This week Amanda and Wade discuss the classic (or at least it should be considered a classic) romantic comedy Crossing Delancey starring Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, and Reizl Bozyk. The hosts talk about the brilliant performance of Bozyk - and what a shame we didn't get to enjoy her in more movies, a hilarious scene about a self-defense class, and the incredibly well-written characters and plot that feel deep and authentic, yet deceptively simple. If you are a fan of romantic comedies, you owe it to yourself to add this gem to your queue. Plus, pickles! One man versus a giant corporation; little David's windshield wiper invention takes on the Detroit auto industry Goliath in this week's film, A Flash of Genius. Amanda and Wade discuss why men like business movies, how the irrepressibly avuncular Greg Kinnear did a great job of staying true to the real person he was portraying, and there's a fun scene about an Office-style sitdramedy concerning land rights on the moon. Enjoy! Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Ty Burrell! They are funny actors, but for this week's movie, The Skeleton Twins, they bust out their drama chops. Wade and Amanda discuss the amazing chemistry Wiig and Hader have with each other, and of course touch on the very difficult subjects this movie explores. You should watch it because it is very good, but TRIGGER WARNING: the movie, and hence this podcast episode, delves into the difficult subjects of depression and suicide. If you are sensitive to these subjects, skip to next week's episode. We've all been there- you're in need of a particular product or food item and it's not on your store shelves. While this scenario has always played out for consumers, it's likely that this happens to you more now than it did before COVID. But alas, we now can reason the cause to be from “supply chain disruptions,” a term more widely used by the public than possibly ever before. Throughout the pandemic, supply chain disruptions became the rationale for so many consumer misfortunes, and to a consumer, supply chain disruptions may look like empty shelves, but what does it look like to a producer or farmer? Workforce safety, lockdown policies, financial assistance, burnout and exhaustion, and emergency food dispersal were just some of the challenges that farmers, wholesalers, and retailers had to manage in a short amount of time. In this episode, Michaela Kandzer speaks with Noah Bloedorn, specialist in the areas of urban planning and food systems, about a multi-region, multi-institution project that assessed the impact of COVID-19 on food and agricultural systems to develop strategies for coping with future crises. This research and outreach project was supported by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).Resources:Lessons from COVID-19 ToolkitReimagining Resilient Agri-food Supply Chains Course RegistrationListen to our previous episodes on food systems during the pandemic:COVID-19 Food Systems Part 1: Pandemic Purchasing and Problem SolvingCOVID-19 Food Systems Part 2: Combatting Interruptions in the Food SystemTranscripts available here: https://piecenter.com/media/podcast/#transcriptAre you an educator? The children of Nome, Alaska were dying off from an epidemic of diphtheria: where the throat closes off and you die of suffocation. Everything was frozen up in that January of 1925 and the only way to get the diphtheria antitoxin to them was by sled dog. The 20-pound cylinder of serum was passed to the first of twenty mushers and more than 100 dogs who relayed the package 674 miles from Nenana to Nome. This podcast covers the last few musher's heroic stories, as the last stretch was the most treacherous part. There were 70 mph winds that brought the temperature down -85° F. Challenge: try not to shiver when you listen to this.
