Send us a textEver wondered if those unexpected meetings and unplanned encounters in your life are truly random, or if they hold a deeper significance? Join me on this episode of the World Cafe Live show as we sip on our favorite brew and unravel the mysteries of life's randomness. I'll share a personal story from my book, "A Cocktail of Words," about a serendipitous string of encounters on campus that blossomed into a lifelong friendship. It's a tale that blurs the lines between fate and coincidence, making us question whether these moments are gentle nudges from the universe urging us towards something greater. As I read an excerpt from my book, we'll explore the idea that perhaps life's randomness is simply a human construct—a way to explain the inexplicable. Through storytelling and introspection, I'll challenge you to reflect on the significance of paths crossing in your own life. These encounters might be more than just flukes; they could be pivotal moments that hold profound meaning. So grab your coffee, get comfortable, and let's journey together through the fascinating concept of chance and destiny.Support the showYou can support this show via the link below;https://www.buzzsprout.com/1718587/supporters/new

“I'm a jazz musician first, I feel,” says Bilal. Maybe this comes as news to the many admirers who know him as an ethereal singer with a shape-shifting R&B profile, or as one of the original catalysts for neo-soul. On a compelling new album, Adjust Brightness — his first studio release in almost a decade — Bilal explores a galactic sweep of sound, making genre distinctions feel all the more irrelevant to any conversation. But we had plenty to talk about during a spirited interview backstage at World Cafe Live, before Bilal's homecoming album-release show. “I grew up with my heroes being Miles Davis, or Jimi Hendrix, or Sun Ra,” he attests, aligning himself with a legacy of Afrofuturist improvisers. We put him there too, and this episode explains why.Support WRTI: https://bit.ly/2yAkaJsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dan goes in deep with Judah Kim as he talks about growing up "lucky number 7" of 8 siblings, the influence of his older brothers' garage bands, the lack of any Asian American role models in alt rock, studying voice and production at Berkley, sobriety and gratitude, and the burnout that comes with always having to make "content". With a journey that's taken him from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and back again, Judah and Dan discuss the pitfalls of being an independent musician, Judah's interest in mental health as it applies to Koreans, and the weight of insurmountable expectation and ambition that can come from growing up as a Korean American. Judah is part of Asian American Pie, a concert at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia on Friday, May 11th, featuring a lineup of Asian American/Pacific Islanders bands and artists, including Moonroof, Beau Freres, Alyssa Garcia, and longtime friend of the podcast, John Faye.
Tune in this week as we spend time with Judah Kim - a Philly-based "underdog" DIY alt-rocker who's songs have soaring vocals, and structure that put your ears at ease. David puts forth a "Beatles/Radiohead" vibe, and that sounds just about perfect.Judah was born in Philly, the 7th of 8 from parents to immigrated from South Korea. A proud Asian American, Judah is passionate to share that a path in rock n roll is there and to raise awareness on the mental health impact of a culture with a excessively strong emphasis on academics and success. So he and 4 other Asian American fronted bands came together to produce Asian American Pie and will be all performing on Sat May 11th at World Cafe Live in Philly.Check out his blog article "Why an All Asian Rock Show is Important"We'll also spend time discussing the rest of Judah's story and share some of his music, like the incredible tracks "Fate" and my personal favorite "Backdoor". Judah will also perform live during the broadcast, and with his home studio this is sure to sound amazing.Don't miss this one!As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". Dan converses with singer-songwriter Julia Pratt about her life, both in music and out: moving around a lot as a kid, living in China and Vietnam as an ex-pat, early songwriting, playing guitar for only about a year, and the opportunities that have come her way recently. Julia talks about her recent collaboration with Philly band Mt. Joy, opening for Hozier at World Cafe Live, writing songs for Disney, and how she's always aware that, at any moment, all this could go away. Her newest single, "A Little Love (feat. Mt. Joy)", is available now wherever you get digital music, as well as her previous singles. She's part of this year's Xponential Music Festival, as well as the Philly Music Fest in October.

