Dr. Joseph Pizzorno is a transformational leader in medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine,” which set the foundation for Bastyr to become the first accredited institution in this field anywhere in the world and validated that medicine that promotes health rather than just treats disease could be credibly taught, researched, and practiced. As co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine (first edition 1985, fifth edition 2020), he established the scientific foundation for health promotion medicine. With over 100,000 copies sold in four languages, over half to MDs, it not only helped reestablish naturopathic medicine as an important part of the healthcare system but also provided the scientific foundation for the transformational fields of integrative and Functional Medicine throughout the world. The innovative artificial intelligence system he created has been used in corporate wellness by 20,000 employees and demonstrated a 50% reduction in the high-risk group by providing users highly personalized guidance for what they uniquely need to restore their health. He is now leading a multiphase research study to assess the efficacy of detoxification for the reversal of the diabetes epidemic. If successful, it will change the standard of care not just for diabetes, but for the many other chronic diseases where toxins are major contributors. A naturopathic physician (licensed in WA state since 1975), educator, researcher, and expert spokesman, he is editor-in-chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ, founding board member and currently chair of the board of IFM, founding board member of American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, and a member of the science boards of the Hecht Foundation, Gateway for Cancer Research, and Bioclinic Naturals. He was appointed by Presidents Clinton and Bush to two prestigious government commissions to advise the President and Congress on how to integrate natural medicine (by whatever name) into the healthcare system. He is author or co-author of six textbooks for doctors (most recently Clinical Environmental Medicine) and seven consumer books, including the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (with more than two million copies in six languages) and, most recently, The Toxin Solution. As an intellectual, political, and academic leader in medicine for over four decades, he has been widely honored, such as with the Linus Pauling Award by The Institute for Functional Medicine. Most recently, in 2019, he received the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition. In 2018, he received the Leadership Award from the Integrative Healthcare Symposium and the Visionary Award from the Academy of Integrative and Health Medicine.

Rochelle Waite has a different take on supporting women through the perimenopausal period. Instead of reaching first for "women's herbs", Rochelle instead goes back to grass roots Naturopathic principles. With Masters in Immunology, Reproductive Medicine and Women's Health Medicine she is perfectly placed to make practical recommendations to maintain her patients' enjoyment of life as they transition through perimenopause. Her reasoning? I've been thinking lately about how I can become healthier, improve my well-being, and be more self-sufficient and holistic in regard to what I'm putting into my body. This train of thought led me back to how this all got started: when I began making my own toothpaste. Those of you who know me from Love is Blind know that I've been making my own toothpaste for years. It began by falling down a rabbit hole of exploring and researching the ingredients in products we use every day. I was shocked to discover the number of dangerous chemicals that are in toothpaste despite FDA approval, chemicals that can cause cancer, cognitive issues, hormonal imbalance, and many more side effects that we may not even realize are happening.   There weren't many organic toothpaste brands at the time, so I began making my own. For eight years, I've been creating and using homemade toothpastes, soaps, condiments, recipes, and much more in an effort to live a healthier life. The benefits have been obvious, as I started feeling and looking better within weeks of beginning this journey.   This brings us to today's guest, Leslie Guevara. Leslie reached out to me the night that my toothpaste scene aired on Love is Blind. She asked me if I'd be interested in trying her natural, organic toothpaste. After doing some research, I discovered she runs a small business called Tru-Eden and that her product is actually FDA-approved.   I was very skeptical at first, because even most “natural” toothpastes often have at least one negative ingredient in them. However, Leslie's focus on oral health and how it continues to contribute to overall immunity and health convinced me. She sent me a sample of Tru-Eden toothpaste to try, and I was blown away. I wasn't just impressed with the toothpaste, but also her story, what led her to make her own toothpaste, how she discovered these ingredients, and why she turned it into a business.   Leslie's authenticity and patience with me led us to form a lasting friendship. I can't wait to share my conversation with Leslie with you today.    You can find Leslie and Tru-Eden Toothpaste here:   Website: https://www.tru-eden.com/    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/truedentoothpaste/    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/truedentoothpaste     Find Nick Thompson here:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nthompson513/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXipWcR8Pit6vYHd1ZcKgKg

Dr. Steve James is a consultant in Critical Care Medicine and Exercise Testing at King's College Hospital in London, UK. During a visit by the Health Minister Sajid Javid to the COVID critical care unit where he was the Consultant in Charge in early January 2022 he challenged the minister on the requirement for mandatory vaccination saying that the "science wasn't good enough". Overnight the video went viral and was probably the first video of a doctor challenging the status quo to be aired on mainstream media in the UK. Dr James was said by many to have spoken up on behalf of the 100,000 healthcare workers that were due to lose their job and quickly gathered a large social media following. He carried on delivering his message through numerous television, radio, magazine and social media outlets and joined others in a campaign against mandates which the government have now revoked. He continues to speak out on civil liberties issues and on the message he has been working with in his Exercise Intolerance Clinic, that with the right changes in nutrition, movement, circadian rhythm and nervous system inputs, chronic disease ca be reversed, what he calls "Health Medicine." I am just a resource, a well read girl with a story. If you need help beyond this podcast, please contact a certified professional.I recently heard a great quote about patience in a newsletter I receive every week from Farnam Street. It says:“Patience is not passive, on the contrary, it is concentrated strength.” ― Bruce Lee"People wait in different ways. Some are passive. Others are active. These