The Mighty Manfred's guest this week is “The Mouth of the South” aka Jimmy Hart! You may know him as a WWE Hall of Famer, but in the Underground Garage we know him as a member of the Gentrys! Join the Mighty Manfred and Jimmy Hart for this week's Coolest Conversation, presented by Hard Rock

In the Flamingo Lounge with Rockabilly Greg

This week's guest In the Flamingo Lounge, Yod Crewsy, recorded on January 4, 2025, is a former guitarist with the Splatcats, founding member of the legendary garage rock and roll band the JackLords and band leader of the Dark Marbles. Yod opened for Roy Orbison at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo with the JackLords in 1989.  Other infamous moments include him opening for the Ramones at Fredonia State College with the revved-up punk band the SplatCats.  His most recent achievment was the airing of recent recording of "Runaround" from his "Brit-Pop Faves" CD on Little Steven's Underground Garage on SiriusXM.

Steve Conte became lead guitarist in one legendary band, the New York Dolls, and co-wrote half of his latest album, The Concrete Jangle, with the main singer-songwriter of another one: Andy Partridge of XTC. Conte is a longtime New York working musician who has played with such artists as Paul Simon, Peter Wolf, Phoebe Snow and, in a great story, Chuck Berry. Now he has released two solo albums on Stevie Van Zandt's Wicked Cool label and has two songs vying for the Coolest Song of the World 2024 on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Here he recalls what it was like to join the New York Dolls and to work with David Johansen—and with guitar in hand, he tells how he got connected with Partridge and demonstrates how the two of them wrote some very catchy songs together. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Massapequa, New York, Phantom grew up listening to his parents' jazz records and began playing drums by the age of ten. He took lessons with Mousie Alexander, who played with Benny Goodman, studying jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 1970s, he was playing in bands with his childhood friend, bassist Lee Rocker. They soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer to form Stray Cats.[ When performing with Stray Cats, Phantom did not sit behind a standard drum kit like most drummers, but instead opted to play in a standing position with a minimalist set-up of bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and crash cymbal. During downtime from Stray Cats, Phantom played in swing, rockabilly, and jump blues combo The Swing Cats with Rocker and ex-Polecats guitarist Danny B. Harvey,[6] as well as rockabilly and glam rock project Phantom, Rocker & Slick with Rocker and guitarist Earl Slick.  In 1985, he appeared with Carl Perkins and a host of other musicians including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds and Rosanne Cash for Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session in London, England. Phantom also played with Jerry Lee Lewis. He later formed Col. Parker with former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, releasing the album Rock n Roll Music in 2001.[ Most recently, he has been involved in the eponymous roots-rock band Slim Jim's Phantom Trio; rock-and-roll supergroup Dead Men Walking with Kirk Brandon and Mike Peters, and Captain Sensible;[ and rockabilly supergroup The Head Cat with Danny B. Harvey and the late Motörhead vocalist and bassist Lemmy.  He also hosts the Rockabilly Raveup show on Little Steven's Underground Garage. In March 2023, Barnes announced the supergroup The Barnestormers, featuring Barnes, Cheney, Phantom with Jools Holland and Kevin Shirley. Slim Jim Phantom is the Stray Cats' drummer, host of “Slim Jim's Rockabilly Raveup” on Little Steven's Underground Garage and a cool-cat storyteller. He takes us through the Stray Cats' formation, with bassist and elementary school classmate Lee Rocker and singer-guitarist Brian Setzer, and their early days as a “rockabilly bar band” playing New York clubs like CBGB before they relocated to London. The band had recorded two British albums by the time a U.S. label released the compilation Built for Speed, which, powered by the hit singles “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut,” turned the Stray Cats into unlikely early '80s stars. Why did the band split after the follow-up album—and reunite after solo projects? What's happening with the Stray Cats now? And who is on Phantom's rockabilly Mount Rushmore?

