Dan Bolen was interviewed by Chelsea Ennen out of Brooklyn, New York for the Kirkus Review. Kirkus is the number one in the world who rates authors and their books. Chelsea did an excellent interview with me and Kirkus was supportive and honest about my memoir “the Courage to Be Courageous”. So on this podcast, I read the interview word for word in hopes of inspiring others to read my memoir regarding overcoming fear and using courage to get through it. Kirkus reviewed it on their website digitally April 8 and I was featured in their March 1 and March 15 magazine publication that goes to bookstores and all libraries. I also wanted my listeners to know that I will be doing a live interview with a national syndicated TV program, “The Daily Blast”. I will be doing this podcast on April 18, 2024. Because “The Daily Blast is a national syndicated program I invite my listeners to listen to it locally. You all should have it on your local TV stations .Here we get it on NBC. it's my opportunity to have a national voice for our community and I am humbled and appreciative that “The Daily Blast “ have offered me this opportunity. On this podcast I also read a portion of Steve Petersons “Bursting Through knowledge and power” about an article he did regarding the Love of Hate . What is the love of hate? “The love of hate is best described as someone looking at someone and simultaneously seeing hate in their eyes and a smile on their lips”. Steve goes onto show the love of hate is gaining power and momentum. For example: He mentions in 2020 these groups took over $110, million and their revenue continues to grow. We all in our community and our heterosexual allies must have a voice about this. Do not remain silent. I encourage all of you to read this entire review ONLINE knowledge and power. Finishing up the look down the trail of some fantastic and powerful lessons from Coach Pat Summitt, shared through Coach AJ - part 4 of 4 is:  Be Courageous and Accept The Cost of Action - To face your fears, you need to accept your environment and have the courage to push through. Accept that there are different outcomes that may happen, but one result doesn't define you. Focus on the price of not taking action and think about what it would be like not to try. Understanding the cost of not trying empowers you to confront your fears, take calculated risks, and move closer to your goals.  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

Emphasizing the importance of inclusive feelings for children in blended families, Jenna shares her insights.  Jenna's work focuses on helping others find calm amidst the chaos of parenting. While being a parent is one of the greatest joys in life, it can also be overwhelming and exhausting. There is so much to keep up with that parents can often identify as chaos coordinators. From scheduling doctor appointments, play dates, extracurricular practices, preparing meals, cleaning the house, managing all of the big emotions from our little ones, and much more, it can feel like our lists never end. At times, the chaos can be all-consuming. However, if we want to create calm for ourselves and our families in the house, it all begins with us. Our guest today, Jenna Hermans, knows all about turning chaos into calm and is sharing her secrets with us! Who is Jenna Hermans? Jenna is living proof that you can create a life of calm within chaos and overwhelm. She uses her bachelor's degree in psychology, master's degree in organizational management, and over fifteen years of Human Resources experience to build strong teams, both at work and at home. Jenna co-founded Be Courageous, and she's a busy mom of 4, a coach, and an author. As seen in Forbes, The Sun, ELLE, Yahoo, and more, Jenna takes an intentional and inclusive approach to help people (especially parents) implement tools that put organization and systems around their busy lives that infuse calm and more joy, helping them go from 'Chaos to Calm,' which doubles as the title of her debut book that launched in May 2023. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, we chat with Jenna about creating more time, less stress, and understanding how we, as parents, can spend more hours appreciating our families and living our lives with intention and joy! Here are several of the questions that we covered: What actionable steps can parents take to begin to reduce the stress and chaos in their lives? Sometimes, the chaos feels so overwhelming that it's hard to know where to start. How do you recommend that overwhelmed parents take the first step to gaining control? I've heard you speak about "owning your calm." Can you elaborate on this idea? Which habits are most important to reduce the chaos of your daily life and increase your calm? How can communication and what communication tips can help busy parents create more calm? What role does community play in helping parents feel less overwhelmed? How can parents find their community when they may not have one already? I know you talk about self-care as an essential part of creating calm. How do you suggest parents start to care for themselves if this concept is foreign to them? Kyle Hermans is the CEO and co-founder of Be Courageous, a globally recognized business consultancy that helps ambitious leaders and brands grow and transform. They do this through improving company culture, strategy, innovation, technology, research, and ESG/SDG. Kyle has led transformation initiatives for hundreds of Fortune 1000 companies and startups throughout his distinguished career. He is a faculty member at Singularity University and a guest lecturer at several prestigious institutions such as Berkeley, USC, and UCLA. Kyle joins Barry O'Reilly to explore the concept of courage, the necessity of unlearning and relearning, and how these ideas have shaped his personal and professional life.A Long Way From HomeKyle's father bought him a one-way ticket from his native South Africa to the Netherlands, where he experienced a big culture shock. This was his first encounter with the idea of courage and unlearning. In the Netherlands, everything was different and he had to forget his old ideas about the world. He said, "Everything I ever thought about my reality [was] just gone.” After adjusting to his new life, Kyle got different jobs in business, including consulting and being an executive at design agencies. But he found out that his energetic personality and quick ambition didn't match the usual corporate way of working. This led to his decision to make his own way to fully reach his potential, which he calls his “Schiphol Moment”. This decision led him to his current job at Be Courageous. There, he explores courage, creativity, and transformative leadership in professional situations.Courage is CreativityKyle's connection to the notion of courage began while working at an innovation agency called Synectics, which heavily influenced the origins of design thinking. He used the quote, “Another word for creativity is courage” in hundreds of workshops around the world. This quote resonated with Kyle, encouraging him to seek out his 'Schiphol moments'—intentionally placing himself in unfamiliar environments to shock the system and trigger growth. “The pursuit of courage is staying humble,” he shares, “I'm not going to get too trapped by the things I've done or be too defined by where I've been.” Kyle believes that everyone harbors an unexpressed idea or dream within them, the pursuit of which demands a great deal of courage, particularly in hostile, difficult, and vulnerable conditions. Showing up to transformative experiences and attempting to effect change within successful organizations is an act of courage in itself, according to Barry, given the immense pressure to conform to pre-existing systems. “Creation is actual courageousness,” he remarks.Courage Is Not the Absence of FearKyle believes that courage is a quality that everyone can choose to have, not just a mental trait. He says, "Where there is fear, there is courage, and where there is courage, there is fear." He emphasizes that fear and courage are linked, and people often forget that courage can be found when facing fear and self-doubt. He asks, "What's the courage needed in this moment?" Recognizing the courage needed to beat fear is often the start of becoming brave. Kyle talks about being intentional, having a purpose, being curious and open, taking risks, and being selfless. He emphasizes that these qualities come out when people decide to confront their fears and tackle challenges directly. These traits enable people to take responsibility, direct their actions, and embrace the unknown. Most notably, he mentions, "The fastest way to bring courage into your world is to accept what is."Looking AheadKyle reminds listeners of the bridge between courage and unlearning. “We must unlearn that fear is the only way to design our lives,” and choose to see life through a lens of courage instead, he shares.ResourcesKyle Hermans on the Web | LinkedIn | Twitter

