Alec, JJ and Mattson's discussion centers upon Stanley Kubrick's seminal 1987 film, "Full Metal Jacket," wherein we conduct an exhaustive analysis of its dual narrative structure, comprising the harrowing boot camp experience juxtaposed against the chaos of the Vietnam War. We dissect the profound impact of R. Lee Ermey's portrayal of the drill sergeant, which many believe singularly elevates the film's initial act to an unparalleled level of cinematic excellence, yet we lament the subsequent decline in narrative cohesion and engagement in the latter half. The variance in pacing and thematic exploration between the two segments prompts us to contemplate Kubrick's artistic choices and the efficacy of his directorial vision. Throughout our discourse, we reflect upon the film's commentary on the dehumanization of soldiers and the moral complexities intertwined with the experience of war. Ultimately, we arrive at a consensus that while the film remains undeniably significant, its bifurcated nature invites a myriad of critiques regarding its overall effectiveness and lasting legacy.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

Val Kilmer was one of the most eclectic and enthralling actors of his generation and one of the movies that heavily showcased this is this week's movie, “The Salton Sea.” Kilmer showed he could be wacky, like in “Top Secret!” and “Real Genius” or deadly serious like in “Spartan” and “The Doors.” In “The Salton Sea” he sort of combines those two and it makes for an entertaining and captivating performance. If you want a movie that leads you down one path, en route to setting an expectation, just to subvert it, and does it multiple times, “The Salton Sea” just might be for you. Kilmer plays Danny Parker, a trumpet player, who has a faithful marriage to a beautiful wife until that all comes to an end. Afterwards, his life becomes a drug-filled downward spiral as he joins the perpetual night party of the tweaker to cope, or is that why he's really doing it? We don't know. He's also a confidential informant for a couple of L.A. detectives who want him to set up a maniacally, murderous drug dealer named Pooh Bear. This is a drug dealer known for killing people suddenly just because he doesn't like the tone of their voice. Also, Danny is told that he's been marked for death for something he didn't do, so things went from beautiful and romantic to pitiful and manic really quick. Is Danny Parker for real, or is he someone else? Will he survive the vortex of violence he finds himself in? Is it worth finding out in this lesser known Val Kilmer movie? Check out my spoiler-free review on this episode to find out! “The Salton Sea” also stars Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Goldberg, Luiz Guzman, Doug Hutchison, Anthony LaPaglia, Glenn Plummer, Peter Sarsgaard, Deborah Kara Unger, Chandra West, BD Wong, R. Lee Ermey, Shalom Harlow, Sherry Knight, Meat Loaf, Azura Skye, Josh Todd and Danny Trejo. In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of this classic from director David Fincher, it's IMAX showing & its release on 4K, I'm doing a retro review of “Se7en.' Brad Pitt plays Detective David Mills, who moves to a crime-ridden city with his wife, and is paired up with retiring detective William Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman. Thanks to a serial killer that appears to be preaching and forcing attrition on his victims concerning the Seven Deadly Sins, there will be no easing into the job for Detective Mills. Everything in this city is grimy, nasty and dark and so is what this killer is doing to teach seven peopkle a “lesson.” It'll take Somerset's temperance, wisdom and patience, along with Mills' drive, energy and passion to bring this killer down, if the killer doesn't take them, or a loved one, out first. This is the first of three films that Brad Pitt and David Fincher made together and it also made Fincher a top tier director. “Se7en” also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey, Richard Roundtree, Reg E. Cathey, Peter Crombie, Hawthorne James, Richard Schiff and Kevin Spacey. Fueled by the Fallen founder Kevyn Major Howard never served in the military. He has 31 film and television acting credits and is perhaps most recognized for his role as combat photographer “Rafterman” in the iconic Stanley Kubrick Vietnam war film “Full Metal Jacket”. We spend some time discussing the films production and the experience of working with greats like Kubrick and R. Lee Ermey. Because of his role in Full Metal Jacket, Kevyn was invited to visit the Twenty Nine Palms Marine Base. During a tour of the base, he was drawn to a memorial for Lance Corporal Torrey L. Gray. Gray threw himself on a grenade to save his fellow Marines. When Kevyn returned home, he felt compelled to do something to assure that he and other Americans never forget those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. He decided to adorn his 1963 Chevy Nova race car with the rank and name of every Marine killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. He then produced additional cars for all the other branches as well. He specifically chose the canvas of automobiles because “With a race car you can attract the attention of a two year old on up to a ninety two year old.” Kevyn was then moved to create five Camaro “Angel Cars” to memorialize all the victims of the 9/11 attacks. The Angel Cars have done three cross country awareness tours and even been placed at the feet of the Statue of Liberty. In addition to raising awareness all across the country, his Fueled by the Fallen Foundation also grants scholarships to children of the fallen. Kevyn is known as the “King of the Hollywood Head Shot” and specializes in producing head shots for aspiring actors when he is not acting himself. He is currently working on producing a television series that will honor various military heroes and tell their stories TAKEAWAY: “My family does not take lightly what the cost of freedom is.”

