A desire to level the playing field, when it comes to lobbying. Health Coalition Aotearoa's pushing for stronger regulations alongside the Helen Clark Foundation and Transparency International. They want a public register of lobbyist meetings, a cooling-off period to prevent ex-ministers immediately becoming lobbyists, and a lower limit forcing someone to disclose political donations. Co-Chair, Boyd Swinburn says told Andrew Dickens those with vested interests are getting a bigger say on public policy, than groups pushing for positive social outcomes. He says nothing wrong with balanced lobbying -- which gives policy for public good, not private good. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We won't know until after this election who has donated to the political parties for this campaign and how much they've handed over. But voters are sceptical, with some of our listeners questioning the role of billionaires in our politics. Evalyn from Bendigo in Victoria asked us about the mining magnate Gina Rinehart. What influence do donations to political parties get you?Today, Kate Griffiths from the Grattan Institute explains what we know about political donors. Send us a textGrowing up in a working-poor family, State Representative Joe Miller (OH-53) brings a gritty, firsthand perspective to the table that challenges the status quo. Our discussion weaves through Joe's life experiences and combines them with insights from Matthew Desmond's "Poverty by America" to expose the harsh realities of poverty and the systems that cement it. Together, we question the efficacy of political campaign spending and school voucher programs, and how they might unintentionally deepen the chasms of inequality they aim to bridge. The conversation pivots to the overpowering economic influence in politics, unpacking the staggering sums funneled into political advertising and the media's role in shaping public opinion. We reflect on how the middle class, once the backbone of democracy, has been increasingly sidelined by a wealth gap that grows ever wider. The notion that addressing this wealth gap is a provocative one, challenging the priorities of today's billionaires as well as the affluent, and their potential impact on democracy. Our dialogue culminates in a critical examination of education funding and the role of billionaires in government. As an educator, Joe shares poignant stories of hungry students whose potential is stifled not by ability, but by basic unmet needs. We critique the school voucher system's unintended consequences of increasing segregation and undermining public education. Finally, we underscore the urgency of separating wealth from government to preserve the democratic ideals upon which our society is built. Maria Varmazis, host of N2K's daily space show T-Minus, joins Dave and Joe to share the story of a relentless wave of political donation texts that go well beyond simple annoyance, revealing an unsettling impact on vulnerable populations. CNN's investigation exposes how these texts, with their urgent and personal tone, have led seniors, including those with dementia, to make thousands of donations—sometimes unknowingly amassing hundreds of thousands of dollars for campaigns. Joe's story highlights a dash cam video capturing a car colliding with another vehicle while backing up on a busy highway. The footage raises questions about driver awareness and road safety in high-traffic situations. Dave's story shares the alarming potential of OpenAI's real-time voice API, which allows scammers to create AI agents capable of executing phone scams for as little as $0.75. Researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign revealed that these agents can autonomously conduct scams, raising serious concerns about the misuse of voice-enabled AI technology despite previous safety precautions. Chris and Amy welcome Kyung Lah, CNN's Senior Investigative Correspondent, to discuss a troubling investigation into elderly individuals who, often unaware due to cognitive decline, are making significant political donations. This investigation reveals how many seniors, including retired housekeepers and teachers, are targeted by campaigns through persuasive text messages, leading to donations totaling thousands of dollars. Kyung highlights the case of an 80-year-old Texas engineer who, struggling with dementia, unknowingly donated half a million dollars to former President Donald Trump's campaign, depleting his savings.

New voter-ID laws, same-day registration bans, and vigilante poll watchers: How are these challenges impacting BIPOC communities' ability to vote? This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: Just this month, billionaire immigrant and Republican mega donor Elon Musk amplified a post that seemed to suggest that the system would work better if voting was restricted only to “high status men.” Voting should be simple, but we're seeing more and more barriers — especially for BIPOC voters — this election. From purges of the rolls, to efforts to eliminate same-day voter registration, new voter-ID laws, and vigilante style “election integrity” watchdogs turning up at the polls, voters in many states and tribal nations face serious challenges they're working hard to overcome. What's it all mean for the candidates and, more importantly, the millions of eligible voters of color whose ability to cast their vote could ultimately decide the outcome of this election? For this episode of our monthly feature, Meet the BIPOC Press, Laura is joined by co-host Kadia Tubman of the Scripps News broadcast network, along with guests Chenjerai Kumanyika, NYU journalism professor and host of Empire City, a gripping new podcast on the origins of the NY police, and investigative journalist Christopher Lomahquahu of the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism within the Cronkite School at Arizona State University. Together we investigate who gets to vote safely, and who is being excluded from participating in democracy. Will all who want to vote be able to?“. . . Voter disenfranchisement has been so consistent that we might as well go ahead and call it a principle of American so-called democracy. Even in the constitutional convention, we know that there were efforts to make sure that not everyone can vote.” - Chenjerai Kumanyika“. . . It wasn't until a hundred years ago that Native Americans were granted citizenship in this country . . . With the [groups] Western Native Voice, Arizona Native Vote, other organizations that you're finding across these different states, they understand that history but it hasn't deterred them from looking ahead as far as what they can do to activate those other voters, especially the youth . . .” - Christopher Lomahquahu (Akimel O'odham/Hopi)“Whenever I report on or hear about election integrity or election security, the phrase ‘safe and secure' seems to tag along. It's almost like it's replacing the term free and fair elections . . .” - Kadia TubmanGuests:• Chenjerai Kumanyika: Host, Empire City & NYU Professor• Christopher Lomahquahu (Akimel O'odham/Hopi): Investigative Reporter, ASU Howard Center for Investigative Journalism• Kadia Tubman: Disinformation Correspondent, Scripps News Full Episode Notes are located HERE. Federal investigators say a California business owner used a karaoke-bar-turned-brothel to funnel campaign donations to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and other members of the city's political class. Andy Duong, whose family works as Oakland's curbside recycling contractor, is accused of having surrogates hand out $18,000 to various political candidates from 2016 to 2018, according to court documents obtained by Bay Area news outlets. An undercover sting at the brothel in 2018 led to three arrests over accusations of drug and human trafficking. A former manager arrested at the front business is one of the suspected “straw donors” in Mr. Duong's alleged fundraising scheme.

Plus in other news, MP's and Lords play ‘ping pong' with the Government's Rwanda Bill, and there's a new name in the Tory leadership frame.Competent and popular politician spotted at Downing Street shock: Nish and Coco discuss President Obama' popping in for a cup of tea with Rishi Sunak. Can she just stop making them? Or does that betray her platform, which is based on the idea of folks being politically engaged? This week on Should I Quit? Beth and Vanessa discuss what to do when you feel like a fraud. --This show is completely funded by Patreon, and we are so grateful to our supporters who make it possible.
