When I say the word witness what comes to mind?  Maybe at first it is the Jehovah's Witnesses.  Or maybe you think of evangelism and witnessing.  Perhaps you think of the Great Commission and recognize the call to be witnesses to all nations.  I am sure that some of you even think of the legal aspect of being a witness, as bearing testimony to historical realities.  Some with a little Greek might even know that the Greek word for ‘witness' is martureo from which we get our English word martyr.  Today as we continue looking at Jesus Great Commission in Luke's gospel we want to note two aspects, firstly we want to go to the OT and look at the biblical background to this concept of what a witness is for.  We will see how this will give us focus as we go about being witnesses.  Secondly, we want to recognize that the Spirit has been given to empower our witness.  So our two points are God's purposes for witnesses; and God's empowering of witnesses Source

Are You Prepared to Face Your Death? Have You Prepared Your Family for Your Death and Led them on a Path to Their Eternal Life? MESSAGE SUMMARY: Most of us do not like to think about and plan for death, especially our own. However, Paul in. Romans 6:23, made your life and death position very clear: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.". As part of your preparations for eternity, you should take one time each year to evaluate and to reflect on your position for facing death and realizing eternal life by identifying those changes that you must make in your life and in your relationship with God. This preparation for your death will be a blessing for you and your family. Are you prepared to face your death? Will you have eternal life? What about those you leave behind – are you being a good steward?  Also, what about your family? Is your family prepared for your earthly death and their earthly death; and have you led your family on a path to receive their eternal life? In Matthew 28:18, Jesus gave us His Great Commission for your life focus: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.". Have you followed Jesus’ Great Commission, for your own family, by making disciples of your family members?   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Past Failures. Rather, I will abide in the Lord’s Grace. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). To Be a “Jesus Follower and then NOT Following Jesus “Great Commission” to “go and making disciples” Is Your “Great Omission”

To Be a “Jesus Follower and then NOT Following Jesus “Great Commission” to “go and making disciples” Is Your “Great Omission” MESSAGE SUMMARY: God said told all Jesus Followers to “go and make disciples” not to “make decisions”. In other words, we are to bring the Gospel to others with whom we have or with whom we develop a personal relationship. Therefore, we are to leave the “conversion” or the “decision” of others to become a Christian up to the Holy Spirit. Our job, as Jesus Followers, is to “go and make disciples”. In Jesus’ last instructions to His Apostles and to you, before His Ascension to Heaven from Earth, is in Mathew 28:16-20 -- Jesus’ Great Commission: “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”. A disciple is a student, a follower, a learner. Making a disciple is not about classes. Making a disciple it about investing yourself in the life of another person – discipling is having a personal relationship with another person so that they see the life of Christ in you. Have you been discipled, or have you made a disciple? Not “going and making disciples” is your “great omission” as a Christian.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I will proclaim Him. (Philippians 1:15f). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV):  Mathew 28:16-20; Mathew 9:36-38; Mathew 10:16-33; Psalms 115:1-18. Archbishop Vigneron, Mary Wilkerson, and guest host Erik Coules discuss the transition to Families of Parishes, including its impacts on parish staff and clergy, and what went into identifying family groupings. Show Notes: (1:30) Archbishop Vigneron gives brief updates on how his month has been, the work he and his leadership team have been doing to help mitigate the virus, and the continued work towards the transition to Families of Parishes. He also reflects on the holiness of the month of November. (3:20) Archbishop discusses other successes and challenges that have arisen over the past month and shares a bit about his Thanksgiving and the blessings we can find in unconventional celebrations. (9:23) Mary refreshes our memories of the announcement to move our archdiocese to a Families of Parishes structure, and Archbishop shares more about why the decision was made, what a ‘family of parishes’ is, and where the inspiration for this shift came from. (14:20) Archbishop discusses more of the specific process behind identifying parish groupings and the sorts of considerations that were made in determining families. (18:36) Mary asks about the effect the groupings will have on the presence of clergy within the parishes, and Archbishop overviews what plans there are for the waves of the transition and whether he anticipates the movement of any priests. (20:53) Next, Erik asks about the possible effects on parish staffs. While recognizing that there is no one model by which every family can make these adjustments, Archbishop discusses a playbook that has been developed to help pastors and families navigate the changes. (25:00) Archbishop discusses this transition as a fruit of the Synod and our calling to evaluate all of the structures we currently have in place for the mission. Mary overviews the pastoral note Led by the Spirit on Mission and how it can help the faithful prepare for this move, and Archbishop reflects on how the move carries out Jesus’ Great Commission. (29:38) Erik asks Archbishop Vigneron what key message he hopes readers of Led by the Spirit on Mission will take away from the note, and Archbishop answers simply: courage. (33:40) Archbishop shares his vision of how our coming together as families of parishes is part of the work of being joyful missionary disciples and sharing the Good News.

