Episode SummaryIn this episode, Georgie Kovacs, founder of Fempower Health, unpacks the recent FDA hearing on SSRI use during pregnancy—an emotionally charged and complex conversation that brought together OB-GYNs, psychiatrists, pharmacologists, and advocates.Drawing on over 25 years in healthcare consulting and six years interviewing global women's health leaders, Georgie offers a balanced, deeply informed analysis of the real conversation that took place—beyond the headlines and controversy. This wasn't just a debate about antidepressants in pregnancy. It was a wider reckoning with how we define mental health, how we treat it, and the pressures facing clinicians and patients in a fragmented system. From risk-benefit tradeoffs and informed consent to how “depression” is diagnosed and operationalized, this episode explores what was said, what was missing, and what we need next.Whether you're a woman seeking clarity or a clinician striving to provide the best care, this episode breaks it all down.Discussion Points What actually happened at the FDA panel on SSRIs and pregnancy? Are SSRIs overprescribed—or unfairly stigmatized—during pregnancy? Is "depression" too broad of a diagnosis? How do mental health diagnoses affect treatment decisions for pregnant women? Why is informed consent inconsistent in SSRI prescribing? What are the long-term risks of untreated maternal depression? Are OB-GYNs expected to manage too much—including mental health? How does limited access to psychiatrists shape treatment options? What does better mental healthcare look like during pregnancy?Should we rethink how we integrate psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle care?Expert Backgrounds MentionedOB-GYNs treating pregnant patients on SSRIsPsychiatrists both prescribing and deprescribing antidepressantsAcademic researchers investigating serotonin's effects on fetal developmentAdvocacy leaders spotlighting systemic barriers to mental health careResourcesFDA Hearing: https://www.fda.gov/patients/fda-expert-panels/fda-expert-panel-selective-serotonin-reuptake-inhibitors-ssris-and-pregnancy-07212025ACOG Response to FDA Hearing: https://www.acog.org/news/news-releases/2025/07/statement-on-benefit-of-access-to-ssris-during-pregnancySociety for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) Statement https://www.smfm.org/news/smfm-statement-on-ssris-and-pregnancyRegulatory Focus Responds: https://www.raps.org/news-and-articles/news-articles/2025/7/fda-panel-debates-label-change-on-ssri-use-duringSTAT News Responds: https://www.statnews.com/2025/07/25/ssri-drugs-fda-review-panel-antidepressants-pregnancy/National Curriculum in Reproductive Psychiatry (NCRP) Responds: https://ncrptraining.org/press-release-ncrp-responds-to-fda-panel-on-ssri-use-in-pregnancy/

As co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine (first edition 1985, fifth edition 2020), he established the scientific foundation for health promotion medicine. With over 100,000 copies sold in four languages, over half to MDs, it not only helped reestablish naturopathic medicine as an important part of the healthcare system but also provided the scientific foundation for the transformational fields of integrative and Functional Medicine throughout the world. The innovative artificial intelligence system he created has been used in corporate wellness by 20,000 employees and demonstrated a 50% reduction in the high-risk group by providing users highly personalized guidance for what they uniquely need to restore their health. He is now leading a multiphase research study to assess the efficacy of detoxification for the reversal of the diabetes epidemic. If successful, it will change the standard of care not just for diabetes, but for the many other chronic diseases where toxins are major contributors. A naturopathic physician (licensed in WA state since 1975), educator, researcher, and expert spokesman, he is editor-in-chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ, founding board member and currently chair of the board of IFM, founding board member of American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, and a member of the science boards of the Hecht Foundation, Gateway for Cancer Research, and Bioclinic Naturals. He was appointed by Presidents Clinton and Bush to two prestigious government commissions to advise the President and Congress on how to integrate natural medicine (by whatever name) into the healthcare system. He is author or co-author of six textbooks for doctors (most recently Clinical Environmental Medicine) and seven consumer books, including the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (with more than two million copies in six languages) and, most recently, The Toxin Solution. As an intellectual, political, and academic leader in medicine for over four decades, he has been widely honored, such as with the Linus Pauling Award by The Institute for Functional Medicine. Most recently, in 2019, he received the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition. We wanted to ensure that the conversations we would have with our guests went beyond our experience of the last three years. Some of the questions we ask this season are: Can we look at the role of architecture for providing care beyond the design of hospitals? What are the ways in which medical tourism defines entire cities? How do we shape our environment to foster healthy living – both physically and mentally? And how do we leave behind a digital legacy as designers, after death? Rochelle Waite has a different take on supporting women through the perimenopausal period. Instead of reaching first for "women's herbs", Rochelle instead goes back to grass roots Naturopathic principles. With Masters in Immunology, Reproductive Medicine and Women's Health Medicine she is perfectly placed to make practical recommendations to maintain her patients' enjoyment of life as they transition through perimenopause. Her reasoning? If cells aren't properly nourished then organs can't function efficiently, and if they don't work then herbs which ostensibly work on those organs could be thwarted.Working with basic nutrition and digestive enhancement, Rochelle brings about rejuvenation from the ground up to avoid unnecessary supplementation and hence improved compliance from her common sense approach.URL: https://rochellewaitenaturopath.com/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/rochellewaitenaturopath/References: Kanat M, Sipahioglu M, Arinc H, et al. I've been thinking lately about how I can become healthier, improve my well-being, and be more self-sufficient and holistic in regard to what I'm putting into my body. This train of thought led me back to how this all got started: when I began making my own toothpaste. Those of you who know me from Love is Blind know that I've been making my own toothpaste for years. It began by falling down a rabbit hole of exploring and researching the ingredients in products we use every day. I was shocked to discover the number of dangerous chemicals that are in toothpaste despite FDA approval, chemicals that can cause cancer, cognitive issues, hormonal imbalance, and many more side effects that we may not even realize are happening.   There weren't many organic toothpaste brands at the time, so I began making my own. For eight years, I've been creating and using homemade toothpastes, soaps, condiments, recipes, and much more in an effort to live a healthier life. The benefits have been obvious, as I started feeling and looking better within weeks of beginning this journey.   This brings us to today's guest, Leslie Guevara. Leslie reached out to me the night that my toothpaste scene aired on Love is Blind. She asked me if I'd be interested in trying her natural, organic toothpaste. After doing some research, I discovered she runs a small business called Tru-Eden and that her product is actually FDA-approved.   I was very skeptical at first, because even most “natural” toothpastes often have at least one negative ingredient in them. However, Leslie's focus on oral health and how it continues to contribute to overall immunity and health convinced me. She sent me a sample of Tru-Eden toothpaste to try, and I was blown away. I wasn't just impressed with the toothpaste, but also her story, what led her to make her own toothpaste, how she discovered these ingredients, and why she turned it into a business.   Leslie's authenticity and patience with me led us to form a lasting friendship. I can't wait to share my conversation with Leslie with you today.    You can find Leslie and Tru-Eden Toothpaste here:   Website: https://www.tru-eden.com/    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/truedentoothpaste/    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/truedentoothpaste     Find Nick Thompson here:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nthompson513/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXipWcR8Pit6vYHd1ZcKgKg

Overnight the video went viral and was probably the first video of a doctor challenging the status quo to be aired on mainstream media in the UK. Dr James was said by many to have spoken up on behalf of the 100,000 healthcare workers that were due to lose their job and quickly gathered a large social media following.
