We're a little off-topic here, but it's for a good cause. Instead of the usual black tie event to raise money to fight cancer, founders of the H Foundation decided to create an uplifting event with The Goombay Bash. So grab your Hawaiian shirt and get yourself to the Navy Pier in Chicago on July 27th and help fight cancer (https://www.goombaybash.com/). While you're there, order yourself a Goombay Smash, just like the one Michael is drinking in this episode. Mike Switzer interviews Courtney Scipio, president of IBA Event Rentals in Charleston, S.C., and SBA's 2024 Minority Small Businessperson of the Year
When you walk into just about any interior space in the US – from the biggest office building to the smallest apartment – you're almost certain to find art hanging on the walls. And not just one piece. From your doctor's waiting room to your sister's bedroom, you'll typically find multiple works of art. Sure, they're not all paintings, some of them are posters or prints, but at some point, each one had to be created by an artist. Only around 1% of the US workforce are artists. So, with limited availability and high demand you'd expect artists to be highly paid. Most of them, though, are not. The reason might be something to do with the business model by which visual artists get paid. In the film business, actors, directors, and writers pay agents a commission of 10% of their income. Musicians pay booking agents 10% of their income. Directors of commercials pay their business representatives 18% commission. If you're a visual artist, you'll pay your business representative – typically a gallery owner – a commission of 50% of the sale price of your artwork. How does an artist survive in this kind of financial setup? That's what we're asking Anastasia Pelias. Anastasia is a New Orleans born-and-raised visual artist whose paintings and sculptures are in museums and in private and public collections across the country and around the world. In New Orleans you can see Anastasia's paintings in the permanent collections of The New Orleans Museum of Art, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art and The Newcomb Art Museum. You can see her sculptures in St. John Park in Lake Terrace, and on Poydras Street as part of the Helis Foundation's Poydras Corridor Sculpture Exhibition. In case you're thinking all 50% commission art gallery owners must be hard-hearted blood-sucking mercenaries, meet Marguerite Oestreicher. Marguerite owned an art gallery in the heart of New Orleans' art district on Julia Street, until Hurricane Katrina closed it down. In part, Marguerite credits the skills she picked up running her art gallery with her ability to perform her current job as Executive Director of New Orleans Area Habitat For Humanity. NOAHH, as it's commonly known, has 65 full-time employees and builds around 25 homes a year. Their stated mission is, “To responsibly build communities where families can thrive in homes they can afford.” For whatever reason – maybe because it helps bring order to a chaotic world - human beings like to divide by 2. We like to put things in one category, or another. Republican or Democrat. Employed or unemployed. Artist or Businessperson. Renter or Homeowner. Marguerite's mission at Habitat For Humanity is defined by categories: moving people from one to another. From renter to homeowner. To survive as an artist, like Anastasia, you have to defy the categories of art versus business – you need to keep one foot in each world. Across all these categories, the one thing most of us have in common is, we like to live in an affordable home where we can hang our art on the walls. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. In this episode, join Jared Sorensen and Will Harris as they navigate the journey of building a successful regenerative agriculture business.Whether you're a seasoned farmer, aspiring entrepreneur, or simply passionate about creating a more sustainable future, this episode is packed with valuable insights and inspiration to guide you on your journey.ABOUT THE GUEST: Will Harris is a fourth-generation cattleman, who tends the same land that his great-grandfather settled in 1866. Born and raised at White Oak Pastures, Will left home to attend the University of Georgia's School of Agriculture, where he was trained in the industrial farming methods that had taken hold after World War II. Will graduated in 1976 and returned to Bluffton where he and his father continued to raise cattle using pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and antibiotics. They also fed their herd a high-carbohydrate diet of corn and soy. These tools did a fantastic job of taking the cost out of the system, but in the mid-1990s Will became disenchanted with the excesses of these industrialized methods. They had created a monoculture for their cattle, and, as Will says, "nature abhors a monoculture." In 1995, Will made the audacious decision to return to the farming methods his great-grandfather had used 130 years before.Since Will has successfully implemented these changes, he has been recognized all over the world as a leader in humane animal husbandry and environmental sustainability. Will is the immediate past President of the Board of Directors of Georgia Organics. He is the Beef Director of the American Grassfed Association and was selected 2011 Business Person of the year for Georgia by the Small Business Administration.Be sure to check out our previous episodes and click on the link to join our Webinar series: https://www.agsteward.fyi/registration-page--1 or visit our YouTube channel.
