Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Irving has announced her sophomore album, Always Will Be, featuring 10 electrifying renditions of songs from her longtime friend Willie Nelson's iconic catalog. The album includes contributions from Amy Helm, Louis Cato, Steve Earle, Chris Pierce, Lizzie No, and Willie himself, and is due out on April 25 via Queen of the Castle Records/Missing Piece Records. Amy Irving and Willie Nelson's decades long friendship began when the pair first met on the set of the 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose. After dueting on a reimagining of his song "I'm Waiting Forever" for her 2023 debut album, Nelson reached out to Irving with a proposition: Why not record another album, one comprised entirely of his own work? Irving took him up on the offer, and the result is an incredibly heartfelt album, one that is rooted in love and friendship. Over Irving's prolific career, she has been seen in Brian DePalma's Carrie and The Fury, stage performances of Romeo & Juliet with the Los Angeles Shakespeare Society and Broadway's Amadeus. Irving was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Yentl, and has captivated audiences with beloved starring roles in films including Crossing Delancey, The Competition and Micki and Maude.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Amy Irving's film career soared in the 1980s. She was featured in the film Yentl, a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination. In the movie Crossing Delancey, Irving plays a single woman who falls in love with a pickle merchant. In real life, Irving married Steven Spielberg, a relationship that ended in divorce. She co-starred with Willie Nelson in the film Honeysuckle Rose and that was the beginning of a life-long friendship with Nelson. Irving's career has shifted away from acting and towards music. She's got a new album which features Willie Nelson covers. It's called Always Will Be. I spoke to Amy Irving at her home in Westchester about singing as a second act and what it's like to be an older woman in Hollywood. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.

For this cycle's "Mise-Unseen" entry, Julian, Emilio and Madeline fire up 'Hester Street', Joan Micklin Silver's overlooked and under-appreciated film from 1975 depicting the struggles one Jewish family, recently immigrants to the United States, face while assimilating to life in their new homeland at the turn of the century. The trio comment on the film's unique depiction of New York City (particularly in relation to when it was first released), the unusual complexity that most characters are given, how centering Gitl's journey gives the film a strong emotional core, the film's unexpected humor, its portrayal of the working class Jewish immigrant experience class, and why this movie and its story feel so unique. They then have a great chat with Sharyn Rothstein, an accomplished writer who recently adapted 'Hester Street' for the stage, and discuss what was meaningful to her about this story, what details from the film spoke to her, and what the stage production does to modernize and reshape the story for today's audiences. It's a deep dive into an unsung 1970s NYC film you won't want to miss! Sharyn Rothstein is an award winning playwright, teacher, and writer for television. Her play "Bad Books" is currently running at Roundhouse Theater in Bethesda, Maryland through April 27th. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk to movie stars! About a movie that people love and the hidden gems they've also made! Dan Mecca and Conor O'Donnell were lucky enough to speak with Amy Irving and Peter Riegert, on the occasion of the Criterion release of Joan Micklin Silver's Crossing Delancey. We discuss the legacy of the film nearly forty years later. With Irving we touch on Honeysuckle Rose, Carried Away, and her new music album. With Riegert we talk about Chilly Scenes of Winter (also directed by Micklin Silver), the feature he directed King of the Corner, and the eclectic range of characters he's played over the years. Additionally, we mention Steven Soderbergh's oeuvre (they were both in Traffic!), the actor's directorial debuts Riegert starred in (Infinity and Jerry & Tom specifically), and how they've both grown as performers over time.
