Dan has talked to John Faye on the show before (twice, actually), but this time they're doing it live. On December 4th, 2024, John held a vinyl listening party for his new LP, 'The Long Game', at 48 Record Bar in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia. He asked Dan to come interview him live on stage in front of an audience, they recorded it, and decided it was cool enough to share with the world. Big thanks to all the staff at 48 Record Bar for making a wonderful evening, everyone who came and shared the night with us, and special thanks to producer and Philadelphia music OG Phil Nicolo (Studio 4, The Butcher Brothers) for sitting front and center and engaging in just a bit of good natured heckling. Also included in this episode is an excerpt from John's autobiography,' The Yin And Yang Of It All', available wherever you get books. 'The Long Game' is out now wherever you get your digital music, and available on vinyl via In The Pocket Productions on John's website.
Dan first talked to Katie Feeney, aka Roberta Faceplant, back in April of 2020 as one of his first virtual guests at the start of the pandemic. It was a different time then. Katie came over to the studio in person this time, and the gab starts right off the bat (Dan and Katie are both self-admitted gabbers). Katie talks about the birth of the Roberta Faceplant project and persona, the forming of the current lineup, which features her former You Do You bandmates Drew Parker and Aaron Boczkowski, as well as Nick Anastasi (Honey Butter, Southwork, Fat City Reprise) and Mykk Hoffman (The Funky T, Emily Drinker). The band's newest EP, 'Yee Haw Stuff', is out July 26th wherever you get digitial music. A quick primer on names and places (lotta names come up in this one): John Faye- former frontman of The Caulfields, Ike, John and Brittany, singer-songwriter, author, and elder statesman of the Philadelphia music community Dave Kiss- Philadelphia promoter going way back, owner of Dave Kiss Presents Ang Bocca- powerhouse Philadelphia singer and songwriter Kara Koser- also powerhouse Philadelphia singer and songwriter, frontwoman of Koser Crystal Engel- co-owner of Moon Rose Vintage, founder of Mamamoon Vintage Brittany Ann Tranbaugh- Philadelphia singer songwriter, touring artist, community leader Todd Mecaughey- engineer and producer at Cambridge Sound Studios, member of Secret American, formerly of the New Connection MilkBoy South Street (formerly Lickety Split)- two-floor venue on South Street in Philadelphia, home of Katie's open mic Episode image photo by Shannon Nicole
Dan goes in deep with Judah Kim as he talks about growing up "lucky number 7" of 8 siblings, the influence of his older brothers' garage bands, the lack of any Asian American role models in alt rock, studying voice and production at Berkley, sobriety and gratitude, and the burnout that comes with always having to make "content". With a journey that's taken him from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and back again, Judah and Dan discuss the pitfalls of being an independent musician, Judah's interest in mental health as it applies to Koreans, and the weight of insurmountable expectation and ambition that can come from growing up as a Korean American. Judah is part of Asian American Pie, a concert at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia on Friday, May 11th, featuring a lineup of Asian American/Pacific Islanders bands and artists, including Moonroof, Beau Freres, Alyssa Garcia, and longtime friend of the podcast, John Faye.
Singer/songwriter and alt-rock frontman John Faye's “The Yin and the Yang of It All: Rock'n'Roll Memories from the Cusp,” takes us for a ride into the belly of a dream. In the new memoir, Faye beautifully renders his healing journey from an alienated and grief-stricken teen and major label frontman to a fiftysomething father, mentor and champion of the middle-class musician.
This week, the PIC are trying something new...VIDEO! So we don't have a guest, but we do have two triumphs to celebrate! Back in early 2018, Dan talked with John Faye, and briefly touched on a book he was starting to work on. Five years later, the book is done, and John is back to talk about 'The Yin And Yang Of It All', his memoir of growing up in Delaware, his stint on A&M Records with his band The Caulfields, the powerful influence of his mother and sisters, maintaining a music career for multiple decades, and plenty of great stories from his years of playing and touring. They even touch on John's podcast, "Talking At the Diner", where John talks to members of what he likes to call "the musical middle class". 'The Yin And Yang Of It All' is out now, and available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and John's website.
