talked with Jeff about his roots in hockey in St. Louis, MO, to his tryout with the Omaha Lancers in the USHL, to his commitment to Western Michigan, a school that wasn't even on his radar when his college recruitment was going on. After 3 years playing in the CCHA at Western MIchigan, Jeff signed a pro deal with the Providence Bruins of the AHL, Boston's top farm team. Due to concussion issues, he had to sit out for a full year, concussions eventually made Jeff decide to walk away from the game, he had several in his career and talks openly about dealing with concussions. From the AHL, Jeff went to Europe and played pro, eventually he was playing pro hockey in Asia. After his playing career concluded, Jeff set his sights on staying involved in the game of hockey, he now owns RIPT Hockey in St. Louis, MO, where he trains and works with pro players in the NHL and AHL, his business is doing good and we discussed that as well!
