Is Artificial Intelligence Conscious?

Many people are concerned that AI is at present Conscious or will become Conscious at some point. And if so, will they turn then on their human overlords? Or worse, they might remain calm and continue to be helpful at which point we would have on our hands a huge ethical issue: forcing intelligent beings to do slave-like work without any compensation or protection? The problem with most conversations about AI and consciousness is that most of us them are premised on a very poor understanding of Consciousness, founded upon very shaky and outdated materialist reductionist foundations. So I thought let's just set the record straight by offering a few perspectives from Sāmkhya, Advaita Vedanta and Tantra to answer this most pressing of questions! On this very auspicious day of Raksha Bandhana, the day when we honor our brothers and sisters and siblings, I want to firstly say to each and every one of you, you who are my dear brothers, sisters, siblings: I love you immeasurably!Thank you.No words will express my reverence to you, you who are Goddess embodied!May all my words be so many flowers offered in devotion and surrender at your lotus feet!May these words be themselves like the thread that I wrap around your wrists! (Because today many siblings and friends will be tying a thread or amulet around each other's wrists to signify their bond and mutual protection of one another!)Also today's pūrnimā (full moon) is Hayagrīva Jayanti, when we celebrate that divine emanation of Godhead with the horse's head who returned the Vedas after they were stolen (I.e who revived the Vedas with his Tantrik transmission) and who revealed the secret names of Lalitāmbika to the sage Agastya in the Brahmananda Purana! He is the Tantrik Guru par excellence and so today, in the name of discussing the subtlest and most esoteric of Tantrik doctrines, I want to explore what I consider to be among the most profound ideas expressed which we find in aphorism in Vasugupta's Śiva Sūtra: drśyam śarīram, “the entire universe is your body.”We have been exploring Tantrik subtle anatomy together for some weeks now, discussing nādis, cakras, prāna, Kundalinī etc. But in the background of all of this is this profoundly radical notion of embodiment, a metaphysical claim about the true nature of our essential being that once heard, can grant enlightenment immediately! It is precisely this claim that we will explore today. But you know, I noticed there was a very thrilling discussion in the Discord the other night about Artifical Intelligence and its role in spiritual communities! Amanda Mā suggested I say something about Consciousness and AI and since I can never refuse her (especially not on Raksha Bandhana!) I've decided to name tonight's talk “is AI Conscious?” In answering this question from the Tantrik point of view, we can explore the aforementioned aphorism, drśyam śarīram!Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST, Friday 10am PST and again Friday 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lectre. It is free and open to the public. Are you seeing targeted ads on social media or in your inbox from sock companies enticing you to buy their compression stockings? Well, YDF SUPER LISTENER, Amanda M. did!  We got a message on Instagram from @akmargie asking about compression socks, she specifically asked- “It seems they used to be marketed to people with medical issues and my grandma. Now they're marketed for every leg related thing in cute patterns and colors. And, BONUS! We have a little curbside consult with an expert in Exercise Physiology (and future guest on Your Doctor Friends) to give their two cents on whether compression socks aid in performance for runners and other athletes! Here's how their website sums up Sky Oro: “An activated community of badasses who are brave enough to be vulnerable and bold enough to help each other get to the top in their lives.” How cool is that!? Side note, friends, I have this future vision of a creative space/content creation space/rentable studio mixed with a coworking space, so I freaking attacked Amanda with all of my questions when I first met her in person and she was gracious enough to move the conversation to the pod. With us both living in Michigan it was pretty cool to read a book based here and be able to understand the small town vibe with all the crazy weather seasons. There is a love story so the romance isn't completely gone, but we mostly loved the relationships between the main character Bay and her cousins, Clove and Thistle. Their moms are crazy and wild, the side characters keep the plot lines interesting, and there are laugh out loud moments often. Give a try, you won't be disappointed. Daniel Levin is an award-winning writer living in Los Angeles. He holds an MFA in poetry from the University of California, Irvine, where he taught creative writing and rhetoric. His writing has appeared in Provincetown Arts, The Sarah Lawrence Review, The Westchester Review, and The Bennington Review. During his time at Sarah Lawrence College Dan, as a 19-year-old sophomore got involved with Larry Ray the leader of what turned out to be a dangerous cult. Dan has written about these harrowing experiences in his new memoir SLONIM WOODS 9 A stunning firsthand account of the creation of a modern cult and the costs paid by its young victims. In the first half of their two-part conversation, Daniel shares with Rachel how he first came into contact with Larry Ray the dangerous cult leader, currently on federal trial for sex trafficking, extortion, conspiracy, and a string of other crimes. He discusses how Larry was able to evade detection on campus even while living in dormitories. Together Rachel and Daniel examine what he was feeling as he fell under the control of this manipulative and dangerous man, pointing out the red flags and explaining what prevented him from seeing them at the time. Before you go: Rachel addresses the most asked question cult survivors get; "why did you stay"? with regard to Daniel but also in general pointing out the commonalities of those who linger in abusive situations. It is incredibly important to understand why we practice cultural traditions, if not for the sheer interest of the intellect, at least for the preservation of ancestral belief, and the empowerment of the individual attempting to avoid exploitation in the hands of commercial interests. Halloween is fun for some and terrifying for others. While some celebrate the day others condemn the holiday - holy day - as a Satanic ruse. Ironically, the origins of many traditions, from costumes and trick-or-treating to carved pumpkins and bonfires, relate to the warding off of darkness, cold, and therefore evil. Whereas some see the holy day rooted in human sacrifice, historically it was a day to commune with loved ones and honor the dead.

On a daily basis, family and criminal courts depend on mandated domestic violence services for resolving cases of intimate partner violence. Thousands of defendants and respondents in our city are required to complete these services in order to have visits with their children or get back in their homes. Yet there is little evidence of the effectiveness of existing services and there continues to be a reliance on outdated services such as Batterers Accountability programs. New York City policymakers have been examining this issue and have developed a Blueprint for Abusive Partner Intervention. A report published in 2018, “Seeding Generations: New Strategies Towards Services for People who Abuse,” took a comprehensive look at this issue and the need for a new model of services. The report acknowledges that services to families also need to consider the trauma that those who harm have been through. This panel on January 17, 2019 served as an opportunity for policymakers to have a dialogue with family court and criminal court practitioners about the current and future state of domestic violence services. Parenting is hard. You've heard that one before. But sometimes admitting what is hard about it means we share some things that are vulnerable for us. Parenting can throw us into questioning the parts of ourselves that are already tender and sensitive. We can also feel inadequte to be the mentors our children need, especially when it comes to their spirituality. For this message, Amanda speaks about her experiences as a mother of two boys, and a partner to someone who identifies as agnostic.
