Purchase Daniels Book -  Hard Feelings: Finding the Wisdom in Our Darkest EmotionsIn this episode of Top Self, Shanenn sits down with psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Smith to explore a question most of us never stop to ask:What if the emotions you're trying hardest to get rid of are actually trying to help you?Whether it's jealousy, shame, envy, regret, or anxiety, many of us spend our lives chasing relief—seeking reassurance, distracting ourselves, or trying to think our way out of uncomfortable feelings. But according to Daniel, our darkest emotions aren't problems to eliminate. They're messengers carrying important information about who we are, what we fear, and what needs our attention.Together, Shanenn and Daniel talk about why self-criticism often causes more damage than the original emotion, how shame keeps us trapped in painful cycles, and why curiosity may be one of the most powerful tools for healing. If you've ever wondered why you keep having the same emotional reactions despite knowing "better," this conversation is for you.Golden Episode Nuggets:

Inflation, recession, global conflict, and post-pandemic exhaustion. Leaders today are operating under unprecedented levels of pressure, and many are finding that their own—and their team's—"fuses are getting shorter and shorter." In this archive episode of  Connected Leadership Bytes, Andy Lopata sits down with international speaker and serenity expert Martin Laschkolnig to discuss how leaders can maintain their composure when surrounded by crisis. Drawing on decades of business experience, Buddhist philosophy, and energy psychology, Martin explains why trying to "fix" a traumatised team member is the worst thing a leader can do, and why serenity is a muscle that must be trained before the crisis hits. If you want to stop reacting on autopilot and start leading with profound inner peace, this episode provides the practical tools you need to widen the space between event and reaction. 5 Key Takeaways: The Crisis Intervention Rule of 3: Discover the three essential steps leaders must take when a team member is in a crisis (and why "offering a solution" isn't one of them). The Limits of the "Fixer": Why jumping straight to "fix-it mode" can alienate your team, and why people need to feel "seen in their misery" before they can accept a solution. The Monkey Mind vs. The Sphere of Influence: How the "monkey mind's" desire to control everything causes burnout, and how to reclaim your power by focusing only on what you can actually influence. The "NATO" Mindset: How adopting the "Not Attached to the Outcome" philosophy can instantly reduce leadership stress in target-driven corporate environments. The Separation of Self and Problem: The profound psychological shift of realising "I have a problem, but I am not the problem," and why self-compassion is crucial for crisis management.  3 Actionable Insights Stop Giving Verbal Instructions in a Crisis: When an employee is overwhelmed or traumatised, always provide the next steps (e.g., "Go see HR") in writing or via a simple checklist to ensure they actually get the support they need. Defuse the Stress Hormones Daily: Do not wait for the weekend or a crisis to relax. Build a daily "micro-routine", whether it's five minutes of conscious breathing, digging in the garden, or taking a walk. Consistent, small steps build the foundation of resilience you will need when a storm hits. Widen the Space Between Event and Reaction: When you feel a strong emotion (like fear or anger) rising, do not react on autopilot. Step away. Take a few deep breaths. Create space to evaluate whether acting on that emotion will benefit you, or if it is better to let it pass. Your reaction determines the outcome; make sure it is a conscious choice. Their conversation explores how unresolved trauma, chronic stress, fear, and self-protection can affect decision-making, relationships, health, and overall performance in life and work. Together, they discuss emotional regulation, accountability, identity, mindset, nervous system patterns, and the role of self-awareness in personal transformation. The episode also examines why many people stay stuck in familiar cycles, how limiting beliefs can shape outcomes, and why healing often begins by addressing what has been ignored internally for years. Elizabeth Carson also shares her perspective on mitochondria, stress, inflammation, and the relationship between physical health and emotional wellbeing. The discussion bridges personal development and wellness in a way that is relevant for entrepreneurs, professionals, leaders, and anyone trying to build a better life from the inside out. Brooklyn-based psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Smith has a motto: Feel everything, don't look away. But how exactly are men supposed to confront some of the most challenging emotions in their lives, especially when society tells them to suppress or even ignore feelings like shame, envy or regret? On this episode of Paternal, Smith examines our relationship to what he calls "Hard Feelings," and why reconsidering how we relate to these emotions can be beneficial for men as they become fathers. He also recounts his own story of growing up with a father who lingered at an emotional distance, and why modeling that emotions are off-limits can lead to shame and anger in our kids. Smith is the author of the 2012 memoir Monkey Mind and the new release Hard Feelings, available wherever you buy books.

