Reegs selected the 1986 Disney sci-fi classic FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR for our viewing entertainment. Joey Cramer stars as David Freeman, a 12-year old boy who falls into a ravine in 1978 rendering himself briefly unconscious and presumably sustaining terrible brain injuries, explaining the events of the rest of the movie which involves time travel, an initially hostile sentient machine from the planet Phaelon named Max (Paul Reubens) and the villainous NASA agency headed up by Dr Faraday (Howard Hesseman, POLICE ACADEMY 2: THEIR FIRST ASSIGNMENT) who is desperate to get David alone with his staff for a few days. I'm being silly but this is by anyone's standard a strong first act, with a creepy Amblin style atmosphere and a barrage of childhood fears distilled into pure nightmare fuel; the idea that your home might not be a safe place, that your family can disappear or change in an instant, that you might be taken away by the government and subjected to experiments and that those experiments might reveal strange things about yourself. It's a shame that the final stretch of the movie sees Max devolving into a braying idiot, with all the charm of, and vaguely visually resembling, a sort of futuristic speculum. There were a few first time viewers as Dan sat down to watch this with his daughter and Sidey did the same with his as the pair of them enjoyed their inaugural viewing. Without the veneer of nostalgia and with this movie being almost 40 years old now, will any of the new viewers find something to enjoy?

In this very special episode, we chat with Lisa Downs, director and producer of Life After the Navigator. What do you get when you combine a life-destroying journey across space and time with the fun-filled tale of a wise-cracking kid and his wacky robot friend? The answer: Disney's "Flight of the Navigator" (1986), a strange but mostly loveable combination of eerie sci-fi film and "a boy and his dog" story (except that the dog's a robot).Fun is threaded throughout this film, starting with the opening scene of a dog frisbee-catching contest that keeps teasing the audience with faux spaceship sightings. (As Sarah quips, "We open the movie with the Fort Lauderdale championship for 'Who's a Good Boy?'") The movie also features middle-class families with boats and huge houses on the water, a spaceship that operates on Muppet logic, Chekov's fireworks, and a 12-year-old who -- according to Raf -- acts like a bitter Boomer.Unlike 1982's "E.T.," "Flight of the Navigator" did not terrify Sarah as a child, who watched it multiple times with family friends and still considers it to be Sarah Jessica Parker's greatest performance (after "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"). In a slightly emotional turn, she gets a little nostalgic at the end of the episode, thinking about the recent loss of her mother and remembering "the joy of going to a movie together with my family and seeing something that we all genuinely enjoyed." But sometimes, it's okay to be nostalgic and love a movie for its memories more than its content -- especially, as Sarah notes, when we're still "trying to read our own star charts to plot our own way home."
Lisa Downs' is a filmmaker with a unique take on how to look back on classic films. Her 2017 documentary, Life After Flash was a brilliant insight into the film Flash Gordon and its lead actor Sam J. Jones, while 2020's Life After The Navigator looked at another beloved '80s sci-fi film, Flight of the Navigator and the rollercoaster life of its young star Joey Cramer. Far from being mere nostalgic looks at classic films, her documentaries have a heartfelt core, which profile the stars of the movies and their complex lives. It's just just features - you can discover more on her Life After YouTube Web Show which features interviews, competitions and a lot more. On this show Lisa talks about three very different films which mean something special to her - the 1989 comedy Dream A Little Dream starring the two Coreys - Corey Haim and Coery Feldman, 2015 financial drama, The Big Short and the Hollywood classic, Giant starring James Dean.
We’re excited to leave high school in the past where it belongs and get back to our regularly scheduled C2R programming. Jeff is up this month with an 80s classic known for being one of the first examples of CGI on film, Flight of the Navigator. We also chat about Rolling Stone’s recent list of the 100 greatest sitcoms of all time, and we suffer through an unwanted country music lesson from a disgruntled C2R Super Fan Will.If you’re a fan of this movie, we highly recommend checking out Life After the Navigator, a documentary that looks at the life of child star, Joey Cramer, and his roller-coaster life since that breakthrough role. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1986 American science fiction adventure film "Flight of the Navigator" directed by Randal Kleiser. The film stars Joey Cramer as David Freeman, a 12-year-old boy from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who on the night of the Fourth of July, 1978, while walking through the woods near his house, falls down into a ravine and is knocked unconscious. After David wakes up, and he makes his way home, but to his shock and horror he discovers that his parents and his little brother no longer live in the house because eight years have passed and the year is now 1986 - even though to David he had only been gane for what seems like a couple of hours at the most. After being returned to his parents, David is approached by NASA after they make a connection between David and a crashed alien spacecraft that has been discovered, hoping that David maybe the key to finding out where the alien spacecraft came from and who is its pilot. David feels drawn to the spacecraft by a compelling voice in his mind, and eventually David finds his way inside the spacecraft - the same spacecraft that abducted him eight years before and who needs the vital navigational information within David's brain to return the other alien subjects that were abducted and taken back to the planet Phaelon for further study. However, NASA wishes to keep the alien spacecraft and David for further study for as long as possible - which leads David and the spacecraft's robotic commander, "Max", to make their escape from the NASA facility they are being held at so that David can help Max complete his mission, and also give David the opportunity to become "The Navigator" and potentially find a way to return himself to where and when he was abducted. The films also stars Veronica Cartwright as Helen Freeman, Cliff DeYoung as Bill Freeman, Sarah Jessica Parker as Carolyn McAdams, Jonathan Sanger as Dr. Carr, Matt Adler as Jeff Freeman, and Paul Reubens as the voice of Max. The music is by Alan Silvestri. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

I chat to Life After Movies Director and Producer, Lisa Downs. We chat about Life After Flash, starring Flash Gordon himself Sam Jones as well her Life After The Navigator documentary with Joey Cramer, that is currently available on Amazon Prime. We look back on what she has learnt about creating and filming a documentary, how this process has evolved and what she has planned for her new documentary currently in the works, Life After Atreyu, chronicling the journey of Atreyu actor Noah Hathaway and his journey from Atreyu to now. This is an excellent insight into the mind of a brilliant documentary maker, the trials and tribulations of the process, but the sweet feeling of success at the end.

In Episode 58 of The Film '89 Podcast, one of the Film '89 writing team, Steven Saunders, makes his long-overdue debut on the Podcast. Steven is a lifelong cinephile and host of his own podcast, The Film Connection, and for this very special episode, he was lucky enough to have the opportunity to interview actor Joey Cramer, star of the hit 1986 Disney sci-fi film, Flight of the Navigator. Joey is the subject of a new documentary from writer/director Lisa Downs, Life After the Navigator, that's both a loving retrospective of Flight of the Navigator but also a biography of Joey's life. A tale of absent fathers, substance addiction leading to criminality, and eventually incarceration, it's also a tale of hope and redemption. Joey gives a fascinating and frank interview, discussing both his experience working on Flight of the Navigator and his remarkable life afterwards.

The Crazy Folks review Flight Of The Navigator (1986), starring Joey Cramer, Paul Reubens, Veronica Cartwright, Cliff DeYoung and Sarah Jessica Parker. Directed by Randal Kleiser. Boy goes out and plays. Boy gets knocked unconscious and wakes up 8 years later. Boy is taken to NASA where they discover all kinds of crazy stuff in his brain that was put there by a UFO. Boy escapes from NASA with UFO and shenanigans ensue. We will also touch on the un-Godly production budget of Avengers: Endgame and why it ISN'T the highest-grossing movie of all-time nor the most profitable. We also do a rant on spoiled moviegoers unfairly comparing special effects of movies from 30-40 years ago to modern day CGI extravaganzas.
