What I Carry by Jennifer LongoMuiriel was named after the hospital she was abandoned at. To be precise, the John Muir Medical Center in California. And since she was a girl, well, they tried to keep it close. And when her social worker, Joellen, gave her a book about her namesake for her 8th birthday, it, in many ways changed the direction of her life. If she had any say in it, that was. Because John Muir was a famous naturalist, who spent most of his life outdoors and trying to protect the wilderness we have today - places like Yosemite. Still, to a little kid of 8, probably not the best gift, or so she thought at the time.Now Muir is about to embark on her last placement in foster care, because she is 17 and will be aged out of the system when she turns 18. And then she will truly be on her own. But her rules have been carefully in-place for herself for many years, and she believes she will survive this placement as well as she has the others. Don't make any friends or connections, don't cause trouble and always be ready to leave.Recommended for grades 8 and up.

Len Saputo, MD, a 1965 graduate of Duke University Medical School, is board certified in internal medicine and was in private practice in affiliation with John Muir Medical Center in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 30 years. From the start of this Corona virus we have been making bad policy based on bad data. At the very beginning the numbers have never added up. Many people have questioned this data and no answer given. Governors and local government followed the bad data and locked down their states, destroying jobs, people's financial conditions, businesses going out of business. They did not question the data, instead they just went forward through a power play and locked down their states. The damage done by this shut down is far greater then the virus itself. Doctors in Northern California say they have seen more deaths from suicide than they've seen from the coronavirus during the pandemic. "The numbers are unprecedented," Dr. Michael deBoisblanc of John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, California, told ABC7 News about the increase of deaths by suicide, adding that he's seen a "year's worth of suicides' in the last four weeks alone. In “Rushing to Save Heart Attack Patients,” meet Clayton resident Arlene Skuba, who survived a heart attack at 72, after doctors at the John Muir Medical Center in Concord rapidly unclogged her arteries. Just 30 years ago, doctors could only watch patients as they suffered their heart attacks. As many as 20 percent of them ended up dying. Now, by rushing patients to the operating table and opening their blocked arteries while their heart attacks are underway, they’re able to save all but 5 percent of those who make it to the hospital.