Austin Texas quartet GENTLEMEN ROGUES celebrate aggressive guitar pop anthems — bearing the influences of The Replacements, Superdrag, Jawbreaker, and similar visionaries — and have been gaining momentum and increased attention. Since their debut in 2011, the band — Danny Dunlap (guitar/vocals), Josh Power (drums), John Christoffel (guitar), and Dave Hawkins (bass, vocals) — have honed their hooks over numerous singles, EPs, and the 2022 full-length collection, A History of Fatalism. Springsteen sideman Steven van Zandt hand-picked their single “Do the Resurrection!” as the “Coolest Song in the World” on his SiriusXM radio show, Little Steven's Underground Garage. Garnering heavy airplay, listeners worldwide agreed, voting “Do the Resurrection!” as one of the top ten “Coolest Songs of 2021.” Gentlemen Rogues have supported diverse acts like the Lemonheads, Smoking Popes, the Dandy Warhols, Mrs Magician, and Riverboat Gamblers on stages across the U.S. and the UK. In recent years Gentlemen Rogues opened for indie-punk icons Superchunk and Bob Mould, who personally selected the band to provide sole support on the Texas leg of his Distortion and Blue Hearts tour. The album is a scrapbook of vignettes featuring endearing but poetically flawed protagonists sketched with Diane's literate flair and doused in classic NYC rock n' roll swagger. It features a duet with Alejandro Escovedo, an appearance by James Maddock, and a song produced by Jesse Malin. Previously, she released THE WHITE SEA, with the classic song "Motorcycle", produced by The Dream Syndicates' Steve Wynn, which became a hit on Little Steven's Underground Garage. About Slim Jim Phantom As the legendary drummer for the Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom, alongside bandmates Brian Setzer and Lee Rocker, spearheaded the neo-rockabilly movement of the early 80s. With a love for 50's Rock and Roll, the Stray Cats took inspiration from that bygone era and mixed with their youthful energy and aggression to produce the updated hard-edged rockabilly sound that saw them conquer London, Europe and later the U.S., gaining fans among the likes of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and Robert Plant along the way. In addition to the Stray Cats, Jim has worked with some of the world's top artists. He has played a part in many successful groups – notably Phantom, Rocker and Slick (featuring long time David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick) which produced two popular albums; and Dead Men Walking, an all-star affair which has boasted original members of The Sex Pistols, The Cult and Big Country among the rotating line-up. Jim also enjoyed a stint playing with the rock-n-roll originator, Jerry Lee Lewis, and even performed in a now-mythological band called The Cheap Dates with acting legend Harry Dean Stanton, one of Jim's longtime pals. Jim has worked on numerous other projects, including his own explosive self-named roots-rock trio, and HeadCat, co-starring Lemmy Kilmister and Danny B. Harvey, and Jim's musical project The Jack Tars, a band co-founded with old friends, and former Dead Men Walking bandmates Captain Sensible and Mike Peters and SJP's long time true rockabilly pal Chris Cheney of Australia's top rockin' band The Living End. He is also deeply committed to charitable works, too: he climbed both Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro for Love Hope Strength Foundation (an organization co-founded by Mike Peters of The Alarm that benefits cancer research).  Jim hosts Rockabilly Rave Up on Little Steven's Underground Garage on SiriusXM. He is known as "The Honest Mechanic," where he features new rockabilly acts and the classics. Jim also hosts Slim Jim Phantasy on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, where he shares his other passion, baseball, and fantasy sports in general.