For the past year, we've spent a lot of time talking about economic uncertainty, gun violence, war, divisive politics, suffering and fear.Times are tough — so, MPR News host Angela Davis decided to go out and find some joy. She recently visited neighborhoods and asked people to tell her “something good.” She first posed this simple question to people on the street in the fall of 2020 when the COVID-19 virus was spreading chaos and fear.Listen to what people told her this time around about what's bringing them joy during stressful times — and we'll talk with a therapist about why that matters.
Hello Fam, Due to some changes in policies in streaming platforms like Spotify, we would be changing our Sleep Music only content to Guided Meditation + Sleep Music to help you sleep better. As uploading Music Only Tracks would make the Spotify remove our Podcast, so that's the reason for changing To Guided Meditation Tracks. We will also be coming soon with our own Android/iOS app to serve you better. Hope you understand and continue to support us. What can we do to deal with this funding crisis in academic health and get through it with balance, equanimity and resilience? Mindfulness-based stress reduction and other mental health aspects that can help deal with the funding challenges in academic health are explored in this week's edition of the Faculty Factory Podcast with our guest Neda Gould, PhD. "It's tapping into our creativity and also recognizing that we will also get through this. It's just how can we get through it with some balance and equanimity and resilience?" Dr. Gould said. In this funding climate, with job security concerns top of mind, there are resources along the lines of support groups and other available tools to explore because we all have to keep fortifying forward. No one has all the answers, but Dr. Gould takes us through many small changes we can work on to continue to enjoy life despite these external stressors. Dr. Gould is Director of the Mindfulness Program and Associate Director of the Bayview Anxiety Disorders Clinic, both in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. About The Johns Hopkins Mindfulness Program: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/psychiatry/specialty-areas/mindfulness In March 2020, Dr. Gould joined the Faculty Factory Podcast (remotely, of course) and delivered two very memorable episodes to help our community cope with the emerging anxiety of the time, for which we are forever grateful. There are seasons in life when everything feels light, expansive, and flowing. And then there are seasons where things feel uncertain, heavy, or overwhelming.Sometimes the stress is coming from our personal lives - relationships shifting, big decisions, unexpected challenges, or moments where life simply feels like too much to hold. And sometimes it's the collective energy around us. The pace of the world, the intensity of global events, the uncertainty many people are feeling about the future. Even if it's not directly impacting your day-to-day life, it can still live in the background of our nervous systems. In this episode, Kate explores how to navigate stressful times without losing your center.Because while stress is an inevitable part of being human, many of us were never taught how to move through it in a way that keeps us connected to ourselves.Instead, we often react from fear, rush to fix things, or try to escape the discomfort altogether. But what if stressful seasons aren't something to resist… but something to move through with deeper presence and self- responsibility? What if you could become rooted in yourself, no matter how much chaos was happening around you? This episode is an invitation to slow down, reconnect with your inner compass, and learn how to stay grounded even when life feels uncertain or intense. In this episode, Kate explores:Why stressful seasons are a natural part of the human experienceHow personal challenges and collective energy can impact our nervous systemThe difference between reacting from fear and responding from self-trustHow to take responsibility for your own frequencyHow to stay connected to your inner guidance when life feels overwhelmingSimple ways to regulate your nervous system during stressful periodsWhy some of life's most challenging seasons become powerful turning pointsRather than seeing stressful times as something that's gone wrong, this conversation reframes them as moments that invite us into deeper resilience, wisdom, and trust in ourselves.Because when you learn how to stay anchored within yourself - even when life feels uncertain, it's always an opportunity to grow.About the Host:Kate Harlow is the founder of The Unscriptd Woman, the creator of The Expanded Love Coaching Method, and host of The New Truth podcast - ranked in the top 1.5% globally. It's not easy to know what to say, how to engage with our daily lives, or really what's going to happen. And while that can feel destabilizing (obvs), it can also be a really good time to consider our own personal resilience -- to honor that, listen within, and build towards greater capacity. This is not the same for every person. So how can you explore this for yourself? And what practices and herbs could be supportive to help you build capacity in stressful times? That's what I explore in this week's episode.Tune in to hear about how stress can mess with your hormones, one way to map your current stress response landscape (inspired by Deb Dana), and some practices and herbs that might be able to support you to prevent burnout and instead build your reserves and capacity for a longer term resilience.Honestly, herbs and practices like this don't change the systems, structures, relationships, etc that are underlying and causing chronic issues. But these practices CAN help you listen to your own body and build foundations of personalized wellbeing amidst these topsy turvy times.Resources: Track Your Cycle Free GuideWaitlist for Natural Contraception the Herbal WayToday's shownotes: Foundations for building capacityEpisode 17: How stress messes with your hormonesEpisode 68: Herbal spotlight on Milky OatsEpisode 171: Somatic Experiencing for healing trauma w Emma SchurinkBook: Anchored by Deb DanaIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdomAnd if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! Life can feel overwhelming and messy—whether it’s a cluttered desk, chaotic schedules, or the heavy emotional and spiritual burdens we carry. As our daily prayer and devotional remind us, some mess is self-made through poor choices or sin; other times, it comes from circumstances beyond our control or from lies we’ve believed about ourselves and God. Psalm 40 reminds us of a simple but powerful truth: no matter how “together” we appear, we are always in need of God’s help. The psalmist doesn’t hold back in his cry—he names his need and calls on the Lord to deliver. In the same way, when life feels messy, we are invited to bring our chaos, questions, and burdens honestly before God in prayer. The good news is that God doesn’t turn away from our mess. He invites us to cast our cares on Him (Psalm 55:22) and promises to carry our burdens. When we surrender our cluttered hearts to Him, He replaces our chaos with peace, guiding us step by step in His love. Your Daily Bible Reading: "As for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay." – Psalm 40:17 Key Takeaways Everyone experiences messy seasons in life—spiritually, emotionally, and practically. Psalm 40 reminds us to acknowledge our need and cry out to God honestly. God invites us to cast our burdens on Him, promising to carry and deliver us. Prayer is the path from chaos to peace; God meets us right where we are. Let’s Pray Together Gracious Lord Jesus, thank You that I can bring the mess of my life honestly before You. You know my needs more deeply than I do, and You are my help and deliverer. Calm my anxious heart, guide me through the questions I face, and give me Your peace in place of my chaos. I trust that I never walk alone, for You are with me always. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Calls to Action Write down the “messy moments” you’re facing right now and bring them to God in prayer. Memorize Psalm 55:22: “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you.” Share this devotional with someone who may be walking through a chaotic or heavy season. Stress has a way of sneaking into every part of our lives—our thoughts, our bodies, even our sleep. If you’ve ever faced anxiety so heavy it led to nightmares or physical strain, you’re not alone. Today’s reflection from Vivian Bricker reminds us that even in overwhelming seasons, God offers consolation and joy, just as Psalm 94:19 declares: “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” Sometimes the bravest, most faith-filled choice we can make is to step away from the people, places, or situations fueling our stress and instead turn toward God’s presence. His peace is not earned—it’s a gift. And in Him, we find strength to set boundaries, rest in His promises, and release the pressure we were never meant to carry alone. Main Takeaways Stress can manifest physically and emotionally, but God invites us to bring it all to Him. Boundaries are not selfish; they are often necessary for health and healing. Psalm 94:19 reminds us that God’s consolation brings joy even in the heaviest seasons. Choosing to step away from harmful stressors creates space for God’s peace to guard our hearts. Bible Verse References Psalm 94:19 – “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. 1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