A firefighter specializing in blowing out fires, goes up against a greedy oil corporation he often works with, to prevent them from launching their new oil refinery and taking land from the Alaskan natives. On Deadly Ground is Steven Seagal's directorial debut and features strong performances from Michael Caine, John C. McGinley, and R. Lee Ermey and is nothing short of action-packed. There's nothing better than watching Steven Seagal taking down an entire oil corporation almost single-handedly. This movie is so crazy, it has a lengthy out-of-place environmentalist PSA on oil at the end which was a thinker, but this is why we love Steven Seagal movies so much. The production of "Full Metal Jacket" (1987), directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, was a painstakingly detailed and immersive experience that exemplified the director's penchant for perfectionism. Kubrick's approach to creating the gritty world of the Vietnam War was nothing short of meticulous. One of the standout aspects of the production was the casting and training of the actors. Kubrick sought out actors who could fully embody their roles, and this included intense auditions and physical transformations. Vincent D'Onofrio, who portrayed the troubled Private Pyle, famously gained a significant amount of weight for his character, while the entire cast underwent boot camp-style military training to convincingly portray soldiers. This immersive preparation allowed the actors to inhabit their roles with an authenticity that shines through in the film. Another hallmark of the production was Kubrick's dedication to creating authentic settings. The film was shot in real-world locations, including England and London's former Beckton Gas Works, which were transformed into war-torn Vietnamese landscapes. The attention to detail was remarkable, from the realistic military equipment and uniforms to the hand-painted "Born to Kill" helmet worn by Private Joker, played by Matthew Modine. Kubrick's insistence on practical effects and his willingness to take the time necessary to achieve his vision contributed to the film's raw and uncompromising portrayal of the Vietnam War. The result was a cinematic masterpiece that continues to be celebrated for its realism and artistry. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: "Full Metal Jacket" (1987), directed by Stanley Kubrick, offers a gripping and unflinching portrayal of the Vietnam War through a two-part narrative. The first part unfolds in a U.S. Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. Here, the audience is introduced to a group of young recruits undergoing brutal training under the iron fist of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey). The recruits, including the cynical and quick-witted Private Joker (Matthew Modine) and the struggling and mentally unstable Private Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio), endure physical and psychological torment as they are molded into efficient killing machines. This part of the film delves deep into the dehumanizing effects of military training, emphasizing the loss of individuality and the emergence of a collective soldier identity. The second part of the film takes place in the heart of the Vietnam War itself. Joker, now a war correspondent, and his fellow Marines are thrust into the brutal and chaotic urban warfare of the Tet Offensive. They navigate the horrors of battle, facing a relentless enemy and witnessing the profound psychological toll the war takes on both their comrades and themselves. Joker's journey culminates in a chilling confrontation with a deadly sniper, a moment that forces him to confront the moral complexities of war and the duality of human nature. "Full Metal Jacket" is a searing exploration of the dehumanization and psychological trauma inflicted by war, as well as an examination of the blurred lines between humanity and inhumanity in the crucible of combat. Kubrick's meticulous direction and the outstanding performances of the cast make it a haunting and enduring portrayal of the Vietnam War experience. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

