Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
Today's podcast episode idea was inspired by an incredible success that I recently discovered from one of my students that I know you'll be interested in. This episode is highly relevant if you want to go into wildlife careers, especially graduate school, but the lessons that you'll learn from my student's experience apply to ANY situation. You'll learn a winning process that I regularly use with my students that will get you results. In her case, it was an extremely prestigious grant that enabled her to go to basically any graduate school in the US!You see, I was recently on LinkedIn and happened to notice that one of my former students, Camilla Price, is now going to graduate school. I was so excited for her and ready to congratulate her, when I noticed something even more exciting: that she was the recipient of a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP) grant. But even more exciting than this…she was the recipient after applying to the grant just one time and without having an established advisor to work with. Keep reading to understand why this is such a big deal…The NSF GRFP grant is a super competitive grant and a HUGE honor. I've known people who've received the grant and I was even awarded an honorable mention myself when I applied, but I didn't know anyone who got it BEFORE they started working with an advisor in graduate school, meaning that they did it all on their own!I cannot emphasize enough what a big deal this is for aspiring students wanting to go to graduate school: if you get it, you can go pretty much wherever you want for graduate school. You have your choice! This NSF grant provides all of your funding and a lack of funding is one of the biggest reasons why so many people seeking to go to graduate school can't get in. They approach potential graduate advisors and even if the advisors are interested in having another student, if they don't have the funding, then they can't take on that student for a Master's or Ph.D. This was a problem that Camilla was facing.I was so excited for Camilla – the last we had talked, Camilla had been trying to get into graduate school for a year or more. And I was super intrigued by how she went about writing the NSF GRFP. When I wrote my grant applications, I knew the advisor I would be working with and I had a specific Ph.D. project in mind. Without having a specific advisor to work with and therefore a lab and research area to focus on, how did she know what to write about? How did she do this all on her own? Without the help of an advisor to give her feedback and guidance? After extending my congratulations to Camilla, I knew I had to invite her to be on the podcast so that we could all share her success and learn the process that she took to gain this great honor. So many of my followers and students are interested in going to graduate school, and when you listen to Camilla's tips and tricks, you'll learn a ton from this episode. Even if you're not ready to go to graduate school, if you're looking to get into a wildlife career, you're going to benefit a lot. And if you're not interested in wildlife careers, that's okay too – there's still so much you can learn from Camilla's approach to receiving this grant. The strategy that she used is something that I teach in my Successful Wildlife Professional Program: start with the end in mind and work backwards.Tune in and hear about the strategies Camilla used in order to pick the graduate school of her dreams, and learn about how she settled upon the University of Colorado and chose to study wolverines. Along with Camilla's advice, I offer some additional tips and key takeaways to really solidify those points, no matter where you are in your career and what you're going for. These tips work!Specifically, I go over:Camilla's journey as an early-career professionalWhat the the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program is and why you should apply before you go to graduate school and even when you get inThe components of a NSF GRFP proposal and what it's like to write oneCamilla's entire process for creating her research proposal: from concept to submittingStrategies for creating a strong proposalThe importance of networking and how Camilla used it to help her write the strongest proposal possibleThe difference between Broader Impacts and Intellectual Merit: what they are and why they are important in all NSF proposalsand MORE!Dream of being a wildlife biologist, zoologist, conservation biologist, or ecologist? Ready to turn your love of animals into a thriving career?

President Donald Trump on Tuesday welcomed Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the White House, saying the two countries were close to finalizing a trade agreement. "We're going to talk about trade today and we are very close to finishing a trade deal, a big trade deal actually," Trump told reporters at the start of his meeting with the Philippine leader.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday that he will meet his Chinese counterpart next week in Stockholm and discuss what is likely to be an extension of an August 12 deadline for a deal to avert sharply higher tariffs. Bessent told Fox Business Network's Mornings With Maria program that trade with China was in "a very good place" and the meetings in Stockholm would take place next Monday and Tuesday. The United States will withdraw from the U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) by the end of 2026, the State Department confirmed on Tuesday, citing ideological differences and what it described as an anti-Israel bias and “globalist” agenda out of step with U.S. foreign policy.

This morning, the Pac-12 officially announced a historic partnership with CBS Sports — marking a bold new chapter for a conference on the rise. And today on Y-Option, presented by our founding partner 76, we welcomed back Commissioner Teresa Gould for her first full-length conversation since the deal was made public.Make no mistake — this is a monumental move. Starting July 1, 2026, when the new league officially launches, CBS becomes the anchor partner of the new-look Pac-12. That means college football and basketball — including the conference title games — will air across CBS, Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network, joining the same lineup that once featured the SEC and now hosts Big Ten games. And soon, the Pac-12.“This wasn't just about a TV deal,” Commissioner Gould told me. “It was about exposure, economics, and transformation — and CBS checks all three boxes.”Inside the CBS Deal:From our exclusive conversation, here's what stood out:✅ Broadcast + Cable CoverageCBS will carry premier Pac-12 football and men's basketball matchups, alongside CBS Sports Network for expanded programming. The conference championship games will be aired nationally.✅ Strategic AlignmentThe Pac-12's media rights journey didn't just attract interest — it created competition. CBS was among the first to reach out after the conference announced its reformation, and ultimately, their values and vision aligned.✅ The Power of ProductionThe decision to retain Pac-12 Enterprises was key. “Our ability to produce content efficiently and at a high level was a major asset,” said Gould. Expect the Pac-12's in-house production capabilities, led by Senior Vice President of Business Development and Studio Operations Michael Molinari, to power even more content — from live games to NIL opportunities for athletes.“We're Building an Unconference Conference.”Commissioner Gould called it a “blank slate” — a chance to build something new without the constraints of legacy deals or outdated models. And she's doing just that. From the media rights rollout to adding new member schools, the strategy has been deliberate. This phased approach is redefining how a conference is built. With CBS now officially locked in, the next move? Finalizing an 8th football member by 2026 to fulfill FBS requirements and to bring the new league to nine schools overall.“There's no playbook for this,” Commissioner Gould told me. “We're not just rebuilding. We're reimagining.”More from Our Conversation:

On the 63rd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, the co-host of the Growin' Up Rock Podcast, Steven Michael, review the self-titled 1987 breakthrough album from Whitesnake. Whitesnake was a veteran British blues hard rock band with limited success in the United States. By 1987, David Coverdale wanted to change the band's style and image to a more Americanized version. He started with the music. The album is considered Whitesnake's "hair Metal" phase. The band was always a double guitar band, but this time, guitarist extraordinaire, John Sykes would contribute all the guitars and assist in the lyrics. Long time bassist, Neil Murray was on board as was top notch drummer, Aynsley Dunbar. Finalizing this lineup is Shout It Out Loudcast's favorite, Don Airey. After the music was completed, Coverdale proceeded to fire all the band members and hired an all star lineup to tour and more importantly appear in the MTV videos, including, Vivian Campbell, Adrian Vandenberg, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldrich. But, more importantly he added his then fiancée, Tawny Kitaen to their videos and the band and the album exploded. Songs like "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love" made it to Number 1 and 2 on radio respectively. The videos were all over MTV. The album was produced by Mike Stone and Keith Olsen. The album made it to Number 2 on the Billboard Charts and went 8X Platinum. The success of the band is credited to Coverdale's amazing vocals and frontman capabilities and John Sykes legendary melodic guitar work. However, the videos and Tawny Kitaen's impact cannot be overstated. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Patreon pick. Please make sure you join!