two approaches are as different as the results they yield.Passive patience is waiting for the world to give you the thing you want. A lot of people live their life with passive patience. Rather than go after the promotion at work they expect it to fall in their lap. Rather than go after the love of their life, they sit back and expect to be courted. Rather than chase their dreams, they wait for just the right opening that always seems around the corner but never comes. These people have the wrong kind of patience.Active patience is different. Active patience demands action and intention, even while waiting for results. Active patience means not only applying for the promotion but taking your time to build the skills you need to put yourself in the best position to succeed. Active patience means starting the business, writing the book, going after the love of your life.Active patience puts you in the best position to get what you want. There is almost always an action you can take to improve the odds.Active in the moment but patient with the results.Active patience."In many ways, my relationship with my therapist is the medicine. She has taught me how to have a personal connection that has strong boundaries, feels safe, involves respect, care, understanding, maturity, and has the power to grow which maintaining its foundation. I am keenly aware of the cost of therapy and I do my best to prepare deeply for every session. However, oftentimes, as soon as I end up sitting in front of her, I am flooded with all of the things I might otherwise neglect in my usual conversations. Still in those instances she knows how to reel me in, distill, and focus so that I leave our time together feeling at ease and well equipped to move through pressing issues. Though I leave the room, I find that, in many ways, she remains with me. I am able to directly apply her lessons, reconfigure thought patterns in my mind, and find healthy ways to feel better.Oftentimes, we concern ourselves with the minute details. Like, we have to get up at 5am on the dot or else. I think rituals become more fluid, more possible, when they are less strict. Maybe it's just earlier. Maybe it's a timeframe. Or maybe it's altering another aspect in your life to incentivize an earlier day. For me, building little routines in my life that have positive effect is one of the most effective ways I create rituals that support me.A while back I learned a really great lesson. I must, no matter what, carve out time in the morning just for myself. Once I get going, even if I solo-task, I really get going. Other things. Other people. They will undoubtedly come first. Which makes me less happy, less fulfilled, less of my best self. So, I have 2 hours carved out in my calendar, everyday, from 6-8am that are labeled: “I am focused on me.” It is a non-negotiable time frame that I've set aside for me to sleep, do nothing, walk, read, drink coffee, lift weights, talk to a friend, literally whatever. It doesn't matter so long as it is not work related, so long as it is purely a form of therapy. Let this serve as your reminder: take care of you first.Resources: Remedy Place, Psychology Today See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Have you ever heard of MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction)? My guest today is going to tell us all about it, as well as research into why a mindfulness practice could be beneficial for those with chronic skin issues (such as eczema, psoriasis, and alopecia areata). Jessica completed her BSc at York University in Toronto, ON and has completed her Doctor of Naturopathy degree from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Her passion for integrative medicine and research led her to a postdoc position at UC Davis' Department of Dermatology and now more recently, to work with Integrative Skin Science and Research. Her research interests include nutrition, the microbiome, mindfulness, and quality of life in various dermatological conditions. Join us as we discuss research surrounding the benefits of mindfulness for chronic skin rashes. Do you have a regular stress reduction and mindfulness practice? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: Can our state of mind affect our skin? What do the terms "itch intensity" and "itch catastrophizing" mean? Can a mindfulness practice help people with alopecia areata? What is MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction)? Quotes “You can think of mindfulness as the practice of paying attention on purpose to the present moment without judgment.” [5:40] “Itch catastrophization could be thoughts along the lines of this itch is only going to continue to get worse and worse and it's never going to go away. And so seeing maybe the extremes of the negatives and the anticipation of it becoming gradually worse. And itch intensity is more so about the physical sensation of it really increasing and how you feel the itch.” [7:51] Links Follow Jessica on Instagram Articles highlighted in this episode: Alopecia - Gallo R, Chiorri C, Gasparini G, Signori A, Burroni A, Parodi A. If you've watch television or listened to the radio lately, you've probably been bombarded with direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising. Join us as we revisit our forum from October 2018 on the interplay between medicine and advertising, capitalism and consumerism. ------- Why do we refer to patients as "consumers" in the United States? Is today's opioid crisis the result of medical consumerism run amok--of pills hawked like soap to gullible shoppers? Is picking a doctor really like choosing a new car? In this talk, historians Nancy Tomes and David Herzberg discuss when and why patients started to be called "consumers," and examine the positive and negative aspects of twentieth-century medical "consumerism." We explore a century of efforts to deliver pharmaceutical relief through properly calibrated markets, and evaluate the risks (and often-misunderstood benefits) of governing addictive drugs as consumer goods. If you have yet to listen to my first conversation with Dawn please do. Back in episode 64 I Dawn and I delve into the world of breast milk and the breast milk microbiome. It’s a goodie and one that I’ve listened to a few times already. Judging by the downloads, you guys found this one valuable too.  Let me refresh your memory on who Dawn is; Dawn Whitten is a Naturopath, Western Herbalist, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Researcher and Educator. She is part of the research team at Probitic.Advisor.com and a clinical director at Goulds Natural Medicine in Hobart. In this episode Dawn shares a little about herself - what gets her up in the morning When to begin introducing solid food to our babies What signs to look out for that show baby is ready for solids Why it's wise to continue breastfeeding once solid food commences Why many babies get constipated when they start solids How parents can prevent constipation in their babies Why we might want to avoid whole cow’s milk in first 12 months The risks of consuming solid foods too early The best way to introduce potential food allergens to baby Baby food labelling And on and on we go It's a great conversation as it always is with Dawn.