With all of the tragedy that is going on in the world when was the last time you inhaled joy. How do you allow joy into your world? Joy is the prevalent even in the face of adversity. Sometimes we get so stressed and boggled down that you have to sometimes create joy. How you create joy is looking into the things that you desire or naturally gravitate towards. Finding ways to carve out that joy is something we have to be intentional with as well. We talk about joy, mental health, and creating space for the arts............................................On the podcast we have Josh Campbell, Josh is an award-winning teaching artist, arts administrator, and creative who has worked for arts and arts education organizations in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Over the course of his career, he has worked with various populations including students in grades K-12, English Language Learners, and the creative aging community in a variety of settings including libraries, shelters, virtual rooms, and juvenile justice facilities. As a facilitator he has developed workshops focusing on the intersection of creativity, leadership, equity, vulnerability, and black artmaking traditions. As an artist, he works in the choreopoem tradition, blending spoken word, movement, multimedia, and musicality of the late 90s to create spaces that reimagine the possibilities of freedom and liberation. Currently, he is a member of Jouska Playworks, a Philadelphia playwriting collective focused on amplified stories of the African American diaspora. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Maggie Mae. Maggie is one of the singer/songwriters that we saw perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in August. She is a soulful singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia who fronts an exciting and energetic Folk/Funk group under the same name. She pulls inspiration from the music she grew up on and the strong musical foundation her family built, along with the ever-evolving world of music around her to carve out a sound all her own. Combining genuine, heartfelt lyrics with catchy, cutting guitar riffs, her songs can either touch your soul or make you want to get up and dance. She has been described as “poppy, polished, talented, & promising,” by XPN's The Key's John Vettese. Originally hailing from Northern New Jersey, Maggie has always had music in her life. Her parents met in college and formed a bluegrass band called 'The Wild Oats,' and later performed throughout New Jersey with various traditional Irish bands. Her father instilled a love for 'all things string' from a very young age, and her mother always encouraged her to write and sing. With a Steinway Grand piano in her living room, and fiddles, penny whistles, hand drums, dulcimers, harps, mandolins, banjos, and guitars littered throughout her childhood home, Maggie has managed to pick up and write with just about any stringed instrument she can find. Growing up, she was always attending folk & bluegrass festivals, making sure she was up front for favorites like Martin Sexton, Dar Williams, Vance Gilbert, and Railroad Earth. Rock and Blues legends including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt were always on heavy rotation in her house. During her time attaining an Associate's Degree in Music Performance, Maggie cultivated a love and appreciation for classical, jazz, funk, world, and jam music, and deepened her knowledge of jazz and bluegrass standards. She also fell deeply in love with one-man-band greats Michael Hedges and Keller Williams, leading her to discover and navigate the world of percussive guitar and loop pedals and effects. She puts all of this together to inspire, and continuously develop, the sound she creates today. Maggie has managed to round up a talented, ever-rotating cast of characters to support her over the years, featuring some of Philly's most talented musicians. No matter which lineup is sharing the stage with her, the band always brings an impressively varied set of skills and an undeniable energy to the stage. Maggie Mae has shared bills with both local and national acts including Soulive, The Heavy Pets, Dawg Yawp, Lohai, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, the Ladles, and more at many of Philly and New Jersey's premiere music venues. Maggie Mae released her debut single "Can You Hear Me Now?" featuring Jake Leschinsky of Philadelphia's favorite funk band, Swift Technique, on bass in November of 2018. The band made their debut appearance at World Cafe Live on December 20th, 2018 with friends Taylor Kelly & Erik Kramer filling the bill in celebration. You can listen to "CYHMN" on Spotify and iTunes. At the end of 2019, Maggie won a contest to open for Soulive at the Ardmore Music Hall, where they made their debut as a 10-piece band. December marked the beginning of creating their debut album, recording the first single off the album, 'Hometown,' at Rittenhouse Soundworks with Michael Cumming engineering and Robby Webb producing. 'Hometown' is available everywhere. Maggie is currently in the studio recording her next LP, which is scheduled to release in early 2023. To find out more about Maggie and listen to some of her music, check out her website at www.maggiemaemusic.com. Click on either of the links below to listen to the conversation.