This movie is loosely based on the life of Henri Young, played by Bacon, who tried to escape Alcatraz and was thrown in the hole for over 3 years. He then ends up killing the inmate that ratted out their escape attempt and is put on trial. Slater plays Young's defense attorney who is unluckily assigned the case by the public defender. Oldman plays the sadistic assistant warden of Alcatraz who enjoys torturing Young. The movie goes over the trial and the subsequent verdict. If you haven't seen the movie, check out this review to see if it's worth changing that reality. If you've seen it, watch to find out what someone else thinks of it. Murder in the First also stars Embeth Davidtz, William H. Macy, R. Lee Ermey, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brad Dourif, Mia Kirshner, Ben Slack, Stefan Gierasch, Kyra Sedgwick. On the fifth episode of this podcast's summer sidebar series on NBC's crime drama Miami Vice, the writer and podcaster Jeb Lund joins me from Tampa, Florida for a look at the two-season story arc that pitted Bob Balaban against G. Gordon Liddy. Balaban's Ira Stone, an Army reporter who served with Sonny Crockett in Vietnam, shows up in Miami 10 years later tracking down his sworn enemy, the mysterious drug trafficker turned private militia financier “Captain Real Estate”, played by the Watergate burglar and convicted felon in his acting debut. Jeb wanted us to add a Season 4 episode to our agenda, The Rising Sun of Death, a sleazy one where Vice goes up against the Yakuza with the help of a Japanese PI who is after the murderous head of the Sumiroshi-gumi clan. This episode also features R. Lee Ermey as a dirty cop and a strip club that plays The Smiths. These three episodes offer sharp critiques from the left of the treatment of Vietnam Veterans and US military involvement in drug trafficking in Southeast Asia, America's intervention in Central America and willingness to work with fascists in the global fight against communism, and the political interference that renders law enforcement pointless. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends, we're concluding our look into the paranoid, dystopian lens of 70's sci-fi by discussing three of the four versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We're talking the 1956 version directed by Don Siegel and starring Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, King Donovan, Carolyn Jones, Larry Gates and Sam Peckinpah in a cameo, comparing it to the 1978 version starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright, and Leonard Nimoy along with both Don Siegel and Kevin McCarthy in cameos, as well as the 1993 version called Body Snatchers directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Gabrielle Anwar, Terry Kinney, Meg Tilley, Christine Elise, Billy Wirth, R. Lee Ermey and Forest Whitaker. My guests this week are series regulars Roseanne Caputi, David Johnson and George Young, and of course, the inimitable Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we harvest the crop of pod people, the synopses: All three films center around the idea that an alien species has invaded our planet and has replaced members of our community with look-alikes sprung from plant-like pods. The key difference in the pod people is that their personalities are devoid of emotion. Which Body Snatchers film wins the war? Find out!

What better way to celebrate our seventh year of podcast excellence than to discuss David Fincher's feel-good hit of 1995, SE7EN!! I can't think of one, and it's not for a lack of trying. Along the way, we explore the film's ties to grime-core classics like SAW, consider stacking hot babies, debate if John Doe will get his security deposit money back, weigh just how bad of a cop Mills is, and wax rhapsodic at just how good David Fincher really is at making movies!! All this, plus we play a filthy and difficult edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and we yearn for the days when R. Lee Ermey would just yell at us for 45 minutes straight!! If there's an eighth deadly sin, it's missing this special anniversary... special. I've been writing these for nearly three-quarters of a decade now; they can't all be gold. On this episode of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO VIC DIAZ? we're heading into the jungle with Filipino thespian Vic Diaz in the 1978 Vietnam war drama THE BOYS IN COMPANY C, starring Stan Shaw, Andrew Stevens, and Craig Wasson. Similar in structure to Full Metal Jacker (and featuring R. Lee Ermey in a very similar role), it's a sometimes odd, sometimes hard-hitting look at a controversial war that also includes a whole lot of soccer for some reason. It's pretty good, and very different than the usual fair we cover on this podcast. CHECK IT OUT!
