In this episode of the Disruptive Successor Show, Jonathan Goldhill interviews John Nieuwenburg, an experienced business coach who shares insights gained from over 20 years of coaching small business owners. John delves into his journey from being the president of BC Liquor Stores to becoming a business coach, emphasizing the need for entrepreneurs to gain clarity and control over their businesses. The conversation highlights the challenges faced by business owners, such as time management, team building, and financial strategies. John explains his approach to coaching, focusing on identifying key priorities and eliminating tasks that hinder growth. The episode explores the personal aspects of coaching, discussing how coaching often involves a blend of business strategy and personal development. John and Jonathan emphasize the importance of articulating a clear vision and aligning the team's efforts to achieve business success.KEY TAKEAWAYSBusiness coaching often entails personal coaching in disguise, providing entrepreneurs with a non-judgmental space to articulate their thoughts and challenges. The primary challenges for small business owners revolve around time management, team building, and financial strategies.Effective coaching involves helping business owners prioritize tasks, identify their top priorities (top 5), and delegate responsibilities to focus on high-value activities.Business success requires aligning the team's vision and efforts, emphasizing the need for clarity and strategic planning.Entrepreneurs should recognize tasks that evoke a feeling of dissatisfaction ("crap list") and delegate those tasks to free up time for high-value activities.QUOTESAll business coaching is personal coaching in disguise. It's the manifestation of the owner's mindset or skills that have taken them as far as they can go, and now they need to go beyond that.""Focus doesn't mean saying yes; it's about learning to say no. It's the hard thing about focus because business owners often suffer from shiny object syndrome.""Business coaching often involves providing a sounding board for entrepreneurs, allowing them to express their thoughts and define their vision, leading to action."Connect and learn more about John Nieuwenburg in this link below.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/business-coach-canada/If you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe, review, and share with a friend who would benefit from the message. Check out these episode highlights: 01:00 - John's ideal client: There are typically two cohorts. So, one is their professional advisors, lawyers, accountants, and health practitioners. We all provide professional advice. The advice is different, but the business is the same. 01:24 - The problem he helps solve: Well, generally, their challenges around time, team, or money. So, time sounds like, "I've got too much to do and not enough time to do it. I can't get it done. I don't know, won't get done." Team, nowadays, is- top of the list is recruiting. It's very hard to find good people. 02:17 - The symptoms of the problem: Well, typically, the manifestations are in their business, but the real problems are in their life. This covers all those professionals from those industries and also including business coaches. The common problems they face are around time, team, and money. Not everyone may be aware of it but the importance of business coaching cannot be overstated. Author Andrea Schlapia provided a clear insight into the value business coaches provide when she wrote “business coaches support professionals who desire major and comprehensive improvements in all aspects of their firm. Collaboration with a coach encourages breakthroughs in change, helps manage evolution, and supports the implementation of desired outcomes.” To further explore the key role business coaches play in the success of any business, I talked to my first business coach, John Nieuwenburg. John is an award-winning professional business coach, TEDx speaker, and overall nice guy. John has been a professional business coach since 2004. To date, he has coached hundreds of clients and was awarded Canada’s CEO Trusted Advisor Award by MacKay CEO Forums in 2019. In this episode, John candidly answered some of the questions most people have about entrepreneurship and coaching—how you can hold yourself accountable, his advice for those who want to scale their business, and the common misconceptions people have about delegation. My hope is you’ll get as much value as I have from today’s episode, so please don’t miss it!

John Nieuwenburg is an award-winning business coach from Canada with a supportive family and wife, but this is only one side of his story. For years, he hid from everyone his feelings of hopelessness, until his depression took its toll and he attempted suicide. In this interview, John told me that when he looks back, it's hard for him to recognize the man from that past, particularly the person who attempted suicide. "The last 5 years have been the best in my life. Off the charts great!" He also talks about the shame he felt for not being happy despite everything he had accomplished, the impact his Ted Talk had on his career and personal life, and his dedication to breaking the silence surrounding mental illness and suicide. What are the effects of stigmatizing people with mental illness? Could destigmatizing mental illness help those who suffer? In this interview, we discuss these issues with John Nieuwenburg, who after attempting suicide now courageously shares his story about how he has battled back from depression. What’s inspiring about John’s story? Suicide and Mental Illness are stigmatized and painful for everyone who is affected. Depression is a silent killer. Partly because of the stigma attached to it. Our society will help people with any number of physical ailments. Yet the same people view mental illness with skepticism or suspicion or, uncertainty and distrust. Mental illness should not be a secret. Let’s change how we treat and view people with a mental illness. My hope is that suicide and mental illness are destigmatized and the misery they cause diminished. For John’s Inspirational Quotes and Notes Visit http://getinspiredtalks.org