Dan talks with Sarah Dia Rue about her solo work, her band Twin Sines with her partner Justin King, the New Energy Music Collective non-profit they started, making her own video, how her solo music has changed over time, quitting the day job and going back to school for music, and much more. Sarah's latest single 'Say', featuring George 'Spanky' McCurdy and Nicholas Semrad, is available now wherever you get digital music, as is Twin Sines' 'Man Down' LP. The live version of 'Man Down', entitled 'Man Up @ World Cafe Live' is available to download free at Twin Sines' website.

Great Chat with Mark Brown of Hambone Relay. Mark talks about his music, move to the west coast and meeting Neal Evans. With elements of blues, jazz, funk and rock & roll, Hambone Relay redefines the modern organ trio with their unique brand of improvisational jam music. Since their founding in 2012, the band has played between 75-100 shows a year and have shared the stage with such great bands as Melvin Seals and JGB, Cris Jacobs, The James Hunter 6 and New Orleans legends Rebirth Brass Band. The band was founded in 2012 by organist Mark Brown. He began his career playing keyboards with the Baltimore-based jam band The Bridge. The band began playing a handful of shows and festivals and started to gain some recognition in the area. This would eventually lead to them recording their first album. The self-titled LP would feature 8 brand new original songs and 2 covers recorded live. This first album featured Devin Coleman on guitar and Kyle Moken on drums. On February 16, 2018, Hambone Relay played WXPN's “Free At Noon” concert to a packed house at World Cafe Live. John Udinsky had left the band and Luke Ferracone of The Groove Merchants had taken his place. The band shared the stage with British R&B singer James Hunter which would lead to a short tour in supporting The James Hunter 6 playing City Winery in New York City and MusikFest Cafe in Bethlehem, PA. Following this successful run, the band would hit the road for the rest of 2018 growing and writing new music along the way. In early 2021, the band relocated to Los Angeles and continues to record and play shows on both coasts. More dates are being released frequently and new music is currently in the works, set for release in 2021 and 2022. Their live shows are a mixture of danceable grooves, psychedelic overtones and improvisational jams. www.rocknrollfridays.com

Alyssa Dodge is a small town singer/songwriter from the Philadelphia area. She has been playing guitar for 10 years along with singing. Dodge began playing guitar at the age of six when she asked for a guitar for Christmas after being inspired by Taylor Swift when she listened to her albums on end for years growing up. Growing up she listened to a lot of country and pop music in the car with her parents as a kid. She has been compared to artists such as Sarah McLaughlin and Jewel. Dodge is inspired by artists such as Ed Sheeran and John Mayer. Dodge writes acoustic pop and folk music. Her lyrics come from her emotions and life experiences with friends to boys. She wants listeners to feel connected to the stories she tells through her songs. Dodge has played at venues such as World Cafe Live in Philadelphia and The Ardmore Music Hall to name a few. Dodge's debut album ‘Temporary Nothing', released in December of 2018, has been played on Spotify, Apple Music, and iHeartRadio along with streaming services from The United States to Australia. Her single “Back to You” has also been played on 94.7's WDSD a Dover Delaware country radio station as part of Nashville's Next segment.
Since the start of the pandemic we've seen a lot of businesses close and reopen and close again. Some industries are doing really well, but others have just been decimated. And the live music scene has taken it on the chin. For the most part, concert halls and music venues closed their doors in March and never really had a chance to open them back up. Philadelphia has a lot of great venues, but none more iconic than World Cafe Live. Hal Real, World Cafe Live's founder and CEO joins KYW Newsradio In Depth to catch everyone up on how venues and artists are trying to survive the pandemic and what you can do to help make sure there are venues to go back to when the pandemic is behind us. WURD host Charles Ellison chats with Ezechial Thurman, music technology teacher at Hill-Freedman World Academy, as well as David Bradley, producer at World Cafe Live about a new album by local students that has become one of the most poignant soundtracks of 2020.
Featuring fresh beats from my Bay Area boys Scott Amendola and Wil Blades; a new bop from Brooklyn indie legend Beyondo; vibey stuff from NYC composer/bassist/bandleader extraordinaire Ben Allison's guitar-based quartet; the brand new single from underground BK sensation Casual Male aka Tim Lappin; an unreleased track from the Charlie Hunter Trio in 2008 at World Cafe Live; jazz legends Carmen McRae + the MJQ; the pride of France, Air; and finally my mentor, brother, and baseball guru: the great Art Lande.
