Robert Edsel: American Sacrifice, Dutch Freedom and Enduring Gratitude

To remind us that civilizational alliances are not merely transactional, Robert Edsel tells personal World War II stories from the rural province of Limburg.  Before dawn on May 10, 1940, Hitler's forces invaded the Netherlands, shattering more than 100 years of peace. The Dutch lived through four-and-a-half years of occupation until September 1944, when American forces reached Limburg—the last portion of Europe west of Germany to be liberated by the Allies. Edsel follows 12 main characters over a six-year span, including Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cole, the first member of the 101st Airborne to receive the Medal of Honor; Sergeant Jeff Wiggins of the 960th Quartermaster Service Company, who escaped the poverty and racism of Alabama just to face more indignities; and Frieda van Schäik, a teenager who fell in love with an American soldier.  Drawing on letters, diaries, and other historical records, Edsel shows the painful price of freedom, capturing both the horrors of war and the transcendent power of gratitude by revealing the extraordinary measures the Dutch have taken to thank their liberators. Remember Us, by Robert Edsel-#1 New York Times bestselling author of The Monuments Men (which was turned into a blockbuster film with an all-star cast including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett) -begins in the pre-dawn hours of Hitler's invasion of Western Europe on May 10, 1940, when his forces rolled into the small rural province of Limburg in the Netherlands shattering more than 100 years of peace. Their freedom gone, the Dutch lived through four-and-a-half years of occupation until American forces reached Limburg in September 1944, the last portion of Western Europe liberated by the Allies before their advance on Nazi Germany slammed to a halt.Like The Monuments Men, Remember Us is an ensemble piece that follows twelve main characters over a six-year span, zeroing in on ordinary people including Frieda van Schäik, a teenager who falls in love with an American soldier; Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cole, the first member of the 101st Airborne to receive the Medal of Honor; and Sergeant Jeff Wiggins of the 960th Quartermaster Service Company, who escaped the poverty and racism of Alabama for yet another indignity-digging graves.Drawing on never-before-seen letters, diaries, and other historical records, Edsel shows the painful price of freedom, on the battlefields and inside American homes. In this rich, dramatic, and suspenseful story, he captures both the horrors of war and the transcendent power of gratitude, showing the extraordinary measures the Dutch have taken to thank their liberators. Remember Us is exactly the book we need-a reminder that grief is universal, that humanity knows no national or racial boundaries, and that we all want to be remembered, somehow, someway, by somebody.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

¿Casualidad? ¿Injusticia?

Send us a Text Message.TGTPTU Book Club returns this week with Sir Christopher Nolan's first and only adaption, i.e., THE PRESTIGE (2006), with bookworm and repeat guest Shannon joining from The Bunker.   Post-Batman Begins, Sir Nolan returned to his love of puzzle-box stories to bring to life the work of another Chris (Christopher Priest) while casting a third Chris (Christian Bale) as a rival magician to a non-Chris (Hugh Jackman) to make one of top three magician rivalry movies wide-released in 2006.   Sir Nolan omits the present-day framing story around Priest's novel to focus on the period and the rivalry between magicians Angier (Jackman) and Borden (Bale) as the former seeks revenge on the latter for his wife's death (yes, it's another rare Nolan movie with a dead wife but you actually get two dead ladies—BOGO (Bury One, Get One)—for your money ). Keeping with the novel, each magician has a secret that allows him to perform a teleported man trick, with Borden's secret seeming to be the anticipated, singular trick of the movie until the rug-pull at the end when the Great Sir C. Nolan the Magnificent abracadabras Angier's clone-killing conclusion for a prestige of his own .  Uncontroversially, Scarlett Johansson is poorly used as the rivalling magicians' assistants while David Bowie gets one of the best entrances in cinema history portraying Nicholas Tesla, a man with his own bitter professional rivalry and a last name that is impossible to say 18 years after this movie premiered without thinking of the car, much like what once beset my great-grandmother Edsel and our uncle PT “Cruiser” Koral.  Listen along as Jason Statham pops in, award-winning thespian Michael Caine is put on blast by our special guest, and the hosts break down why this might be the most “Nolan-y” Nolan film Sir Chris has made.  THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

