Na een turbulent begin van het jaar laten de aandelenmarkten herstel zien. Oké, als u belegd had in een wereldaandelenindex had u dit jaar nog niets verdiend. Maar dat is een stuk beter dan wat iedereen begin april vreesde. Toen was iedereen bang voor de effecten van een mogelijke handelsoorlog. Nu zijn die importtarieven er, maar ze hebben niet geleid tot de gevreesde handelsstrijd en zijn blijkbaar geen probleem meer. Zoals zo vaak is het verhaal belangrijker voor de koersen dan de daadwerkelijke feiten. In ieder geval op korte termijn. Voorafgaand aan deze Liberation Day-correctie was er de angst voor de DeepSeek-impact. Weinig beleggers konden goed inschatten of het Chinese AI-bedrijf DeepSeek nu daadwerkelijk een verandering in de AI-industrie zou veroorzaken of niet. Persoonlijk had ik verwacht dat het bedrijf wat meer invloed zou hebben op de AI-investeringen. Immers als één partij het allemaal veel goedkoper en efficiënter kan, waarom zou je dan nog zo veel investeren? En de investeringen drijven de superwinsten van die techbedrijven. Gezien de enorme investeringsgolf is het maar de vraag of iedereen er ook zo veel aan gaat verdienen. Voor wie lessen uit het verleden wil leren, kijk naar KPN in 2000. Dat investeerde miljarden in UMTS-vergunningen. Aan de investeringen lag het niet. Aan de winstcapaciteit van die investeringen wel. De cijfers spreken boekdelen: de UMTS-vergunningen leverden de Nederlandse staat in 2000 €2,7 mrd op, maar bij de verlenging in 2016 werd er nog maar €23 mln betaald. Nu de DeepSeek-angsten zijn overgewaaid is het logisch dat de koersen van de technologieaandelen zich voor het grootste deel hebben hersteld. Maar daar was ook een fundamentele reden voor. De kwartaalwinsten van deze bedrijven waren meer dan prima. De zeven techreuzen, de Magnificent Seven, boekten een winststijging van maar liefst 28% in het tweede kwartaal. De overige niet-zo-magnificent493 bedrijven in de S&P 500 hadden een winststijging van slechts 2%. Dat is niet zoveel anders dan we in Europa hebben gezien. Als u nog eens iemand hoort praten over de superieure groei van het Amerikaanse bedrijfsleven, bedenk dan dat dit vooral over de techreuzen gaat. Toegegeven, die hebben zij wel en wij niet. Er zijn echter hier en daar wat vraagtekens te plaatsen bij die enorme groei. Jim Chanos, bekend van het ontmaskeren van de fraude bij Wirecard en Enron, heeft die. Hij stelt dat die AI-superchips een veel te lange afschrijvingstermijn hebben, waardoor de afschrijving te laag is en de winsten geflatteerd. Zo te horen heeft hij een punt, maar in het huidige beurssentiment weegt het AI-verhaal zwaarder dan de boekhouding. Aan de andere kant: een hedgefondsmanager als Chanos praat natuurlijk altijd vanuit zijn eigen positie. Misschien wordt het tijd om zelf die jaarverslagen eens te pakken en met eigen ogen het verhaal te lezen. The Wall Street Journal wrote that “Wall Street's best-known bear is going into hibernation" after the legendary short seller Jim Chanos announced he would close his main hedge funds late last year, in part due to diminishing interest in stock picking. Short selling, which bets on drops in asset prices, wins when companies and governments fail and has gained a predatory reputation over the years.