Every few days, an independent music venue announces it won't be able to reopen after the coronavirus pandemic. Philadelphia is home to about 20 independent venues -- places that welcome a variety of artists and bands from up and comers to national acts to open mics and garage bands. But since the coronavirus pandemic hit, indie music venues across the country are facing closures. Some have already shut their doors for good. Hal Real, founder of World Cafe Live and WCL Education joins KYW In Depth to talk about a local and national effort going on to save independent venues and hopefully welcome fans back soon, safely. Learn more about the National Independent Venue Association here: https://www.nivassoc.org/

G. Love & Special Sauce is one of the pioneers of the blues and hip hop style of music that is so prevalent these days. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1994 and made G. Love famous. With their latest album "The Juice" (2020), G. Love is out to prove that his "Philadelphonic" sound still has relevance and in fact can be empowering to his listeners. The man whose real name is Garrett Dutton is convinced: the world needs more G. Love, now more than ever. The Philadelphia native and I talked in an empty radio studio at WXPN-FM in University City, right before his soundcheck ahead of an album release party at World Cafe Live. He reached back into the early days of Special Sauce, talked about why he knows "The Juice" is about to be freshly squeezed on his adoring fans and even enjoys a surprise I brought with me. Recorded on December 13, 2019 at WXPN-FM in University City. Podcast includes the album's lead track "The Juice" at the end. In this podcast: G. Love tells us what he is loving these days (2:00), how he is empowering people through his music (2:58), why he knows "The Juice" is a great record (3:52), being careful with "actually" as a descriptor (4:55), why using Keb' Mo' as his producer was such a perfect fit (5:40), why G. Love is not meticulous at all, which goes into a discussion of how to decide if he should eat Burger King or McDonald's (7:55), takes us back to 1993-1994 when G. Love & Special Sauce released their debut album and were renting a loft in Old City (8:40), that legendary New Year's Eve party at said loft that led to 869 cigarette burns on the carpet (9:40), when G. Love & Special Sauce finally made it big (10:45), how he reacted when he walked into Tower Records on South Street and first saw himself on his album cover (11:50), why he at first didn't like his picture on that debut album (12:15), how people initially reacted to a white kid playing "garage rock and roll while rapping" (12:45), my surprise begins! (14:20), G. Love and I hum the Action News theme (14:42), the story behind how G. Love bought the guitar that became his signature instrument - the Crucianelli Elite (15:50), how G. Love became his nickname (18:10), going back to the days of street performing in Philadelphia (20:40), why he ran into problems and took his street performing to Boston - and which town made him more money (22:20) and finally the lead track off his new album "The Juice" (22:55).

Joseph Tayoun, an accomplished percussionist and educator specializing in Middle Eastern and World music based in Philadelphia discusses the history of Philadelphia's Middle East Night Club, his experience playing in a multitude of world music projects and his Star Trek Party band, The Roddenberries, upcoming release. Topics include: Tayoun as the torchbearer of the Philadelphia middle eastern music scene, an accomplished percussionist and the time spent at his family’s establishment “The Middle East” restaurant as part of the trendy middle eastern music scene. Discussion of the diverse array of middle eastern cultures playing music together. Tayoun’s background starting up as a drummer playing with various musicians of different backgrounds. Belly dancing and live music 7 nights a week was truly a special time for Tayoun as a youngster Tayoun’s father played the oud and he was immersed in live performance of Arabs, Armenians, Turks, Greeks, etc. Ray Merjanian (oud), Najib Nassar (organ), Chick Ganimian (oud) and Tayoun played with Chick when Tayoun was only 14 years old. Chick was known for his expressive and unique style of playing featuring syncopation and Tayoun was impacted greatly by this. Chick also played with Herbie Mann. Tayoun also played with Farhak Alpar (Saz), Garip (violin), Edmund Joseph (percussion/vocals), Joseph Budway (oud), Bobby Sarkissian (clarinet) and various others. The Middle East restaurant was the music hub for this style for many years (along with Café Yaz) until about 1997, and how some other restaurants offered late night music (Greek spots like