PREORDER TOIL AND TROUBLE In Elizabeth Walter's story “The Sin-Eater,” Clive Tomlinson gets more than he bargained for on a trip to the Welsh Border to see and sketch an old pre-Reformation church. On his way back to his hotel, he is waylaid by a couple on a farm who are oddly insistent that he visit their ill son, Eddie. Clive quickly realizes that Eddie is dead, and he rushes through drinking some wine and eating a scone under pressure from the older couple. Later, he learns he took part in a sin-eating ritual, something the modern world has left behind. But, since he was unaware of what he was doing and doesn't believe in it, he couldn't possibly be affected by the ritual, could he? It's Women in Horror Month! So, for this episode we decided to put the spotlight on the French film director Julia Ducournau. We are discussing her debut feature film Raw (2016) and her most recent release Titane (2021), which made her the second female director to ever win a Palme d'Or award. We will also be briefly discussing her short film from 2011, Junior. The themes that we will be dissecting will be body horror from the female gaze, the monstrous feminine, as well as sexuality and gender as represented in Julia's films. Enjoy and welcome to our dark side… Intro/Outro Music: Robeast by Dance with the Dead Artwork by: Jess Hrycyk https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/JessHrycyk Editing work by: Jessica
It's time once again for another Women in Horror episode! This year, I'm joined by Jacqueline from A Cut Above Horror Review, and we're talking about the most influential women in horror. We approached this topic from both a historical and personal perspective, discussing women from many forms of media including authors, directors, actors, podcasters and more. This is obviously a huge topic and there is no way we can possibly cover everything in this one episode. Jacqueline and I encourage listeners to use this episode as a jumping off point to dive in and explore what others have to say about this topic and also to learn about the women who have played a crucial role in creating the art that you love. You can listen to Jacqueline's show at A Cut Above Horror Review Show Notes:Tabitha KingBarbara Crampton on The Movies That Made MeJulia Ducournau, The GuardianCarol Clover on “The Final Girl” archetype Carmen Maria Machado, MetalPsychoanalysis: A Horror Therapy PodcastFaculty of Horror PodcastWomen in Horror from A to Z (Film School Rejects)Quotes About Horror Cinema from Female FilmmakersFour Forgotten Women Who Built the Horror Genre

Daughters of Darkness features a stunning cover and four authors; Stephanie Ellis, Alyson Faye, Theresa Derwin, Ruschelle Dillon. Plus! At the end of the video I have an update on the grand giveaway happening at @darkbetweenpages : https://youtu.be/RUZiWU7V8ro Conjure a copy of Daughters of Darkness: https://amzn.to/39izht4 00:00 - Introduction 4:01 - Francois Vaillancourt 4:39 - Theresa Derwin 5:33 - Ruschelle Dillon 6:19 - Stephanie Ellis, 7:44 - Alyson Faye 9:53 - The Giveaway! The last time I read a book that I can recall that involved more than one author as a short story collection was Triage featuring Jack Ketchum Edward Lee and Richard Laymon. it was fantastic and I don't have a copy anymore - had I known then what I know now I'd have hung onto it as it is hard to come by. Daughters of Darkness, on the other hand, is a fresh release that came out in February of this year so 2021 and it came out in the very middle of women in horror month, so I'm a little behind on my review. This was a graciously gifted review copy from Ruschelle Dillon, one of the authors featured here and who you may recall from a previous new releases video with her book of the stain and she had also equally graciously interviewed me for the horror tree 2 years ago. Also featured in this book are Stephanie Ellis, Alyson Faye, and Theresa Derwin. So, we have a group of four women writers who specialize in horror of varying kinds in one book. From the back cover: A quartet of established female horror writers from both sides of the Atlantic have joined supernatural forces to bring you - Daughters of Darkness - a publication from the women-run indie press Black Angel. These stories will take you across the centuries, from Whitechapel to New Orleans, from dark humour to Gothic, weaving the weird with the macabre. Within these pages, meet the myriad monsters these female writers have conjured, letting them loose to roam and cast long shadows. The gorgeous cover as mentioned I absolutely adore and it was designed by Francois Vaillancourt who is Canadian and you may recognize from many other books covers an author's if you're out there he often designs covers and then has them up for commission beautiful at work and of course on my list of things to achieve the cover by Francois Vallencourt. A fantastic collection that I do