Today, we're celebrating pioneering American woman director Joan Micklin Silver by looking at her biggest flop, the excellent Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979), and her biggest hit, Crossing Delancey (1988). Although both films are over 35 years old, they mostly still read as very modern. Woman in Revolt Editor-in-Chief Lindsay Pugh joins Alex Heeney to discuss why we love Joan Micklin Silver, why her films have aged so well (and the few things that haven't), and what makes her such a great filmmaker both as a visual stylist and a modern storyteller. *** Want to discover more recent restorations of films by and about diverse groups? This week Amanda and Wade discuss the classic (or at least it should be considered a classic) romantic comedy Crossing Delancey starring Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, and Reizl Bozyk. The hosts talk about the brilliant performance of Bozyk - and what a shame we didn't get to enjoy her in more movies, a hilarious scene about a self-defense class, and the incredibly well-written characters and plot that feel deep and authentic, yet deceptively simple. If you are a fan of romantic comedies, you owe it to yourself to add this gem to your queue. Plus, pickles! In "Loverboy" (1989), Patrick Dempsey plays Randy Bodek, a college dropout who has been drifting through life and working as a pizza delivery boy. When he meets a beautiful and wealthy young woman named Alex (Barbara Carrera), she offers him a job as a "delivery boy" for her high-end escort service. At first, Randy is hesitant to take the job, but he soon finds that being a male escort comes with a lot of perks - not just financial ones, but also the attention and admiration of numerous wealthy and beautiful women. However, as Randy's double life as a delivery boy and an escort starts to spiral out of control, he finds himself getting in over his head and struggling to keep his two worlds from colliding. Meanwhile, Randy's girlfriend Jenny (Kirstie Alley) is growing increasingly suspicious of his behavior and starts to investigate what he's been up to. As Randy's lies and deceptions start to catch up with him, he must find a way to set things right and win back Jenny's trust. "Loverboy" is a romantic comedy that explores themes of ambition, temptation, and the consequences of dishonesty. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Patrick Dempsey in one of his early breakout roles, and was directed by Joan Micklin Silver, who is best known for her work on the films "Crossing Delancey" and "Hester Street." As a young actor (Local Hero, Crossing Delancey, Animal House) he played Goldberg in The Birthday Party, overseen by Harold Pinter himself. One speech was particularly opaque. “I had no idea what it meant, but to say these words was to be Isaac Stern on the violin.” Learning to trust the writer. Produced with the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

For our last episode of 2023, we wrap up the Brattle's yearlong look back on 100 years of Warner Brothers by diving into how the studio reacted to the blockbuster era. Examining Warner's overt attempts to capitalize on its "franchise" intellectual properties like Superman and Batman, to its unexpected '80s blockbusters like Private Benjamin, Gremlins, and Beetlejuice, to the risks that paid off like Purple Rain, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and The Lost Boys, to some lesser-known gems like Crossing Delancey, Stand and Deliver, and True Stories.
Actors, writers and real-life pals Rosa Labordé and Anna Hardwick – whose new streaming series Nesting premieres on Crave in Canada this Friday, December 22nd -- make some noise for Joan Micklin Silver's Crossing Delancey, the unassuming 1988 dramedy where Amy Irving plays a New York bookseller torn between a flashy European author and a nice pickle man. Your genial host Norm Wilner does enjoy an old dill.

From his first viewing at the Angelika as a freshman at NYU, Joan Micklin Silver's 1988 rom-com Crossing Delancey blew Michael Showalter's mind. In this episode Michael shares how and why the movie made a lasting mark and how it continues to influence his work today. Adapted by Susan Sandler from her play of the same title, this is the story of Izzy Grossman (Amy Irving), a nice Jewish girl with roots in Manhattan's Lower East Side but now living uptown with literary-adjacent aspirations. Sam Posner (Peter Reigart) is a purveyor of pickles, with a shop down the street from Izzy's grandmother's apartment. We learn how the film's spot-on portrayal of 1980s city living with characters who exist in coffee shops and bars and bookstores, and apartments, resonated with the life 18-year-old Michael imagined for himself. As he unpacks what makes this a rom-com classic, co-hosts Cooper and Tabitha spark a debate around the off-screen future for Sam and Izzy, and where they might be today. Hosted on Acast. Hi all. Living in NYC isn't that great when it comes to food shopping and Trader Joe's is no exception, or as I like to refer to it as Douche Central. A humidity dehydration splitting headache; the 1988 film Crossing Delancey & a tribute to the villian in the Rodney Dangerfield classic, Back to School, in which I realize, I need to remake. Except I realize in 2023 my character would be cancelled after ending up in the the girls sorority shower by mistake. But for the first 10 minutes before that. . . . HIGHlarity. Hosted on Acast. When you want to add joy and beauty to your life, listen to the Roches. There's magic in these three sisters' harmonies and good humor and heartbreak in their songs. They are Maggie and Terre and Suzzy, the last of whom is the little sister age-wise, the middle sister voice-wise and the glue personality-wise. Speaking from her New York home, Suzzy Roche reflects on the wonders and challenges of singing with her