Little Pete’s and also Buffalo Bills in West Philadelphia), and the emergence of the Nile restaurant. The Middle East booked shows with No Doubt and Bo Diddley, in addition to the standard Middle Eastern scene. Edmund Joseph’s arrival from Iran and his impact on the Middle Eastern music scene in both Philadelphia and New York City. Tayoun’s early years developing as a percussionist watching his father and the older musicians, and starting with tambourine and then percussion. Hamid Dolbashi’s performances with ney and zurna and his command of the music and how easily he fit in with other musicians. Tayoun’s time playing music with his future brother-in-law Roger Mgrdichian, and their strong onstage chemistry. Going from rock to fusion, with projects like Barakka and also Jaffna which features a tabla, oud and guitar, and how this has had an impact on his playing and keeping him sharp. Tayoun works with emotionally disturbed children in Morrisville, PA and shares his music and drumming which is very beneficial to the brain. Works with various musicians from all over the world, including Chinese and even sci-fi related artists (a Star Trek tribute band named “The Roddenberries”) at Fringe Festival. For the 50th Anniversary of the creation of Star Trek, Rod Roddenberry (Gene Roddenberry’s son) hired Tayoun and the band to perform in Las Vegas. Tayoun’s advice for playing percussion in the Middle Eastern style. The upcoming Middle East tribute night at Frankie Bradleys on June 13th with live music and belly dancers The upcoming CD Release party on June 27th at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia for The Roddenberries
Hi there, Music Lover. How are you doing today? Hanging in there? In need of some love and support today in your music journey? Never fear - we got you covered with this comforting and powerful conversation with Essence from Bernie and the Believers (essencemusic.com) and (bernieandthebelievers.com). Essence is a sixth-generation San Francisco native and award winning singer-songwriter. You will love her. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A sixth-generation San Francisco native, award winning singer-songwriter Essence has been immersed in art and music since childhood. And yes, her birth name really is ‘essence' – she was raised by quintessential flower children, her parents being two free spirited bohemian artists from the Haight-Ashbury ‘Summer of Love.' After winning the Grand Prize in the National Lilith Fair Talent Search, essence was signed to RCA Records, Way Cool/MCA Records, and Or Music (Los Lonely Boys, Matisyahu). She debuted with the successful indie release Conception, which garnered much Bay Area radio airplay and press and established a devoted fan base. Essence's sophomore release Mariposa garnered critical acclaim and prompted a national touring agenda which found her opening shows for artists Jason Mraz and Shawn Colvin. Her album Feels Like the Future won the Grand Prize for the Great American Song Contest and 2nd Place in the International Songwriting Contest (out of 15,000 entries). Her songs have been prominently featured on Nash Bridges, Lifetime's The Division, Access Hollywood, and NPR's Art of the Song. “Shape of You,” an emotional song about loss and healing, was the theme song in the film Motherland, which won the SXSW Audience Choice Award. Essence has opened for Tom Petty, Shawn Colvin, Chris Isaac, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Chrissie Hynde, Steve Miller, Pat Benatar, and Linda Perry. She has played at venues ranging from NYC's Bowery Ballroom to San Francisco's Fillmore and The Warfield, LA's Rose Bowl, and Philadelphia's World Cafe Live. In addition to writing folk/americana, pop, and rock songs, essence expanded her repertoire by creating a collection of charming, catchy tunes inspired by her son that turned out to have a life of their own becoming favorites of families nationwide, loved equally by parents and children alike. Her children's album, A Dog Named Moo, was entirely funded by loyal fans on Kickstarter and was picked up and released by My Kazoo/Universal Music. A Dog Named Moo is a multi-media project featuring a collection of 13 songs, a “T REXXXX” book, a smartphone app, and several music videos. essence is developing an educational curriculum based on the project. A Dog Named Moo was voted Top Kids Album of the Year by Daily Candy. Essence's latest long player could likely be her masterwork. It is a 12- track opus entitled Black Wings which chronicles the trials and tribulations of a failed marriage propelled by dishonesty and addiction. The undeniable weight of the pervasive subject matter is artfully handled with razor sharp couplets, gritty performances and smart