Sun Wukong - How To Discipline Your Monkey Mind (Taoism).  In this podcast, we're going to look at how to Discipline Your Monkey Mind through the taoist philosophy of “Sun Wukong."Sun Wukong is the legendary protagonist of the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. He is a god-tier monkey king and a warrior who can leap across the sky and shift into 72 different forms. But unlike other mythic figures, Wukong began his journey as a mortal slave to his own impulses. He was reckless, impulsive, and his own worst enemy. His transformation from a rebellious monster into an enlightened master is a psychological blueprint for every man who feels like a victim of his own talent; the man who is ambitious but lazy, talented but distracted. Most of us live like the early Wukong. We all have an inner unruly monkey - that part of your brain that craves distraction, avoids work, and chases cheap dopamine. We have the gifts, but this monkey keeps us trapped in a cycle of aimless impulse and keeps us stuck or invisible despite our potential. The problem is that we're fighting the world when we should be mastering that monkey. So here are ways to Master Your Unruly Monkey Mind through the taoist philosophy of “Sun Wukong."01. Designed as a "Personal Leadership Gym," this book rejects the traditional, dense management manual in favor of high-impact daily doses of wisdom. Porter explains that he chose the unique 369-day format—rather than the standard 365—to meet busy, over-stimulated leaders exactly where they are: in the "messy middle" of high-stakes conversations and the "pinnacle of complexity." This isn't just a book to be read; it is a repetitive daily practice designed to shift a leader's internal vibration, forcing them to choose courage over comfort and master the relentless art of execution.

Register for the free classes, Continuing the Walk for Peace: An Inner Peace Toolkit: https://buddhismforeveryone.com/walk-for-peace-toolkit In this episode, we talk about your monkey. The monkey on your back.   You know the one. The brilliant, overachieving, slightly unhinged creature swinging through your mind at 2:00 a.m. reorganizing your life, replaying arguments, drafting emails you will never send.   In an old Buddhist story, a man is given a magical monkey by his spiritual teacher. The magical monkey can do anything. Grant any wish.   At first, it's amazing. The monkey builds him a palace! But then comes the problem. "Now what?" the monkey asks. "What next?" "More! More!"   Day and night, the monkey pesters him. The man can't rest. He can hardly sleep at night.   Finally, he returns to the Buddhist master and begs for his help.  The master gives him a single curly hair and says, "Have the monkey make this straight."   The monkey pulls it straight. It springs back. He pulls it again. It springs back again. The monkey sits down, completely absorbed in concentration. In mindfulness, the monkey becomes peaceful. And the man finally sleeps. That's the secret.   You don't get rid of the monkey mind. You give it something simple and steady to do. Breathe. Be present.   Enter: the breath. When your thoughts are racing, don't argue with them. Don't try to solve your entire existence before lunch. Just gently anchor your attention to one full inhale… and one full exhale.   Feel the air enter your nose. Feel the air in your body as you breathe deeply and slowly. Watch the breath leaving your nostrils.   That's it.   The breath is your curly hair. It keeps bouncing back. There's always another inhalation, another exhalation. Your mind will wander. Of course it will. That's what monkeys do. When you notice, kindly guide it back. No judgment. No spiritual performance review.   Just come home to the present moment.   The present moment is not dramatic. It's not flashy. But it is peaceful. And when you anchor yourself here, even for a few breaths, the monkey in the jungle quiets. You do not have to straighten every curly hair in your life. You just have to come home to the breath. And in that simple returning, again and again, the wild monkey becomes your ally. Your friend. "Don't run back to the past, don't anticipate the future. the future has not arrived;   and any present phenomenon you clearly discern in every case. The unfaltering, the unshakable: having known that, foster it.   Today's the day to keenly work— who knows, tomorrow may bring death! For there is no bargain to be struck with Death and his mighty horde.   