To round out your Halloween season, we bring you our take on "The Frighteners" - Peter Jackson's 1996 horror/thriller/comedy. Featuring a star-studded cast of Michael J. Fox, Trini Alvarado, Peter Dobson, John Astin, Dee Wallace Stone, Jeffrey Combs, R. Lee Ermey and Jake Busey, The Frighteners tells of psychic/local con artist Frank Bannister (Fox) who can see and speak with the dead and uses his abilities to set up hoax hauntings and exorcisms. But when a series of mysterious murders occur, Bannister must stop the responsible evil entity before its too late. The film that made Peter Jackson more of a household name had quite a lot of buzz behind it when it premiered in 1996, but how does it hold up in 2022? Check out our review of The Frighteners to find out! Only on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

This episode goes deep into a comment that Chris Carter made some time ago about how an episode about stigmata "deals with faith, not religion with a capital 'R' or Catholicism with a capital 'C'". Mostly about how absurd that is. Especially as this episode became a minor storyline milestone in the exploration of Scully's faith as a Roman Catholic. Still, if you're interested in R. Lee Ermey, like David is. Or stigmata and lightly researched details on the Catholic church, like me, this is a fun episode. Oh, we discuss boiling cow urine for a ridiculous amount of time. Apparently, they did that in The 13th Warrior? A movie Daive swears by. I realized upon relistening I didn't give the author of the stigmata paper I referenced. Looking back, I still can't find the name, but here's the resource if you want to check it out: Blood, Gender and Power in Christiantity and Judaism. Turns out, it's not a thesis paper either. Just a project, based on the URL. I wonder what kind of grade they received. Also, in the episode I didn't reference Judaism, so I went back and Ctrl + F "Judaism" on the project. 0/0 results. Interesting title. So, I researched "non-Christian stigmatics" and the Stigmata wikipedia page. Nothing on Judaism. Now I'm really curious about that title. I wish there was contact information connected to the project... The rest of the episode explores sainthood, references: How to Become a Saint, and how Michael Berryman is a phenomenal actor who shouldn't have been typecast. So, join us. And let me know what if you wrote that project. I'm super curious.
After getting into trouble as a teenager, and with no intentions of joining the military, Dennis DeMille says, he opened up his “soup cooler” to the judge about joining the military and the judge liked the idea. That moment in front of the judge would lead Dennis on a 20 year path of service as a U.S. Marine along with two high power rifle championships, the creation of the popular 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge, GM roles with Creedmore Sports and Tactical Walls, and a close friendship with the late Lee Ermey. Listen & share.
This week we have a look at the 1996 film The Frighteners. This is Episode #375!The Frighteners is a 1996 supernatural comedy horror film directed by Peter Jackson and co-written with Fran Walsh. The film stars Michael J. Fox, Trini Alvarado, Peter Dobson, John Astin, Dee Wallace Stone, Jeffrey Combs, R. Lee Ermey and Jake Busey. The Vietnam war epic Full Metal Jacket was released in 1987, directed by Stanley Kubrick, starring Mathew Modine as Private Joker Vincent D'Onofrio as Private Leonard, and Lee Ermey as Sergent Hartman. The plot revolves around Marnie recruits training on Parris Island for eight weeks during the Vietnam War. Sergeant Hartman is played by Lee Ermey, who portrays their foul-mouthed, harsh, and ruthless drill instructor. Host Collin Sugg while in drill instructor mode, which involves screaming, quotes a few of Sergent Hartmans best insults, including, "I am Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, your senior drill instructor. From now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words... will be 'Sir'. Do you... understand that?" And "If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day... you are the lowest form of life on Earth." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/collin-sugg/message
When it comes to the greatest Vietnam war movie of all time, two films come to mind: Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" and Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket." Longtime listener Hot Sauce Steve was kind enough to commission the latter. Everyone remembers the belly laughs and jaw-dropping surprises in "Full Metal Jacket," R. Lee Ermey's unforgettable performance, Vincent D'Onofrio's body transformation, and the wealth of dark humor. But we don't always take the time to celebrate the film's sets or dig deeper into Kubrick's themes of dehumanization, indoctrination, and whether man can withstand the unnatural conditions of war. In this episode, the Shat Crew hears Big D's Sapper School Tales, explores sex-worker inflation, outlines the economics of short-time versus long-time, debates slow-motion deaths, and plans Ash's Chaturbate career.