SPECIAL DEVOTIONAL VIDEO In these Difficult Times, Take Heart! Christianity Is On the Move to All Nations: “you will be my witnesses . . . to the end of the earth”   MESSAGE SUMMARY: Many of our church buildings are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are learning to live with increasing uncertainty. Therefore, we pray that this devotional video, of the Nicaean Creed being spoken by Anglicans from around the World and global Anglicans meeting at the Jerusalem Temple Wall, is a helpful encouragement to you in these difficult times. From this video, we see that Christianity is on the move to all nations and “to the end of the earth”. Please join A Word From The Lord as we follow Jesus’ Great Commission of “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . .” and Jesus’ instructions to His Disciples and to us at His Ascension: “. . . and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”. As Jesus told His Disciples, in Acts 1:8-9a: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up . . .”. Also, we are promised again  in Acts 2:21: "And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.". Nicaean Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.   We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.   We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,     and the life of the world to come. Amen You can visit our Website at awftl.org or awordfromthelord.org, and we pray that you experience A Word From The Lord. NOTE: The first segment of included video is the Nicene Creed being recited by many members of the Gafcon Anglican family from around the world, beginning with Archbishop Foley Beach. Additionally, the video’s second segment is a gathering of Global Anglicans at the Jerusalem Temple Wall.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FORGIVEN. Jesus Always Expected His Followers to “GO”, but His “Great Commission” Is for Us to “MAKE DISCIPLES”   MESSAGE SUMMARY:   God said to go, and to make disciples.  God did not say to go and to make decisions. Jesus’ last instructions to His Apostles and to you, before His Ascension to Heaven from Earth, is in Mathew 28:16-20, which is Jesus’ Great Commission. In His Great Commission, Jesus’ “command” or “commission” for us  was not “go” because the Greek for this passage is translated to “As You Go” – Jesus was already expecting us to “go”. Rather, the commission in this passage is to “make disciples”: “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Making a disciple it about investing yourself in the life of another person, Discipling is having a relationship with another person so that they see the life of Christ in you. Have you been discipled, or have you made a disciple? Not being “discipled” or  “discipling” are the “great omissions”.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, because of I am filled with the Holy Spirit, I will not be controlled by my inconsistencies. Rather, I will walk in the Spirit’s fruit of Faithfulness. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22f). A mystery in Paul's writing is not normally something “mysterious,” still less a whodunit. It is a truth or a doctrine which in some measure has been kept hidden in previous generations, and now with the coming of the Gospel has been disclosed and made public. Sometimes the Gospel itself is treated as a mystery; more commonly, some element of the Gospel is labeled a mystery. In Ephesians 3:2–13, Paul insists that, along with other “apostles and prophets” (Eph. 3:5), he enjoys deep insight into “the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit” (Eph. 3:4–5). Then he tells us the content of this mystery: “that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 3:6).We should reflect on the ways in which this mystery was hidden. Certainly the Old Testament Scriptures sometimes anticipate the extension of the grace of God to men and women of all races. The Abrahamic covenant foresaw that in Abraham’s seed all the nations of the earth would be blessed (Gen. 12:3; see meditation for January 11). What is hidden about that? Yet the fact remains that the space devoted in the Bible to the Law of Moses, coupled more importantly with the rising body of interpretation that made Mosaic Law the interpretive grid that controlled the reading of much of the Old Testament, ensured that this broader emphasis was often lost to view. So on the one hand, this hiddenness can be viewed as a careful plan of God to hide the glory of “his eternal purpose” (Eph. 3:11) until the time was ripe for it to be unfolded; on the other, this hiddenness owes something to human perversity, reading the Old Testament Scriptures in a way that domesticates and dwarfs the true dimensions of Old Testament promises. With the coming of Christ Jesus, the ways in which the Old Testament books pointed forward were made incalculably clearer. Jesus’ Great Commission stamped the mission of his disciples with an internationalism that shames all parochialism. Above all, Jesus’ understanding of the Old Testament established some new paradigms. Read properly, in its linear, historical sequence, the Old Testament storyline does not lay as much emphasis on the Law of Moses as some thought. Indeed, the Mosaic Covenant turns out to be a failure, in terms of how well it changed people. Its brightest success is in providing the models that predict what the ultimate Savior, the ultimate priest, the ultimate temple, the ultimate sacrifice, would look like. And Paul is the apostle who not only preaches this mystery, but does so to the Gentiles, the people most affected by its content. This podcast is designed to be used alongside TGC's Read The Bible initiative (TGC.org/readthebible). Intro: I am sure you heard of the saying, "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!". Acts 5:12-42 gives us the story of the early church when the heat is turned up on the Apostles, Christ Followers, and the Church. One of the aspects which I admire of the U. S. military is than men and women are trained to focus on the mission, no matter what. The mission must be completed. The Bible teaches Christ Followers that we must carry out Jesus' Great Commission no matter what the political, social, cultural, or economic conditions. Historically, the church has always grown under the heat of persecution. What about us?  We were blessed in this country for many years without major persecution. However, I believe that could be changing. So, are we prepared?Luke gives us insight into how we should respond to the heat of persecution: Opening: "Polycarp, a man of advanced age, was arrested by the Roman authorities and brought to the arena for execution in front of the cheering crowd. The proconsul pressed him hard and said, 'Swear and I will release you. Revile Christ'. Polycarp replied, Eighty and six years have I served Him, and He never did me any wrong; and how can I now blaspheme my King that has saved me?'" (Cited in Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History, chapter 15.) God Gives Opportunity to All People to Know Christ By Faith v. 12-16Signs and wonders point people to the Person and Work of Jesus ChristMany people responded to God's miraclesSome were afraid to be identified with the churchThere Will Be Persecution Where Jesus Is Being Preached v. 17-40Pride and power of the high priests and Sadducees was being challengedThey were filled with jealousyThey arrested the Apostles and jailed themJail Christ Followers didn't stop God MissionThey stayed focused on Jesus Great Commission and were willing to trust God with the consequencesAn angel came and released them and encouraged them to continue Jesus' missionThe Apostles obeyed and went to the temple teaching the people about new life in ChristThe religious establishment turned up the heat even moreThey were arrested againFilling Jerusalem with the teaching of the gospel with details on sin, the cross, and resurrectionLook how Peter responded in v.29-32This is the key verse of this passageThe gospel was preached even while they were under arrestThis infuriated the religious and political establishmentSometimes persecutors sometimes say the truth v. 33Pharisee GamalielHe persuaded the religious leaders not to kill the ApostlesThey flogged the Apostles and ordered them to stop preaching and JesusThe Joy of Suffering for Jesus v. 41-42They Apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy by God to suffer disgrace for JesusThey were more empowered to carry out Jesus' missionClosing: How about us?