sisters and dealing with a music industry that thought it could make stars out of them. She also discusses the origins of their "Hallelujah Chorus" interpretation and “The Death of Suzzy Roche”; her standout acting turn in “Crossing Delancey”; and what made Maggie, who died from breast cancer in 2017, so special. Amy was brought up in the world of theater. She was put on stage from the time she was nine-months-old, her father was the director and her mother was the actress, they didn't want baby sitters for their children, so if she wasn't performing, she would stay in the wardrobe department or her mother used to put her in the second row center where she could watch her. And, before she was 10-years-old, she had already worked in several plays. At a young age, Amy Irving was trained at the American Conservatory Theater and Britain's London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (L.A.M.A.D.A.). She made her off-Broadway debut at the age of 17 and, from that moment to date, she received critical acclaim, appearing in such plays as: "Heartbreak House" (1983), "The Road to Mecca" (1988), "Broken Glass" (1994), "The Three Sisters" (1997), "The Guys" (2002), "Ghosts" (2002) and "Celadine" (2004), among others. In 1976, Amy made her film debut, playing "Sue Snell", one of her most unforgettable characters in Stephen King's Carrie (1976), a classic in the horror genre, taken to the big screen by director Brian De Palma. For the next few years, Irving continued working in important films, The Fury (1978), also directed by De Palma, Voices (1979) and The Competition (1980). Later, in 1983, she gave a fine performance as "Hadass", in Barbra Streisand's Yentl (1983), and won an Oscar nomination for her great work in that successful film. Two of her best opportunities arrived in the late 80s, when she played "Anna Anderson" in Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna (1986) and "Isabelle Grossman" in the romantic comedy, Crossing Delancey (1988); she received a Golden Globe nomination for each movie. She went on to starring roles in Voices, Honeysuckle Rose, The Competition and Micki and Maude. In 2023 Amy released her album -BORN IN A TRUNK- featuring ten cover songs pulled from her life and career. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Peter Riegert Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Stories, stories, and more stories, one better than the next, all fantastical! Peter Riegert exceeded my high expectations and that's an exceedingly tall order. Somehow 2 hrs and 45 min flew by in an instant, yet at the same time, we got to know so much about Peter, his life, his work, his thoughts, his heart, and his art. From the Bronx boy playing stickball to marching with Martin, who had a dream, to an underachieving student, teacher, and waiter, Bella Abzug, to improv, War Babies to Peter's first resume and headshot––hysterical story! From Off-Broadway, a Marx Brother, to Mamet, aligning lives and love with Bette Midler, Mash, Coma, to the game changer, Animal House, how he got it, so many stories from there to here… Bette, F. Murray Abraham, Tom Matheson, John Belushi, Karen Allen, Mark Metcalf, Chilly Scenes of Winter, John Heard, an Academy Award nomination, Crossing Delancey, Amy Irving, the pickle man––a chick magnet, Local Hero, how that came to be, what it meant to him, crazy stories, one of which brought a tear or two to both our eyes. Burt Lancaster, with whom he shared a long ago historical memory, to Tony Soprano and how James Gandolfini allowed Peter a searingly horrifying yet graceful exit from The Sopranos to Succession and the Amazon crime drama he begins filming on Friday. We hit highlights of Peter's work, dug deep into the man, and I hope, gained a new friend. As accessible and fun as Animal House's Boon, as charming and emotional as Crossing Delancey's Sam, and as savvy, transformative, and thoughtful as Local Hero's Mac, Peter Riegert is a warm, complex, fiercely talented human whom I've adored since first sight, and respect and appreciate even more now. This time with him was a gift. He's a mensch beyond measure. I so needed the laughs and the eggs. Our theme this month is “Generations,” and we're joining renowned pickle man enthusiast and Elaine May biographer Carrie Courogen to discuss Joan Micklin Silver's intergenerational NYC rom-com, Crossing Delancey (1988). We chat about marriage brokerage, douchey literary parties, movie magic in a Papaya King, Jewishness and immigration in Silver's oeuvre (watch her 1973 educational short here), the challenges women filmmakers faced and face to get features financed, and the incontrovertible hotness of young Peter Riegert. Jenna and Veronica are back at it – having long conversations that only barely have to do with movies! In this latest episode of Notes From the Back Row, they investigate what it is about cities that truly gives them character and the movies that best reflect that spark. Because this is Jenna and Veronica, they stick to the lakes they're used to and focus mostly on San Francisco and New York City. Oh and literally spend the first 20 minutes just talking about weird commuting stories and the evils of Capitalism. But it comes back to movies! It all comes around! Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. For his new book, Films of Endearment, critic Michael Koresky (Reverse Shot) watched 10 movies from the 1980s with his mother, a fellow movie lover. This simple premise becomes a way to talk about the decade's bounty of great acting by women and reflect on the many facets of his mother's life and their relationship together. Michael makes it look easy as he mingles film criticism, family biography, and social history, with his characteristic insight, sensitivity, and knowledge of film history. For this episode, Michael is joined by critic Molly Haskell, whose influential body of work has spanned The Village Voice, New York magazine, and Vogue, and includes the landmark critical work From Reverence to Rape. It's a wonderful pairing of sensibilities and enthusiasms for the work of these actresses, spanning films from 9 to 5 to Mommie Dearest to Crossing Delancey. Peter Riegert (Assemblyman Zellman) joins Michael and Steve for this week’s episode of Talking Sopranos. Peter is both an Oscar and Emmy nominee known for his work on Animal House, The Mask, Oscar, Barbarians at the Gate, Crossing Delancey and so much more. He talks about how he got into the business and his first TV job on M*A*S*H. He also shares what it was like to work with John Belushi and the entire cast on Animal House. Peter originally auditioned for the role of Elliot Kupferberg on the Sopranos but completely blew the audition. He didn’t get the part but David called him a year later to play Assemblyman Zellman. Peter shares some incredible stories about working with James Gandolfini and how he supported him in a way most actors would not. Then Michael and Steve get into the episode but keep getting sidetracked with stories of ghosts, aliens, squid and UFO’s. They definitely don’t see eye to eye on the world beyond but do agree this is an incredible episode. Lots of fantastic inside info is revealed in Talking Sopranos “Calling All Cars” S4-Ep11. Remember to subscribe to the Talking Sopranos podcast wherever you get your podcasts and go to our website to buy merchandise and ask Michael and Steve questions.https://talkingsopranos.comhttps://www.betterhelp.com/talking

“ I think the very first time I became aware of our guest Melanie Mayron it would have to have been in the August of 1978 when, at the age of eleven, I went on a hot and blissfully underpopulated New York City in August 1978 late afternoon to see this movie called GIRLFRIENDS. I dearly wish I remembered the exact theatre that was exhibiting it in that first run. (Was it The New Yorker? Bleeker Street Cinema?) But it was in Manhattan of August of 1978 which was the location and time of so much of that film's subject. I loved this picture as much as an eleven year old could and I loved this protagonist by the name of Susan Weinblatt . A few years later in the 1980s I would see her on stage in the play debut of Crossing Delancey, which was in fact written for her. As I mentioned on this episode Mayron was in two of my all time favorite moves: Girlfriends just mentioned, and the other was CAR WASH . Both are are on my 100 Greatest list in fact. She was one of the names on this dream list that our producer, Laurie Strickland urged me to start and maintain. Mayron is remarkable on a number of levels. One thing which I feel is taken too lightly by many is her flexibility with a the widest breadth of styles, not as easy as some might think. Not only does she excel in the broadest of comedies like Car Wash and the severest of dramas ( Playing For Time , Missing ) as well as stage and screens large and small, she is at the forefront of the current streaming revolution in home entertainment in shows like Grace And Frankie , Jane The Virgin , Glow and more. Thus her career has encompassed the many historical changes from practically five decades, from somebody in the thick of experience as a creator of those changes. She is also an accomplished director, producer as well as actor and, in what was news to me, the world of skin care and cosmetics, Mayron’s Goods and Supply: https://mayronsgoods.com I truly loved speaking with her on this episode as it was a chance to visit some of my favorite touchstones of film and t.v. in our time and from the point of view of someone who was one of its chief creators.” M E L A N I E M A Y R O N Melanie Mayron was nominated three times and won an Emmy Award for her role on the groundbreaking ABC drama “thirtysomething.” She was nominated for a British Academy Award for her starring role in the film, Girl Friends and won the Best Actress Award at the Locarno Switzerland Film Festival. Melanie has acted in feature films as well as television, among them Car Wash, Costa Gavras’ Academy Award winning Missing, and My Blue Heaven. She was last seen as Professor Donaldson in a recurring role in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. She performed on Broadway and Off. Melanie has forged an additional career as a director in movies and television and has directed episodes of the critically acclaimed HBO series, “Tell Me You Love Me “ as well as “In Treatment.” She was nominated for a Director’s Guild Award for Toothless, for ABC, starring Kirstie Alley. She has directed over a hundred episodes for television including this season’s Tommy on ABC starring Edie Falco, Lincoln Rhyme for NBC and for ABC The Baker and the Beautis. Her extended bio and links is on our podcast Facebook page. Dave met Daniel from France! He was in town on vacation and they bumped into each other at the Coolidge Corner in Brookline. Dave tells that story, and then the guys have a few things to say about Charlottesville, Va., and then they get into the movies. Evan starts things off with THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD (7:53), a movie he describes as “Not as bad as I thought it would be.” The guys head down under to BREAKER MORANT at 20:29, and Dave spends waaaaay too much time talking with a terrible Oz accent. Kris covers Errol Morris’ THE B-SIDE: ELSA DORFMAN’S PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY starting at 30:27. Evan takes they guys on a stroll down Amnesia Lane to CROSSING DELANCEY at 38:15, which is a delightfully sweet romantic comedy from the late 1980s. Finally, Kris and Dave cover Werner Herzog’s AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD at 48:00, which screened on Monday, August 14 in 35mm. Everyone should have access to rep theaters like the Coolidge.
