Loree Jones, Chief Executive Director of Philabundance discussed hunger in the Delaware Valley.  The area's largest food pantry supplier, they are seeing hunger rising, today 17% of our children and one in ten people are food insecure.   Philabundance collects food, through donations, restaurants and groceries, produce suppliers and others to distribute to over 600 area pantries.  Their operating mission is to provide nutritious food to all, culturally responsive to the communities, equitably sourced from businesses that are diverse and that reflect their values, and accessible through local organizations within the community.  Loree points out that it's all for nothing if its food that people don't want or they can't get to.    She discussed the hunger calendar, lots of food comes in during the holidays, but hunger is year-round and many children are going without meals when school is not in session.  She talked about their latest initiative, ‘Let's Eat' that delivered meal boxes to their homes.     Recognizing that hunger is a vicious circle, Philabundance not only works to alleviate hunger today, but also toward ‘Ending Hunger. For Good' with partnerships that can offer services to help break the cycle of poverty and end hunger for good.  Financial literacy, health services, Housing and job training programming helps families become self-sufficient.  Philabundance itself has a kitchen program that teaches knife skills and job skills, its graduates leave with their Safe Serve certification and a 80+% job placement.  Students operate a Philabundance catering facility, it's available for both hosting onsite and to cater outside events.   While hiring catering is an easy way to get involved, she hopes we will also donate and volunteer.  Individuals and businesses can host food drives or raise cash through ‘virtual' food drives.  She points out that with their buying power a cash donation goes much further.  Volunteers are also needed to sort, box food and transport collected food.   We talked about the annual Camp Out for Hunger, the nation's largest single location food drive, November 7th through the 11th at Xfinity Live at the Sports Complex.  Free parking and events every day are offered, including a carnival mid-way, live entertainment, a Wednesday night food truck and fireworks party, celebrity guests and stunts hosted by Beasley Media Group WMMR.   The event kicks off Sunday, November 6th with a ‘Fill a Trunk' car show, local car clubs and collectors will bring donations to the site for a rally.  Businesses and individual are encouraged to donate through Camp Out, onsite or online.  For more information about Philabundance go to philabundance.org

What happens when your business is inadvertently thrust into the national spotlight? That’s what happened when Philadelphia landscaping company Four Seasons Total Landscaping, a family-owned, woman-owned business, somehow became the location for a presidential campaign press conference. The Four Seasons Total Landscaping team has been handling this newfound fame beautifully, with a sense of humor and the bonus of adding merchandise to their offerings. The situation has even inspired a virtual charity run, which to date, has raised $19,000 for the Philabundance food bank. This whole situation is a textbook case of taking unexpected attention and running with it in a positive direction. It’s a good reminder for us as PR pros to make the best of unforeseen moments when circumstances allow.Have you handled a similar situation? Tell us about it at soloprpro.com.

David April, Founder of Fishtown Beer Runners Our guest on this episode was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015.  At that point, his life changed forever professionally. He's worked as a tour program coordinator for the state of New Jersey since 2002. There he has directed the development and management of the New Jersey state house tour program.  Including interpretive programs, civic education initiatives, and visitor services, but that's not why he's here on our show. He's joining us because of the innovative approach. He took to one of his great passions running in 2007, facing a divorce. He founded the Fishtown Beer Runners, a citywide running club that raises awareness and funds for various charities. Fishtown Beer Runners has raised thousands of dollars annually for national and local charities, including the American Cancer Society, the National Kidney Foundation, Philabundance, and Back On My Feet.  Fishtown Beer Runners has also developed partnerships and events with over 200 businesses, nonprofits and civic organizations. Their membership has increased from two runners at the beginning, all the way up to 4,000 runners through direct solicitation, traditional marketing and social media marketing.  Fishtown Beer Runners has initiated 20 national chapters as well as 50 international chapters and has been designated best running club by Philadelphia Magazine. He has also been nominated a Philadelphia health hero by Be Well Philly. Here are the Self Made Strategies of David April. Evan Ehlers, Founder and Executive Director of Sharing Excess returns to Ben Around Philly to talk about the organization’s efforts to bring food to those who need it. This student run organization partners with restaurants, grocery stores and other organizations to save excess food from being thrown away. The food is saved from becoming waste, and then transported to where it's needed most. They do this by hosting ‘Food Fests” to hand out food on the street. They also help by transporting food to other local organizations like Philabundance and Sunday Love Project. These organizations then help distribute the food to the public. Sharing Excess has recently partnered with Lavazza Professional who plans to gift luxury coffee brewers to businesses in the Philadelphia area. These brewers are offered to local businesses with no strings attached. If your business would benefit from a free brewer from Lavazza Professional, simply fill out this form. A year’s supply of coffee is included! Find more information about Sharing Excess, including volunteer and donation opportunities at Sharingexcess.com. If all of this sounds familiar, it could be because of an earlier BEN Around Philly episode. Food insecurity is a big problem in the US during normal times. Several months into the coronavirus pandemic, it's reached a level that is pretty hard to fathom. Tens of millions of people have lost their jobs, the future is unsure, and all of this has made the work of hunger relief organizations like Philabundance even more critical than usual. We wanted to know how Philabundance is dealing with an unprecedented crisis like this pandemic, so we asked Sara Hertz, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Philabundance to join the podcast to talk about what the last few months have been like, how bad the problem of food insecurity is right now, and the options people have if they need help, or if they want to help.