recommend if you are not familiar with these authors or just want to line your shelf with some really nice dark female offerings. I hope to see more of this being that this could be an annual tradition it would be really cool, or just more collections with more than one story by each author. I'd be very interested in collections like that as opposed to the traditional anthology. Today we conclude our celebration of Women in Horror Month at the Wicked Library with a terrifyingly wicked tale by Aaron Vlek.Alfonse de Cartier is the modern day descendant of one of the greatest mambo priestesses New Orleans has ever seen. Unfortunately for Al, as his colleagues at the New Orleans police department call him, all that made his forebear great has eluded him. That is, with the exception of the family patron, the Lwa of Death, the Lord of the Crossroads, the Baron Samedi himself. A series of unusual deaths become a test for de Cartier as his patron, the Baron, tries to enlighten him on the basics of the uncanny art of dying, while, The Baron Samedi himself must deal with a presumptuous adversary who would seduce him and rob him of what is rightfully his.Author: Aaron VlekTold by: Denise Michelle Johnson | Guy Fortt | Nelson W. Before I get into the article, I would like to welcome The Horror Spinsters to the Morbidly Beautiful podcasting network, and they just happen to be today’s interview for Women in Horror Month! Kelly and Jess are two Canadian girls who absolutely love horror, especially in the feminist sense. They release their cast, I Spit On Your Podcast, on the last day of every month, and they talk about everything from horror movies to TV shows, and everything in between. Generally they have some kind of theme attached to the episodes as well. Don’t let the name fool you though, The Horror Spinsters aren’t you stereotypical versions of a spinster, in fact it’s a term they love, and are taking back, which is something we chat about in the interview. Feminism is important to them, from words, terms, and labels, to what it means in the realm of horror. Speaking of terms, words, and labels, I absolutely adore the name they’ve chosen for their podcast. It exemplifies everything they’re about, and it’s really quite awesome! But during the interview, they were kind enough to chat to me about their passions, their podcast, and what WiHM means to them. They have a lot of great insights and some excellent opinions on a variety of topics. These are two girls you will most certainly want to keep an eye out for when they make their debut later this month on Morbidly Beautiful!Keep an eye out on Ominous Origins for some more great interviews in the coming days and weeks. The response to being interviewed has been outstanding, and I’m truly honored to be able to chat with these wonderful women of horror. In fact, the number of people I’ve gotten to talk to has been so high that the release schedule will be increased by the end of the month, so look out for Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays for now, leading into the last week which might just feature an episode a day! It’s exciting stuff! You can find the Spinsters of Horror below:https://www.spinstersofhorror.com/Instagram: @venal_anatomica@spectralJessPodcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/1Txm2abybvVXBo9jZS091y Or anywhere you find your PodcastsOminous Origins Merch: www.redbubble.com/people/HorrorShots See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Then author and contributing editor to Rue Morgue magazine, Monica S. Kuebler joins us to send our women in horror month coverage off in style. Plus we've got the top 10 things trending in metal and horror, Scott reviews the new Candlemass, Walt's been all over Spotify as the ADDJ with this week's plethora of new releases, Dan comes to blows with the Cannibal Club, but he doesn't speak Portuguese, and Tom marks out for Alita Battle Angel.
Tessa and Paul sat down on Skype with the lovely Avelina De Moray, known for (well myself anyways) her Vampire Artworks. Nowadays, you may actually know her from the amazing quality handbags or wallets if not both. Avelina also shares why there hasn't been any new artworks on top of shining light or should I say blood on As Angels Bleed. We also chat about the Evolution and her thoughts on Women In Horror Month. We also learn how Avelina found the models she used to create those specific images right, as of diving into the collaborations with people to create items. Check out AvelinaDeMoray.com to purchase your new handbags, wallets, artworks, jewelry and more. Also check out AsAngelsBleed.com for all her band merch and videos. Women in Horror Month 2019 concludes at WUH with an episode on Jocelin Donahue and Alex Essoe and their starring roles in two of my favorite modern horror movies: THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL (2009) and STARRY EYES (2014).