One who keenly meditates like this, tireless all night and day: that's who has one fine night— so declares the peaceful sage. —Buddha, One Fine Night Sutra References and Links Buddha. This week on The Unbeatable Mind, Catherine Divine returns to discuss the second of the five mountains—-the ‘mental mountain!' This mountain serves as a pathway towards developing important skills like creativity, compassion, intuition, and insight.    Together, Mark and Catherine explore the many intricacies of the mind, and delve into concepts like critical thinking and cognitive bias. They muse on the development of uniquely human skills—skills that are without a doubt essential for thriving in the age of artificial intelligence. Practical techniques—-such as box breathing and mindfulness are discussed as practices to assist in taming one's ‘monkey mind', and developing a focussed and resilient mental state.    Key Takeaways: Cognitive Bias & Critical Thinking: Understand the filters placed upon our mind by social conditioning and the limits of our own perception—-and how this relates to thinking critically. Developing Mental Discipline: Learn various practical techniques to apply in the development of mental discipline, and recognize the necessity of calmness.  Free Will & Ego Death: Ponder the idea that free will is something that must be earned through mental training and the ‘fortification' of the ego.    Catherine Divine is a leadership coach, author, and yoga instructor with over 20 years of experience helping leaders unlock their full potential. Coauthor of Kokoro Yoga with her stepfather, Mark Divine, and author of Sacred Silence, Catherine holds a Master's in Transformative Leadership from CIIS and is pursuing a PhD in East-West Psychology. As a Master Unbeatable Mind Coach, she has trained C-suite executives, Special Ops candidates, and high-performance leaders, guiding them to integrate mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and resilience. Catherine combines intuitive healing with strategic insight to help leaders overcome challenges, heal from trauma, and strengthen their mind-body-soul connection.    Catherine's Links:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/catherinec1/  Kokoro Yoga: https://unbeatablemind.com/kokoro-yoga/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CatherineDivineYoga/   Sponsors and Promotions:   Defender: The highest achievers among us are the people still striving, still reaching for something. Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 683 Wellness + Wisdom Podcast Host and Wellness Force Media CEO, Josh Trent, shares the 7 practical steps to stop overthinking that he's learned through years of experience and interviewing hundreds of experts. Today's Question Holly: Beautiful conversation! Just discovered your podcast. Especially loved the parts that touched on capacity switching. We can be more fluid and switch gears with fluidity when we are feeling safe and can drop into the present moment.   If there's a topic that you'd like us to cover in the next AMA episode, record your message HERE. Listen To Episode 683 As Josh Trent Answers Your Questions [00:00] Intro What's up everybody, it's Josh Trent. This is Wellness + Wisdom, the place where we always look at the 5 sides of ourselves. What are those sides? Why are they important? What brought you here? You read the title, there's something in your heart and soul that got you to this place and it's this mastery concept of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and financial nourishment or starving of yourself. We call this the Wellness Pentagon and on these AMAs, they're called to ask me anything. They actually could be Ask Mar Anything because Mar's my co-pilot and I just realized that AMA has your letters in the title, Ask Mar Anything. Mar is our content manager. I am the host of this podcast. We've been going for almost a decade, which is crazy. It's fricking crazy to think about. But I've come across so much wisdom that I'm happy to share with you and Mar on her own spiritual path... [04:50] Depression + Anxiety... Anxiety comes in and it says, you should fear the future. You should ruminate on the future. Which really, I believe from my own work, that anxiety is essentially just a lack of self-trust that you'll be able to handle whatever the future brings. I know that's a new twist on anxiety, but if you're experiencing depression, it's the opposite, right? It's this rumination, this marinade on how you fucked up in the