[SEGMENT 2-1] Super Bowl Shooter I saw where somebody shot up the Super Bowl parade. Have they found the Trump supporter, yet? You know he's a Trump supporter, because HE HAD A GUN! I do have a few more questions. For example, is the Super Bowl parade shooter kin to the two Trump-supporter Rednecks who beat up Jussie Smollett and bleached him, then put the noose around his neck. Before he shot, did he yell to the KS fans, “Y'all look like that colored fella on Empire!” then all hell broke loose. Or maybe the Super Bowl Parade shooter is one of the Trump supporters who put that noose in Bubba Wallace's garage? As a warning to black Nascar drivers who NEVER WIN. “Keep losing black man, or else!” Surely this shooter can be linked to a Confederate Flag, Q-anon, or Alex Jones? Maybe we will learn that he shot up a black church somewhere. ANYWHERE! Better yet, the Super Bowl Parade Shooter burned down black churches in the last century. As Democrats watch in horror. And he wore a Trump MAGA shirt. Rumor is the Super Bowl Parade shooter is the person who dropped the coke at the White House and tried to blame it on Hunter Biden. Reports are that this shooter could also be the SCOTUS leaker and resembles the Tea Party racist. I even heard he is the person who really slapped Chris Rock and not Will Smith. Why are we even looking for this shooter or arresting people who fit the description and had the firearm, when Trump might become president for a second term. For all we know, Trump is the REAL shooter!! [SEGMENT 2-2] Super Bowl shooter and Fani Willis [X] SB – Ann Coulter on the Super Bowl shooter [SEGMENT 2-3] Whistleblower arrested 1 Just in time to move the BINDER out of the news cycle. You've heard of the binder right? The binder that PROVES the CIA helped orchestrate part of the coup of President Trump. [X] SB – Kash Patel on the binder The binder exonerates Trump Email from NARA The person investigating Hunter Biden just charged the FBI whistleblower who exposed Biden Family corruption in Ukraine. Coincidence? Hunter Biden has yet to be indicted, although his list of crimes and potential crimes is longer than a Polish last name. Human trafficking, drugs use, money-laundering, FARA violations, and possession of a firearm by a felon only begin to form the list of Hunter Biden's crimes. So in typical Biden administration Gestapo tactics, they arrest the good guy. We hear phrases like "weaponizing the justice system" against adversaries, and this epitomizes that scenario. Joe Biden has yet again arranged for his henchmen to target a Biden accuser. Peaceful January 6 protesters are rotting in prison over a Democrat-contrived farce that they use in an attempt to keep Trump from serving his rightful second term. And to hedge their bets, the Biden administration works with Democrats and RINOs in Congress and state attorneys generals, and large city DAs to beat Trump into submission. Clearly, EVERY case against Trump is an orchestrated move to thwart the 2024 Presidential Election, as Democrats know they won't beat Trump with Dominion machines this time. [X] SB – Biden explains Ukraine's role in the MIC [SEGMENT 2-4] Whistleblower arrested 2 So we get General Mike Flynn version 2.0. The Hill reports, The confidential source at the center of allegations being promoted by House Republicans that President Biden accepted a bribe has been arrested and charged with making false statements to the FBI. The allegations risk unwinding the House GOP probe into President Biden. In making their case, GOP lawmakers have frequently pointed to conversations the confidential source, Alexander Smirnov, had with the FBI relaying that the head of Ukrainian energy company Burisma told him he had paid both President Biden and his son Hunter Biden $5 million. The indictment alleges Smirnov made up the allegations given his opposition to President Biden's candidacy. “As alleged in the indictment, the events that Smirnov first reported to the FBI Agent in June 2020 were fabrications,” the Justice Department wrote in a press release announcing the grand jury indictment. “The indictment alleges that the defendant transformed his routine and unextraordinary business contacts with Burisma in 2017 and later into bribery allegations against Public Official 1 after expressing bias against Public Official 1 and his presidential candidacy,” they added, referring to President Biden. Interesting timing, given all the press around Joe Biden's age and senility. If you can't fight back on the facts, give America a distraction, albeit fake news. Does anybody think Smirnov would return the U.S. if he thought he would get arrested? The article continues, Smirnov was arrested on Valentine's Day at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas as he was arriving to the U.S. from overseas, and was charged with making a false statement and creating a false and fictitious record The charges were brought by special counsel David Weiss, a Trump appointee who has brought tax changes against Hunter Biden, who once served on Burisma's board. Republicans have frequently pointed to Smirnov's role as a confidential human informant to the FBI. His conversations were memorialized in an FD-1023 that relayed what he heard from Mykola Zlochevsky, the Burisma official. The FBI was never able to corroborate the information, but the tip has become central to the House GOP's impeachment probe, which has sought to connect the allegations to then Vice President Biden's efforts to