In October of 2017, we had the pleasure of screening our last feature film, Theta States, at the Shawna Shea Film Festival. While there, we met UK Writer/Producers Matthew Davies and Lee Wignall of Ash Mountain Films, who were there premiering their first feature, the incredible folk-horror film Dogged. Since then, we’ve become pretty close with them and in December, Matthew happened to be in NYC, so we sat down with him to discuss the writing, crowdfunding, production, and release of Dogged, as well as their second feature, the home-invasion flick Nefarious. Ash Mountain Films successfully crowdfunded both features, and Matthew walks us through their process of hard work, dedication, and (occasionally) sheer blind luck, to get to completion. Set stories from the fun, the scary, the nightmarish, and the struggle to finish both films. You can follow Ash Mountain Films and their work here: https://twitter.com/ashmountainfilmhttps://www.facebook.com/doggedhorrormoviehttps://www.facebook.com/NefariousFilm/ Join us on Thursday, February 21st at the Stone Creek Bar & Lounge for The Big Bloody Apple: NYC Women in Horror Month Event, organized by Lindsay and CongestedCats’ Christina Raia. Mia Farrow, though not necessarily labeled a genre actress, has been in some of my favorite horror films. In Episode Three of the #WomenInHorrorMonth series I discuss four (well five) of Ms. Farrow's horror films: ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968), SECRET CEREMONY (1968), SEE NO EVIL (1971), THE HAUNTING OF JULIA (1977), and (ever so briefly) THE OMEN (2006). This week the Two Gay Geeks have a round table discussion with three "Scream Queens" about February being Women in Horror Month. We have our friend Patricia Chica, Eileen Dietz, and Michelle Romano. Patricia is a Director and Producer of films and has created several wonderful horror shorts. Eileen Dietz is a Scream Queen going back to the days of The Exorcist. Michelle Romano is an Actress, Director and Producer of horror films and recently was accepted into the Producers Guild of America. We chat with them about their careers and Women in Horror Month. About Women in Horror Month Women in Horror Month (WiHM) is an international, grassroots initiative, which encourages supporters to learn about and showcase the underrepresented work of women in the horror industries. Whether they are on the screen, behind the scenes, or contributing in their other various artistic ways, it is clear that women love, appreciate, and contribute to the horror genre. WiHM celebrates these contributions to horror throughout the year via the official WiHM blog, Ax Wound, The Ax Wound Film Festival, and with the official WiHM event/project database in February. This database—in conjunction with the WiHM social media fan base—actively promotes do-it-yourself annual film screenings, blogs/articles, podcasts, and any other form of creative media with the ultimate goal of helping works by and featuring women reach a wider audience. This inclusive and positive movement is open to everyone, just as we believe the horror genre should be. In our second segment, we talk briefly about our thoughts of Star Trek: Discovery (no spoilers). In our third segment, we highlight recent articles posted to the tggeeks.com n the past week. As always we have our birthdays and we have the ever popular feedback segment. We welcome your feedback. Please, let us know what you think. The second episode of the Women in Horror Month special series is on Karyn Kusama's tense horror/thriller THE INVITATION. This movie triggers my social anxieties, contains my favorite horror sub-genre, and has a killer cast.

The first episode of the Women in Horror Month special series is THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE. Written by Rita Mae Brown as a parody of the slasher genre but filmed straight by Amy Holden Jones, what emerged was a slightly off-kilter horror flick that might just make you question what it is you like about these films. [EPISODE CORRECTION: Brinke Stevens was in TSPM not Michelle Bauer.]
It's Women in Horror Month and I wanted to do my part to promote films directed by women and centered around women. This is the preview episode, and my plan is to put out a short episode every week in February, with the goal of compiling them all at the end.
Well, we have returned, and we are calling this the first episode of season 3! This week, we start off a little slow, explain our sorta-new format and our new “Seasons” experiment. So, going back to our New Years episode from 2018, we review what our goals for the year were, how many of them we accomplished, and set our new goals for 2019. That’s mostly the conversation for this episode, just trying to get back into the swing of things. Along the way we discuss a bit of shooting Father of Lies, the success of Beneath, and the progress on our new short films Miss Understood Monster and Matryoshka! Join us on Thursday, February 21st at the Stone Creek Bar & Lounge for The Big Bloody Apple: NYC Women in Horror Month Event, organized by Lindsay and CongestedCats’ Christina Raia. Films! Trivia! Yep, it's a long episode, but this story is just 'oh so good!' The hosts have so much to discuss with this mysterious, twist-turning, deeply sad family melodrama turned ghost story. Podcast fans gave a slew of great film recommendations, but Tracy and Minki chose one fan's wish for them to review this 2003 Korean horror film. It was a perfect pick since it features females as the main characters during this special month...that's right, it's Women in Horror Month! The two young actresses in this tragic horror really crank out the anguish and tears in both the creepy and the gut-wrenching scenes. So, join the hosts in saluting females in genre films that keep audiences coming back for more. Sure, this is another film that features females struggling with psychosis — which is ironically the basis of one of Tracy's favorite birthday gifts: House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films — but hey, it's a good story, and thankfully, it's not as heavy as a rape revenge film. Celebrate all the bad ass females in horror films this month and send recommendations for your favorite film de femme!
Welcome to Volume 3 Chapter 40 of the Necrocasticon. We're crossing over with fellow Project Entertainment Network podcast IT COOKS this week to bring you: IT SMOKES! Yes, Amber Fallon joins us for Women in Horror Month and exchanges meat smoking recipes with Smokin' Walt! And yes, there's as much double entendre as you would expect. Now, with Amber joining Tom, Scott, Walt and Az, it's only natural that we focus on a topic might make some people ravenous. Cannibal horror... how do you like your horror cooked? We'll discuss what you should be devouring in this taboo breaking sub-genre, from Hannibal to Sweeney Todd and fill you in on cannibals from horror novels, video games and music, too. Whatever happened to Timothy? Hmmmm. We also review the new Cloverfield film, oh, it's a paradox, alright, and Tom lets us know if we'll be happy getting lost watching The Ritual. All this, plus Mr. Scott and Az remember Cliff Burton on his birthday.