past or what happened to you instead of for you. It's this pulling you in the other direction out of the present moment. And I feel like whether it's anxiety or depression, both, they both come from the same place, and that is fear. And I'm not trying to reductionize this, although it sounds pretty reduced. It really is this simple. And in these 7 practices that we're gonna go over, they are simple, but it does not mean that they're going to be always easy, right? Because a lot of this, all of this comes from self-love. Like Mar, the things we're gonna go over today, and they're really actionable, like these are awesome things. Can somebody do any of these if they don't actually take a breath and choose to love enough to do it in the first place? Possibly not, I would say. I've been there. I've been in that place where I wasn't choosing myself, I didn't love myself enough so I made choices that were not right for me. And I did make the intent to do some breathwork and do some meditation, but it was so hard to do that. I was pushing myself, forcing myself to do it, but it didn't really help me at that moment. Yeah, that's a good point. That's a really good point. There are some moments where we choose to be it until we see it, not fake it until you make it. You can, even with the overwhelming anxiety and depression that somebody might be feeling, you can still set an evidence point outside yourself that you are, even if you don't feel worthy of it, that you are worthy of it. In other words, you don't have to feel worthy or feel loved in order to push yourself to your edge, to your uncomfortableness. [10:15] 7 Steps to Stop Overthinking This question is from @HollyZ9458 on YouTube. What did Holly say? She says: Beautiful conversation! Just discovered your podcast. Especially loved the parts that touched on capacity switching. We can be more fluid and switch gears with fluidity when we are feeling safe & can drop into the present moment. That's a good point, isn't it? She said this keyword, drop. So I always, and this is reverse engineering, whenever you hear something that you would to have that you don't currently have, or whenever you hear a problem, the answer, the love, the solution, is always 100% of the time encapsulated in the very question itself. I have never seen this prove me wrong. So if our goal is to drop into the body and drop into the present moment, then what are the ways in which we allow ourselves to be pulled out of it physically, emotionally, spiritually? So just, that's actually the path. And in the finance world, I heard somebody talk about this. I think it was 1 of those 2 big investors from Berkshire Hathaway. He was like, I always reverse engineer my life. I think about what are the things that could pull me out of the good and into the bad or the uncomfortable, and I just plan accordingly. So, Holly, this is beautiful because yes, you remind us that it's our loving responsibility to drop, stop what you're doing, and drop into the present moment. So the first thing I'm gonna talk about today, 1 of 7, is to stop overthinking, stop overthinking. Step number one is to breathe. It's so funny, we were searching for something here in the studio, I don't know if you remember this, and it was like right in the studio. I forget what it was, and I'm like, how many times have we been searching for something? Oh, you were looking for keys and you were holding them in your hand. Yes. Mar's like, where's the keys? And she's holding them. How many times do we hold something in our hand or is the answer right under our nose, but we just don't stop and drop and be aware of it? This is what breathwork is. It's right under your nose y'all. With me, take a big breath in through your nose and fill your belly for 2 seconds. Breathe it out. Do that 3 more times while I'm sharing with you. There is a bounty of content at JoshTrent.com/Podcast, search "breathwork." Probably 50 different pieces of beautiful, beautiful episodes and content that'll with you why I believe breathwork is the beginning of everything. I think if you're really wanting to embrace the now, you can't hold your breath. You just can't, it's impossible...Leave Wellness + Wisdom a Review on Apple Podcasts Links From Today's Show  668 Evolve Your Consciousness: The True Healing Work To BE An Adult, Learn How To Love + Live A Thriving Life | Margo Running JoshTrent.com/Podcast SaunaSpace - 10% off with discount code JOSH10 MANNA Vitality - 20% off with the code JOSH20