oust a Ukrainian prosecutor accused by the international community of failing to address corruption. The FBI can't catch bombers, even when they mail the agency manifestos. But they nabbed Smirnov before the ink dried on his testimony. Without a doubt, this is the Biden administration using the FBI as its attack dog to smear Smirnov. The evidence against Joe Biden and his family overwhelms even the most disinterested observer, yet the Left pretend none exist. The gall of these people to lie shameless in our faces is astounding. What next? Will we be told that the wire transfers of millions of dollars didn't happen? Or perhaps the 170 or so Suspicious Activity Reports are fraudulent too? Will they deny the recordings of the Bidens and Hunter's own utterances. I feel like I did after hear Blasey-Ford drone on an on about her hippocampus in describing her "rape" 40 years early by Kavanaugh. Enough already...Skank. Smirnov has done nothing wrong except to be on the wrong side of the Left's lie. The DOJ stated, referring to Joe and Hunter Biden: “Despite repeated admonishments that he must provide truthful information to the FBI and that he must not fabricate evidence, Smirnov provided false derogatory information to the FBI about Public Official 1, and Businessperson 1, the son of Public Official 1, in 2020, after Public Official 1 became a presidential candidate.” Understand this Smirnov provided information to the FBI knowing the consequences of lying. He wasn't under investigation; had no skin in the game. He simply wanted to do the right thing. What a message to Americans: tell the truth and get arrested. And we wonder how Weinstein could molest women for decades? Or the feigned outrage of Leftists over the exposure of Epstein? These predators operated with immunity for decades, and with full knowledge of powerful people who decide winners and losers. Somewhere along the way powerful Leftists declared them losers. But that's the only way they were taken down. Joe Biden used a $1 billion loan guarantee to get the monkey of the back of his family's illegal business. Yes America, it's really that simple. What we now witness is how far Leftists will go to lie and protect the liar. If Republicans continue to fight fair, this game is over. You can't win a fixed game, save Trump. Speaking of Trump, in case you wonder why he rises in the polls with every persecution, I give you Smirnov. Americans know the end-game when the see it. If they defeat Trump and Biden get off, we truly have no country. How do you go from being a "credible source" to arrested? Speak the truth to an administration of liars. The Biden administration and those who control them will push the American people too far. That won't end well for them and it won't be good for the country. The 2024 Presidential Election is "all in" for the good guys. But understand that the bad guys will do everything they can to stop Trump from winning. And I do mean everything. For the record, Joe Biden remains old and senile. No amount of distractions will change that.

Davis Smith is the Founder and Chairman of Cotopaxi, an outdoor brand with a humanitarian mission. The company has assisted over 4 million people living in poverty. The company has been profitable for the last 4 years and is expected to do $160M in revenue in 2023, up from $55M just two years before. In April 2023, Davis resigned after 10 years as CEO to lead a mission for his church in Brazil for three years. Davis is an EY Entrepreneur of the Year and was recognized as Utah's Businessperson of the Year in 2022. He is an adventurer who has floated the Amazon on a self-made raft, kayaked from Cuba to Florida, and explored North Korea. In Today's Episode with Davis Smith We Discuss: 1. From Selling $6M Worth of Pool Tables to the Amazon of Brazil to Founding Cotopaxi: How did Davis scale a pool table business to $6M in revenue? What were Davis' biggest takeaways from building the Amazon of Brazil, raising millions in VC funding and the business failing? How did depression and 36 hours on a sofa lead to the a-ha moment for Cotopaxi? 2. The Billion Dollar Company, Rejected by 100 Investors: How was the early fundraising journey for Davis with Cotopaxi? Why did so many investors say no? What was the best VC meeting he has ever had? Why do women understand Cotopaxi better? What does Davis believe are the biggest misalignments between VCs and Founders? Why does Davis believe we need a new type of financial product to fund long term projects? What are the biggest elements of fundraising that Davis believes founders do not understand? 3. Scaling Cotopaxi to $150M in Revenue: What are Davis' biggest lessons on what works and what does not from scaling Cotopaxi to $150M in revenue? Why did Davis not lay anyone off but decide everyone should take a pay cut instead? How did that go down? Why does letting people leave work earlier lead to better talent wanting to join your company? Why does Davis believe that you absolutely can build a huge business with balance in your life? 4. Life, Parenting, Marriage: Why does Davis believe that so many entrepreneurs chase the wrong thing? What do they chase? What should they be chasing instead? How does Davis analyze his relationship to money today? Does it make you happy? What does great parenting mean to Davis? How has that changed over time? How does marriage change when comparing pre-kids and post-kids? Was Davis nervous about becoming a father for the first time at the age of 24?