Whether they kill you with their mind, or their...good looks and monstrous teeth, some chicks just can't help but kill. Estrogen, revenge, murder and blood...lots of blood: That's what this episode is made of.
After watching last episode’s movie, Minki wanted to watch ANOTHER feminist movie depicting a strong female lead who has to protect herself in an antagonistic world...but this time, one written and directed by a female...since he thought the male writer and director of Teeth wasn’t quite as careful with his storytelling as he should’ve been. So, the hosts chose the first horror short, of the two covered in this episode, because it features a bad ass chick with a “fire inside,” which proves to come in handy when rape-y men come along. Then stay tuned as they hack up the second short for failing to take its decent premise and turn it into something that really goes bump...in the night. Also, this is the last episode of the show, because Minki said they just had to make it to 20 episodes when they first started, so Tracy is shutting this thing down. JUST KIDDING. They always come back...for one final scare :)
Originally recorded at the end of February 2017 - Cat and Gretchen get dissectin'! Tune in as Cat and guest Gretchen review XX (2017), discuss Women in Horror Month, and whether or not films pass the Bechdel test - and what that means for movie-goers. Interstitial director: Sofia Carrillo "The Box" director: Jovanka Vuckovic "The Birthday Party" director: Annie Clark (St. Vincent) "Don't Fall" director: Roxanne Benjamin "Her Only Living Son" director: Karyn Kusama Do you agree with this instyle.com article's movie picks? We'd love to hear from you!
They’re baaaack and ready to continue the conversation from episode 10. But first, Minki shares a blood orange beer adorned with an illustration of Jason Voorhees with Tracy and then Tracy shares a horror anthology graphic novel called Through the Woods, written and illustrated by Emily Carroll. After that, they both share their thoughts on the final two stories, which they believe are the “horror-iest” of the four stories from the female-led horror anthology, XX. We’ve got a demonic possession story set in the desert (Don’t Fall by Roxanne Benjamin) and a Rosemary’s Baby-type story (Her Only Living Son by Karen Kusama). Also, don’t touch Minki’s iPad.
Following up on the conversation about Karen Kusama in the Women in Horror Month Special Episode, Minki and Tracy discuss the first two stories from the horror anthology, XX. Written, directed and produced by women, and starring only female leads, this set of horror shorts provide the hosts with material to incite a fun discussion, even if Tracy feels like it’s yet another collection of slightly unfinished, unfulfilling and not-quite-horror stories. It’s no Creepshow. Oh, yeah, and Tracy made it back from South Africa, so she’s alive and Minki still has a co-host. Join them for one more scare...until they’re back next week with a discussion of the final two stories from XX.
OH, HEY. It’s Women in Horror Month. Join the hosts for their first ever mini-sode, where they do something a little different just for this special month. They’ll discuss some of their favorite females who’ve impacted the genre, including screenwriters, producers, directors and memorable actresses. At the end, they run through the top 5 badass women leads in some of our favorite horror movies.

We're back! The featured music is brought to you by director and actress Lisa Hammer from her album Radiana! The second episode of the Official Women in Horror Month podcast is a recap of this past February and a big, huge thank you to all who participated. If we forgot to mention you, multiple apologies. The response was overwhelming in a positive way and we appreciate all the hard work and effort from ambassadors, event organizers, the generosity of sponsors and our Viscera family. Ashlee summarized her event, Philly Loves Women In Horror with a focus on how its purpose was to foster the spirit of philanthropy for your local arts & youth non-profits. By the sheer excitement of audience members and continued partnership with donation recipient Lil Filmmakers, Ashlee's already planning on a bigger platform next year with more films and a Q&A panel that will include co-host Hannah as well as Philadelphia horror mavens Jenny Dreadful and Samm Deighan. La Petite Morgue's Kellie posted a brief recap of the organization's event, Bloody Gore-geous Monologues and shared some next steps for the budding organization. Jovana Dimitrijevic's triumphant quest to pay homage to women horror artists in Serbia, Girls Can Do Horror spanned over the stretch of 10 days as a multimedia showcase of the work and insight these artists are contributing to the horror community. Jovana also had a film screening event on March 8th in Postdam, Berlin Germany. Details can be found on the Facebook page where Jovana continues to share amazing art by talented women! A few WiHM supporters came through with some great PSA's! Shout out to Fem Furry of The Whorer podcast, Tonjia Atomic, and the Soska twins for putting in the time to keep the PSA component alive! Hannah & Ashlee spoke with writer and producer of the Universal Pictures release Mama (2013) Barbara Muschietti about sibling creative partnership strategies, working with Neil Cross and Guillermo del Toro, Mama 2 (?), and the love of horror films.
