A few years ago, Canadian filmmaker Jonathan Lawrence spent some time researching the world of conversion therapy, and what he discovered became the backdrop for his first television series, “Alter Boys.” Jonathan tells Tom how he wants the series to be an examination of queer friendships, love and community.Plus, Jayli Wolf tells the story behind her song “Welcome Child” off her new EP, “God is an Endless Mirror.”
Jonathan Lawrence is a classically trained jazz violinist and fiddle player who began studying violin when he was 9. He utilizes his skills as an electric violinist, guitarist, vocalist, pianist, and loop station artist to perform both original songs and new takes on Americana covers. His album is called The Lonely Warrior which is available on most streaming platforms. He also teaches general music, violin, orchestra, and chorus at the elementary level, performs with the Gulf Coast Symphony, and sometimes subs with the Southwest Florida Symphony.
Dr. Jonathan Lawrence, Associate Professor in Religious Studies, is joined by recent Canisius graduates Mylan Hawkins and Abby Bradley to discuss the use of historical simulation games in their recent classes. Dr. Lawrence uses Reacting to the Past series games to teach concepts in the study of world religions, as well as critical analysis skills common across the liberal arts. He has written a game focused on Jesuit history, appropriate at Canisius College but also any course where perspectives on religion intersect with social class and political institutions. Hawkins and Bradley provide valuable student perspectives: it is fun to learn this way, but it was also challenging. Game-based learning makes rigorous demands on students' research, analysis, and presentations skills, as well as creativity, emotional intelligence and collegiality. At the same time, it compels students to consider the relationship between their cultures and experiences in the present, and people's problems and choices in the past. Along the way, they encountered plenty of surprises, too! Relevant Links and Resources Dr. Jonathan Lawrence Reacting to the Past Consortium Course Catalog: Religious Studies at Canisius

Fueled by their dark fantasies of murder, necrophilia, and cannibalism, Jeremiah and John set out on a murderous campaign, culminating in the needlessly cruel deaths of two young adults. Listen as we dive into the disturbed and chilling minds of these terrifying killers.Looking for our missing episodes? Misfit Jeremiah Rodgers, 21, and racist devil worshipper Jonathan Lawrence, 23, were serving time for petty crimes when they met in a Florida penal system mental hospital. A friendship grew from their shared lust for sadistic brutality, and once released, they teamed up to hunt human prey. In March, 1998, in Pensacola, Florida, while quietly watching TV, Leighton Smitherman was shot in the back by assailants hiding outside his home. Amazingly, he survived, not knowing that he'd been chosen at random by would-be-thrill-killers. Their next target wasn't so lucky.Justin Livingston, 20, died from multiple stab wounds - some more than six inches deep. The horror peaked on 7 May 1999, when Rodgers went on a 'date' with pretty Jennifer Robinson, 18, with Lawrence tagging along. The young woman was drugged and assaulted first by Rodgers, then Lawrence, before Rodgers shot her execution-style. But the worse was yet to come, an unspeakable act of mutilation that followed in the bloody footsteps of one of the most infamous serial killers of our time...FLESH COLLECTORS-Cannibalism and Further Depravity on the Redneck Riviera-Fred RosenNATUREBOX-Snack Smarter-Start Free Trial-For Delicious Details: http://www.naturebox.com/offer/free/sampler/?utm_source=truemurder&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=2014_podcast&afid=truemurder