Case in point, a 1952 Henry J that once belonged to his dad, and that Dan has now taken under his wing for a restoration and rebirth if you will - but here's the thing, the car hasn't been on the road since 1967. Originally purchased by his father back in the late 1950s, it was used as a daily driver for some time. It then went to a family member, until after years of use the little Henry J was put out to pasture in the family barn until Dan rescued it and shipped it to California. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, Dan Stoner sits down with host Mike Musto to tell us what's in store for the Henry J that's been in his family for almost 70 years.

Taking the space of Lincoln's discontinued MKC, the Lincoln Corsair works as an entry point into Ford's legacy luxury arm. While the Corsair name was used as a highly-optioned Edsel, and as a sedan in other markets, Lincoln's bite at the Corsair apple helps build on both the marques and the nameplates legacy. As part of the company's push to do away with its Mark naming conventions, the Lincoln Corsair helps the company navigate the high seas of the luxury compact crossover market. Giving this reborn compact crossover a full name might help with brand appeal down the line, but it also helps separate the similarly navigation-themed products from each other in Lincoln's lineup. While a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 powers the entry-level Corsair Premier and Reserve models, sitting atop the Corsair hierarchy is the plug-in hybrid Grand Touring model. This PHEV blends a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle I4 with a CVT and an electric motor to net 266 hp combined. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Lincoln Corsair and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of the Corsair and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Murphy takes you along for a live drive review of the Lincoln Corsair Ground Touring. Adding to these segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Lincoln Corsair, its competition, and its spot in the market. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the Lincoln Corsair special.

"Farewell to Edsel: A Mosaic of Memories as the Curtain Falls"In the quiet corridors of automotive history, a chapter comes to a close as we bid a poignant farewell to Edsel, the once-bold venture that dared to dream in hues of innovation and elegance. Like a vibrant mural fading with time, the final strokes of Edsel's narrative evoke a spectrum of emotions, from nostalgia to a tinge of melancholy. As the sun sets on this automotive icon, we are reminded of the kaleidoscope of aspirations that painted its inception. Named after Edsel Ford, the son of the legendary Henry Ford, the brand emerged in the late 1950s with a promise to redefine the driving experience. From the outset, Edsel was conceived as an embodiment of American optimism, with sleek designs and cutting-edge features destined to captivate the hearts of a burgeoning post-war society.Picture the showroom floors, once aglow with the radiant sheen of chrome and the lustrous curves of Edsel's signature grille. Rows of cars, each a canvas of craftsmanship, stood poised to embark on a journey through the colorful tapestry of American roads. The distinct vertical grille, affectionately dubbed the "horse collar," reflected a bold departure from the conventional, a testament to Edsel's audacious spirit.Alas, as the years unfolded, the automotive landscape shifted, and Edsel found itself navigating a labyrinth of challenges. Market dynamics, unforeseen obstacles, and perhaps an overzealous ambition to stand out in a sea of rivals all played a part in the eventual decline. The automotive ballet once choreographed with precision, stumbled into a melancholic pas de deux. The news of Edsel's closure, like a sudden gust extinguishing the flames of a once-brilliant fire, left enthusiasts and nostalgists in a quiet reflection. Each model, from the Pacer to the Corsair, had etched its mark in the annals of automotive design. The Edsel Citation, a symbol of elegance, and the Edsel Ranger, a paragon of reliability, both found themselves stranded in the realm of automotive history.Walking through the remnants of Edsel dealerships now echoes of a bygone era, one can almost hear the whispers of conversations that once animated these spaces. Salesmen extolling the virtues of a sleek convertible, families debating the merits of each model, and the hum of engines awakening a sense of anticipation—all now linger like spectral imprints on the showroom floor.Yet, as we mourn the sunset of Edsel, we must also celebrate the indelible mark it left on the automotive canvas. In its brief existence, Edsel dared to dream in Technicolor, introducing innovations that would eventually influence the industry. The iconic teletouch transmission, a futuristic touch-button gear selector, was a testament to Edsel's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology. As we bid adieu to Edsel, let us remember it not as a failure, but as a symphony that, for a fleeting moment, played a unique melody in the grand opera of automotive history. The curtain falls, but the resonance of Edsel's colorful overture will forever echo in the collective memory of those who marveled at its brilliance.

