John Maytham speaks to Mark Johnston, an exco member of Treekeepers Cape Town, about why it would be better to have a focus on tree planting in the Cape in late April, rather than during National Arbor Week in September. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”. Embodiment affects how we understand personhood, moral status, and whether this life is our only life. Mark Johnston, Henry Putnam University Professor, Princeton University, explains how competing theories of mind and matter shape the question of whether a will could have an embodiment other than its present one. Johnston examines the failures of functionalism, reductive and non-reductive materialism, and strong emergence, along with the role of will, awareness, and evolved animal life, helping clarify what embodiment really is. He explains why the will matters for moral respect and points toward the possibility that embodiment may not be limited to a single life. Series: "UC Berkeley Graduate Lectures" [Humanities] [Show ID: 41446]

As the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion in Ukraine approaches, vets in the country – many of whom are fighting or serving as combat medics on the front lines as well as managing their clinics – are facing shortages of vital medicines and equipment. At the same time, rabies cases in wild and stray animals are on the rise, putting vets in further danger during the conflict. Ukrainian vet Daria Ponomarenko and ProSalus Foundation vice-president Mark Johnston, who visited the country last year, join Chris Simpson to discuss the issues facing vets as the war rages on and appeal for vital donations. Veterinary professionals can donate medicines, equipment and supplies, or make a financial donation, at the ProSalus website [https://prosalusfoundation.org/our-projects/#ukraine-section] or by emailing Dr Johnston at vice-president@prosalusfoundation.org. ProSalus is also holding a silent auction [https://www.vettimes.com/news/vets/wellbeing-at-work/art-sale-aims-to-boost-ukrainian-veterinary-work] of Ukrainian art [https://prosalusfoundation.org/product-category/different-together-series-by-anna-khomchyk/], raising funds for the Ukrainian Small Animal Veterinary Association. Mark Johnston - Australian Heroes of World War II: Remarkable stories of battlefield courage To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Mark has pulled together the stories of 700 Australian soldiers who performed acts of incredible bravery – some of whom received official recognition for their courageous acts and others who did not. Among their number are men in leadership and those of lower ranks, soldiers engaged in combat and others – like stretcher bearers and doctors – who did not wield weapons. He discusses the battles themselves, the inescapable impacts of these acts of bravery, and the importance of recording them to remember. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A planned $3 billion inland port in Otago hopes to support soaring freight volumes in the region. Construction of the Milburn Quadrant, north of Milton, is expected to start within two years. It comes as forecasts predict freight volumes from Central and South Otago are expected to grow 30-40% over the next decade. Project Developer Mark Johnston told Mike Hosking the development will include a 55-hectare inland port, offering freight storage and connected to the South Island's main trunk rail line. He says it will be similar to Hamilton's Ruakura inland port and offer land for other industrial development. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Genesis eleven story of the tower of Babel is one we need to pay attention to in our social media saturated world. In his book, This World is Not My Home, Mark Johnston writes that man's motive behind the vast tower of Babel efforts was, as we read in Genesis eleven four, “to make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” Johnston continues, “the Babel instinct in the human psyche has lingered on through the entire history of our race. From man's attempts to literally build a name for himself by constructing great works of architectural genius, to his efforts to establish kingdoms and empires, human beings have tried to secure themselves in their world through all manner of tangible means. We try to build our own little worlds without God through our careers, achievements, families, and other things in the hope they will provide the security and sense of identity we crave.” Parents, teach your kids to find their identity in Jesus Christ alone.