Fearless Presentation
How to Overcome Glossophobia (An Irrational Fear of Public Speaking) Part 2

Fearless Presentation

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2023 12:23

This is part two of a two-part series on Glossophobia -- the fear of public speaking. Last week, we talked about what this phobia is and what causes it. This week, I will give you a few of my best tips to overcome this fear -- even if you fall into the camp of having a full-blown phobia of public speaking. How to Overcome Glossophobia (An Irrational Fear of Public Speaking)1) Start Small. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. If your fear is intense, there is no need to schedule a high-level presentation in front of 1000 people right away. Instead, start by speaking up more in staff meetings, at church, or join a social organization. Set a goal for each interaction. For instance, if you never speak up in staff-meeting, just set a goal to share a single idea with the group. Then, over time, increase the goal. Next week, add two ideas, etc.2) Look for Opportunities to Present, and then Be Courageous. You will never conquer any fear if you simply avoid the situations that cause the fear. Instead, look for opportunities to speak where the consequence of failure is pretty low. For instance, you can offer to speak at career day at your child's school. (If you totally bomb this presentation, so what?) Then, be courageous. I talked in the article 7 Qualities of a Great Speaker about the difference between Self-Confidence and Poise. Self-confidence comes from having a series of successes doing something. Poise, however, is where a speaker is not confident but performs courageously anyway. The more of these courageous successes that you can string together, the more self-confident you will be.3) Document What You Did Well. The reason that our presentation skills classes work so well is that our instructors help each student document what they do well in each presentation. For instance, the instructor will teach the student a way to make part of his/her presentation easier, show the student how to do it, and then when the presenter succeeds, the instructor reinforces that success. You can do the same after each of your presentations as well. Immediately after presenting, make a list of some of the things that you did well in the speech. Turn off your internal critic for a while. (All of us are our own worst critic, so you will have to fight this.) Then, before your next presentation, refer to the items on your list. These lists will help you reduce the phobia and build confidence over time.4) Practice in a Controlled Environment. If you want a faster way to conquer glossophobia, join us in one of our fear of public speaking workshops. One of the great things about being in a controlled environment like a class or workshop is that the risk of failure is reduced to just about 0%. The only way to conquer glossophobia is to string together a series of successes that outweigh, in our minds, the causes that we talked about above. As each participant masters each part of a fantastic presentation, the fear is reduced exponentially. In fact, in many cases, the growth is so fast and so dramatic that the irrational fear is replaced by confidence. The process isn't foolproof, and it isn't easy. However, it works almost 100% of the time!Show Notes: How to Overcome Glossophobia (An Irrational Fear of Public Speaking)

On April 15, 2013, the Boston Marathon witnessed a horrific event, 5 people died and 264 people were seriously injured from the bombings.   Jennifer was one of them. In an instant, her whole world was shattered. Surviving a terrorist attack led her to ask the question: “What good can possibly come from this?”   On her 4 year journey of healing, she discovered she had to stare at herself in the mirror and forgive her own inner terrorist.   When she was asked to present as a witness to prosecute her attacker in court she experienced an overwhelming sense of peace when she stared her attacker in the eyes and forgave him.   Knowing she had to come full circle, Jennifer fearlessly ran the 2017 Boston Marathon. This time she finished it. The terrorist attack became the greatest gift of her life.   Jennifer is the producer of 2 Emmy award-winning films, an award-winning documentary, ‘A New Leash On Life', an Emmy nominated broadway show ‘Dream Big' with Rudy Ruettiger and is due to release the movie 'There's Got To Be More To Life - Transforming Through Trauma'.   She won the Rising Stars 40 Under 40 as an emerging leader in her community and Co-authored a book with Jack Canfield called ‘Mastering the Art of Success'!   Her new book ‘Shattered' shares her journey from frightened to freedom to help evolve human consciousness by reminding people that they can rise and thrive in life!   In this episode, Jennifer talks about what it felt like to live through the Boston Marathon strategy as a spectator and how she decided to run the Boston Marathon as part of her healing journey.