Chicago's Otherworld Theater Company is America's only non-profit theatre dedicated exclusively to exploring the genres of science-fiction and fantasy (and occasionally horror). Otherworld's Dylan Schaefer talks about Starship Edsel, the fortnightly improvised Star Trek parody (created by Brandon Brylawski) that combines improv, satire, LARPing, and classic nerdery. Dylan reveals how Star Trek led to his life in the theatre; how Otherworld creates an ecosystem for multiple universes; how Star Trek is in its second golden (or possibly silver) age; how theatre as an art form doesn't lean into sci-fi/fantasy as much as it should; a special guest appearance by a genuine starship captain; where you can watch Starship Edsel online; and how the Edsel preceded the USS Cerritos as the worst ship in the fleet. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

A standup stalwart who stepped into the Tonight Show hosting gig when Johnny Carson retired, Jay Leno held that spot for 20 years. So when he finally retired, then unretired, then retired again (after some Succession-worthy intrigue) did Jay pick up the fishing pole? Nope! Instead he continued with frequent standup gigs, became a game-show host (You Bet Your Life), and launched a show about his friends and their cars (Jay Leno's Garage). As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Jay Leno? Late night television went to war after Johnny Carson retired with battles over his successor. In that scrap, Leno was often pitted against the prickly David Letterman who many felt should have succeeded Carson. That feud led to a memorable ad during the 2010 Super Bowl featuring Jay, Dave, and "mediator" Oprah Winfrey. https://youtu.be/-KSKkmypTZM?si=le0WGVwrG5Fd3FyE When Jay moved to Los Angeles and became part of the comedy scene there in the late 1970s it was only a matter of time before he scored the Holy Grail of guest spots -- a slot on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Here's that first appearance from 1977 (and dig the green leisure suit). https://youtu.be/qvmQZ1jQjQk?si=NkLFMQagKE2sN1Iu One of Jay Leno's signature bits on The Tonight Show was "Headlines" in which Jay would read real headlines from local papers -- always with some bizarre or inappropriate typos. It was a hit and spawned a number of book spinoffs. https://youtu.be/L-xm_zjXFMw?si=ePezelqI_O89TRts Jay Leno is a workhorse -- he doesn't seem comfortable unless he has several projects in the fire. After he retired from The Tonight Show, one of those irons involved his love of old cars (he has a huge collection). This episode of Jay Leno's Garage featured Martha Steward reminiscing about her old Edsel station wagon. https://youtu.be/KaGqElpspm0?si=G2tosPABBwNoLmGE

This week we sit down with the amaizing Kim Coletta! Kim bought her first bass from David Grubbs (Squirrelbait, Bastro, Gastr del Sol) when they both attended college in Washington, DC. After graduating, much to her father's chagrin, she started Jawbox with J. Robbins and Adam Wade. Shortly after, Coletta founded DeSoto Records to put out Edsel and early Jawbox material. Although Jawbox took a long hiatus starting in 1997, they reunited in 2018 and have since toured the U.S. and Europe. All told, the band has played around 700 live shows. Coletta works as a fifth-grade English teacher when she's not playing bass and coaches baseball. She is also a parent to Nick, a 21-year-old University of Vermont student who squeezes in some academics when not snowboarding. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