arrangements underscoring obvious pain, but doing so with humor, wisdom and eloquence. Says essence of the album, “Black Wings is a story told out of sequence, each song is a snapshot of an event that led to the ultimate undoing of my 10-year marriage. These 12 songs capture betrayal, dark secrets, deception, revenge, emotional warfare, and the unbelievable horror of my worst fears being realized. The stories on this record emerge from a deadly silence, they dispel a facade of a happy family portrait, and they air the truth of what had been hidden for too long.” It is easily heard on songs like the epic, “Headed North,” whose video enjoyed dual premieres in late May with Folk Radio UK and The Huffington Post, the brilliant rave up “Camels & Diesel,” with its effortless melding of roots and rock chant complete with gang vocals and the sultry trad blues vibe of “Honeyed Out” are just a handful of numbers worth spotlighting on Black Wings. It is an album of tremendous depth, without question, putting essence on the same page with Lucinda Williams, Neko Case and Jenny Lewis, just to name a few, all of whom are veritable experts at turning anguish into song in the most poetic yet no-nonsense of ways. To that end, essence continues, “The ritual of writing and recording served as a lifeline to my survival during a very dark life passage. These songs led me through disbelief, rage, loss, grief, and ultimately to healing and reclaiming my personal power and the strength to leap into the unknown– knowing the fear of things staying the same was greater than the fear of things changing. Black Wings has been the key to my transcendence, punctuated by the unshakable synchronicity of art imitating life. As this music is born, I am flying free.” http://www.essencemusic.com/site -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------https://www.bernieandthebelievers.com/ If you found this episode to be healing, I hope you will consider donating to Bernie Dalton, a true musician in need of YOUR help: https://www.gofundme.com/sendberniehome Also check out the Tiny Desk Concert featuring Essence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPQsEoYHekg Hugs to all of you. From Philadelphia, singer/songwriter/musician Leah Smith bends R&B, gospel, and pop to create her smooth, signature sound. Her long awaited debut LP, Tenderheaded, soars with wit, potency, and Smith's lilting soprano that effortlessly imbues each lyric. Smith's start in professional music began in 2007. After attending the prestigious Creative and Performing Arts High School in Philadelphia, Smith toured extensively with GRAMMY award winning gospel group, Israel and New Breed. After a decision to leave the group and move back home, Smith won the 2008 Philly Rising Open Mic competition at one of Philly's premiere music venues, World Cafe Live. As part of the winner's package, Smith earned free studio time with which she recorded her revelatory debut EP, Beautifully Made. Visibility from this genre-bending project positioned Smith to be a sought after featured artist on many Christian Hip Hop records, most notably Trip Lee's hit "Sweet Victory." After an extensive break from music, which saw Smith marrying and beginning a family, Leah Smith is thrilled to reintroduce herself to the world with her beloved, new project, Tenderheaded, available on all digital platforms. In our third and final segment from Band Of Brewers at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia sponsored by Philly Beer Scene Magazine, things sort of fall apart. This tends to happen frequently on our last segments considering the amount of beer everyone involved had already consumed. It's fun, chaotic, and not at all informative. Kinda like you at a party after one hour too many. Give a listen, it'll make sense. Or it won't. It probably won't.
This is our first segment from Philly Beer Scene Magazine's Band Of Brewers at World Cafe Live in West Philly. On May 15, 2011 Hockessin Baptist church gathered with over 500 people at the historic World Cafe Live at the Queen Theater in Wilmington, Delaware. We were there to celebrate and worship and dream about a community of faith in the City of Wilmington. To our knowledge, this was the first worship service at the Queen Theater. We had an amazing time of worship. Thank you for joining us!A little background to our story...Hockessin Baptist Church opened LOMA Coffee at the corner of 3rd and Market Street in Wilmington, Delaware in November of 2010.A year ago the phrase "Market Street" was said for the first time at Hockessin Baptist Church. It wasn't long before we opened LOMA Coffee at 3rd and Market as a community coffee house. Little did we know, we would be joining a movement to change our city.