Today’s Issues and Problems Give You the Opportunity To Mirror Jesus in Your Actions, Even With a “Mask” and “Distancing” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Paul, in Titus 3:4-8, powerfully lays out that we, as Christians, receive our Salvation through our faith and God’s Grace and not by our works. However, we are, also, given the opportunity to mirror Jesus’s good works in our actions and works: “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.". What would happen, if the next time you are in the grocery store, you see a young family in need at the register and you pay their bill? Or what would happen if you paid the bill of a young family in line behind you at a fast food restaurant? Or what would happen if you got in your car and visited the shut-ins living in your community? Or what would happen if you went next door and actually met, got to know, and helped your neighbor? If we want to be real Christians, then we need to follow the “Great Commission” set forth by Jesus, for us, in Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”".  Our most powerful tool, that we can use to follow Jesus “Great Commission”, is for our life to let others see Jesus in our faith, actions, and works.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Fear. Rather, I will abide in the Lord’s Faithfulness. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): John 13:34-35; Romans 2:6-10; Titus 3:4-8; Psalms 27:1-14. MESSAGE SUMMARY: Most of us do not like to think about and/or plan for death, especially our own. However, Paul in, Romans 6:23, made your life and death position very clear: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.". As part of your preparations for your earthly death and eternity, you should take one time each year to evaluate and to reflect on your position for facing death and realizing your eternal life. You must identify those changes that you must make in your life and in your relationship with God. This preparation for your death will be a blessing for you and your family. Are you prepared to face our death? Will you have eternal life? What about those you leave behind – are you being a good steward?  Also, what about your family; are they prepared for their earthly death and to receive eternal life? In Matthew 28:18, Jesus gave us His Great Commission for your life focus: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.". Have you followed Jesus’ Great Commission, for your own family by making disciples of your family members to your family can face their death with the certainty, through Jesus, of Eternal Life? Sermons of Pastor Rob Myallis