“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential 90s musicians and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in the book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. Squeeze is one of the most enduring bands of the 80s with timeless songs like “Black Coffee in Bed,” “Tempted,” “Cool for Cats,” “Up The Junction,” and so many others – all that still sound fresh today. In a little bit of a departure from other episodes, this one is structed more like an oral history of the band with Squeeze's singer-songwriter-guitarist Chris Difford, drummer Gilson Lavis, and bassist John Bentley. Plus John Faye from the 90s band The Caulfields. Musical credits: Calmion: Calmion by Blue Dot Sessions Theme song from Audiojungle. The term "power pop" was coined by the Who's Pete Townshend in 1967 to describe their style of music. However, the term became more widely identified with subsequent artists from the 1970s who sought to revive Beatles-style pop. AllMusic describes the style as "a cross between the crunching hard rock of the Who and the sweet melodicism of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, with the ringing guitars of the Byrds thrown in for good measure". The sound of the genre became more established thanks to early 1970s hits by Badfinger, the Raspberries, and Todd Rundgren. Subsequent artists occasionally drew from developments such as new wave, punk, glam rock, pub rock, college rock, and neo-psychedelia. On today's show we are very excited to explore the power pop genre with you from its beginnings in the 60's up to artists today like Green Day, Weezer, and of course our Special guest John Faye! So sit back and hang with us for a bit as we discuss our favorite Power Pop Anthems!Spotify Playlist: Power Pop Anthemswww.rightfiction.comSpecial Guest: John FayeAs a musician of Korean-Irish descent, Faye was one of the only mixed-race Asian Americans to sign a major label recording contract in the 90's heyday of alternative rock. As the lead singer and songwriter for the Caulfields, he released two albums on A&M Records, had a modern rock radio hit in the US and Australia (“Devil's Diary”), had song placements in major films and television shows through a publishing deal with Warner-Chappell, and toured nationally and internationally. At the end of 2017, with over three decades in the music business under his belt, Philly rock veteran John Faye decided to take a new direction in his creative life and went on a self-imposed hiatus from recording and performing to look back on his life and career in his upcoming memoir, tentatively titled The Yin and the Yang of it All: Memories from the Cusp, as told by a Mixed-Up, Mixed-Race Kid. In his memoir, Faye shares his unusual perspectives on identity, race, and fame, and also recounts brushes with the likes of KKK grand wizard David Duke, TV-host Tom Bergeron, Apollonia (from Purple Rain), and numerous well-known rock bands from the 90's. Ultimately, it is the story of finding his voice and his tribe in the world of rock and roll, with his strong and enigmatic mother as his emotional anchor. With eleven full-length studio albums, two live albums, a B-sides record, three EP's, a DVD, and a handful of digital singles to his credit, John Faye has amassed an impressive musical resume.John Faye's Links:https://johnfaye.com/homeJohn's Patreon Page

John Faye has been in the music business, in many ways, for over three decades. His impressive musical resume dates back to his major label days fronting '90s alt-rockers The Caulfields (whose single "Devil's Diary" cracked the modern rock top-40, and whose album tracks landed on soundtracks for Disney's "The Babysitter's Club" and "Melrose Place"), to his first solo foray The John Faye Power Trip, which morphed into IKE (who put out 6 full-length records from 2003-2011), to his punk/garage-rock influenced duo John & Brittany (who gained notoriety on the Sirius/XM channel "Little Steven's Underground Garage"), to John Faye & Those Meddling Kids!, and now once again with the reunited Caulfields. John's upcoming memoir, tentatively titled Days That Came And Went, is scheduled to be published sometime in 2021. http://www.johnfaye.com/ Brett Talley's outstanding musical career includes his two years as lead guitarist and producer for the Philly based pop-rock act, OutSet, lead guitarist for one of Philadelphia's most popular rock outfits, IKE, The Caulfields, and now as a solo artist. Brett also performs as lead guitarist and secondary vocalist in the Philadelphia cover band Bangarang. Brett's most recent solo effort, Perpetual States, is a personal statement of loss and discovery. “I view it as a loose concept album with themes being the overarching stories of birth, death, and rebirth", he says. http://thatmusicmag.com/perpetual-states-a-walk-with-brett-talley/
Singer-songwriter John Faye of the Caulfields and Ike talks about his upcoming memoir, how a personal experience with his infant son led to a Philadelphia musical anthem, and the reunited Caulfields' feel-good cover of "Love Will Keep Us Together."
Songwriter, recording artist, author, professor and all-around decent human being John Faye joins me on the podcast.