This is the last business update on my new solo cleaning business for 2019. What a way to go out! Andrea Szlavik of A2Z Realtor Pa assures Ken that he is not a cleaner who happens to do business. He is a business person that happens to clean. This is a big difference. Let's dive into this week in my business! We had a business showcase presentation from Laney Landis this week at MCBA. She is the 5th generation owner (over 200 years in the family) of Old Village Paint. I was mesmerized at the history of this American Pre-Civil War paint company. I happened to record this meeting as I wanted to learn each member's business better. This was very fortuitous as Laney was sad she didn't have a recording of her showcase on her family company. Afterward, I told her of my bootleg recording and sold it on the black market for a can of paint. Just kidding. I sent it to her after the meeting and she was so pleased and thankful. As I've shared many times, always look to sow good seeds.I also connected with a few other members after this meeting. James wanted to set up a 1-to-1 breakfast meeting to get to know each other's stories better. Charley wanted me to start sending me cleaning referrals. Paul wanted to connect. I am becoming a trusted face & member and others recognize that and want to get to know me better to refer me. I met Andrea Szlavic on NextDoor last week and she added me to her realtor preferred vendor list. I was very thankful and asked if she would like to grab a coffee and connect. She opted for breakfast at a brand new local spot called Sammy's Bullfrog Cafe in Harleysville, It was a productive meeting where we shared our business stories with each other while enjoying the new flavor in town. We discovered a common connection as well. I had attended the Growth Now Movement LIVE! Conference in Reading, PA with Justin Schenck. While at this conference, I met another Keller Williams realtor at the same office as Andrea. It's a small world, after all. At the end of the meeting, I asked her this question. "Why did you add me to your preferred vendor list without meeting me or seeing my work quality first?" Her answer floored me and became the title to this episode. "Because you set yourself apart by reaching out to me first on NextDoor. That told me that you were a business person that did cleaning verses a cleaning person that tried to do business. Most cleaners don't take that initiative."As we parted, she assured me that she would get me out to her team's office in the spring for a real estate cleaning presentation. Then instead of getting in my car, I went back into the cafe and asked to speak to the owner. They were hesitant as they assumed I wanted to complain. Then I told them that I enjoyed the experience and would like to leave the cafe a 5-star review on Google. The hostess introduced me to my breakfast waitress, who was also part owner in the brand new cafe! She was very grateful and told me where to leave these reviews and asked for my cleaning business card. I left one on the cafe's bulletin board and went home. Once I got home, I followed up by giving 5-star reviews on Google, NextDoor, and Facebook for Andrea and the Bullfrog Cafe. Andrea and Kayla (my breakfast waitress) were so thankful. Again, these are good seeds! Read the rest of this episode at the Smart Cleaning School website

Authenticity, what a can of worms. A beautiful gift of self acceptance, an appreciation of the wreck that you are and something that we for some reason forgo in the face of formality. Since working for a startup accelerator I've been privy to an entrepreneurial mindset of needing to build at the sake of authenticity. Be what you think an employer or partner wants you to be, hide your personality for the sake of your venture, "I aM a BuSInESS pErSoN." The examples go on and on and what I find so funny is that the advice from some of the most successful people I know contradicts the need to hide your authentic self. Building through authenticity is a way to avoid burnout, incorporate more fun into your day-to-day, and avoid creating something that doesn't serve your purpose. Our guest today is a fantastic example of this.