June 28, 2020Many are familiar with Jesus’ Great Commission — to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This week we hear Jesus Small Commission (Matthew 10:42) — “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”  This passage reminds us that discipleship is not about grand and glorious things, but humble acts of service to the least of these.   Likewise, God’s love to us isn’t always about grand and glorious things, but daily acts of love and service toward us that give us new life.  Throughout the sermon, Pastor Rob weaves in reflections on the Great and Small of Baptism and life as a baptized Christian; not simply because this made sense theologically, but also because this Sunday we had the baptism of two elementary school boys.

Your preparation for your death will be a blessing for you and your family. Are you prepared to face your death? Will you have eternal life? What about those you leave behind – are you being a good steward of your life and your death?  Also, what about your family; are they prepared for their earthly death and to receive their eternal life? In Matthew 28:18, Jesus gave you His Great Commission for your life’s focus: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.". Have you followed Jesus’ Great Commission, for your own family, by making disciples of your family members?   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Resentment. Rather, I will abide in the Lord’s Compassion. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Romans 5:12-15; Romans 7:24-25; Matthew 28:18-20; Psalms 147:1-20. This class will focus on what a philosophy of ministry really is, why you need it and how you use it to effectively minister in the name of Christ.  We will introduce you to common language and understandings to help your team minister on the same page and in the same direction. The purpose of the RYM POM is rooted in Matthew 28 and Jesus’ Great Commission.  Ministry exists to “reach” youth for Christ and “equip” them for service of Christ.  People are “reached” when they encounter the living Christ in his Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit. People are “equipped” when they engage the living Christ among his people, through prayer, study of the Bible, the Sacraments, and fellowship of God’s people.  The POM also identifies four categories in which to define our goals. This class will unpack this material and explain/establish these important concepts.

So it is with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye that in this PODCAST we bid adieu to Jesus in HD. Lest you regret that we will now no longer hear all-things-Jesus-related, fear not, my friends. For as we now break the seal on the amazing book of Acts and our study of Peter in HD, which of course will then pivot to Paul in HD somewhere around ch 13, and as I will demonstrate in mere moments, the book of Acts is very much a book all about Jesus primarily; Peter, Paul and other apostles secondarily. In this podcast, our goal is to lay the foundation for this entire study. A study that will include: 1. Entire of book of Acts; the lives primarily of both Peter and then Paul, along with an entire array of some of the most interesting individuals you’d every want to meet; 2. The birth, growth, and establishment of what Jesus called in Matthew 16:18 His ekklesia — this when He declared for all the world to hear, “I will build my ekklesia, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” 3. The non-stop-yet-failed attempts of “all the powers of hell itself” to conquer it, destroy it, and in any way possible to frustrate its expansion to the whole world. 4. The way in which redemptive history unfolded in the immediate aftermath of Jesus’ death and resurrection. 5. The glorious heritage that is ours as the present-generation of Christ-followers, with a direct link all the way back to these amazing men and women of faith. Individuals who literally put their lives on the line in order to fulfill Jesus’ Great Commission that we detailed for you last week in our final Jesus in HD podcast. This is our heritage. You and I are standing on the shoulders of giants: the fathers and mothers of our faith. I can assure you that they would not have seen themselves as anything but frail, faltering, certainly faith-struggling individuals; never as giants. Yet, giants they were. People who lived literally day-to-day as they tried to navigate the shark-filled waters of their spiritually-hostile, Rome-dominated world. What an example they set for us; what a legacy they left for us as they humbly bore the name of Jesus before a watching, often unwelcoming world. We cannot know, nor appreciate, who we are as CCFs, nor what this is all about, nor where this is all going, unless and until we understand from where we’ve come. That is what this study will provide. Please remember that depending upon your web browser and connection speed, it may take up to 60 seconds for this podcast to begin to play. God bless you richly as you listen.
