Salvation did not come without pain, suffering, and blood, but Jesus's sacrifice made our part possible! Pastor Al Dagel doesn't want us to confuse "easy" with "possible" or "Paid in full!"

Today's podcast answers a question from someone who endured painful experiences at an early age and is struggling to understand how they can find their way back to a healthy place in the church, with God, and as a healthy orthodox Christian. Traumatic experiences leave us feeling bad, shameful, and defective. We often have to come to realize that it was the experiences that were deeply flawed, not us. Trauma teaches us to expect far more of ourselves than God would ever expect.

A recent New York Times piece detailed the goals and game plan of one young professional pursuing self improvement. It was the sort of immaculately strategized daily schedule that would make the most goal oriented among us giddy with excitement, the sort of thing one would assume to produce dazzling results. Except, the culminating line of a detailed list of personal goals, strategic planning, and productivity hacks reads like this: "So far, she admitted, “none of this has stuck.”" This experience--one that many of us can relate to through the lens of religious burn out, anxious striving, and moralistic pressure--begs an important question for life following Jesus: How can we actually become like Jesus? Join us as we look at Matthew 11:25-30, continuing our look at the call to discipleship by seeing how the invitation to life with Jesus is simultaneously the path to becoming like him.
Send us a textOn this episode, we sit down with Phil Mayo, a preservation tradesman, Marine Corps veteran, philosopher, husband, and dad. Phil shares his honest life story through 6 songs, from GZA's “4th Chamber” to De La Soul's “The Magic Number.” Through the songs “Secret of the Easy Yoke” by Pedro the Lion and “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)” by John Prine, Phil walks us through his military trauma, loss of faith, and healing journey. He also takes us on a journey through the joys and struggles of love and relationships with the songs “Flowers In Your Hair” by The Lumineers and “For the Sake of the Song” by Townes Van Zandt. Our conversation highlights the pure, raw experience of being alive and how all of our stories are incomplete journeys still being written. Follow your hosts David, Raza, and Carolina every other week as they embark on an epic adventure to find the songs that are stuck to us like audible tattoos that tell the story of who we are and where we've been, to help us figure out where we're going. It's a life story told through 6 songs. Resolving to “try harder” doesn't make us look more like Jesus. But the flip side of the coin is also true—falling into passivity doesn't form us in Christlikeness. Yet Jesus casts a vision about living as whole-souled apprentices of love because he intends to help us become like him. Tune in for this episode of Soul Talks as Bill and Kristi discuss praying the Apprentice Prayer with the intention of living like Jesus. This practice will enthrall you with the vision of his life in the Gospels and help you become like him little by little through the power of the Spirit.Resources for this Episode:Your Best Life in Jesus' Easy Yoke: Rhythms of Grace to De-Stress and Live EmpoweredJourney of the Soul: A Practical Guide to Emotional and Spiritual GrowthAttend a Soul Shepherding Institute RetreatDonate to Support Soul Shepherding and Soul Talks

Discipleship Series | Week 4 | In this sermon, Darrell invites us to take up the offer of Jesus to trade in our heavy burdens for a new yoke that He offers and assures us is easy. We are weary because we wear yokes of lust, anger, revenge, and envy. Why is the yoke Jesus offers easy? Because his yoke is his relationship with the Father - to please the Father. The yoke he offers us is one that has been designed just for us. And we don't wear it alone - Jesus binds himself to us. He says, “Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest” New Course on Genesis: https://darrell-johnson-courses.thinkific.com/courses/genesis-1-11-the-story-that-makes-sense-of-our-stories Summer Intensives with The Way College: https://www.thewaychurch.ca/events/summer-intensives-parables-of-jesus-contemporary-worldview-apologetics The Bible Course: https://biblesociety.ca/thebiblecourse/ Darrell's Books: www.darrelljohnson.ca/books Give to the ministry of Darrell Johnson: www.darrelljohnson.ca/donate Mailing List | www.darrelljohnson.ca/#subscribe-form Website | darrelljohnson.ca YouTube | youtube.com/darrelljohnson

Did you know, most people can read 200 books in one year with just 417 hours? Most people also spend 705 hours on social media and 2,737.5 on TV a year. Jesus' invitation to an easy yoke might take time, but it's time you might already have!

Luke 5:1-11Matthew 11:28-30
We live in exile. We're away from our home. Our home is in heaven. On top of that, it becomes increasingly clear that we are the outsiders here in our own homeland. Less and less do the laws of our country reflect what God's Word says is good and right. More and more, there is a growing hostility toward those who faithfully hold to the Christian faith. We're in exile. Away from home. In Babylon. But Jeremiah has a word. A word about faith. A word about submission and surrender. A word about living faithfully Christian lives. A word about hope. A word about our return home. It's a powerful and important word that he has for us. The future belongs to us. Today, we get started in Jeremiah 27:1-15. It's a difficult word, but an important one for us to consider - surrender! Or maybe the yoke is easy and the burden light. We'll see.
How Do People Grow?: Part 3 - Jesus' Easy Yoke The notion of a discipline being essential to an authentic, heartfelt relationship may seem strange. After all, discipline is about routine; a relationship is fluid. But if you think about it, every healthy relationship is held together partly by disciplined actions and routines. Our relationship with God shares a similar dynamic. Abandoning these practices leaves God at the periphery of our lives. Regularly practicing these disciplines, however, draw us into a closer, more intimate, more dependent relationship with him.STUDY GUIDE