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Steve Conte Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What a great time, as always, when old pal Steve Conte sits down to chat and sing. That voice! Those songs! The stories! Steve played his latest Coolest Song in the World, Fourth of July, co-written with Andy Partridge of XTC, which was a dream come true for Steve and anyone fortunate enough to hear it. He opened the show with that tune, and then almost at the close, after hearing the back story of his admiration, their meeting, growing friendship, and how it bloomed into co-writing 5 of the songs on Steve's upcoming LP coming soon from Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records, and the particulars of this one in particular, after a bit of coaxing, we got to hear it again, with new meaning and appreciation. It's not oft such an opportunity presents. Worthy. And rockin' fun! Steve, who started out on drums, courtesy of his obsession with The Beatles, and Ringo, had a couple of great tales about that, how he switched to guitar, bouncing brother John to bass, exactly where his gift belonged, Steve's first album, first concert, and how that led to his greatest onstage experience. No spoilers here… Nor to his second, third, well, his top five. Suffice it to say, he covered playing with Chuck Berry, singing with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle, the Everly Brothers, opening for Alice Cooper, getting huge gigs without auditions… joining The New York Dolls, and Michael Monroe, whom after 13 years, he still tours with today, being produced by Todd Rundgren… and the songs that keep pouring out of him, many of which have garnered Coolest Song in the World on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Steve Conte is one of the coolest guys in the world, with one of the greatest rock voices I've ever heard. Fervent fans of The Doughboys know their whole history, detailed on the Rock N' Raw DVD – they first got together in ‘64 and played in various permutations through the rest of the 60's. They gigged incessantly, won a battle-of-the-bands on Zacherle's Disc-o-Teen TV show, were the house band at the legendary Café Wha? in New York City in the summer of '68. They opened for every act imaginable including The Beach Boys, and released two 45's, Rhoda Mendelbaum and Everybody Knows My Name, on Bell Records (which later became Arista Records) before splitting up for what they thought was for good. The band members went their separate and interesting ways – Myke Scavone fronted hard rock ensemble Ram Jam who scored an international hit with Black Betty; Richie Heyman played drums for the likes of Link Wray, Brian Wilson and Jonathan Richman while simultaneously pursuing an acclaimed career as a singer/songwriter (under his full moniker Richard X. Heyman); Mike Caruso landed session work with such notable pop producers as Bo Gentry and Kenny Laguna, and even jammed with Jimi Hendrix!Mike CarusoSince the band re-formed in 2000 at a surprise birthday party for drummer Richie Heyman's birthday, The Doughboys have released six albums (Is It Now?, Act Your Rage, Shakin' Our Souls, Hot Beat Stew, Front Street Rebels and Running For Covers), numerous singles, and a documentary film with accompanying live disc (Rock N' Raw). They've played up and down the eastern half of the country, often sharing bills with such luminaries as The Pretenders, The Yardbirds, The Electric Prunes, Roberta Flack, Robin Trower and many others. They performed at the historic “Who Shot Rock n' Roll?” exhibition at the Allentown Museum, at an all-star tribute to George Harrison at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, at the “Long May You Run” benefit at The Hamilton Live in Washington, DC, and have appeared at prestigious venues like B.B. King's, the Sellersville Theater, the Stone Pony and the Starland Ballroom. Lead singer Myke Scavone is now also a member of The Yardbirds, touring the world as they continue to spread the gospel of the golden era of Rock n' Roll.In 2005, Gar Francis (of Stones tribute band Sticky Fingers fame, as well as work with Billy Idol and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and The Raiders) entered the picture after the untimely passing of founding member and brilliant guitarist Willy Kirchofer. When Gar joined the band, The Doughboys branched out into recording their own original material, and it wasn't long before they entered the recording studio and laid down tracks for Is It Now?, the first album of their long and storied career. The Doughboys' songs have become huge favorites on radio around the world, especially with Little Steven Van Zandt, who named Shakin' Our Souls his favorite album of 2012, and who has bestowed the much sought after rank of “Coolest Song In The World” on eight of The Doughboys' songs on his Underground Garage channel on Sirius/XM radio. Additionally, Doughboys music is used extensively in film, television and advertising, including in such TV shows as “The Big Bang Theory”, “Californication,” “Breaking Amish” and “The Good Guys” and in the film “Coming Through The Rye.”

¿A quién te diriges?
