UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan Report on Human Rights on the Impact on Unilateral Coercive Measures on Venezuela following her 2/1- 2/12/21 visit is reviewed. It called for an immediate end to the US and Allied sanctions on Venezuela. The report found that sanctions have resulted in economic and human calamities for the entire population especially the poor and most vulnerable. While billions in Venezuelan assets that could be used for medicine and vaccines remain frozen at foreign banks the report claimed some 2.5 million Venezuelans now face severe food security. With the hardening of the sanctions over the years since 2005, state revenues to Caracas have been slashed by a staggering 99% leaving the country to live on just 1% of its presanction income. The UN rapporteur concluded by urging the US and UK and other allies, to “review and lift targeted sanctions in accordance with principle of international law, the rule of law, human rights and refugee law.” Please join us Monday night 5/31 at 6pm as our guest and investigative journalist Roger Harris brings light into the darkness around the well-hidden history of Venezuela that reveals the predatory nature of US relations with Venezuela and the south. More compelling is the detailed nature of the Venezuelan democracy and electoral process compared to US and other nations of the world that our guest explicates. In addition, the false image making that our government and its obedient mainstream media conduits feed and shape US public opinion around the issue of who is the real president of Venezuela, the US led “alleged” Venezuelan president Juan Guiado or the elected President Nicholas Maduro, is discussed in detail and explained. While surly the government of Venezuela led by its President Nicholas Maduro has made its share of mistakes that have led in part to the economic problems facing Venezuela today, this show brings light to the staggering influence US led foreign policy has had on the resulting consequences for Venezuelans. Our one-sided media coverage results in mistaken US public perceptions around who is most responsible for the Venezuelan economic meltdown. The dialogue between our guest, Board Member of the human rights organization Task Force on the Americas, Roger Harris and host Pedro Gatos provides documentable historical and contemporary insights, combining a macro and micro analysis of a host of Venezuelan related fact vs fiction precepts we may each have, for you to rejudge and reconsider for yourself as desired.

Daniel McAdams talks to Scott about the failed attempt to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in favor of opposition leader Juan Guiado. The U.S. government has made many claims about the illegitimacy of the latest elections, and has blamed the country’s current crisis on Maduro’s failures. Really, says McAdams, this is just another example of America’s State Department making false claims and conveniently exploiting existing problems to push their chosen political narrative. Fortunately the attempt seems to have failed completely, with Guaido’s support virtually gone. Sadly, says Scott, many libertarians fell for this narrative as soon as it was positioned as “socialism vs. capitalism”. Discussed on the show: “The Failure of the Juan Guaido Coup in Venezuela” (Antiwar.com Original) “Juan Guaidó tells EU that Venezuelan refugee crisis ‘compares with Syria’” (Financial Times) “Army Veteran Claims Prosthetic Legs Repossessed After Va Refused To Pay For Them: ‘Medicare Did Not Send Me To Vietnam’” (Newsweek) Daniel McAdams is the executive director of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity and the co-host of the Ron Paul Liberty Report. President Maduro, in late January, ordered diplomats in the American embassy in Caracas to leave the country. Since then, Venezuela's crisis has gained national attention here in America, sparking concern about what exactly is happening in the country. The international community has called for Maduro to step down and to allow opposition leader Juan Guiado to claim his position as the elected President. Claims of human rights abuses, severe corruption, and economic degradation have plagued Venezuela, the world's leading producer of oil. The real-life "Olivia Pope", Dr. Vanessa Neumann, breaks down the situation and provides clarity about what this crisis matters to America. In this episode of Heinz Radio guest interviewer Claudia Bustamante from Carnegie Mellon’s Latino/a Graduate Student Association sat down with John Polga-Hecimovich, assistant professor of comparative politics at the United States Naval Academy, to discuss the ongoing political and economic turmoil in Venezuela. Claudia and John discuss the details of the conflict, the key players in the current political standoff, and the role of bureaucracies, the military, and the international community in any potential resolution. In May, following the initial interview, John called back in to give an update on new developments in Venezuela after Juan Guiado called for mass mobilization against Maduro on April 30th. We at Heinz Radio would like to extend a special thanks to Claudia for hosting today’s episode, and to John Polga-Hecimovich for his generosity in speaking with us twice. You can find the latest insights from John by following him on Twitter at @jpolga

On January 23rd, millions of Venezuelans took to the streets in support of Juan Guiado, the president of the National Assembly, as he swore himself in as interim president. While Guiado has the support of many foreign governments, including the United States, President Nicolas Maduro insists that he is the rightful leader. How did Venezuela get to its current economic and political crisis? What happens next? Venezuelan columnist Moisés Naím discusses the future of the country with World Affairs CEO Jane Wales. Palast explains the situation in Venezuela, where the Trump administration has recently been signaling for U.S.-backed regime change. Although the claim is that it’s the U.S.’s duty to support “democracy,” says Palast, the concern is really for Venezuelan oil. Major players like the Koch brothers need reliable access to Venezuela’s particular form of heavy crude oil, and the Maduro government doesn’t play ball the way the Saudis, for example, do. Now Maduro’s political opponent, Juan Guiado, is openly calling for outside military support in his attempt to overthrow Maduro. Palast is adamant that that would be an utter catastrophe both for the U.S. and for the Venezuelan people.
Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America welcome news that military and police are starting to defy President Maduro and that more influential nations are recognizing Juan Guiado as the interim president. They also wade through Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's shifting explanations for the racist photo in in his medical school yearbook and Northam defying both parties by refusing to resign. And they give thumbs down to most of the Superbowl ads for being too serious and too obvious in their efforts to be woke, saving their biggest eye roll for the Washington Post.
5) Who is Juan Guiado, and why is he suddenly Venezuela's recognized president?; 4) Virginia Governor Northam says babies can be terminated after birth; 3) Pennsylvania library hosts drag queen Annie Christ; 2) Saudis collect about $100 billion in “corruption crackdown”; 1) What happened at a nuclear weapons facility in Nevada Monday?
With the issue of Venezuela dominating the news, especially after President Trump declared Juan Guiado to be the legitimate President of Venezuela, I am extremely pleased to have Eva Golinger as my guest on this program. Eva was a close personal friend and adviser to former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and knows the players in this crisis personally. Eva Golinger is the author of the best-selling book "The Chavez Code: Cracking US Intervention in Venezuela", and "Bush Versus Chavez: Washington's War on Venezuela". Her most recent book is "Confidente of Tyrants: The Story of the American Woman Trusted by the US's Biggest Enemies". We discuss the economic malaise in Venezuela and its origins, the history of US intervention in the Venezuelan democracy, and the hope for solving this crisis in a way that preserves the gains made for ordinary Venezuelans under Chavez.
Daily News Brief for January 29, 2019: *)US imposes sanctions on Venezuela oil company The US has hit Venezuela's state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela with sanctions. The move comes after opposition leader and self-declared president, Juan Guiado, called for more protests against President Nicolas Maduro. Maduro accuses Washington of being behind a political coup and says Venezuela does not want to become a US colony. *)Agreement in principle on Afghan peace talks Afghan Taliban and US officials have agreed in principle to the framework of a peace deal during talks in Qatar. This could end America’s longest war in Afghanistan, which is in its 17th year. Talks will continue as the framework of the deal still needs to be fleshed out. *)US sends more troops to Syria to assist with withdrawal Over 600 US troops arrived in Syria to assist Uncle Sam in exiting the war-torn country. US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal in December after a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The two leaders agreed on the need for more effective coordination over the war-ravaged country. *)US files charges against Huawei US announced criminal charges against Chinese tech giant Huawei and its Chief Financial Officer Meng Wangzhou. Charges include bank fraud, stealing trade secrets, obstruction of justice and violating US sanctions on Iran. Huawei has denied any wrongdoing. Meng is in Canada, where she was arrested in December on a request from Washington. *)UAE trolled for giving all 'gender balance' awards to men And finally, The UAE's discriminatory behaviour against women has once again become the centre of ridicule on social media. The country’s VP handed out awards for what he called “significant progress on gender equality” in the workplace. The only problem? All the honorees were men! Emirati rulers have come under harsh criticism for their draconian laws that allow marital rape and domestic violence.
Venezuelans are headed into uncharted political waters after a young opposition leader declared himself interim president. Juan Guiado said his declaration was the only way to end what he calls the "dictatorship" of President Nicolas Maduro. You may have heard about this story in recent days and have wondered how all this came about. To help us understand the political situation in Venezuela, I'm joined by Dr Jennifer McCoy, who is a professor of political science at Georgia State University. Guest: Dr Jennifer McCoy Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University
